I (Marty Grant) am a 4th Great Grand nephew of Jeremiah Campbell.

Jeremiah Campbell was born 28 Nov 1791 in the Maiden Down Bay area of Marion County, SC. At that time this was part of Georgetown District, until 1798 when Marion District was created. Jeremiah Campbell is a son of John Campbell and Nancy Ann Cribb, who are also my ancestors. Jeremiah's birth date was recorded in the Diary of Simeon Campbell (his nephew). Simeon Campbell also included Jeremiah in the list of children of John Campbell and Ann Cribb.

Here is an abstract of what Simeon Campbell listed for this family:

pg 25 "The Births of our ancestors. The Campbell Family. John Campbell was born Jan 6th 1752. He was an emigrant from Scotland. Ann, his wife, who was a Cribb was born Dec the 1st 1757. To them were born: Ann was born March the 14th 1775, Mary was born March the 15, 1777, John was born June the 9th 1779, James was born Nov the 7th 1780, Gadi was born May the 25th 1784, Jeremiah was born Nov the 28, 1791, Elizabeth was born Feb the 27 1794, Theophilus was born Oct the 20th 1796"

W.W. Sellers also mentioned him in his book A History of Marion County, South Carolina by W.W. Sellers, Esq. 1902, though he mistakenly listed the father as "James" instead of "John".

Pg 486 - 488 "The projenitor of this family was named James. He came from Virginia in the eighteenth century, married and had five sons, John, James, Jr, Jerre, Gadi and Theophilus; and one daughter, Nancy Ann, who became the wife of old John Huggins, of Huggins Bridge on Little Pee Dee, and who has already been noticed herein among the Huggins family; and Mary, who married Willis Huggins, cousin of old John, and Elizabeth, who never married."

As if the above weren't enough, some primary evidence exists that also proves Jeremiah was a son of John Campbell. This is in the form of a deed dated 7 Mar 1845 between the "Heirs of John Campbell Sr, deceased" where they jointly sold part of their inheritance to their brother Gadi Campbell. The deed was signed by Willis Huggins, John (x) Huggins, Jeremiah Campbell, Theophilus Campbell, and Elizabeth Campbell. (Marion County, SC Deed Book T page 152)

Jeremiah Campbell was apparently home with his father John Campbell on the 1800 census. John died between 1808 and 1810, and his widow Nancy (listed alternately as "Ann" on some records) was listed as head of household in 1810. Jeremiah was apparently with her for that census.

Jeremiah Campbell was listed as a head of household on the 1820 census, though he wasn't yet married. He apparently had some of his siblings with him at that time. Apparently his younger sister Elizabeth and younger brother Theophilus were with him, they fit quite well into this household. This census was alphabetized, so we can't be sure who his neighbors were, but he was most likely in the Maiden Down Swamp area (Reaves and Moody Township)

Jeremiah Campbell was named on 20 Nov 1821 in an Inventory of the Estate of John Henry, deceased, under notes and accounts, meaning he owed money to John Henry, several of his siblings and other relatives were also listed as owing money to John Henry. (Marion Dist, SC Inventory Book 1827-1836 pg 14 as published in the Pee Dee Queue)

On 30 Dec 1822 Jeremiah Campbell was a witness to a deed between his brother James Campbell to David Barnes for land on Maiden Down Bay and South East Branch.

Jeremiah Campbell was listed on the 1824 Tax list for Marion Dist, SC, and charged with 22 cents tax.

Jeremiah Campbell married Patience Scott sometime before 1830. Her maiden name is given in the Diary of Simeon Campbell and also in Sellers History of Marion County. I've not found any primary evidence for it, but it seems to be correct.

Jeremiah Campbell was listed on the 1830 census in Marion Dist, SC. This census was alphabetized, so we can't be sure who his neighbors were, but he was most likely in the Maiden Down Swamp area (Reaves and Moody Township).

Jeremiah Campbell was listed on the 1840 census in Marion Dist, SC. This census was not alphabetized, so we can determine where Jeremiah was, and who his neighbors were.  He was clearly in the Maiden Down Swamp area in either Reaves or Moody Township. Among his neighbors were several families known to live in that area, and near Millers Church.

