I (Marty Grant) am a 6th Great Grand Nephew of Daniel Bryson.
Many thanks are owed to various researchers, but special thanks to: Ethel Updike (decd), Lawrence Wood (decd), Guy Davenport, Pat Spradley, Jim Wardley, Bill Lindsey, Sandra Fender, and many others (see the Bryson researcher page).
Daniel Bryson was born 1755/1756 in Mount Joy, Lancaster Co, PA. He is a son of William Bryson and Isabella Holmes, but there is no solid proof of that. However, I have no reason to doubt it being accurate.
Daniel's birth place is based on information proven about his siblings, and recorded in early family histories written about this family.
Samuel Bryson (brother to Daniel) stated in his Revolutionary War Pension Application (10 May 1833 Wilson Co, TN) that he was 79 years old (in his 79th year) so he was born ca 1754. He also said he enlisted in Rowan Co, NC where he had moved from Lancaster Co, PA in his 15th year. After the war he moved to Pendleton County, SC where he lived 6 or 7 years. Then he moved to Buncombe Co, NC for 8 years, then to Wilson Co, TN where he now resides. This data parallels exactly (except for moving to TN) what we know about Daniel Bryson, so it is reasonable to assume they were brothers.
In a Family record written before 1898 by Talitha Bryson Allen (granddaughter of James Holmes Bryson, brother of both Samuel and Daniel) she stated that James, Daniel and Andrew Bryson were brothers. She mentioned that the family came from the province of Ulster in Ireland to PA, and later settled in Anderson District, SC. She stated all three brothers served in the American Army during the Revolution.
Thomas Clingman Bryson wrote in another Family Record (written before 1940) that the brothers were James, William, Daniel, Andrew and John, and that they were sons of William Bryson and a Miss Holmes. They came from Ireland to Lancaster Co, PA then to SC and NC.
Another Family Record written by Frank L. Bryson (1890-?) mentioned all six brothers: John, Sam, Daniel, Andrew, James Holmes and William.
All of the above information was based on family tradition and interviews with family members. It seems to establish fairly well that William Bryson and Isabella Holmes were the parents of James Holmes Bryson, John Bryson, William M. Bryson, Andrew Bryson, Samuel Bryson, and Daniel H. Bryson. The data also seems to agree that the Brysons came from Ireland to Lancaster Co, PA then to Rowan Co, NC, later to SC and western NC.
So, family tradition shows us that Daniel H. Bryson is a son of William Bryson and Isabella Holmes. Is there any other evidence of this? There is no direct evidence, as far as I know, but there is lots of circumstantial evidence. Here is what we know about Daniel H. Bryson.
He was born ca 1755/1756 (date based on his reported age on the 1840 pensioners list of 86 years). I have seen June 1756 listed as his birth date, but I don't know the source of that.
He was born in Lancaster Co, PA most likely. He came to Rowan Co, NC with his family in the 1760's, where his father William Bryson purchased land on Back Creek (now in Iredell Co, NC near town of Mooresville).
Daniel H. Bryson and all his brothers were reputed to have served during the Revolutionary War, and were said to be at the Battle of Kings Mountain. Daniel did leave lots of documentation about his service. He made several applications for pension, and apparently received one for awhile. After his death, his widow also made application in 1853 based on his service. William Irvin was deposed in Macon Co, NC in 1834 and stated that he was with Daniel Bryson at the Battle of Ramsours Mill. Daniel was listed on the 1840 census on the Pensioners list (in Macon Co, NC).
Daniel Bryson left the Back Creek area then Rowan Co, NC (now Iredell) and then moved down to what is now Anderson County, SC, then Pendleton District. He was listed on the 1790 census there as "Daniel Brison" next to his brother Andrew Bryson who was next to their father William Bryson.

Daniel Bryson apparently lived on Wilsons Creek in modern Anderson County, SC. Wilsons Creek rises just south of the town of Anderson, SC (modern Anderson County) and flows south into Abbeville County. At that time Anderson County was part of Pendleton District. Pendleton was divided in 1826 into Pickens and Anderson.
