I (Marty Grant) am a 2nd cousin 6 times removed to Samuel Bryson.

Special thanks to Lawrence Wood (1937-1997), Ethel Updike (1899-?) and Albert Swain Bryson (1851-1900) for their various write-ups on this family.

Samuel Bryson was born 16 Sep 1819 (source?) in Haywood Co, NC (presumably). He was probably named for his Uncle Samuel D. Bryson (1795).

Samuel Bryson  is a son of Andrew Bryson (c1785) and Margaret White. This is proven by a deed dated 1840 and another one date 1848 both stating that Samuel was an heir of Andrew Bryson and Margaret. Albert Swain Bryson (son of James H. Bryson, Samuel's brother) wrote a short history of the family and he included Samuel in the list of Andrew Bryson and Margaret White's children.

Samuel was apparently home with his parents for the 1820 census, aged "under 10" (born ca 1810/20).

In 1830, Samuel was apparently home with his widowed mother, aged 10-14 (born ca 1815/20).

On 27 Feb 1839, Samuel Bryson obtained a marriage bond in Macon County to marry Sarah Moore. Sarah is said to be a daughter of Abner S. Moore (1801) and Annie Cook.

Samuel was listed on the 1840 census in Macon County, in fact, three Samuels were listed. Samuel "Sr" was his uncle Samuel D. Bryson (1795), and Samuel "Jr" was Samuel M. Bryson (1813). The third, listed simply as "Samuel Bryson" appears to be the subject of this document. Samuel (1819) was just a few houses from Samuel (1813). Samuel (1819) was listed next to Tilenius Moore (1807), relationship unknown.

On 16 Sep 1840, Samuel Bryson made a mortgage deed to John Phillips, using 50 acres on South Side of Sugar Fork as the collateral. The land was described as bordering widow Margaret Bryson (his mother), and he also used "all my right to a child's part of the lands of Andrew Bryson, deceased, of which estate I am heir at law ...". Witnessed by E. Dowdle. (Macon Co, NC Deed Book C page 1464 from "Records of Old Macon County, N.C. 1829-1850" compiled by Barbara Sears McRae, 1991. * Note: All deeds mentioned hereafter from books "A" through "E" are taken from this book.)

On 18 Jan 1843, Samuel Bryson sold 75 acres to Isaac Moore (his brother-in-law), on Sugar Town Fork of Little Tennessee River. (Macon Co, NC Deed Book C page 1568)

Samuel moved his family to neighboring Cherokee County before ca 1848.

On 13 Mar 1848 The heirs of Andrew sold their shares to brother James: Samuel Bryson, Isaac Moore and wife Rachel, and Stephen Bryson, all of Cherokee County, sold to James H. Bryson, of Cherokee County, for $1000, their interest in 147 acres purchased by Andrew Bryson, deceased, on Sugartown Fork of Tennessee River, which descended to them as heirs (the list of heirs also included James H. Bryson). Witnesses were S. W. Davidson and John J. Rose. (Macon Co, NC Deed Book E page 324)

Samuel and family were listed on the 1850 census in Cherokee County.

They were not listed on the 1860 census in Cherokee or elsewhere in North Carolina. I don't recall who shared it with me, but some researcher told me that this family lived in Rusk County, Texas later on. I checked the 1860 census index and found them in Grayson County, Texas, the only Bryson family there that year. Grayson County was a popular migration place for western NC families.

I have not found them in 1870 yet.

I did not find them in 1880, at least not in Texas.

Children

Samuel Bryson and Sarah Moore had 6 children as proven by the 1850 and 1860 census records. I have no additional data on them.