On 7 Mar 1845, the Heirs of John Campbell Sr, (including Willis Huggins, John Huggins, Jeremiah Campbell, Theophilus Campbell and Elizabeth Campbell) sold 50 acres of land to Gadi Campbell. This was land they had inherited from John Campbell Sr. It was described as being on the North East side of the Little Pee Dee River in Horry Dist, SC known as "Land Bluff Ferry". (Marion Co, SC Deed Book T page 152).

Jeremiah Campbell and family were listed on the 1850 census in Marion Dist, SC. This seems to be either Reaves or Moody Township, or possibly even Hillsboro Township, based on the neighbors.

Jeremiah and family were listed on the 1860 census in Marion Dist, SC. It is hard to say precisley where they lived, but it was between Temperance Hill and Millers Church, in either Moody or Reaves Township (Moody is more likely).

Simeon Campbell reported in his diary that Jeremiah Campbell died on 22 Nov 1865 and that Patience died 27 Mar 1866. I don't know if they were buried at the Campbell Cemetery or not. I haven't seen any record of where they were buried.

Both Simeon Campbell and W.W. Sellers gave an accounting of this family, so we have a pretty good grouping for them. Here is what W.W. Sellers said in his book:

A History of Marion County, South Carolina by W.W. Sellers, Esq. 1902.

Pg 486 - 487: "Jerre Campbell married Miss Patience Scott, daughter of old Pharoah Scott, in the Tabernacle section, in Hillsboro; they had two sons and four daughters; the sons are Kenneth and Eli. One daughter married Willis Rogers, and had Simeon, Hampton and others. Eli Campbell married Miss Josephine Huggins, and had one child, a daughter who married Percy Harrelson, and has one or two children (small). One daughter of Jerre married Lawrence Sessions; she had three or four children, and died. Two of Jerre's daughters are unmarried. Kenneth Campbell married a Miss Harrelson, and has two daughters, unmarried."

Simeon Campbell's Diary records this about the family:

pg 28. "Jeremiah died Nov 22nd 1865 age 74. Patience his wife, who was a Scott died March 27th 1866.  Their children who have died. James, killed in battle June 1864. Jesse died April 2 1860. Little William died Nov 14 1858. Little John died May 22nd 1852. Mary. Martha B, died Dec 25 1900. Rebecca died May 24, 1904. Eli died May 13, 1907. His wife died July 22 1907".

Children

Jeremiah Campbell and Patience Scott's children are proven by the 1850 and 1860 census, as well as by W.W. Sellers book, and by the Diary of Simeon Campbell.

Mary Campbell was born ca 1831/32 in Marion Dist, SC, in either Reaves, Moody or Hillsboro Township. Can't be sure which section. She was home with her parents in 1850, but gone before 1860, so probably married or died by then. She was not mentioned by Sellers (at least not by name), but she was listed in Simeon Campbell's diary, but he gave no birth or death date, nor who she married.

Nancy Ann Campbell was born 25 Mar 1834 (per tombstone) in Marion Dist, SC, in either Reaves, Moody or Hillsboro Township. Can't be sure which section. She was home with her parents in 1850 and 1860. She married Willis Rogers on 22 Nov 1866 (per Simeon Campbell's diary page 58). I have birth and death dates for these two from their tombstones at Little Zion Cemetery.

Unknown Son. A boy born ca 1835/40 was with the family in the 1840 census, but not with them in 1850, so he had either died young, or moved out (though no older than 15 by 1850). The boy in 1840 could have been someone other than a son, such as a border, or a nephew or other relative. All of the sons mentioned by Sellers and Simeon Campbell have been accounted for.

James J. Campbell was born ca 1835/36 in Marion Dist, SC, in either Reaves, Moody or Hillsboro Township. Can't be sure which section. He was home with his parents in 1850 and 1860.

For the Civil War, he enlisted in Company "H" of Orr's Regiment of Rifles. He was killed in battle, June 1864 (per Sellers page 578).

Simeon Campbell also recorded this death (page 28) in his diary as "James, killed in battle June 1864".

