I (Marty Grant) am a 5th Great Grandson of Jacob and Margaret Carpenter.
Jacob Carpenter was born ca 1778/79 in either Rowan County, NC (where his father was in 1775) or in the Hunting Creek area of Surry County (now Yadkin) where his father was in 1782. I think Surry is more likely. Jacob is a proven son of Mathias Carpenter and Elizabeth Miller.
Jacob was apparently home with his parents in Surry County for the 1786 and 1790 census. The Carpenter family moved to the New River Valley and settled in the Rich Hill Creek area shortly after 1790, and Jacob was with them. This was Wilkes County until 1799 when Ashe County was formed.
Jacob was apparently home with his parents for the 1800 census in Ashe County, NC.
On 7 Nov 1800, Jacob Carpenter received a land Grant for land on the Left side of Rich Hill Creek in Ashe County. (Ashe Co, NC Deed Book B page 290).
On 27 Nov 1800, Jacob Carpenter entered 100 acres on the north side of the North Fork of New River on Rich Hill Creek. (Ashe Co, NC Land Entries # 270).
Right around this timeframe (1800-1805), Jacob Carpenter did two important things. I don't know which order he did them in though. First (or second?) he married Margaret --- before 1805. Second (or first?) he moved to the Three Mile Creek area of Burke County, also before 1805.
I have not been able to determine Margaret's maiden name, nor find any strong clues about what is was. I also don't know if they married in Ashe County and then moved to Burke, or if Jacob found Margaret after moving to Burke and married her there. Recently, I've seen several researchers listing Margaret as a "Davis", but I have no clue where that came from, and neither do any of them when I ask.
Although Jacob moved to old Burke County (in an area that became Yancey County in 1833, Mitchell County in 1861, and Avery County in 1911), he did not sell off his Ashe County lands until years later. Presumably his father and / or brothers-in-law looked after his Ashe County land for him, renting it out or whatever. Jacob's brother-in-law William Davis had moved that area of old Burke County several years before, and that is probably why Jacob followed, after hearing favorable reports of the land, or visiting it himself.
Jacob Carpenter was listed on the 1805 Burke County tax list. He was listed with one taxable (himself) and 80 acres. I haven't located the deed, or land grant, where he obtained this land. Most of the early Burke County records were destroyed during the Civil War.
Jacob Carpenter was listed on the 1810 census in Burke County, NC. He was the only Carpenter listed in Burke at that time. He was living next to his brother-in-law William Davis.

Jacob Carpenter was listed on the 1815 Burke County tax list in Captain White's company. He was listed twice, once for 77 acres on Three Mile Creek, and $80 value, and 1 white taxable, and 0 blacks. He was also listed for 100 acres on Three Mile Creek and $100 value and no taxables on that land. I don't know the origin of this land, as most early Burke County records were destroyed during the Civil War.
Jacob Carpenter was also listed on the 1815 Ashe County tax list. He was in Captain Sutherland's district, and listed between his brothers-in-law Jonathan Miller and Joseph Roten. He was listed with 100 acres, at $50 value and zero polls (he didn't live there) and his land bordered state land. A transcribed version of this tax list shows him as "Jonathan Carpenter".
Jacob Carpenter was listed on the 1820 census in Burke County. His brother-in-law William Davis was two houses away.

Jacob Carpenter was listed on the 1830 census in Burke County. He was still just two houses from his brother-in-law William Davis.