On 31 Jul 1790 Daniel Bryson witnessed a deed from John Caldwell Jr to John Bryson (Daniel's brother) for land on Wilsons Creek. (Pendleton District, SC Deed Book CD page 490).
On the same data, Daniel witnessed another deed to his brother John Bryson, this one from John McNeel of Abbeville Dist, SC. (Pendleton District, SC Deed Book CD page 490).
On 12 Dec 1794 Daniel Bryson sold land on Wilsons Creek to Thomas Jones of Abbeville Dist, SC. I haven't yet found where Daniel obtained this land. (Pendleton District, SC Deed Book CD page 7).
On 5 Jan 1796 Daniel Bryson and his wife Jenny Bryson (Jenny = Jane) sold 200 acres to James Bole. (Pendleton District, SC Deed Book CD page 313).
On 3 Nov 1796 Daniel Bryson witnessed a deed of sale from his brother Samuel Bryson to Samuel Barr for a negro man named Jack, 30 years old. (Pendleton District, SC Deed Book CD page 303).
Daniel Bryson was listed on the 1800 census in Pendleton Dist, SC. His brother John Bryson was a page or two away in the same county.

On 4 Feb 1804 Daniel Bryson sold a negro boy named Tom, 16 years old, to his brother John Bryson Sr. The deed was witnessed by "Jean Bryson" who was probably Daniel's wife Jane. (Pendleton District, SC Deed Book G page 30).
On 22 Nov 1804 Daniel Bryson, William Bryson (his son) and Daniel Bryson Jr (his son) witnessed a deed between George Clark and John Bryson (Daniel's brother) for 100 acres on Wilsons Creek. (Pendleton District, SC Deed Book G page 178).
On 30 Aug 1805 Daniel Bryson freed his slave Sally. A committee was formed that assured her fitness to be free. (Pendleton District, SC Deed Book G page 192).
Around 2 Sep 1806 (date instrument was recorded), Aquilla Nerron sold Daniel Bryson two slaves, Ame, aged about 18 or 19 and her child Fanny aged about 2. (Pendleton District, SC Deed Book G page 384).
Daniel Bryson's wife Jane died sometime between 1804 and 1807 in Pendleton Dist, SC (now Anderson County). Daniel married Martha Morrow on 5 May 1807 (date proven by her 1853 Pension Application). Martha was born ca 1782 in SC.
Daniel Bryson was listed on the 1810 census in Pendleton Dist, SC. His brother John was two pages away.

There are probably other records available for Daniel in SC, but I haven't had the chance to find them all yet.
Daniel was listed on the 1820 census in Pendleton Dist, SC. His brother John was quite a few pages away.

Daniel Bryson moved from SC prior to 1830 for he was listed on the 1830 census in Macon County, NC. In 1830 he was listed near John Turner Bryson (grandson of Daniel's brother James Holmes Bryson) and Margaret White Bryson, widow of Andrew Bryson (son of Daniel's brother James Holmes Bryson).

Daniel didn't leave many records in Macon County. He witnessed a deed on 30 Sep 1833 between George Ledford and Robert S. Bryson (his son) for a cow and calf. (Macon Co, NC Deed Book A page 149).
Daniel was listed on the 1840 census in Macon County, NC. This census also listed Daniel as a Revolutionary War Pensioner, and listed him as age 84 (born ca 1755/56). No other Brysons were listed on the same page with Daniel in 1840.

The last record I found for Daniel was dated 3 Apr 1841 when he witnessed a deed from Andrew M. Bryson Jr (his son) to John Lamb. (Macon Co, NC Deed Book D page 1815).
Daniel H. Bryson died 26 Mar 1844 in Macon County, and is buried at the Sugar Fork cemetery. Between 1840 and 1850 his widow Martha and some of their children moved to Gordon Co, GA where she was listed on the 1850 census.
On 12 Dec 1853 Martha Morrow Bryson applied for a widows pension (from Paulding Co, GA) based on Daniel's Revolutionary War service.
Martha died 26 Sep 1867 in Paulding Co, GA.
