I (Marty Grant) am a 4th Great Grand nephew of Gadi Campbell.
Gadi Campbell was born 25 May 1785 in the Maiden Down Bay area of Marion County, SC. At that time this was part of Georgetown District, until 1798 when Marion District was created. Gadi Campbell is a son of John Campbell and Nancy Ann Cribb, who are also my ancestors. Gadi's birth date was recorded in the Diary of Simeon Campbell (his nephew). Simeon Campbell also included Gadi in the list of children of John Campbell and Ann Cribb.
Here is an abstract of what Simeon Campbell listed for this family:
pg 25 "The Births of our ancestors. The Campbell Family. John Campbell was born Jan 6th 1752. He was an emigrant from Scotland. Ann, his wife, who was a Cribb was born Dec the 1st 1757. To them were born: Ann was born March the 14th 1775, Mary was born March the 15, 1777, John was born June the 9th 1779, James was born Nov the 7th 1780, Gadi was born May the 25th 1784, Jeremiah was born Nov the 28, 1791, Elizabeth was born Feb the 27 1794, Theophilus was born Oct the 20th 1796"
W.W. Sellers also mentioned him in his book A History of Marion County, South Carolina by W.W. Sellers, Esq. 1902, though he mistakenly listed the father as "James" instead of "John".
Pg 486 - 488 "The projenitor of this family was named James. He came from Virginia in the eighteenth century, married and had five sons, John, James, Jr, Jerre, Gadi and Theophilus; and one daughter, Nancy Ann, who became the wife of old John Huggins, of Huggins Bridge on Little Pee Dee, and who has already been noticed herein among the Huggins family; and Mary, who married Willis Huggins, cousin of old John, and Elizabeth, who never married."
Gadi Campbell was apparently home with his father John Campbell on the 1790 and 1800 census. John died between 1808 and 1810, and his widow Nancy (listed alternately as "Ann" on some records) was listed as head of household in 1810. Gadi was apparently with her for that census.
Gadi Campbell married Mary Norton before 1820 in Marion Dist, SC.
For some reason or another, Gadi Campbell and family moved to Georgetown District, SC before 1820, and was listed on the census there that year. He was listed near numerous members of the Cribb family (his cousins and possibly his Uncles), and there were two men named John Campbell listed on the following two pages. One of them might be his brother John.

Gadi may have still been in Georgetown as late as 1824, for he was not listed on the 1824 Marion tax list. However, he was back in Marion in time for the 1830 census. This census was alphabetized, so we can't be sure who his neighbors were, but he was most likely in the Maiden Down Swamp area (Reaves and Moody Township).

On 24 Apr 1830 Gadi Campbell purchased 33 acres from his brother James Campbell, this was land on Maiden Down Swamp, that James had inherited from their father. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book N page 284).
Gadi Campbell was listed on the 1840 census in Marion Dist, SC. This census was not alphabetized, so we can determine where Gadi was, and who his neighbors were. He was clearly in the Maiden Down Swamp area in either Reaves or Moody Township. His neighbors included his sister Elizabeth Campbell and his brother Theophilus Campbell and his brother-in-law Willis Huggins (married to his sister Mary Campbell).

On 7 Mar 1845, the Heirs of John Campbell Sr, (including Willis Huggins, John Huggins, Jeremiah Campbell, Theophilus Campbell and Elizabeth Campbell) sold 50 acres of land to Gadi Campbell. This was land they had inherited from John Campbell Sr. It was described as being on the North East side of the Little Pee Dee River in Horry Dist, SC known as "Land Bluff Ferry". (Marion Co, SC Deed Book T page 152).
Gadi Campbell and family were listed on the 1850 census in Marion Dist, SC. This seems to be Reaves Township, based on the neighbors, which includes his brother-in-law Willis Huggins, who is next door, and his sister Elizabeth Campbell, just two houses away.

Gadi and family were listed on the 1860 census in Marion Dist, SC. It is hard to say precisely where they lived, but it was still in Reaves Township, as they had the same neighbors as before, his sister Elizabeth Campbell was still just two houses away. His brother-in-law Willis Huggins had died in 1857, but his daughter Mary Huggins was still next door. A "C. Huggins" was with the family, apparently as a house keeper. I haven't figured out who she is yet.