On 21 Sep 1832, Jacob Carpenter "of Burke" gave his 100 acres of Ashe County land to "my son David" of "Ashe" for "natural love". The deed described the land as the same entered by Jacob Carpenter in 1800 on Left Fork of Rich Hill Creek. Jacob's son David Carpenter lived in Ashe a couple of years before rejoining his father in old Burke. Jacob's nephew Jacob Davis witnessed the deed, along with Reuben Peppers. (Ashe Co, NC Deed Book M page 318).
The section of Burke County where Jacob and family resided was cut off in 1833 to form Yancey County.
On 17 Apr 1835, Isaih Franklin of Yancey Co, NC made a deed with Samuel Calloway, Jacob Carpenter, Samuel Franklin and Samuel Carpenter (Jacob's son) for one house saddle and bridle, and household furniture and farming tools, all for $16. This was apparently a mortgage deed, whereby Isaiah Franklin was borrowing money with all those items as his collateral. (Yancey Co, NC Deed Book 1 page 64 from "Index and Abstract of Deeds of Yancey Co., NC Deed Book 1" by Sally Williams, 1985).
Jacob's parents died in 1835 in Ashe County. Jacob's father Mathias Carpenter had large land holdings, and he left no Will. On 28 Oct 1835 several deeds were made by the various heirs dividing the land up amongst themselves.
The heirs were listed as Jonathan Miller, Margaret Miller (wife of Jonathan), Franky Davis, Jacob Davis (son of Franky), Jacob Carpenter, Joseph Roten, Mary Roten (wife of Joseph), Christena Carpenter and David Carpenter. (See Mathias' page for a complete accounting).
Jacob and the other heirs deeded David Carpenter 100 acres on Buffalo Creek. (Ashe Co, NC Deed Book G page 165)
Jacob and the other heirs deeded David Carpenter 5 acres somewhere. (Ashe Co, NC Deed Book G page 165)
Jacob and the other heirs deeded Joseph Roten 300 acres on the North Fork of New River including the "Big Spring". (Ashe Co, NC Deed Book G page 165).
Jacob Carpenter apparently kept 150 acres in Ashe County, on Laurel Fork for himself, and sold it many years later (1855).
Jacob Carpenter was listed on the 1835 Congressional Voter List as a voter at Oakes Precinct in Yancey County.
On 28 Dec 1836, Jacob Carpenter was mentioned in a land grant to William Davis Sen (his brother-in-law) as a neighboring land owner for land on Three Mile Creek. (Yancey Co, NC Deed Book 1 page 156 from "Index and Abstract of Deeds of Yancey Co., NC Deed Book 1" by Sally Williams, 1985).
On the same date (28 Dec 1836), Jacob was again mentioned in a land grant, this one to his son William Carpenter for land on North East side of Doe Hill. (Yancey Co, NC Deed Book 1 page 196 from "Index and Abstract of Deeds of Yancey Co., NC Deed Book 1" by Sally Williams, 1985).
On 3 Jul 1838, Jacob Carpenter was mentioned as an adjoining land owner in a land grant to Levi Carpenter (his son), for land on Doe Hill. (Yancey Co, NC Deed Book 1 page 365 from "Index and Abstract of Deeds of Yancey Co., NC Deed Book 1" by Sally Williams, 1985).
Jacob Carpenter was listed on the 1840 census in Yancey County. His brother-in-law William Davis was not listed nearby this time (though they were still neighbors).

Jacob Carpenter was listed on the 1840 tax list in Yancey County in Captain Vance's Company. He was taxed for 130 acres, valued at $150, and he had no white polls (he was over age, apparently), and his tax was 75 cents. (Toe Valley Genealogical Society Newsletter, Volume 5, Number 8, October 1993, 1840 Yancey County Tax List, Capt Vance's Company by Kathy Sullivan)
Jacob Carpenter was listed on the 1841 tax list in Yancey County in Captain Swan's Company. He was taxed for 0 acres (he had 130 acres in 1840), valued at $0, and he had no white polls, and two black polls (apparently slaves). (What happened to his land?) (Toe Valley Genealogical Society Newsletter, Volume 5, Number 9, November 1993, 1841 Yancey County Tax List, Capt Swan's Company by Kathy Sullivan)
Jacob Carpenter made his Will on 8 Sep 1849 in Yancey County, though he did not die until seven years later. His Will is recorded in Yancey County Will Book 1 page 111:
In the name of God, Amen. I JACOB CARPENTER, formerly a resident of Surry County, but for many years past a resident of Burke now Yancey County in the State of North Carolina being advanced in years infirm of body, but of a sound mind and disposing memory, Calling to mind the uncertainty of life and the certainty of death do hereby make ordain and publish, this as my Last Will and Testament. PYATTE to be equally divided among them, share and share alike.
Item the sixth. I constitute and appoint LEANDER PYATTE Executor of this Will. I have this the 8th day of September in the year of our Lord (1849) made ordained and published this as my Last Will and Testament, revoking all former Wills and have signed the same in the presence of each of each other and in the presence of the testator.
- JACOB CARPENTER (seal)
- Attest. WILLIAM DAVIS
- GEORGE W. DAVIS
Jacob's nephew William Davis and William's son George W. Davis were the witnesses to his Will.
Jacob Carpenter was listed on the 1850 census in Yancey County, NC between his son Levi Carpenter and his son-in-law Leander Pyatt. Jacob's grandson Thomas D. Carpenter was residing with them.

