I (Marty Grant) am a 3rd Great grandson of Ebenezer and Charlotte Campbell.

Ebenezer Campbell was born 29 Jul 1828 (per tombstone) in Marion District, SC, probably just north of Mullins.  Ebenezer was known to family members and friends as "Ebby" or "Eb".

Ebenezer is a son of James Campbell and Mary Barnes. This is proven by the 1850 census, and is also mentioned in :"A History of Marion County, South Carolina" by W.W. Sellers, Esq. 1902. Pg 486:

A History of Marion County, South Carolina by W.W. Sellers, Esq. 1902.

Page 486. "James Campbell, Jr, married Miss Molsey (Mary) Barnes, and had Ebby and James, and three daughters. One of the latter died unmarried. James (second) Jr, married Chloe Rogers, and had one son, Frank; his wife died; he married no more; is now dead. Frank married a Miss Jones, daughter of Ebby Jones, and is now a young citizen and promises well. Ebby Campbell married Charlotte Lane, and has six children - three sons, Spencer, George and another, name unknown; one daughter married Leonard Lewis, and has a family (small); another daughter married some one unknown; think the other daughter is single."

Ebenezer's first cousin, Simeon Campbell (son of Elizabeth Campbell) recorded family data in his diary:

Page 27. "James Campbell died March the 15th 1842 age 62 in his 62 year. He was an Exorter his wife Molcy died Nov the 20th 1872. Their children who have died: Jeremiah died in Mississippi. Ebenezer seemed to be home with his parents for the 1830 census in Marion District, age "under 5" (born ca 1825/30).

Ebenezer seemed to be home with his parents for the 1840 census in Marion District, age 10-14 (born ca 1825/30).

In 1850, Ebenezer was home with his widowed mother and some siblings in Marion District, SC.

Ebenezer Campbell married Charlotte Lane ca 1850/51 in Marion Dist, SC. She didn't live near the Campbell's, but some of her brothers lived near them, so that is probably how they met.

Charlotte Lane was born 14 Jun 1833 (per tombstone) in Marion Dist, SC, daughter of Alexander Lane and Lucinda Blackman (proven by 1850 census and W. W. Sellers).

Ebenezer and Charlotte and family were listed on the 1860 census in Marion Dist, SC, next door to his widowed mother. They had a young Daniel Ammons and M. E. Moody residing with them. Relationship to these two has not yet been established.

For the Civil War, Ebenezer Campbell enlisted as a Private in Gregg's Battery, Company D, Manigault's Battalion Artillery. He was discharged 30 Nov 1863. (Per Sellers, page 616).

Ebenezer and family were missed on the 1870 census. For some reason, an entire region of Reeves Township was missed, as many of my relatives in that area were not listed on the 1870 census. I can only conclude that the census taker either missed an entire community, or else when he made the Federal copy of his census records, he somehow left out a few pages.

They were listed on the 1880 census in Marion County, and in Reeves Township. For some inexplicable reason, Charlotte's name was left blank on this record.

The 1890 census is lost for most of the United States, including Marion Co, SC.

Charlotte Lane Campbell died in Marion County on 21 May 1899 (proven by tombstone, and also recorded in Simeon Campbell's diary, page 47 and 160). She is buried at the Zion Methodist Church Cemetery with a double stone for her and Ebenezer. Her side says "Charlotte Campbell Jun 14 1833 - May 21 1899". My mother and I visited their graves a few years ago.

Ebenezer and daughter Florence were listed on the 1900 census in Marion Co, SC in Reeves Township not far from numerous relatives. Interestingly, Ebenezer listed his mother's birth place as "NC" on this census (though in 1880 he gave "SC" and other records show his mother was born in SC).

Ebenezer Campbell died in Marion County on 24 Aug 1907 (date proven by tombstone, and also recorded in Simeon Campbell's diary, page 27 and page 160). He is buried next to his wife Charlotte at Zion Methodist Church Cemetery. He shares a stone with Charlotte, his side says "Ebenezer Campbell Jul 29 1828 - Aug 24 1907".

Children

Ebenezer and Charlotte had 8 children. These children are proven by the 1860 through 1900 census records, and many were also well known among family members, and their names were shared with me by several relatives who knew them, including my Great Aunt Dot Turner Campbell, and my Great Uncle Ira Campbell, and others.