Lawrence Wood, who wrote "The Bryson Family of Western NC 1664-1980" in 1981, was a descendant of Daniel H. Bryson. He and I discussed the Brysons at length on the phone, in person and in correspondence for several years before he died in 1997. He had carefully assembled the list of children of Daniel Bryson based on interviews with his relatives, particularly his various Aunts and Uncles. This data (from family tradition and personal knowledge) has been the only means of identifying Daniel's children. We haven't found much of anything to prove any of these with primary source documentation, but based on Lawrence's data, I feel very good about this list of children. However, for the sake of completeness, and analysis, I'll list the children based on census analysis, then try to match up Lawrence's list with the apparent children per the census. This is not an exact science, but it helps to see the big picture.
Unknown Son (1784/90) probably William Bryson
Unknown Son (1790/94) probably Daniel H. Bryson (c1792)
Unknown Daughter (1794/1800) probably Isabella Bryson
Unknown Daughter (1804/10) possibly Elizabeth Bryson (c1810)
Unknown Son (1804/10) probably Robert S. Bryson (c1810)
Unknown Son (1810/20) probably Andrew Madison Bryson (1812)
Unknown Son (1810/20) probably Samuel M. Bryson (c1813)
Unknown Daughter (1810/20) probably Sarah Bryson (c1811)
Unknown Son (1784/90). Daniel Bryson had an apparent son this age. He was home in 1790 (age "under 16", born ca 1774/90), and still home in 1800, aged 10-15 (born ca 1784/90), and still home in 1810, aged 16-25 (born ca 1784/94). He was gone by 1820, so probably married or dead by then.
This could be William Bryson who witnessed a deed in Pendleton Dist, SC dated 22 Nov 1804 of his Uncle John Bryson, and the other witnesses were Daniel Bryson (William's father) and Daniel Bryson Jr (his brother). I have no additional data on this William Bryson. A man born ca 1784/90 would be old enough to witness a deed in 1804, so it could easily be this same unknown son of Daniel Bryson.
Assuming William is Daniel's son (and I think he probably is), he seems to disappear from the record after 1804 (though someone his age was still with Daniel for the 1810 census). Where did he go? There were 34 William Brysons listed on the 1850 census in the United States. I checked many of them but found no likely matches. This William would have been roughly 60 to 66 years old, and born in either NC or SC.
Unknown Son (1790/94). Daniel Bryson had an apparent son this age. He was home in 1800 aged "under 10" (born ca 1790/1800), and still home in 1810, aged 16-25 (born ca 1784/94). He was gone by 1820, or else listed in the 16-25 age group (born ca 1794/1804) which is a close enough match. He was gone by 1830 so probably married or dead by then.
This is almost certainly Daniel H. Bryson (c1792). Daniel Jr witnessed an 1804 deed (the same one William witnessed, and their father Daniel Sr also). Daniel was born in SC, and he does fit this age group for Daniel Sr's unknown son.
Daniel Jr married in SC and later moved to Habersham Co, GA. See their own page for additional information.
Unknown Daughter (1794/1800). Daniel Bryson had an apparent daughter this age. She was home in 1800 aged "under 10" (born ca 1790/1800), and still home in 1810, aged 10-15 (born ca 1794/1800). She was still home in 1820 age 16-25 (born ca 1794/1804), but gone by 1830 so probably married or dead by then.
I don't know who this was, but Lawrence Wood listed a daughter Isabelle Bryson in this family, and from Daniel's first marriage, so this could be her. I don't know where he found this name, for I've not found any references for it, nor do I know who she might have married.
I don't know who this might have been.
Unknown Daughter (1800/04). Daniel Bryson had an apparent daughter this age. She was home in 1810 aged "under 10" (born ca 1800/10), and still home in 1820, aged 16-25 (born ca 1794/1804), but gone by 1830 so probably married or dead by then.
I don't know who this might have been.
Unknown Daughter (1804/10). Daniel Bryson had an apparent daughter this age. She was home in 1810 aged "under 10" (born ca 1800/10), and still home in 1820, aged 10-15 (born ca 1804/10), but gone by 1830 so probably married or dead by then.