On 10 Dec 1855, Jacob Carpenter sold 150 acres in Ashe County, NC to John Graybeal. The land was on Laurel Fork. Though the deed does not say so, I believe this was land he inherited from his father. Witnesses were Joseph Roten (Jacob's brother-in-law) and David Graybeal.
Jacob Carpenter died in Yancey County on 18 Jul 1856. His grandson (and namesake) Jacob Carpenter wrote of him in his "Anthology of Death": (some punctuation added by me)
"Jacob Carpenter age 86 dide July 18 1856. Wars farmer and coper to make hoses and md brand and never hade drunker in his family and never had Dockor in his family. No sickness. ra 12 children"
Properly translated, Jacob said that his grandfather died at age 86 (which was wrong, he was only 77 or 78), and that he was a Farmer and Cooper and made "hoses" (houses?) and he made Brandy but had no drunks in his family, and no one ever needed a Doctor. He raised 12 children (only nine are known, but census records show there were at least 2 more, who probably died young).
Jacob Carpenter is probably buried somewhere near Three Mile Creek. His sister and brother-in-law Frances and William Davis are buried in a small cemetery on Three Mile Creek, and it is possible that Jacob and other family members are there as well, in unmarked graves.
Widowed Margaret Carpenter was listed by herself on the 1860 census in Yancey County. However she wasn't alone by much, her grandson Jacob Carpenter was in the next house, and on the other side was her son Levi Carpenter.
1860 YANCEY CO, NC Page House/Family # 1203/1203 CARPENTER MARGARET 71 F W NC 1788/1789
Mitchell County was created in 1861 from the section of Yancey where the Carpenters lived.
I did not locate Margaret on the 1870 census though she must have been in Mitchell somewhere.
Margaret died on 5 Jun 1875 in Mitchell County. Her grandson Jacob also wrote of her death in his writings:
"Margit Carpenter age 87 dide Jun 5 1875. Wars good womin. Good for pore, she did not have no bed to slep on when she was marid. She slip on der skin til mard but that lok lik hard times. No womin had to li on derskins when was mared."
In other words, she was age 87 when she died (which was correct). She was a good woman, she was poor, and had no bed to sleep on before she married, and had to sleep on a deer skin until she married Jacob Carpenter. "No woman had to lie on deerskins when she was married".
Margaret is probably buried next to Jacob, wherever that might be.
Jacob and Margaret Carpenter had nine proven children, and at least two more are indicated by early census records. This makes eleven. Jacob Carpenter (1833) (Grandson of the elder Jacob) said that his grandfather raised "12" children. Jacob (Sr) named nine children in his Will of 1849. The other three apparently died before then.
William Carpenter (c1805-1881)
David Carpenter (c1806-1870/80)
Elizabeth Carpenter (c1821-c1876)
Frances Matilda Carpenter (1828-1902)
William Carpenter was born ca 1804/05 in Burke (later Yancey, later Mitchell, now Avery) Co, NC. I don't know who he was named after, possibly after his Uncle William Davis.
William Carpenter is a proven son of Jacob Carpenter, as named in his Will of 1849.
William Carpenter married Elizabeth Wilson in 1831 in Burke (later Yancey) Co ,NC. See his own page for additional information on them.
David Carpenter was born ca 1805/06 in Burke (later Yancey, later Mitchell, now Avery) Co, NC. He was probably named after his Uncle David Carpenter.
David Carpenter is a proven son of Jacob Carpenter, as named in his Will of 1849, and also in an 1832 deed where Jacob gave land to his "son" David Carpenter.
David Carpenter married twice, his first wife is unknown. He married second to Mira Gregg ca 1840. See his own page for additional information on them.
Unknown Daughter was born ca 1804/1810. An apparent child this age was with Jacob Carpenter on the 1810, 1820 and 1830 census, but gone by 1840. She either died or married by then. She was not named in Jacob's Will of 1849, so probably dead before then.
Sophia Carpenter was born ca 1809/10 in Burke (later Yancey, later Mitchell, now Avery) Co, NC. I don't know who she might have been named after.
Sophia was apparently home with her parents for the 1810, and 1820 census.
Sophia Carpenter married Gabriel English during the 1820-1830 timeframe, in Burke County, NC (no marriage record found). Gabriel was born ca 1808/09, and other researchers list him as a child of Henry English and Rachel Oakes.
Gabriel English and his parents, etc, lived in the section of old Burke that became McDowell County in 1842.
Regarding the English family, I fount that there were none in Burke County in 1790, though several were in nearby county of Rutherford.
In 1800, there were still no English families in Burke.
In 1810, Henry English was the only one listed in Burke County, and with apparent wife and several children, including 3 sons under age 10, which would include son Gabriel (c1809). They were just a few households from Jacob Carpenter, so in or near the Three Mile Creek area.
In 1820, Henry English was still in Burke, but clearly had moved to the area of Burke that later became McDowell County. He had two boys with him age 10-15, born ca 1804/10, and that would include son Gabriel (c1809).
In 1830, Henry English was listed one page from his recently married son Gabriel English in Burke County. Gabriel was listed in Burke County next to Jefferson Hensley, in what was soon to become McDowell County.

