I (Marty Grant) am a 2nd cousin 7 times removed to Daniel J. Bryson.
Special thanks to Lawrence Wood (1937-1997), and Ethel Updike (1899-?) for their books on the Bryson family, including information on this particular branch of the family.
Daniel J. Bryson was born 11 Feb 1816 (source?) in Haywood Co, NC. He was probably named in part for his Uncle Daniel G. Bryson (1787). I don't know what his "J" initial stood for.
Daniel J. Bryson is a son of John Bryson (1769) and Jane Poston. This is noted in several sources including the Frank Bryson (1890) family write-up of the Bryson family. Daniel was named as a sibling in the estate records of his brother Andrew Bryson (1809-1884). An 1852 deed also proves that Daniel was an heir of John Bryson.
Daniel was apparently home with his parents for the 1820 census, aged "under 10" (born ca 1810/20).
He seems to have been home with his parents in 1830 also, aged 10-14 (born ca 1815/20).
When Daniel J. Bryson turned 21 (in Feb 1837), he was one of three adult men named "Daniel Bryson" in the area. This means that there could be some confusion in the early Macon County records. The others were his Great Uncle Daniel H. Bryson (1756) and Uncle Daniel G. Bryson (1787). Since all had different middle initials, perhaps there will be no confusion.
On 25 Sep 1837, Daniel Bryson obtained a marriage bond to marry Lucinda Jones in Haywood County. The bond showed that she was a daughter of Edward Jones. William Allman was bondsman.
They were in neighboring Macon County for the 1840 census (where his parents, and most of his siblings were at that time). They were not near any Brysons, but were listed next to William Kinsland who was married to a cousin of Daniel's.

During the 1840's, they moved back to Haywood County.
Daniel and family were listed on the 1850 census in Haywood County. They were not listed near any of the other Brysons there.

In 1851, Jackson County was formed from Haywood County, including the section where this family resided.
They were listed on the 1860 census in Jackson County.

They were still in Jackson for the 1870 census, and listed in Cullowhee Township. They were near many other Brysons.

Daniel died on 16 May 1890, and Lucinda on 1 Jul 1891, both in Jackson County.
Daniel J. Bryson and Lucinda Jones had 7 children as proven by the various census records.