Spencer Alva Campbell (1852)

A. Campbell (c1856)

Nancy Campbell (1864)

George W. Campbell (1867)

Mary Campbell (c1870)

John J. Campbell (c1872)

Florence Campbell (1872)

Robert Campbell (c1876)

Spencer Alva Campbell was born November 1852 in Marion Dist, SC. He was home with his parents for the 1860 census.

Spencer married Celia A. Johnson ca 1874/75 in Marion Co, SC. She was his first cousin, daughter of Carey Johnson and Ara Campbell.

See their own page for additional information.

A. Campbell (female) was born ca 1855/56 in Marion Dist, SC. She was listed with her parents in 1860 only by initial "A. Campbell" age 4. She was not with them in 1870, so I don't know what her name was.

I also don't know if she married someone before 1870, or if she died before then.

W. W. Sellers mentioned that Ebenezer had a daughter (no name given) who married Leonard Lewis. The Simeon Campbell diary shows that a Nancy Campbell married Leonard Lewis in 1882. Since "Ann" is a nickname for Nancy, I though this might be Nancy (or "Nancy Ann" if you will), but that does not explain her absence from the household in 1870 and 1880. (See Nancy's entry below for more on her).

None of my older relatives knew who this daughter "A. Campbell" might have been.

Nancy Campbell was born December 1864 (per 1900 census) in Marion Dist, SC. The entire family was missing for the 1870 census, but presumably, Nancy would have been home with them then.

She was not with her parents for the 1880 census. W. W. Sellers reported in his entry on the Campbell family that Ebenezer had "... one daughter married Leonard Lewis, and has a family (small) ...". This was written ca 1899-1901 (published 1902).

Simeon Campbell recorded a marriage in his diary for a "Miss Nancy Campbell" to Leonard Lewis on 13 Sep 1882 (page 118).

I found this Leonard and Nancy on the 1900 census in Reeves Township. They were next door to her father Ebenezer. I don't have it typed up yet, but it gave them as Leonard B. Lewis, born May 1860, married 18 years (ca 1881/82), and "Nacy Lewis" born December 1864, no children.

All evidence seems to show that Nancy was a child of Ebenezer, except that she was never with him for any census record (she should be home in 1880). None of my older relatives remembered her.

Her absence in 1880 is not unique. Some of Ebenezer's other children were also missing in 1880. (The entire family was missing in 1870).

George W. Campbell was born November 1867 (per 1900 census) in Marion Co, SC.

The entire family was missing for the 1870 census, but presumably, George would have been home with them then.

George (just like his sister Nancy) was not home with his parents for the 1880 census. He would have been about 12 or 13 then, so could have been off at school somewhere.

George W. Campbell married Fannie J. --- ca 1890/91 in Marion Dist, SC. I don't know her maiden name. I once thought it was "Williamson", but that turns out not to be correct.

They were listed on the 1900 census in Marion Co, SC in Reeves Township just a few houses from his parents.

They were listed on the 1910 census in Marion Co, SC in Reeves Township next door to his sister Florence. I don't have the entry typed up yet.

I haven't yet found them in 1920.

Mary Campbell was born ca 1869/70 in Marion Co, SC. The entire family was missing for the 1870 census, but presumably, Mary would have been home with them then (unless born in late 1870, after the census taker came around).

Mary was home with her parents for the 1880 census.

I did not find Mary after 1880. I don't know if she married someone, or if she died. She was not mentioned in the family write-up by Sellers.

John J. Campbell was born ca 1871/72 in Marion Co, SC. John was home with his parents for the 1880 census.

I did not find him after 1880. I don't know if he moved away, or if he died. He was not mentioned in the family write-up by Sellers.

Florence Campbell was born 28 Jul 1872 (per tombstone) in Marion Co, SC. She was home with her parents for the 1880 census, and with her widowed father in 1900.

In 1910 she was listed as head of household in Marion Co, SC in Reeves Township, next door to her brother George.

Florence never married, and she outlived all of her siblings by many years. My mother remembers visiting her often as a child.

Florence died on 28 Dec 1960 in Marion Co, SC. She is buried near her parents at Zion Methodist Church Cemetery. Her stone says "Florence Campbell Jul 28 1872 - Dec 28 1960".

Robert Campbell was born ca 1875/76 in Marion Co, SC. He was home with his parents for the 1880 census.

I did not find him after 1880. I don't know if he moved away, or if he died. He was not mentioned in the family write-up by Sellers.

My Great Uncle Ira Campbell said he "seemed' to remember his Great Uncle Robert, but wasn't sure. He may have heard him spoke of by other families, if he didn't know him himself.
