I (Marty Grant) am a 4th Great Grand nephew of Levi Carpenter.

Levi Carpenter was born ca 1816/17 in Burke Co, NC in the Three Mile Creek area that later became Yancey County (in 1833) and Mitchell County (in 1861) and finally became Avery County (in 1911). Levi is a proven son of Jacob and Margaret Carpenter.

I'm not sure who Levi was named after, if anyone. Perhaps someone in his mother's family.

Levi was apparently home with his parents for the 1820 and 1830 census in Burke County.

On 3 Jan 1838, Levi Carpenter received a State land grant in Yancey County, for 50 acres on North side of Doe Hill adjoining Jacob Carpenter (his father), on William Carpenter (his brother), and Doe Hill (a mountain, I believe). (Yancey Co, NC Deed Book 1 page 365 from "Index and Abstract of Deeds of Yancey Co., NC Deed Book 1" by Sally Williams, 1985).

On 21 Dec 1838, Levi Carpenter received a State land grant in Yancey County, for 100 acres on waters of North Toe River, on South East end of Sugar Camp Mountain, and on West side of Canetuck Ridge. (Yancey Co, NC Deed Book 1 page 365 from "Index and Abstract of Deeds of Yancey Co., NC Deed Book 1" by Sally Williams, 1985).

Levi Carpenter married Catherine Dellinger before ca 1839 in Yancey Co, NC. She is a child of Henry Dellinger and Catherine Setzer, all formerly of Lincoln Co, NC. Her parents are proven by the Revolutionary War Pension files of her grandfather John Dellinger (thanks to Kathy Gunter Sullivan for sharing that data.)

There is some question as to where Catherine was born. Some researchers show Lincoln Co, NC, which is where the Dellinger and Setzer family originated. The 1850 census record shows her birth place as "NC". However, the 1860 census shows "Indiana" and the 1870 shows "Ohio", so I don't know which is correct!

Henry Dellinger didn't show up in Burke until 1830. There were no Dellinger's in Burke in 1820 or 1810, but there was a John Dellinger there in 1800. There was a Henry Dellinger in 1820 Lincoln Co, NC census index. In 1810 Lincoln, there were two Henry's listed.

In 1830 Burke, Henry Dellinger was listed. He had a daughter age 10-15, born ca 1815/20, which was probably Catherine (1816). In 1840 Yancey County, Henry Dellinger was listed near the Carpenters and other Three Mile Creek residents. Henry and Catherine Dellinger were listed on the 1850 Watauga Co, NC census next to John Vance and Elizabeth Davis Vance, Levi Carpenter's 1st cousin.

Levi Carpenter was listed on the 1840 census in Yancey Co, NC several houses from his father Jacob, but on the same page. He was much closer to his father-in-law Henry Dellinger, just three houses away.

Levi Carpenter was listed on the 1840 tax list in Yancey County in Captain Vance's Company. He was taxed for 150 acres, valued at $50, and he had one white poll (himself), and his tax was $1.75. (Toe Valley Genealogical Society Newsletter, Volume 5, Number 8,  October 1993, 1840 Yancey County Tax List, Capt Vance's Company by Kathy Sullivan)

Levi's 150 acres in 1840 agrees with his deed records, showing a 100 acre grant and a 50 acre grant, both in 1838.

Levi Carpenter was listed on the 1841 tax list in Yancey County in Captain Swan's Company. He was taxed for 340 acres (190 more than in 1840), valued at $212, and he had one white poll (himself). (Toe Valley Genealogical Society Newsletter, Volume 5, Number 9,  November 1993, 1841 Yancey County Tax List, Capt Swan's Company by Kathy Sullivan)

Levi may have been charged with his father's lands in 1841, since Jacob had 130 acres in 1840, but none in 1841. This is still not enough to make up the difference. Levi had 150 in 1840 (which agrees with his deed records), but 340 acres in 1841. That is 190 additional acres, not yet accounted for.

In the Spring 1848 term of Yancey County Court, the Valuations of Yancey County lands were all reduced  by 33 1/3 cent per acre. Levi Carpenter was listed in North Toe River District with his land of $500 reduced to $333 1/3. (Toe Valley Genealogical Society Newsletter, Volume 2, Number 6,  August 1990, "Yancey County Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions Minutes to Spring Term 1848" extracted by Rhonda Gunter)

Levi was named as a son in his father's Will of 8 Sep 1849.

Levi and family were listed on the 1850 census in Yancey County, next door to his parents.

Though he was apparently older than the average soldier, Levi served in the Civil War and died at Camp Douglass, Illinois in Dec. 1864. (Thanks to Phil Carpenter for the death information.)