In 1842, McDowell County was formed from part of Burke, including where the English family resided.
On 8 Sep 1849, Sophia was named in her father's Will as daughter "Sophia English".
Gabriel and Sophia were listed on the 1850 census in McDowell County. They were just a few houses from his parents and several siblings. Sophia's sister Mary Cuthbertson was a few pages away. Jane and William Swann were residing with them, as was John Bowman. I don't know who (or if) they were related to the English or Carpenter families. There were other members of the Swann family residing with other English families, so that must be where the connection is.

Gabriel and Sophia were still in McDowell for the 1860 census. Their Post Office was listed as North Cove. Emily Franklin, age 7 was with the family in 1860. She could be a niece of Sophia, a child of her sister Nancy Franklin. John Williams, age 11 was there also, don't know how, or if, he is related. Also listed was Jane Swan, age 27, possibly same girl from 1850, though the age doesn't match.

I don't have the 1880 census record yet.
Sophia Carpenter English died in 1889 in McDowell County, and Gabriel English died in 1890. I don't know where they were buried.
Gabriel and Sophia had no children.
Samuel Carpenter was born 3 Jan 1814 in Burke (later Yancey, later Mitchell, now Avery) Co, NC. I don't know who he was named after, possibly after someone on his mother's side of the family.
Samuel Carpenter is a proven son of Jacob Carpenter, as named in his Will of 1849.
Samuel Carpenter married Frances Vaughn ca 1837 in Yancey Co ,NC. See his own page for additional information on them.
Levi Carpenter was born ca 1816/17 in Burke (later Yancey, later Mitchell, now Avery) Co, NC. I don't know who he was named after, possibly after someone on his mother's side of the family.
Levi Carpenter is a proven son of Jacob Carpenter, as named in his Will of 1849.
Levi Carpenter married Catherine Dillinger ca 1838 in Yancey Co ,NC. See his own page for additional information on them.
Elizabeth Carpenter was born ca 1820/21 in Burke (later Yancey, later Mitchell, now Avery) Co, NC. I suspect she was named after her grandmother, Elizabeth Miller Carpenter.
Elizabeth was apparently home with her parents for the 1830 census in Burke Co, NC.
Elizabeth Carpenter married Martin D. Wiseman ca 1838 in Yancey Co, NC. Martin was born ca 1818 in Burke County. Other researchers show him as a child of Bedford Wiseman (1799) and Mary Jennings. And Bedford as a child of William Wiseman (1739-1830) and Lydia Bedford.
Regarding the early Wiseman family, I found a Thomas and William Wiseman listed in Burke on the 1790 census.
In 1800 Burke, there were several Wisemans listed, including two William's and a Martin Wiseman (probably the namesake of our Martin D. Wiseman). Neither William seemed the same age as William (1739), but only one of the Williams had a son under 10 (born 1790/1800, which could be Bedford Wiseman (1799). Martin Wiseman had two sons that age.
In 1810 Burke, there were several Wiseman listings, including apparent widow Ann Wiseman, just three houses from Jacob Carpenter, and also William Sr (bef 1765) on the next page. He had one son age 10-15, born ca 1794/1800, so that must be Bedford (1799). There was another William Wiseman (1765/84) several pages away.
In 1820 Burke, Bedford Wiseman was listed, with 2 boys under 10, born ca 1810/20, one of which was son Martin D. Wiseman. Bedford's supposed father, William Wiseman was several pages away, but two houses from Jacob Carpenter. These were the only two Wiseman listings in Burke in 1820.
In 1830 Burke, Bedford Wiseman was listed in the Three Mile Creek area. A few houses away was Alexander Wiseman, a possible sibling of his. Bedford had two boys age 10-15, born ca 1815/20 with him, one of which was probably son Martin D. Wiseman. Bedford and Alexander were the only Wiseman's listed in 1830 Burke.
Yancey County was formed in 1833 from Burke, including where the Carpenter and Wiseman families lived.
Martin Wiseman was listed on the 1840 census in Yancey Co, NC. They were next to Elizabeth's brother Samuel Carpenter. Other Wisemans listed in 1840 included Josiah, Alexander, William, Bedford (Martin's father, just a few houses from him) and "Center" Wiseman.