Simeon Campbell reported in his diary that Gadi Campbell died on 13 Oct 1862. He also reports that Gadi and wife and several of their children are buried in the Campbell Cemetery.
Like so many other Reaves Township residents, this family was missing from the 1870 census.
Gadi's widow Mary Norton Campbell, was listed on the 1880 census in Marion County, in Reaves Township, residing with her son Theophilus Campbell (see his listing below for a transcript).
Simeon Campbell reported in his diary that Mary died on 6 Jul 1887. He also reports that she was buried in the Campbell Cemetery.
Both Simeon Campbell and W.W. Sellers gave an accounting of this family, so we have a pretty good grouping for them. Here is what W.W. Sellers said in his book (I've put surnames in CAPS):
A History of Marion County, South Carolina by W.W. Sellers, Esq. 1902.
Pg 487-488: "Gadi CAMPBELL married Mary NORTON, sister of John NORTON and aunt of Hon. James NORTON; they had four sons, Warren W., Charles Fletcher, Theophilus and Benjamin F., and three daughters, Martha, Emaline and Eliabeth (sic). Of the daughters, Martha married James DUDNEY, and had and raised several children, all grown, about whom little is known; Emaline CAMPBELL married the late Thomas A. PROCTOR, and had several children. Of the daughters of Thomas A. PROCTOR, the eldest Sallie married Thomas COTTINGHAM, and had one or two children; she died several years ago. Another daughter Anne PROCTOR, married Major BIRD, and had one child, and died. Relda PROCTOR married Milton NORTON, and has a family (coming). Mary married Mr WILLIAMS, and has a large family: they are in Hampton County; and Miss Fannie PROCTOR is unmarried. Elizabeth CAMPBELL married R.B. GAME, and they had and raised a considerable family. Of the daughters of R.B. GAME and wife, Hattie married a Mr. HUNTER; they are in Florence County. Mary GAME married Samuel ROGERS; they have quite a family; they live in Columbia. Robert GAME married Albert ROGERS; have a family (small). Georgia GAME married a Mr. CHREITZBERG; they had two children, a son and a daughter, Robert and Lula (small). CHREITZBERG dying, the widow married Daniel MARTIN, of Mullins; no children by her MARTIN marriage. Lila GAME is unmarried. Of the sons of Gadi CAMPBELL, Warren W. died a young single man, just as he was preparing to enter as a minister in the South Carolina Conference (Methodist). Charles Fletcher CAMPBELL, son of Gadi, never married; he joined the South Carolina Conference in1 859, and died in 1860, at the age of twenty-seven. Benjamin F. CAMPBELL, son of Gadi, never married; he died or was killed in the war. Theophilus CAMPBELL, son of Gadi, married Emma HUGGINS; he is dead; left his widow, two sons and four daughters. Of the daughters, Louisa married a Mr. PROCTOR; he died and left her with two children; she is in Washington-whether married again, the writer know not. Dora, the next daughter, married T.W. SELLERS, the nephew of the writer; she died, and left two children, daughters (small). Etta, the next daughter, is also in Washington, D.C.; said to be married, but to whom is not known. Maggie, the youngest, is unmarried, perhaps not grown. Of the two sons, Iverson and Theo, they are with their mother; neither one of them is grown."
Simeon Campbell's Diary records this about the family (some punctuation added by me):
pg 27. "Gadi Campbell died Oct 13th 1862 (Age) 78 years. Mary his wife who was a Norton died July 6th 1887 age 88 who was born April 19th 17,99. Their children Eliza died in 1840. Ann Jinkins died in 1842. John Warren died 185? (April 22n). Charles D.L. Fletcher, died May 1st 1860. He was a Preacher. Gadi Francis died a Soldier in the Late War at Georgetown Feb 5th 1862. Elizabeth died Suddenly Oct 29th 1874. Theo died July the 8th 1892. Thomas Proctor, son in law died July 24th 1896. Emeline his wife died March 7th, 1910."
Simeon Campbell also mentioned several members of this family in a section on those buried in the Campbell cemetery:
"unkle Gadi Campbell and wife Mary and three daughters, Eliza and Nancy and Elizabeth's 2 children, Gadi's four sons, John, Warran ..."
There were other references to this family throughout the diary.
Gadi Campbell and Mary Norton's children are proven by the 1850 and 1860 census, as well as by W.W. Sellers book, and by the Diary of Simeon Campbell.
Eliza Campbell was born ca 1820 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Reaves Township. She is known only via the Diary of Simeon Campbell who states that Eliza died in 1840. The early census records show an unknown daughter born ca 1820, so that is probably her (under 10 in 1820 = ca 1810/20; age 5-9 in 1830 = ca 1820/25; age 20-29 in 1840 = ca 1810/20). She is buried at the Campbell Cemetery, per Simeon Campbell.
Nancy Ann Jinkins Campbell was born 24 Nov 1823 (per Simeon Campbell page 23) in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Reaves Township. She died in 1842 per Simeon Campbell (page 27). Simeon Campbell listed her as "Ann Jankins" on page 23, and as "Ann Jinkins" on page 27, and in the record of those buried at the Campbell cemetery he refers to her as "Nancy" (which is interchangeable with "Ann"). I've assumed (like others have) that "Jinkins" was her middle name, and not the name of a husband, though she would have been 21 when she died, so she may have married a Mr. Jenkins before she died. If so, I don't know who he was.
Aramatha Campbell was born 29 Jun 1827 (per Simeon Campbell page 23) in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Reaves Township. She married James Dudney in June 1846 (per Simeon Campbell page 56). Simeon Campbell recorded the births, marriages and deaths of many members of this family throughout his diary. They were listed on the 1850 census in Marion Dist, SC not far from her father. They were listed near him also in 1860. In 1870 they were listed in Reaves Township. James died on 8 Sep 1878 (per Simeon Campbell page 37). Aramatha was listed on the 1880 and 1900 census in Marion County, in Reaves Township. She died 16 Mar 1906 (Simeon Campbell page 23).
Emaline Campbell was born 6 Oct 1829 (per Simeon Campbell page 23) in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Reaves Township. She married Thomas A. Proctor on 17 Feb 1846 (Simeon Campbell page 56) in Marion Dist, SC. I didn't find them listed on the 1850 census. In 1860 they were in Marion District, SC apparently in the Mars Bluff area (now Florence County). I didn't find them in 1870, so apparently they were in that section of Reaves that was missed. In 1880 they were in Reaves Township. Thomas died 24 Jul 1896 (Simeon Campbell page 27). Emaline was listed on the 1900 census in Reaves Township (southern division). She died 7 Mar 1910 (Simeon Campbell page 27). Simeon Campbell recorded the marriages and deaths of many members of this family throughout his diary.
Sarah Elizabeth Campbell was born 29 Jan 1832 (per Simeon Campbell page 23) in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Reaves Township. She was home with her parents for the 1850 census. She married Robert B. Game on 29 Jun 1854 (Simeon Campbell page 61). They were listed on the 1860 census in Marion Dist, SC, apparently in the Reaves Township area. Like so many others, they were missed on the 1870 census. Elizabeth died "suddenly" 29 Oct 1874 per Simeon Campbell (page 27). After her death R.B. Game married Anna Elizabeth Fladger on 13 Jun 1875 (per Simeon Campbell page 61). R.B. Game was listed on the 1880 and 1900 census in Reaves Township. He died 1 Jan 1903 (Simeon Campbell page 27). Elizabeth may be buried at the Campbell cemetery. Simeon Campbell recorded the marriages and deaths of many members of this family throughout his diary.
John Warren W. Campbell was born ca 1832/33 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Reaves Township. He was home with his parents for the 1850 census. He died 22 Apr 1853. His death was reported by Simeon Campbell (page 27) who listed April 22nd 185- (last part illegible). His death was also reported in the Marion Star newspaper: 22 Apr 1853 "in his 20th year, J.W.W. Campbell, son of Gadi and Mary Campbell, joined the M.E. Church". Simeon Campbell reported that he was buried at the Campbell Cemetery.
Charles D. L. Fletcher Campbell was born 11 Mar 1836 (source?) in Marion Dist, SC presumably in Reaves Township. He was home with his parents for the 1850. He died 1 May 1860 per Simeon Campbell (page 27). He is buried at the Campbell cemetery (per Simeon Campbell).
Theophilus Campbell was born 29 Nov 1838 (source?) in Marion Dist, SC presumably in Reaves Township. He was home with his parents for the 1850 and 1860 census.
For the Civil War, Theophilus enlisted in Gregg's Battery, Co. D, Manigault's Battalion Artillery as a Private. (Per Sellers page 616).
Theophilus married Henrietta Emaline Huggins on 6 Sep 1865 (per Simeon Campbell page 56). She was his first cousin. They were listed on the 1870 census in Marion Co, SC in Reaves Township. His mother-in-law (and Aunt) Mary Huggins was living with them. They were listed next door to Theophilus' 1st cousin Simeon Campbell (author of the oft-quoted diary). He was a son of Elizabeth Campbell.

