I (Marty Grant) am a Great Great grandson of Spencer and Celia Campbell.

Spencer Alva Campbell was born in November 1852 in Marion District, SC, probably just north of Mullins.  I don't know what the origin of his given and middle names were, for no one in the family before him bore those names, as far as I've seen.

Spencer is a son of Ebenezer Campbell and Charlotte Lane. This is proven by the 1860 census, and is also mentioned in :"A History of Marion County, South Carolina" by W.W. Sellers, Esq. 1902. Pg 486:

"Ebby Campbell married Charlotte Lane, and has six children - three sons, Spencer, George and another, name unknown; one daughter married Leonard Lewis, and has a family (small); another daughter married some one unknown; think the other daughter is single."

Spencer was home with his parents for the 1860 census in Marion District, SC.

Strangely, the 1860 census entry was the last record found for him for many years, him not reappearing on the census until 1900. I did not find Spencer, nor his parents on the 1870 census, but it should be noted that many members of the Campbell family and other families that lived near them in Reeves Township were missing that year. I can only conclude that the census taker either missed an entire community, or else when he made the Federal copy of his census records, he somehow left out a few pages.

While his absence in 1870 can be explained, I can not explain his absence in 1880.

Spencer A. Campbell married Celia A. Johnson ca 1874/75 in Marion Co, SC. Her maiden name is proven by her death certificate, and was also common family knowledge and told to me by someone who knew her (her grandson Ira Campbell). Uncle Ira also told me that Celia and Spencer were 1st cousins, which is true. Celia A. Johnson's mother was a sister to Ebenezer Campbell, Spencer's father.

Celia A. Johnson was born 9 Jun 1857 (per death certificate) in Marion Dist, SC. She is a daughter of Carey Johnson and Ara Campbell. As mentioned above, Ara Campbell was a sister to Ebenezer Campbell. I don't know for sure what Celia's middle name was, but "Ann" seems likely, though I've seen no evidence for this.

For some reason, I did not find Spencer and Celia listed on the 1880 census in Marion Co, SC. I'm not sure if they were missed by the census taker, or if they had moved to another county. I've checked the Marion County 1880 census records on microfilm and did not find them. I also checked a published transcript of this record, and they were not listed there either, so it isn't just a case of me not finding them. I have not checked neighboring counties in 1880, since indexes are not yet available, I wouldn't know where to begin to look.

Spencer and Celia and family were listed on the 1900 census in Marion County in Reeves Township (near Mullins).

Spencer and family were listed on the 1910 census in Marion Co, SC, still in Reeves Township. They were next door to their son Willie, who was now married.

Apparently, the Campbells moved from the Mullins area to (or near) the Town of Marion between 1910 and 1920. They may have lived just south of town, but in Marion Township.

Spencer and family is listed on the 1920 census in Marion County, in Marion Township. I don't have this record typed up yet, but will get it soon.

Spencer Campbell died in 1928 in Marion Co, SC. I don't have his exact date of death. He is buried at the Smithy Cemetery, just south of Marion. His grave is marked as "Grandpa Campbell 1852-1928". I can only assume from this marker that some of his grandchildren placed the stone, and did not know what his given name was, perhaps it was placed some years later when there was no one around to ask (though I find this hard to believe, as his name was well known among his family members for several generations).

Celia A. Johnson Campbell died on 18 Jun 1937 (per death certificate) in Marion Co, SC. She is buried next to Spencer at the Smithy Cemetery, and like him, her marker does not have her name on it, but says "Grandma Campbell 1854-1937".

Children

Spencer and Celia had 6 children. These children are proven by the 1900, 1910 and 1920 census, and were also well known among family members, and their names were shared with me by several relatives who knew all of them, including my Great Aunt Dot Turner Campbell, and my Great Uncle Ira Campbell, and others.

Willie Spencer Campbell (1880)

Atle Burke Campbell (1884)

Maud Hattie Campbell (1885)

Arthur Rembert Campbell (1890)

Coy C. Campbell (1891)

Essie Odell Campbell (1898)

Willie Spencer Campbell was born September 1880 (per 1900 census) in Marion Co, SC. He was home with his parents for the 1900 census.

Willie married Henrietta Edwards in 1910 in Horry Co, SC. These are my Great Grandparents.