Mitchell County was formed in 1861 from the section of Yancey where the Carpenters lived.

Catherine and family were listed in Mitchell County, in Toe River Township for the 1870 census. She was next door (just as in 1860) to her brother-in-law William Carpenter. This time, Catherine's birth place was given as "Ohio".

Catherine Dellinger Carpenter died 3 Dec 1878 in Mitchell (now Avery) Co, NC. Her nephew, Jacob Carpenter (1833) wrote of her death in his "Anthology of Death":

"Cathern Carpenter ag 71 did Dec 3 1878. Wars good christon."

As he often did, Jacob got her age wrong. She was not 71 when she died, but 61.

I don't know where Catherine is buried.

Children

Levi Carpenter and Catherine Dellinger had at least thirteen children, as proven by the 1850-1870 census records. An apparent Grand daughter named "Susanna" born ca 1865 was with Catherine in 1870. I don't know who her parents were, so for the sake of keeping track of her, I'm including her in the list of children.

David L. Carpenter (c1839)

Matilda Louisa Carpenter (c1841)

Reuben H. Carpenter (1842-1898)

Lydia P. Carpenter (c1843-1929)

Eliza C. Carpenter (c1846-1927)

John C. Carpenter (c1847-1931)

Margaret Catherine Carpenter (c1849-1895)

Henry Sylvester Carpenter (c1850)

Jacob J. Carpenter (c1852)

Susannah Carpenter (c1853-1911)

Andrea Amanda Carpenter (c1854)

Sophia E. Carpenter (c1858)

Helen Lavina Carpenter (c1860)

Susanna Carpenter (Gr-dau?) (c1864/65)

David L. Carpenter was born ca 1838/39 in Yancey Co, NC in the area that later became Mitchell County (in 1861) and finally became Avery County (in 1911).

David was apparently home with his parents for the 1840 census, and was with them in 1850 and 1860 in Yancey Co, NC.

I did not find David in 1870. He may have moved away, or possibly died during the Civil War. It is possible that Susanna Carpenter, born ca 1864/65 is his daughter. She was with David's mother in the 1870 census.

Matilda Louisa Carpenter was born ca 1840/41 in Yancey Co, NC in the area that later became Mitchell County (in 1861) and finally became Avery County (in 1911).

"Matilda L. Carpenter" was with her parents for the 1850 and 1860 census in Yancey Co, NC.

She married Nelson Ollis in 1867 in Mitchell Co, NC. Their marriage record is recorded in Mitchell county in the 1867 marriages, but the date is blank for them. She is listed as "Louisa Carpenter" daughter of "Levi and Catherine Carpenter" and he as "Nelson Ollis" son of "John and Fanny Ollis". (Toe Valley Genealogical Society Newsletter, Volume 2, Number 1, March 1990, "Mitchell County Marriage Records 1865-1869" extracted by Rhonda Gunter)

I have no additional data on their family at this time.

Reuben H. Carpenter was born 15 Oct 1842 in Yancey Co, NC in the area that later became Mitchell County (in 1861) and finally became Avery County (in 1911). I'm not sure what the source for his birth date is.

Reuben was with his parents for the 1850 and 1860 census in Yancey County.

I did not find him in 1870.

Reuben Carpenter married Martha J. Banner before 1880, in Mitchell Co, NC. They were listed on the 1880 census in Mitchell County, with no children, but an Abram Banner, age 14 residing with them, listed as Reuben's "Brother-in-law".

Reuben died in Mitchell County (now Avery) on 7 Feb 1898.

I don't yet have the 1900, 1910 or 1920 census records for this family.

Martha died in Avery Co, NC on 15 Jan 1929. I don't know where either are buried. Nor am I sure of the source of their death dates.

Lydia P. Carpenter was born ca 1842/43 in Yancey Co, NC in the area that later became Mitchell County (in 1861) and finally became Avery County (in 1911).

Lydia was with her parents for the 1850 and 1860 census.

She married John Wise ca 1860/70 in Mitchell Co, NC. He was a son of Josiah G. Wise and Margaret Davis.

I currently have no additional data on this family.

Eliza C. Carpenter was born ca 1845/46 in Yancey Co, NC in the area that later became Mitchell County (in 1861) and finally became Avery County (in 1911).

Eliza was home with her parents for the 1850, 1860 and 1870 census.