This is probably Elizabeth Bryson (c1810). She was Lawrence Wood's ancestor. He never had any direct evidence that Elizabeth was a child of Daniel, but his family had knowledge of the fact that she (Elizabeth) was a sister to Andrew M. Bryson, who we also believe is Daniel's son (but also not proven).
Elizabeth Bryson was born ca 1809/10 (per 1850 and 1860 census) in Buncombe Co, NC (per 1850 census). This birth place has always been a cause of concern, since her parents lived in Pendleton District, SC in 1810. It is easily explained by a temporary move into NC or possibly just a visit to relatives there when she was born. Another explanation is that Elizabeth is not Daniel's daughter. Just to examine that though, let me outline the other possibilities. Her birth year poses a problem, since on the 1820 census she could be listed in either of two different age groups, but nonetheless, let us look at the possibilities.
In 1810, Elizabeth would have been less than a year old, if she was born yet at all, so she should be enumerated in the "under 10" age group (born ca 1800/10). Narrowing the scope to western NC and upper west SC, there are several potentials for her. In Buncombe County (where she was reputed to be born, per the 1850 census), there was: James Bryson (c1780) with 3 daughters that age. None of these are positively identified. James was in Macon in 1830 when Elizabeth married. That leaves him as a possible suspect to be Elizabeth's father. William Bryson (1779) had one daughter that age, but he has a known daughter Elizabeth, older than this one, and this family never lived in Macon County. William M. Bryson (c1750) had 2 apparent daughter this age, but he already had an Elizabeth, also older than this one, and again, this family never went to Macon County. There were no others in Buncombe. In Haywood, there was James H. Bryson (1740/50) with 2 girls that age. These two are his grandchildren, Elizabeth* and Cynthia, out of wedlock daughters of Margaret Bryson (1784). Lawrence Wood once thought this Elizabeth was his Elizabeth, but later changed his mind. This Elizabeth (Margaret's daughter) married Michael Long, but I think there is room here for further study. In Pendleton Dist, SC, Daniel Bryson was the only one with daughters this age.
Based only on the 1810 census, I'd say Daniel and James Bryson (c1780) are the only suspects worth noting, excepting Margaret Bryson's daughter Elizabeth, who could be this same Elizabeth.
In 1820, Elizabeth Bryson would have been 10 years old or thereabouts. She could have been enumerated in the 10-15 age group (born ca 1804/10), though there is a slim possibly she would be in the "under 10" age group (born ca 1810/20). In Buncombe County, NC, Elizabeth Bryson (c1781) had a daughter 10-15 (her kids were born out of wedlock). In Haywood County, James Bryson (1780) had 3 girls 10-15. John Bryson (1769) had 2 girls that age, but his children are proven. In Pendleton Dist, SC only Daniel Bryson had a daughter this age.
So based only on the 1820 census, I'd say that Daniel (and James 1780) look like the best suspects to be this Elizabeth's father.
Since she fits in Daniel's household based on the 1810 and 1820 census, I'm going to leave her here pending evidence to the contrary. One additional problem (besides the birth place) is that Daniel's son Robert was also born ca 1809/10 (per 1850 and 1860 census). Since they were the exact same age in two consecutive census records, it seems accurate. They could not be twins though, since she was born in NC, he in SC. If I had to choose between them, I'd favor Robert as Daniel's child, and not Elizabeth, unless her age is off, then she could fit just fine.
On 10 Feb 1830, Mariet Strain (Merritt B. Strain) obtained a marriage bond in Macon County to marry Elizabeth Bryson. Ebenezer Scrogg was bondsman. Her father Daniel had moved to Macon by then, so this works. Merrit was born 8 Aug 1808 (source?) in Burke Co, NC (per 1850 census), son of John F. Strain and Hannah Rose (per Lawrence Wood).
They were listed on the 1830 census in Macon County, but not near any Brysons.

Merritt B. Strain died on 12 Aug 1860 (per Lawrence Wood). I'm not sure if he died in Missouri, or back in Macon County, NC. I would guess Missouri.
