I (Marty Grant) am a 4th Great Grandson of James Campbell and Mary Barnes.
James Campbell was born 7 Nov 1780 in the Maiden Down Bay area of Marion County, SC. At that time this was part of Georgetown District, until 1798 when Marion District was created. James Campbell is a son of John Campbell and Nancy Ann Cribb. James' birth date was recorded in the Diary of Simeon Campbell (his nephew). Simeon Campbell also included James in the list of children of John Campbell and Ann Cribb.
Here is an abstract of what Simeon Campbell listed for this family:
pg 25 "The Births of our ancestors. The Campbell Family. John Campbell was born Jan 6th 1752. He was an emigrant from Scotland. Ann, his wife, who was a Cribb was born Dec the 1st 1757. To them were born: Ann was born March the 14th 1775, Mary was born March the 15, 1777, John was born June the 9th 1779, James was born Nov the 7th 1780, Gadi was born May the 25th 1784, Jeremiah was born Nov the 28, 1791, Elizabeth was born Feb the 27 1794, Theophilus was born Oct the 20th 1796"
W.W. Sellers also mentioned him in his book A History of Marion County, South Carolina by W.W. Sellers, Esq. 1902, though he mistakenly listed the father as "James" instead of "John".
Pg 486 - 488 "The projenitor of this family was named James. He came from Virginia in the eighteenth century, married and had five sons, John, James, Jr, Jerre, Gadi and Theophilus; and one daughter, Nancy Ann, who became the wife of old John Huggins, of Huggins Bridge on Little Pee Dee, and who has already been noticed herein among the Huggins family; and Mary, who married Willis Huggins, cousin of old John, and Elizabeth, who never married."
James Campbell was apparently home with his father John Campbell on the 1800 census. John died between 1808 and 1810, and his widow Nancy (listed alternately as "Ann" on some records) was listed as head of household in 1810.
Although James was of age (i.e. he reached 21 in 1801), he was not listed on the 1809 voter list for Marion Dist, SC.
By 1810 James Campbell was listed as a head of household on the census. I don't currently have that listing though.

There was another James Campbell in Marion at the same time, and he was about 20 years older than this James. In some cases I may have their records mixed up, but I think I have them properly sorted out.
James Campbell was listed on the 1811 Marion tax list. The other James was also listed. One was charged $5.40, the other $17. I'd suspect that James (1780) was the lesser of the two, since he probably had less property to be taxed. One of these James' was also charged twice for Tabitha M. Stewart. I don't know who she is, or which James this was.
James Campbell was also listed on the 1814 Marion tax list. The other James was also listed. One was charged $27.72 and the other just 74 cents. Although I can't be sure, I suspect the lesser charge applies to the James (1780) under study here.
James Campbell (1780) married Mary "Molsey" Barnes ca 1815 or so in Marion Dist, SC (her maiden name is per Sellers, see more on that below). The marriage date of "1815" is recorded in the Diary of Rev. Simeon Campbell (page 27). (see below for more on that as well).
On 1 May 1816, James Campbell purchased 57 acres of land on Maidendown Bay and South East branch from George Ford. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book F page 434).
James Campbell was listed as a head of household on the 1820 census. This census was alphabetized, so we can't be sure who his neighbors were, but he was most likely in the Maiden Down Swamp area (Reaves and Moody Township)

James Campbell was named on 20 Nov 1821 in an Inventory of the Estate of John Henry, deceased, under notes and accounts, meaning he owed money to John Henry, several of his siblings and other relatives were also listed as owing money to John Henry. (Marion Dist, SC Inventory Book 1827-1836 pg 14 as published in the Pee Dee Queue)
On 30 Dec 1822 James Campbell sold the 57 acres of land on Maidendown Bay and South East Swamp to David Barnes (possibly a brother-in-law?). The deed was witnessed by his brother Jeremiah Campbell and by Jess Harrelson (no known relationship). (Marion Co, SC Deed Book O page 263).
The above deed would seem to have left James with no property at all, but apparently he also inherited some from his father John Campbell.
James Campbell was listed on the 1824 Tax list for Marion Dist, SC, and charged with $2.55 tax.
James Campbell was listed on the 1830 census in Marion Dist, SC. This census was alphabetized, so we can't be sure who his neighbors were, but he was most likely in the Maiden Down Swamp area (Reaves and Moody Township).

On 24 Apr 1830 James Campbell sold 33 acres to his brother Gadi Campbell. The deed does not say how he acquired this land, but it gives it as being part of an original grant to John Cribb 13 May 1768, and part of a grant to Dempsey Campbell 2 Jul 1804. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book N page 284).
Both of the tracts described above were lands that John Campbell, father of James, had owned at his death, so the fact that James is selling them, with no deed showing he purchased them, is proof that he inherited them. The John Cribb land was sold by Cribb to John Campbell on 27 Jan 1808 (Marion Co, SC Deed Book D page 262). The Dempsey Campbell land was sold to John Campbell by Dempsey Campbell on 13 Dec 1806 (Marion Co, SC Deed Book D page 48).
James Campbell was listed on the 1840 census in Marion Dist, SC. This census was not alphabetized, so we can determine where James was, and who his neighbors were. He was clearly in the Maiden Down Swamp area in either Reaves or Moody Township. Among his neighbors were several families known to live in that area. On this census, James was listed as James "Sr" due to another James having come of age (James, son of Peter Campbell) was was listed as James "Jr" on the same census.

