I (Marty Grant) am a 1st cousin 7 times removed to Samuel D. Bryson.
Special thanks to Lawrence Wood (1937-1997), Ethel Updike (1899-?) and Thomas Clingman Bryson (1851-1940) for their various write-ups on this family. Thomas Clingman Bryson's write-up was a very good synopsis of the Samuel D. Bryson family.
Samuel D. Bryson was born ca 1794/95 (per 1850 census Mortality Schedule) in South Carolina (per 1850 census), presumably in Pendleton District, South Carolina. He was probably named for his Uncle Samuel Bryson (1754). Both Mr. Wood and Ms. Updike list him as "Samuel Decatur Bryson", though I have yet to find a public document that showed him with a middle initial (though I certainly could have missed something). Thomas Clingman Bryson (Samuel's grandson) did not mention Samuel's middle name or initial in his family history. For the sake of consistency, I'm going to continue to list him as "Samuel D. Bryson", in spite of lack of evidence of his middle initial being correct.
Samuel D. Bryson is a son of James Holmes Bryson (1740/50) and Sarah Countryman. I've seen no primary evidence proving this connection, but several early family histories (written in the 1800's) list this Samuel as James' son, and I see no reason to doubt it. He does fit there circumstantially as well. Samuel's grandson Thomas Clingman Bryson listed Samuel as a son of James, and he was much closer to the source than we are, so it seems to be correct.
Very shortly after his birth, Samuel's parents left Pendleton District, South Carolina for Buncombe County, North Carolina and settled near the French Broad River for a time.
Samuel would have been about 5 years old by the time of the 1800 census. He seems to be listed with his parents for that census in the age "under 10" age group (born ca 1790/1800).
In 1808, Haywood County was formed from western Buncombe, and many of the Buncombe County Brysons fell into the new county, or moved there shortly afterwards, including Samuel's parents.
For the 1810 census, Samuel would have been about 15 years old. He seems to still have been home with his parents for that census (in Haywood County), listed in the 16-25 age group (born ca 1784/94).
Samuel would have been about 25 years old for the 1820 census, so should be enumerated in the 16-25 age group (born ca 1794/1804). His parents did have one apparent son that age with them in Haywood County.
On 28 Dec 1820, Samuel Bryson obtained a marriage bond in Haywood County to marry Rebecca Calor. Rebecca Caylor was born ca 1799/1800 (per 1850 census) in Buncombe Co, NC (per 1850 and 1860 census), probably a daughter of Jacob and Martha (---) Caylor, though I don't know if her parents are proven. Her parents names were not given on her marriage bond, so she may have already been 21 when she married (if under 21, parents must give their consent).
In 1828, Macon County was formed from the western portion of Haywood County. I don't know if Samuel already lived in that section, or if he moved there right afterwards. I think he was already there (in present day Macon County) as early as ca 1821.
On 9 Jan 1829, Samuel Bryson received a State Land Grant of 153 acres. (Macon Co, NC Deed Book A page 79 from "Records of Old Macon County, N.C. 1829-1850" compiled by Barbara Sears McRae, 1991. * Note: All deeds mentioned hereafter from books "A" through "E" are taken from this book.)
Samuel Bryson and William Bryson (don't know which one, probably his brother) were listed in Macon County Court in March 1829 on a road jury to lay off a road from Franklin to Tuckaseegee. (Macon Co, NC Superior Court Minutes 1829-1832 page 16).
Samuel Bryson was listed on the 1830 census in Macon County. He was two houses from his parents, and near several Caylors including George F. Caylor and Robert Caylor, both probably brothers-in-law of his. Father-in-law (probable) Jacob Caylor was on the same page.

Samuel D. Bryson died in January 1850 as reported on the 1850 census Mortality Schedule. He was listed as Samuel Bryson" age 55, born SC, cause of death: Dropsy. Since he had a deed dated 2 Jan 1850, he must have died after the 2nd.
His widow Rebecca was listed on the 1850 census in Macon County with several children still at home. No other Brysons were listed nearby.