Theophilus and family were still in Reaves Township for the 1880 census. Theophilus' mother Mary Norton Campbell was residing with them. Theophilus Campbell's 1st cousins Simeon Campbell was listed next door, just as in 1870. Interestingly, Henry Edwards was residing with Theophilus and family and listed as "Uncle". I have yet to figure out how Henry Edwards could be their Uncle, but perhaps I'll figure that out eventually.

Theophilus died 8 Jul 1892 (per Simeon Campbell page 27). He is buried at the Campbell cemetery. His wife Emaline died January 1922 (Simeon Campbell page 184). Since Simeon died in 1912, this entry must have been added by someone else. Simeon Campbell recorded the births, marriages and deaths of many members of this family throughout his diary.
Gadi Frances Campbell was born ca 1843/44 in Marion Dist, SC presumably in Reaves Township. He was home with his parents for the 1850 and 1860 census.
For the Civil War, "G.F. Campbell" enlisted in Company L, Tenth Regiment Infantry as a Private. He died at a hospital. (Per Sellers page 600). Simeon Campbell gave this info: "Gadi Francis died a soldier in the Late war at Georgetown Feb 5th 1862". He was apparently brought home to be buried at the Campbell cemetery, for Simeon Campbell said all four of Gadi's sons are buried there, and that would have to include Gadi Frances.