James Campbell died on 15 Mar 1842 in Marion Dist, SC (per the Diary of Simeon Campbell, page 27). He also stated that James was buried at the Campbell Cemetery.
His widow Mary Barnes Campbell was listed as head of household on the 1850 census, still apparently in the Maiden Down Bay area (Reaves Township).

Mary and family were listed on the 1860 census in Marion Dist, SC. Her son James was listed as head of household. They still seemed to be in Reaves Township.

Unfortunately, Mary and family lived in the section of Reaves Township that was missed on the 1870 census, so they are not listed (along with many of my relatives who are missing from this census).
Simeon Campbell reported in his diary that Mary Campbell died on 20 Nov 1872. He also stated that she was buried at the Campbell Cemetery.
Both Simeon Campbell and W.W. Sellers gave an accounting of this family, so we have a pretty good grouping for them. Here is what W.W. Sellers said in his book:
A History of Marion County, South Carolina by W.W. Sellers, Esq. 1902.
Page 486. "James Campbell, Jr, married Miss Molsey (Mary) Barnes, and had Ebby and James, and three daughters. One of the latter died unmarried. James (second) Jr, married Chloe Rogers, and had one son, Frank; his wife died; he married no more; is now dead. Frank married a Miss Jones, daughter of Ebby Jones, and is now a young citizen and promises well. Ebby Campbell married Charlotte Lane, and has six children - three sons, Spencer, George and another, name unknown; one daughter married Leonard Lewis, and has a family (small); another daughter married some one unknown; think the other daughter is single."
Simeon Campbell's Diary records this about the family:
Page 27. "James Campbell died March the 15th 1842 age 62 in his 62 year. He was an Exorter his wife Molcy died Nov the 20th 1872. Their children who have died: Jeremiah died in Mississippi. Celia Oct 1st 1867. James C. died June the 11th 1893. Arry died Dec 14th 1896. Ebenezer died Aug 24 1907, age 79. Annice Sept 15th 1901. He married in 1815".
James Campbell and Mary Barnes' children are proven by the 1850 and 1860 census, as well as by W.W. Sellers book, and by the Diary of Simeon Campbell.
Matilda Orilla Campbell (c1840)
Dempsey Campbell was born ca 1810/20, probably ca 1815/20. The only information we have on him is based on the Diary of Rev. Simeon Campbell, where he is naming the people buried at the Campbell cemetery. He refers to:
"unkle James Campbell and his first son Demcy Campbell and a grand son"
James Campbell did have an apparent son under 10 in the 1820 census (born ca 1810/20) who was gone from his household by 1830, so that is probably Dempsey, assuming he died young. So therefore, if this is an accurate interpretation, he died ca 1820-1830.
Ara Campbell was born 25 Feb 1819 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Reaves Township. Her birth date is proven by her tombstone at Zion Methodist Church Cemetery. Census records generally agree with this birth year. Ara Campbell is my ancestor. She married Carey Johnson ca 1845 in Marion Dist, SC. They lived in Moody Township. She died 11 Nov 1896, he 15 Jul 1900. Both are buried at Zion Cemetery. See his page for more information on this family.
James C. Campbell was born ca 1823/24 in in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Reaves Township. He was home with his mother in 1850 and in 1860.
For the Civil War, James C. Campbell enlisted as a Corporal in Gregg's Battery, Co. D, Manigault's Battalion Artillery. (Per Sellers, page 614).
Sellers reported that James C. Campbell married Chloe Rogers, and that would probably have been ca 1865/66.
Like most of his family, he was not listed on the 1870 census, being in the section of Reaves Township that was missed for some reason. However, he did appear on the 1880 census, but by this time his wife had died, so I have no additional information on her yet. It seems as though they only had one child, Frank Campbell.

James C. Campbell died 11 Jun 1893 (per Simeon Campbell page 27) in Marion Co, SC. He is buried at Miller Church Cemetery.
Jeremiah B. Campbell was born ca 1825/26 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Reaves Township. He was home with his mother on the 1850 census, but not found in 1860. Simeon Campbell reported that he died in Mississippi. Nancy Hanks, a descendant, gave me additional information on this family. Jeremiah married Martha Frances Platt in Marion Dist, SC, and then they apparently went to Smith Co, MS. I haven't followed up on this yet, to obtain additional data.
Ebenezer Campbell was born 29 Jul 1828 (per his tombstone) in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Reaves Township. He married Charlotte Lane ca 1851 in Marion Dist, SC. They are my ancestors. She is a daughter of Alexander Lane and Lucinda Blackman.
See their own page for additional information.
Annice Campbell was born 9 Oct 1832 (per tombstone) in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Reaves Township. She was home with her mother for the 1850 and 1860 census. Like the rest of the family, she wasn't found in 1870.
Sometime before 1871 she married a Mr. Perritt, who died before 1880. She was listed in the household of her sister Ara Campbell Johnson in 1880 in Marion Co, SC in Harlleesville Township. Simeon Campbell reported her death date as 15 Sep 1901 and that she is buried at the Miller Church cemetery. Her tombstone there shows her as "Annis Perritt".
Celia Campbell was born ca 1834/35 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Reaves Township. She was home with her mother for the 1850 and 1860 census. Simeon Campbell reported her death date as 1 Oct 1867.
Matilda Orilla Campbell was born ca 1839/40 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Reaves Township. She was home with her mother for the 1850 and 1860 census. Like the rest of the family, she wasn't found in 1870. I have no further record of her. I didn't see her mentioned in Simeon Campbell's Diary.
