I (Marty Grant) am a 1st cousin 7 times removed to Andrew Madison Bryson.
Special thanks to Lawrence Wood (1937-1997) and Ethel Updike (1899-?) for their various write-ups on this family.
Andrew Madison Bryson was born 10 May 1812 (per tombstone, I think). He was born in South Carolina, probably in Pendleton Dist, SC (now Pickens Co, SC). He was probably named, in part, for his Uncle Andrew Bryson (1752), and probably in part for James Madison, who was President of the United States when Andrew was born.
Andrew Madison Bryson is a son of Daniel H. Bryson (1756) and Martha Morrow. I've seen no primary evidence proving this connection, but both Updike and Wood included Andrew in Daniel's family. Lawrence Wood told me that his older relatives referred to this Andrew as "Uncle", so that seems to tie him in. In his book, he mentions that his grandmother told stories about Uncle Andrew M. Bryson. There may be some solid proof of their relationship but I have not seen it yet. Daniel did witness an 1841 deed of Andrew in Macon Co, NC so this shows some close connection.
Andrew would have been about 8 years old by the 1820 census, and was apparently home with his parents in Pendleton District, SC aged "under 10" (born ca 1810/20).
In the 1820's, Andrew and his parents joined the rest of the Brysons in the Macon County, North Carolina area, just a short distance from their old home in South Carolina.
Andrew would have been about 18 years old by the time of the 1830 census. He seems to be listed with his parents for that census in the age 15-19 age group (born ca 1810/15), in Macon County.
Andrew was listed in Macon County Court minutes for August 1839 as being insolvent (not having paid his taxes) for 50 acres, and 1 poll. He was listed as "A. M. Bryson". His brother Samuel M. Bryson was also listed. (Macon Co, NC Court Minutes 1838-1855 page 34).
Andrew still seems to have been home with his parents for the 1840 census, aged 20-29 (born ca 1810/20), in Macon County.
On 11 Sep 1840, Andrew M. Bryson obtained a marriage bond in Macon County to marry Jane Peeke. Jane Caroline Peek was born 20 Feb 1820 in Buncombe Co, NC, daughter of David Peek and Mary Henderson (daughter of Charles Henderson).
On 3 Apr 1841, Andrew M. Bryson Jr deeded land "on the river" to John Lamb. Witnesses were Daniel Bryson (father) and Gray Crow. (Macon Co, NC Deed Book D page 1815 from "Records of Old Macon County, N.C. 1829-1850" compiled by Barbara Sears McRae, 1991. * Note: All deeds mentioned hereafter from books "A" through "E" are taken from this book.)
On 23 Nov 1846, Andrew M. Bryson sold Canada Henderson (Jane's Uncle), 100 acres on Sugartown Fork. Witnesses were Gray Crow and William Peek (Jane's brother, I think). (Macon Co, NC Deed Book E page 387)
This 1846 deed seems to represent the intention of the family to move, for right around that date, they moved to Pickens District, South Carolina (formerly Pendleton District), possibly to the same area where he had lived as a child.
Andrew and family were listed on the 1850 census in Pickens District, South Carolina. There were other Brysons in that county in the Eastern District, but Andrew's family was in the Western District. The ages of Andrew's children are not correct, so this entire entry should be suspect. Perhaps they were not home when the census taker came around, and a neighbor provided the data.
