I (Marty Grant) don't know how or if I'm related to the Catherine Campbell family. I am very interested in her though.
Catherine Campbell was born ca 1769/70 in South Carolina. The 1850 census shows her birth place as "Marion", which at that time was still part of Georgetown District. She apparently lived in the area that later became Hillsboro Township in modern Dillon County.
Catherine was either a widow or a single mother. I haven't figured out which yet. She was not listed on the 1800 census, but first appeared on the 1810 census in Marion Dist, SC. This census was alphabetized, so I can't determine where she lived exactly, but it was probably in Hillsboro Township somewhere (modern Dillon County). This census showed her with two children, and that is all she seemed to have. If she was a widow (which is probably correct), then her husband might have been Hugh Campbell or Malcolm Campbell, both of whom were listed on the 1800 census, but not on the 1810 census. I don't know if either of these are her husband or not, but they are suspects. Whoever her husband might have been, he died between ca 1805 and 1810.
1810 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census)

Catherine Campbell was not listed on the 1811 tax list, but she did appear on the 1814 tax list in Marion Dist, SC, and was charged with 50 cents tax.
She appeared on the 1820 census in Marion Dist, SC. This census was also alphabetized, so we can't determine where she lived exactly, though Hillsboro Township is most likely.
1820 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census)
1820 Marion District, SC pg 56 Katherine Campbell 000100-00101 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 16-25 (1794-1804) Joseph CAMPBELL (1804/05) son 1 Female(s) 45 & up (before 1775) Catherine ___ Campbell (1769/70) wd/o ? 1 Female(s) 16-25 (1794-1804) Agness CAMPBELL (1799/1800) daughter
Catherine Campbell was listed on the 1824 Marion tax list, and charged with 9 cents tax.
Catherine was not listed on the 1830 census, at least not as a head of household. Her son Joseph Campbell had a woman her age with him on that census, and I'm quite sure it is her.
I didn't find Catherine on the 1840 census. She was not listed as a head of household, nor was she in Joseph's household. Her daughter Agness (who married Daniel Carmichael) had a woman close to Catherine's age with her in 1840, and since Daniel's parents were already dead, I'm fairly sure it was Catherine, even though the age group was slightly off (1780/90).
Catherine was listed with her daughter Agness on the 1850 census. Son Joseph Campbell was next door. This was the Hillsboro Township area (now Dillon County).

I didn't find Catherine Campbell in the 1860 census, so she had probably died by then. Daniel and Agness Carmichael were listed in 1860, but Catherine was not with them. I didn't find Joseph Campbell and his family in 1860, so if they were still living, it is possible Catherine was with them at that time, but I suspect she had died before 1860.
Catherine Campbell seems to have only two children. If there were others, they were born and died between census years.
Agness Campbell was born ca 1799/1800 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Hillsboro Township (now Dillon County). My main link between her and Catherine was that Catherine was living with her in 1850. Agness also named one of her daughters "Catherine".
Agness Campbell married Major Daniel Carmichael before 1828. They were mentioned in A History of Marion County, South Carolina by W.W. Sellers, Esq. 1902 on page 443 in a writeup of the Carmichael family. He confirms that Agness was a Campbell.
"Daniel [Carmichael] married Agness Campbell, had one son. John C., and five daughters. John C. is unmarried."
Daniel Carmichael was listed on the 1830 census in Marion Dist, SC. This census was alphabetical, so we can't tell who his neighbors were, nor what area he lived in. There was another Daniel Carmichael listed on the same page, but slightly younger.
1830 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census)

Daniel Carmichael was listed on the 1840 census in Marion Dist, SC. Most of his neighbors were the same as he had in 1850, so he was presumably in the Hillsboro Township area (now Dillon County). An older woman was with the family, although her age isn't a perfect match, I think it must be Catherine ___ Campbell, as she wasn't found anywhere else.

Daniel Carmichael and family were listed on the 1850 census in Marion, apparently in the same area as before, Hillsboro Township (now Dillon County).

They were also listed on the 1860 census. Daniel died before 1870. John C. Carmichael was head of household in 1870, with his mother and unmarried sisters with him. Agness died before 1880. John and his sisters were listed on the 1880 census in Hillsboro Township.
Joseph Campbell was born ca 1804/1805 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Hillsboro Township (now Dillon County). I have no direct proof that he was a son of Catherine, but it seems highly likely. She had a boy her age with her in 1810 and 1820 census. She was missing in 1830, but he had a woman her age with him that year. He named one of his daughters "Catherine", and in 1850 he was living next door to her. See his own page for more information on him.