Eliza married James G. Franklin on 23 Jan 1873 in Mitchell Co, NC. Their marriage record showed "James G. Franklin" son of David and Elisabeth Franklin, and "Elvira C. Carpenter" daughter of Levi and Catherine Carpenter, married by T. D. Vance, JP. (Toe Valley Genealogical Society Newsletter, Volume 2, Number 5,  July 1990, "Mitchell County Marriage Records 1865-1889" extracted by Rhonda Gunter)

I currently have no additional data on this family.

John C. Carpenter was born ca 1846/47 in Yancey Co, NC in the area that later became Mitchell County (in 1861) and finally became Avery County (in 1911).

John was home with his parents for the 1850, 1860 and 1870 census.

John married Mary --- ca 1872 in Mitchell Co, NC.

They were listed on the 1880 census in Mitchell County. John's sister Sophia was residing with them.

Margaret Catherine Carpenter was born ca 1848/49 in Yancey Co, NC in the area that later became Mitchell County (in 1861) and finally became Avery County (in 1911).

Catherine was home with her parents for the 1850, 1860 and 1870 census.

Catherine married J. S. Wiseman on 12 Feb 1877 in Mitchell Co, NC. Their marriage record showed "J. S. Wiseman" son of "A. A. & Olly Wiseman" and "Cathrin Carpenter"  daughter of "Levi & Cathrin Carpenter", married by L. D. Vance, JP. (Toe Valley Genealogical Society Newsletter, Volume 3, Number 3,  May 1991, "Mitchell County Marriage Records 1865-1889" extracted by Rhonda Gunter)

I do not have additional data on this family at present.

Henry Sylvester Carpenter was born ca 1850 in Yancey Co, NC in the area that later became Mitchell County (in 1861) and finally became Avery County (in 1911).

"Sylvester Carpenter" age 4 months was with his parents for the 1850 census. "Henry S. Carpenter" age 9 was with them in 1860. I'm fairly sure they are one and the same person. In 1870 he was listed as just "Henry Carpenter", residing with his widowed mother.

I did not find Henry in 1880.

Jacob J. Carpenter was born ca 1851/52 in Yancey Co, NC in the area that later became Mitchell County (in 1861) and finally became Avery County (in 1911).

Jacob was with his parents for the 1860 and 1870 census.

He married Hannah Adelaid Hughes sometime after 1870. She was a granddaughter of Wilson Burleson and Frances Davis.

I did not find Jacob in 1880.

Susannah Carpenter was born ca 1852/53 in Yancey Co, NC in the area that later became Mitchell County (in 1861) and finally became Avery County (in 1911).

Susannah was home with her parents for the 1860 and 1870 census.

Susannah married Augustus David Childs on 6 Apr 1876 in Mitchell Co, NC. Their marriage record gave "A. D. Childs" son of "A. D. and D. M. Childs" and "Susan Carpenter" daughter of "Livi Carpenter". Married by L. D. Vance, JP. (Toe Valley Genealogical Society Newsletter, Volume 3, Number 2,  April 1991, "Mitchell County Marriage Records 1865-1889" extracted by Rhonda Gunter)

I have no additional data on this family at present.

Andrea Amanda Carpenter was born ca 1853/54 in Yancey Co, NC in the area that later became Mitchell County (in 1861) and finally became Avery County (in 1911).

"Mandy" was home with her parents in 1860 (listed as "Andreah") and in 1870 (listed as "Mandy").

I have no additional data on Mandy at present.

Sophia E. Carpenter was born ca 1857/58 in Yancey Co, NC in the area that later became Mitchell County (in 1861) and finally became Avery County (in 1911).

Sophia was home with her parents for the 1860 and 1870 census, and with her brother John for the 1880 census.

Sophia Carpenter married her cousin Exerces "Zez" Carpenter  after 1880 in Mitchell Co, NC. He was a son of Jacob Carpenter and Evaline Pyatte.

I have no additional data on this family at present.

Helen Lavina Carpenter was born ca 1860 in Yancey Co, NC in the area that later became Mitchell County (in 1861) and finally became Avery County (in 1911).

"Helen A. Carpenter" was with her parents for the 1860 census, age 3 months. In 1870, "Lavina" age 9 was with them. I'm not totally sure they are one and the same person, but probably are.

I have no additional data on her at present.

Susanna Carpenter (Gr-dau?) was born ca 1864/65 in Mitchell County in the area that later became Avery County (in 1911).

Susanna is certainly not a child of Levi and Catherine for two reasons, one, they already had a daughter name Susannah, and two, she was born at least a year after Levi died. I believe she was a granddaughter, possibly a child of David or one of the other older children.

Susanna was home with her grandmother Catherine for the 1870 census.

I have no additional data on her at present.
