I (Marty Grant) am a 1st cousin 7 times removed to Daniel G. Bryson.

Special thanks to Lawrence Wood (1937-1997), Ethel Updike (1899-?) Telitha Bryson Allen (1811-1898) and Thad C. Bryson (1869-1965) for their various write-ups on this family.

Daniel G. Bryson was born 23 May 1787 (per tombstone). He was most likely born in Lincoln Co, NC on Kennon Creek (present day Catawba County, NC).

Daniel G. Bryson is a son of James Holmes Bryson (1740/50) and Sarah Countryman. I've seen no primary evidence proving this connection, but several early family histories (written in the 1800's) list this Daniel as James' son, and I see no reason to doubt it. He does fit there circumstantially as well.

It seems very likely that Daniel was named for his Uncle Daniel H. Bryson (1756). I don't know the source for it, but his middle name is listed as "Granderson" by other researchers. I've not seen any primary record showing him even with a middle initial.

Daniel's parents left Lincoln County between 1787 and 1790 and moved to Pendleton District, South Carolina.

Daniel would have been about 3 years old by the 1790 census, and was apparently home with his parents in Pendleton District, SC aged "under 16" (born ca 1774/90).

In the late 1790's, Daniel's parents moved to Buncombe County, North Carolina and settled near the French Broad River.

Daniel would have been about 13 years old by the time of the 1800 census. He seems to be listed with his parents for that census in the age 10-15 age group (born ca 1784/90)

In 1806, residents of Western Buncombe County made a petition requesting the formation of a new county (Haywood County), and Daniel Bryson was one of the signers. This may not bee him, for he would only have been about 19 in 1806, so I'm not sure if that was legally old enough to sign a petition. If it wasn't him, then it must be his Uncle of the same name.

The new county was created in 1808, and many of the Buncombe County Brysons fell into the new county, or moved there shortly afterwards.

For the 1810 census, Daniel would have been about 23 years old. He seems to still have been home with his parents for that census (in Haywood County), listed in the 16-25 age group (born ca 1784/94).

Daniel Bryson married Artie Virginia Dillard on 3 Aug 1810 (source?) in Haywood Co, NC. I found no marriage record for them.  Her maiden name was given by Telitha Allen in her history (she was their daughter, so she should know).  Artie was born 9 Sep 1791 (per tombstone) in North Carolina, probably Buncombe County, daughter of Thomas Dillard and Dorcas ---.

The left present day Haywood County and moved over to Scotts Creek ca 1812 (that was still part of Haywood until 1851 when Jackson County was formed).

Daniel Bryson was listed on the 1820 census in Haywood County. Unfortunately, this census was alphabetical, so I can't tell who their neighbors were, nor where they might have been living exactly (though probably on Scotts Creek). Family legend says that his grandmother Elizabeth (---) Countryman lived with them, but no one her age was listed with them on this census.

In 1828, Macon County was formed from the western portion of Haywood County, and most of the Brysons fell into the new county or soon moved there. However, Daniel was still within the bounds of Haywood County.

They were listed on the 1830 census in Haywood County. They were not listed near any other Brysons. (The only other Bryson in Haywood that year was 1st cousin James N. Bryson (1795)).

In 1871, Swain County was formed from Jackson County, including the Deep Creek section where they Brysons were living at that time in or near Charleston (which was renamed in honor of Thaddeus Bryson to "Bryson City").

Artie Virginia Dillard Bryson died on 8 Aug 1875 (per tombstone), probably in Swain County (though possibly back in Jackson). She is buried at Old Field Cemetery near Beta in Jackson County.

Daniel was still with his son Thaddeus for the 1880 census in Swain County living in Charleston Township.

Children

Daniel G. Bryson and Artie V. Dillard had five children as proven by several sources, including the census records and several of the early family histories one written by a daughter of theirs, and another by a grandson.

Mary Telitha Bryson (1811)

Dorcas Bryson (1813)

Daniel G. Bryson (1821)

Artimesia Elvira Bryson (1821)

Thaddeus Dillard Bryson (1829)

Mary Telitha Bryson was born 14 Aug 1811 (source?) in Haywood Co, NC. She was apparently home with her parents for the 1820 census (age "under 10", born ca 1810/20). Telitha wrote the earliest known history of our Bryson family.

Telitha married Joseph B. Allen ca 1828 in Haywood (now Jackson) Co, NC. I didn't find a marriage record for them. He was born 6 Oct 1806 (source?) in North Carolina, son of William Judson Allen and Alyse Hyatt (source for parents unknown).

They were listed on the 1830 census in neighboring Macon County.

I was unable to find them on the 1840 census, but they were probably in Haywood County that year.

They were in Haywood for the 1850 census.

They were in neighboring Swain County for the 1880 census. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

Dorcas Bryson was born 16 Oct 1813 (source?) in Haywood Co, NC. She was apparently home with her parents for the 1820 census (age "under 10", born ca 1810/20), and still home in 1830 (age 15-19, born ca 1810/15).

Sometime before ca 1839, Dorcas Bryson married Allen Fisher, presumably in Haywood County (no record found). Allen was born 18 Dec 1812 (source?). I don't know who his parents were.

I did not find them on the 1840 census.

They were in Haywood for the 1850 census. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

They were listed on the 1860 census in Jackson County just two houses from cousin Jonathan M. Bryson.

Dorcas Bryson Fisher died on 12 Jul 1889 in Jackson County.

Daniel G. Bryson was born 27 Dec 1821 (per tombstone) in Haywood (now Jackson) Co, NC. His age seems to make him a twin to Artimesia Bryson, though I have a different birth day for her (off two days from his).  The trouble with this is that this birth date does not agree with his census entries. He was apparently home with his parents for the 1830 census (age "under 5", born ca 1825/30). He was apparently home in 1840, age 15-19 (born ca 1820/25).

In 1850, Daniel was living by himself in Haywood County, not far from his parents.

Artimesia Elvira Bryson was born 29 Dec 1821 (source?) in Haywood (now Jackson) Co, NC. Her age seems to make her a twin to Daniel G. Bryson, though I have a different birth day for her (off two days from his).  She was apparently home with her parents for the 1830 census (age 5-9, born ca 1820/25).

On 9 Jan 1840, George W. Clayton obtained a marriage bond in Haywood County to marry Arta Elvira Bryson, daughter of Daniel. J. S. Long was bondsman. George was born 15 Oct 1816 (source?) in Buncombe Co, NC (source?) son of John Clayton and Harriett Bryson. I've not seen a source for his parents names, and I don't know who this Harriett Bryson was.

I did not find them in 1840, though there was a George Clayton in nearby Henderson County, NC, though he was a much older man, but coincidentally, also married to a Bryson (Elizabeth Bryson, daughter of William Bryson 1779). I don't know if the two George's were closely related to one another, or if this is just a coincidence.

They were in Haywood County for the 1850 census. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

They were in Jackson County for the 1860 census near many Brysons.

Thaddeus Dillard Bryson was born 13 Feb 1829 (source?) in Haywood (now Jackson) Co, NC. He was apparently home with his parents for the 1830 census (age "under 5", born ca 1825/30), and still apparently home in 1840 age 10-14 (born ca 1825/30). He was still home in 1850 ("Thaddeus D." age 21).

He was listed on the 1860 census in Jackson County next to his parents.