See their own page for additional information.

Atle Burke Campbell was born January 1884 (per 1900 census) in Marion Co, SC. Burke was home with his parents for the 1900 and 1910 census.

Burke married Elizabeth "Betsy" Rouse ca 1913 in Marion Co, SC.

Burke and family were listed on the 1920 census in Marion Co, SC not too far from his parents in Marion Township. I don't have this typed up yet.

Burke Campbell died in 1939. I don't have the exact date of his death.

He is buried at the Smithy Cemetery near his parents. His stone says "Burke Campbell 1882-1939".

Betsy later married Burke's brother Coy C. Campbell.

Betsy died around 1972/73 in Marion. I don't have the exact date, nor do I know where she is buried.

Burke and Betsy had nine children, a few of whom are still living, I believe.

Maud Hattie Campbell was born September 1885 (per 1900 census) or 2 Sep 1884 per her tombstone. I suspect the day and month are correct, but I don't know about the year, so for the sake of compromise, I say she was born ca 2 Sep 1884/85 in Marion Co, SC. Her older brother was born January 1884, so that is only 8 months before her birth, if she was born in 1884, so that is why I suspect 1885 is correct for her.

She was home with her parents for the 1900 and 1910 census.

She married Ben Tillman Smithy before ca 1918 in Marion County. Tillman was born 3 Feb 1889 (per his tombstone). He was a son of John W. Smithy and Sallie F. ---.

Hattie died, apparently in childbirth, or due to complications, on 12 Aug 1919 in Marion Co, SC. She is buried at the Smithy Cemetery. Her marker says "Hattie Maude Campbell, wife of Tillman Smithy Sep 2, 1884 - Aug 12, 1919".

Tillman and two young children were listed on the 1920 census in Marion County, in Marion Township.

I don't know if Tillman ever remarried, but he died on 29 Jul 1963 in Marion County. He is buried at the Smithy Cemetery, his stone says "Ben Tillman Smithy Feb 3 1889 - Jul 29 1963".

Tillman and Hattie had two children, at least one of whom is deceased.

Arthur Rembert Campbell was born either September 1887 (per 1900 census) or 28 Sep 1890 (per tombstone) in Marion Co, SC. Since both records agree on his month of birth, I'm certain that his birth date was "28 Sep", but since the year is in dispute, I have to go with other records. His age in the 1900, 1910 and 1920 census records are all consistent with a birth of 1887, and not 1890, so I can only conclude that his tombstone is incorrect, and that he was born 28 Sep 1887.

Rembert was home with his parents for the 1900, 1910 and 1920 census.

Rembert Campbell never married.

According to his marker, he served in World War I as a Private in Company H, 55th Pioneer Infantry.

Rembert Campbell died on 12 Sep 1966 in Marion Co, SC. He is buried at the Smithy Cemetery. His marker says "Arthur R. Campbell SC Pvt Co. H. 55 Pioneer Inf. WWI. 28 Sep 1890 - 12 Sep 1966".

Coy C. Campbell was born 24 Nov 1891 (per tombstone) in Marion Co, SC. He was home with his parents for the 1900, 1910 and 1920 census.

Sometime after 1920, Coy married his brother Burke's widow, Elizabeth "Betsy" Rouse. I don't know when they married exactly, nor if they had any children.

Coy died 22 Jan 1961. Betsy died 1973 in Marion Co, SC. They are buried at the Calder Cemetery.

Essie Odell Campbell was born 16 Aug 1898 (per tombstone, agrees with 1900 census record of "Aug 1898") in Marion Co, SC.

Essie was home with her parents for the 1900 and 1910 census.

Essie married Willie J. Sawyer sometime before 1920 in Marion Co, SC. Willie was born 18 Aug 1897 in Marion Co, SC.

Willie and Essie were listed on the 1920 census in Marion Co, SC. I don't have this entry typed up yet.

Essie died on 16 Nov 1951 in Marion Co, SC, and Willie on 16 Jun 1956. They are both buried at the Smithy Cemetery. Their markers say "Willie J. Sawyer Aug 18 1897 - June 16 1956" and "Essie Odell Campbell, wife of Willie J. Sawyer Aug 16 1898 - Nov 16 1951".

Willie and Essie had at least two children, perhaps others. I don't know if any are still living.