Elizabeth Campbell was born April 1838 in Marion Dist, SC, in either Reaves, Moody or Hillsboro Township. Can't be sure which section. She was home with her parents in 1850 and 1860. In 1870 she was home with her brother Eli Campbell (see below), and in 1880 and 1900 she was with her brother Kenneth Campbell, still single. She wasn't mentioned by either Sellers (not by name anyway) or Simeon Campbell.

Rebecca Campbell was born 1 Sep 1839 in Marion Dist, SC, in either Reaves, Moody or Hillsboro Township. Can't be sure which section. She was home with her parents in 1850 and 1860. In 1870 she was home with her brother Eli Campbell (see below), and in 1880 and 1900 she was with her brother Kenneth Campbell, still single. She died 24 May 1904 in Marion Co, SC and is buried at Zion Cemetery (Moody Township). Her death was also reported by Simeon Campbell, who gave the same date in his diary (page 28). She never married. Her birth and death dates are on her tombstone, which I have seen. Her stone says "Rebecca Campbell Sep 1 1839 - May 24 1904".

John Campbell was born ca 1842/43 in Marion Dist, SC, in either Reaves, Moody or Hillsboro Township. Can't be sure which section. He was home with his parents in 1850. According to the Diary of Simeon Campbell (page 28), "Little John" died 22 May 1852.

Eli Campbell was born 20 Mar 1847 in Marion Dist, SC, in either Reaves, Moody or Hillsboro Township. Can't be sure which section. His birth date was reported in the Diary of Simeon Campbell (page 23). He was home with his parents in 1850 and 1860. He was listed as a head of household on the 1870 census in Marion Co, SC in Moody Township, with his unmarried siblings residing with him.

Simeon Campbell reported Eli Campbell's death as 13 May 1907, and Josephine's as 22 Jul 1907. They are both buried at the Miller Church Cemetery.

Kenneth M. Campbell was born May 1849 in Marion Dist, SC, in either Reaves, Moody or Hillsboro Township. Can't be sure which section. His birth date was from the 1900 census. His age wasn't consistent from census to census, so I can't be sure that one is accurate either. He was home with his parents in 1850 and 1860. In 1870 he was residing with his brother Eli Campbell.

Kenneth married Emma F. Harrelson before 1878. Sellers reported that Kenneth married a "Miss Harrelson", so I presume this is the one. She died about 1884, and Simeon Campbell reported the death of "Mrs. Tempie Campbell" on 26 Aug 1884. I'm not sure if that is one and the same person, but it seems to be.

Kenneth and family were listed on the 1880 census in Marion Co, SC in Moody Township, with his unmarried siblings residing with him.

After Emma's death in 1884, Kenneth remarried on 20 Jan 1886 to Mary Ann Moody (date per Simeon Campbell page 120).

Jesse Campbell was born ca 1850/60 in Marion Dist, SC, in either Reaves, Moody or Hillsboro Township. Can't be sure which section. He was not listed on the 1850 or 1860 census. In the Diary of Simeon Campbell (page 28), he reported Jesse's death as 2 Apr 1860. There is no telling how old he was at that time, but certainly born after June 1850, so less than 10.

William Campbell was born ca 1850/58 in Marion Dist, SC, in either Reaves, Moody or Hillsboro Township. Can't be sure which section. He was not listed on the 1850 census. In the Diary of Simeon Campbell (page 28), he reported the death of "Little William" as 14 Nov 1858. There is no telling how old he was at that time, but certainly born after June 1850, so less than 9.

Martha J.B. Campbell was born 21 Sep 1850 (per tombstone) in Marion Dist, SC, in either Reaves, Moody or Hillsboro Township. Can't be sure which section. She was home with her parents in 1860. In 1870 she was home with her brother Eli Campbell (see below), and in 1880 she was with her brother Kenneth Campbell, still single.

W.W. Sellers reported that a daughter of Jeremiah Campbell "married Lawrence Sessions; she had three or four children, and died".

Martha married Lawrence T. Sessions (his second wife) sometime between 1880 and 1887.

Martha died on 25 Dec 1900 in Marion County and is buried at Little Zion Cemetery.
