I (Marty Grant) am a 2nd cousin 6 times removed to Uel G. Bryson.

Special thanks to Marcelle Coker White and Jason Lee Edwards for sharing some interesting data with me on Uel's family.

Uel G. Bryson was born 10 Sep 1819 (date per Marcelle White) on the west side of Cullowhee Creek in Haywood County, NC (became Macon County in 1828, now Jackson County). He is a son of John Bryson and Jane Poston.

Uel G Bryson (sometimes listed as Uel "J") is a proven son of John Bryson. After John's death (1851), his estate included 14 heirs according to several deeds where heirs referred to their "1/14th part". In 1854 Uel J. Bryson sold his portion of the Estate of John Bryson Sr to William H. Bryson (his brother). (Jackson Co, NC Deed Book A1 page 209, per E. Updike pg 154).

Uel G. Bryson was also named (I think) in the the estate of his brother Andrew Bryson (1809-1884) of Jackson Co, NC. In Andrew's estate settlement dated 15 Apr 1884 which names Andrew's siblings as heirs, and refers to the "heirs at law of W.T.J. Bryson .. who are supposed to reside in GA". I believe this should say "Uel", as their are no known heirs with those initials. (Many say this was Thomas J. Bryson who married Susan Berrong, but they are not part of this family). (Jackson Co, NC Will Book A page 65).

Frank L. Bryson (1890-) wrote a brief Bryson family history, and listed "Ewell" as a son of John Bryson and his 2nd wife. See a transcript of Frank's Bryson family history.

Ethel Updike included Uel Bryson as a son of John and Jane in her book: Armstrong, Branyon, Bryson and Allied Families of the South (1967) on page 135 (See my commentary on that book). She also included a list of Uel's children on page 154, but no details on them such as who they married.

Lawrence Wood also included Uel as a child of John and Jane in his book: Bryson Family of Western North Carolina 1664 to 1980 (1981) on page 3 (See my commentary on that book). He had no additional data on Uel except that he married Priscilla Kirby.

When Uel was born (1819), his family lived on the west side of Cullowhee Creek in what was then part of Haywood County. In 1828 this area became Macon County. (The east side of the creek remained in Haywood, I think).

Uel G. Bryson obtained a marriage bond in Macon Co, NC on 13 Oct 1838 to marry Priscilla Kirby. I didn't find them in Macon County, NC on the 1840 census, nor in Union Co, GA. I'm not sure where they were. They may have been residing with Priscilla's parents, or with other relatives, or just missed by the census taker (or by me). If Priscilla is a child of Bailey Kirby, as I show (per Marcelle White), then they were not with that family in 1840 (Bailey Kirby was in Macon Co, NC in 1840).

The 1850 shows Uel and family in Union County, GA. They apparently lived in the Brasstown area, which later became Towns County (in 1856). Uel was two households away from his brother John Bryson (and his wife Jane Rogers).

In 1856 the section of Union County where they lived (and part of Rabun county) was cut off to form Towns County. They were found in that county for the 1860 census. They were 9 households from Thomas Bryson (his 2nd cousin).

In 1870, they were still in Towns Co, GA. They were listed next door to on side to his brother John Bryson and on the other side to Tilman H. Bryson, his nephew, and brother-in-law (they married Kirby sisters).

Uel and family were still in Towns County, GA for the 1880 census. Their son Wellington was married and living in the same household, but with a different family number. Two grandchildren were with Uel and wife, but I don't know which child they belong to. They could be Wellington's, though they weren't listed with them.

Uel Bryson died sometime in 1880 (per his Estate Papers, shared by Jason Lee Edwards). Marcelle White states that his tombstone (Old Union Cemetery, Towns Co, GA) lists "1884" as his death date. That may have been placed years later, or perhaps it does say "1880", but the "0" is faded away partly. Unfortunately his Estate papers do not list his heirs.

Priscilla Kirby Bryson died ca May 1885 (per Jason Lee Edwards).

Children

Uel and Priscilla's ten children are proven by the 1850 through 1880 census records. The names are also included in Ethel Updike's book.

Their birth and death dates that I have listed are per Marcelle White, who also relates that they are buried at the Old Union Cemetery in Towns County, GA.

Clemanda Bryson was born ca 1840/41 near Cullowhee Creek in Macon Co, NC (now Jackson County). She was home with her parents for the 1850 census, but gone before 1860.

She was home with her parents for the 1860 census (listed as "California"), and with them in 1870 (listed as "Almedia") but gone by 1880. She married Zachary Taylor Plott on 18 Jul 1871 in Towns Co, GA (per Marcelle White). Their birth and death dates that I show, are thanks to Marcelle White.