Elizabeth Bryson Strain died on 6 Aug 1866 (per Lawrence Wood) either in Missouri, or back in Macon County. I seem to remember Lawrence Wood telling me she died in Macon, but I could be mistaken.
Unknown Son (1802/04). Daniel Bryson had an apparent son this age. He was not home in 1810, but was home in 1820, aged 16-17 (born ca 1802/04), but gone by 1830 so probably married or dead by then. I have a feeling this was not a son, but a nephew, or other boarder, just living with Daniel in 1820.
Unknown Son (1804/10). Daniel Bryson had an apparent son this age. He was not home in 1810, but was home in 1820, aged 10-15 (born ca 1804/10), and still home in 1830, aged 20-29 (born ca 1800/10), but gone by 1840 so probably married or dead by then.
This is probably Robert S. Bryson (c1810). The connection is that Daniel witnessed a deed of Robert's in Macon County in 1833, and that Robert was born in SC. Note that his approximate birth date (based on his age in 1850) conflicts with Elizabeth Bryson (c1810) above. They couldn't both be born at the same time in two different states. Robert's age may be off slightly or hers might. However, both of them were consistent in 1850 (age 40) and in 1860 (age 50). If I had to choose based on the evidence at hand, I'd say that Robert's is correct, and Elizabeth's incorrect, or that she was not Daniel's child.
I feel rather confidant that Robert is probably Daniel's son, but I have no direct evidence of that fact. The are linked by the 1833 deed I mentioned. He married Sarah Clayton in Macon County, and later moved to Paulding Co, GA and then to Lawrence Co, AR. See his page for additional information.
Unknown Son (1810/20). Daniel Bryson had an apparent son this age. He was home in 1820, aged "under 10" (born ca 1810/20), but gone by 1830 so probably married or dead by then.
I don't have any suspects for who this might have been.
Unknown Son (1810/15). Daniel Bryson had an apparent son this age. He was home in 1820, aged "under 10" (born ca 1810/20), and still home in 1830, aged 15-19 (born ca 1810/15), and still home in 1840 (age 20-29, born ca 1810/20).
This is probably Andrew M. Bryson (1812). He is linked to Daniel by a deed dated 1841 where Andrew sold some land, and Daniel witnessed it. It does not proven they were father and son, but it fits, as Andrew is the right age, and was born in SC, he also named one of his own sons "Daniel". Andrew married Jane Caroline Peek in 1840 in Macon County. See their page for additional information.
Unknown Son (1810/20). Daniel Bryson had an apparent son this age. He was home in 1820, aged "under 10" (born ca 1810/20), and still home in 1830, aged 15-19 (born ca 1810/15), but gone by 1840 so probably married or dead by then.
This is undoubtedly Samuel M. Bryson (c1813). He was born in SC, he fits age-wise, and is linked to Daniel by living next door to Martha (Daniel's widow) in 1850. He also named his oldest children "Daniel" and "Martha". See their own page for additional information.
Unknown Daughter (1810/20). Daniel Bryson had an apparent daughter this age. She was home in 1820, aged "under 10" (born ca 1810/20), and still home in 1830, aged 20-29 (born ca 1800/10), but gone by 1840 so probably married or dead by then.
Lawrence Wood listed Sarah Bryson Wishon (c1811) (wife of John Owen Wishon) as a daughter of Daniel. I have not found any proof that Sarah was a Bryson, or daughter of Daniel. They were in Gordon Co, GA in 1850 2 doors from Martha Bryson.
Even though I lack any evidence that Sarah is a Bryson, or Daniel's daughter (Except for them being nearby in 1850), I will outline what I have for her. One supporting factor is her 1880 census record showing she was born in SC, and that her father was born in PA, and mother in SC. This fits perfectly.
They were in Henderson Co, NC in 1840 (assuming this is the same family), and in Gordon Co, GA in 1850 (2 houses from widow Martha Morrow Bryson). This listing in 1850 shows the wife as "Susan", not "Sarah". This must be an error as later records show Sarah.
I don't have them in 1860 or 1870 yet, but they were probably somewhere in Georgia.
She was in Bartow Co, GA in 1880, widowed.