According to Ethel Updike, Rebecca Caylor Bryson died in 1868, for an Inventory of her estate was made that year. She also stated that Samuel and Rebecca are both buried at Cowee Baptist Church Cemetery.
Samuel D. Bryson and Rebecca Caylor had seven children as listed by grandson Thomas Clingman Bryson. Four of those are confirmed by the 1850 census. Ms. Updike mentioned that there is an administration record dated 1856 that names the heirs. I have not seen it yet.
Margaret Martha Bryson (c1838)
Martha C. Bryson was born 20 Sep 1821 (source?) in Haywood (now Macon) Co, NC or possibly in present Haywood. Her 1850 census lists her birth place as Macon, yet 1860 lists Haywood for her birth place. She was probably named for her grandmother Martha Caylor. I don't know what Martha's "C" initial stands for, but Caylor certainly sounds reasonable (but that is just a guess). I have not seen any direct evidence that Martha was Samuel's daughter, but Thomas Clingman Bryson included her in this family, and since she was his Aunt, he would certainly know for sure.
Martha was apparently home with her parents for the 1830 census (age 5-9, born ca 1820/25). She was still apparently home in 1840 (age 15-19, born ca 1820/25).
On 1 Nov 1842, John Ramsey obtained a marriage bond in Macon County to marry Martha Bryson. John Ramsey was born 4 Jun 1814 (source?) in Burke Co, NC (per 1850 and 1860 census).
They were listed on the 1850 census in Macon County just three houses from her brother James Bryson. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
In 1860, they were still in Macon County. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
I don't have them in 1870 yet.
John Ramsey died on 6 Feb 1873 (source?) in Macon County.
Martha and children were listed in Franklin Township for the 1880 census. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
James Bryson was born 15 Sep 1823 in Haywood (now Macon) Co, NC.
He married Elizabeth Emaline Shepherd in 1843. See their own page for additional information.
Sarah Bryson was born ca 1827 (source?) in Haywood (now Macon) Co, NC. She was probably named for her grandmother Sarah Countryman Bryson. I have not seen any direct evidence that Sarah was Samuel's daughter, but Thomas Clingman Bryson included her in this family, and since she was his Aunt, he would certainly know for sure. Also, Sarah's only child was living with Sarah's mother in 1860.
Sarah was apparently home with her parents for the 1830 census (age "under 5", born ca 1825/30). She was still apparently home in 1840 (age 10-14, born ca 1825/30).
On 12 Jan 1847, Calvin Shepherd obtained a marriage bond in Macon County to marry Sarah Bryson. Calvin G. Shepherd was born ca 1823/24 in Haywood (now Macon) Co, NC. He is a son of Thomas Shepherd and Narcissa Welch.
Sarah Bryson Shepherd died sometime between giving birth to a child (ca 1847) and 9 Aug 1849 when Calvin remarried.
Sarah's only child James Thomas Shepherd (c1847) was with his father in 1850, and with his grandmother (Sarah Caylor Bryson) in 1860.
Samuel Byers Bryson was born 1829 (per Cowee Baptist Church records) in Macon Co, NC. He was apparently named (in part) for his father. I'm not sure where the "Byers" comes from, but several Brysons used that as a middle name.
Samuel was apparently home with his parents for the 1830 census (age "under 5", born ca 1825/30). He was still apparently home in 1840 (age 10-14, born ca 1825/30). In 1850 he was with his widowed mother ("Sam B." age 21, born Macon). He was still with his mother in 1860 ("Samuel B." age 28, born Macon).
On 11 Feb 1861, Samuel Bryson obtained a marriage bond in Macon County to marry Mary Morrison. Mary A. Morrison was born 10 May 1841 (source?) in Macon Co, NC, daughter of William Morrison and Susannah Queen.
They were listed on the 1870 census in Cowee Township next door to his brother James Bryson.

Samuel Byers Bryson died on 20 Oct 1895 in Macon Co, NC. Mary died 10 May 1911. I think they are both buried at Cowee Baptist Church Cemetery.
Rebecca Ellen Bryson was born ca 1831/32 (per 1850 census) in Macon Co, NC.
Rebecca was apparently home with her parents for the 1840 census (age 5-9, born ca 1830/35). She was home in 1850 with her widowed mother ("Rebecca E." age 18, born Macon).
On 31 Aug 1854, William M. Parrish obtained a marriage bond in Macon County to marry Rebecca E. Bryson. William M. Parrish was born ca 1830/31 (per 1850 census) in Orange Co, NC (per 1850 and 1860 census), son of William Parrish.
They were listed on the 1860 census in Macon County just a few houses from her mother. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
By ca 1866, they had moved to KY.
I don't have their 1870 census entry yet.
By ca 1871, they were in Arkansas, and by 1880 they were in Shackelford Co, TX.
Ruth Elizabeth Bryson was born 5 Mar 1835 (source?) in Macon Co, NC (per 1850 and 1860 census).
Ruth was apparently home with her parents for the 1840 census (age 5-9, born ca 1830/35). She was home in 1850 with her widowed mother ("Ruth E." age 15, born Macon).
On 29 Mar 1856, B. L. Duvall obtained a marriage bond in Macon County to marry R. E. Bryson. Benjamin Luther Duvall was born 12 Oct 1828 (source?) in Macon Co, NC (per 1860 census), son of Benjamin Duvall and Elizabeth Wood.
They were listed on the 1860 census in Macon. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
I don't have their 1870 census entry yet.
Ruth died in May 1875 (source?) in Macon Co, NC.
Benjamin was listed on the 1880 census in Cowee Township with his children. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
Margaret Martha Bryson was born 1837/38 (per 1850 census) in Macon Co, NC (per 1850 and 1860 census).
Margaret was apparently home with her parents for the 1840 census (age "under 5", born ca 1835/40). She was home in 1850 with her widowed mother ("Mary M." age 12, born Macon).
On 16 Aug 1856, Joseph Morrison obtained a marriage bond in Macon County to marry Margaret M. Bryson. Joseph Morrison ca 1839/40 in Macon Co, NC, son of William Morrison and Susannah Queen.
They were listed on the 1860 census in Macon. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
I don't have their 1870 census entry yet.
I didn't find them in 1880.