On 8 Sep 1849, Elizabeth's father made his Will in Yancey County. He named her among his daughters as "Elizabeth Wiseman".
Martin and Elizabeth were listed on the 1850 census in Yancey County. They weren't listed near any of Elizabeth's family, but probably not too far from them. There were numerous other Wisemans in 1850 Yancey County as well, including Martin's parents Bedford and Mary Wiseman. Their next door neighbors were Benjamin Gilbert and Jesse Blalock. Nancy E. Carpenter was born ca 1821/22 in Burke (later Yancey, later Mitchell, now Avery) Co, NC. I don't know who she might have been named after, if anyone.
Nancy was apparently home with her parents for the 1830 census in Burke County.
Nancy married a Mr. Franklin per her father's Will (1849). I found two Nancy Franklin's in the 1850 census, one born ca 1827 married to James M. Franklin. They were listed next to David Carpenter, so at first I assumed this was Nancy Carpenter. However, other researchers tell me that Nancy Carpenter married John S. Franklin and not James M. Franklin, so this must be a different Nancy. However, I've not seen proof either way, but certain evidence (and other researchers) make Nancy, wife of John, seem the more likely one.
Nancy married John Sewell Franklin before 1839 in Yancey Co, NC. John was born ca 1818. I don't know who his parents were.
Concerning the Franklin family, I found a John Franklin Sr and Jr in 1790 Burke County.
In 1800 Burke, there was John Franklin (bef 1755), John (1755/74), Jonathan (1755/74) and Moses Franklin (1755/74).
In 1810 Burke, there was John (bef 1765), Jonathan (1765/84), John Sr (bef 1765) all next to each other, and near them was Moses Franklin (1765/84). Several pages away was another John (bef 1765), and a few more pages away was Samuel (1765/84).
In 1820 Burke, there were several still, including John (bef 1775) and Samuel (1775/94) near each other; both of whom each had 2 sons under 10, born ca 1810/20, which could be John Sewell Franklin (c1818). Several pages away was apparent widow Phebe Franklin (bef 1775); several more pages away was David Franklin (1794/1804), and on the next page was Lewis Franklin (bef 1775).
Of all those in 1820, only three had sons under 10 (born ca 1810/20), and they were John, Samuel and Lewis. One of those may be John Sewell Franklin's father.
In 1830 Burke, there were several Franklins again. I'll only list those that had a male child about John Sewell Franklins age. Samuel Franklin (1770/80) had one son age 10-15, or born ca 1815/20. John Franklin (1760/70) had two sons in that age group. David Franklin (1800/10) had one son that age.
In 1833, Yancey County was formed from Burke, including where the Carpenters and several of the Franklin families resided, though several Franklin families were still within Burke County for the 1840 census. I've ignored them for the time being.
In 1840 Yancey, there was John (Sewell) Franklin next door to his father-in-law Jacob Carpenter. Samuel Franklin (1770/80) was near by. That may make him the prime candidate for John's father. However, Samuel, in 1840, had an apparent son age 20-29 with him, and in 1830 only had one child in the corresponding age group (10-15), which if John, should be gone by 1840.

John Franklin was listed on the 1840 tax list in Yancey County in Captain Vance's Company. He was taxed for 25 acres, valued at $12, and he had one white poll (himself), and his tax was $1.56. (Toe Valley Genealogical Society Newsletter, Volume 5, Number 8, October 1993, 1840 Yancey County Tax List, Capt Vance's Company by Kathy Sullivan)
"Nancy Franklin" was named in Jacob Carpenter's 1849 Will as his daughter.
John and Nancy were in Watauga County for the 1850 census. Isaac Franklin, age 47 and Isaac Franklin age 45 were both 5 and 6 houses away. One could be John's brother.

I have not searched for additional data on this family yet.
Mary Carpenter was born 15 Feb 1826 in Burke (later Yancey, later Mitchell, now Avery) Co, NC. She was probably named for her Aunt Mary Carpenter Roten.
Mary was apparently home with her parents for the 1830 and 1840 census.
Mary married Joseph McKinley Cuthbertson sometime before 1846 in Yancey Co, NC.
Other researchers show that Joseph Cuthbertson was a son of Thomas (1776-1829) and Martha Cuthbertson. I don't know Martha's maiden name. Thomas was a son of William Cuthbertson (1740/50) and Rachel Montieth (1740/50).
Regarding the Cuthbertson family, I found none in Burke County in 1790, unless David "Culbertson" was actually a Cuthbertson. I have seen the name misspelled that way several times.
In 1800, there was a "William Culberson" in Burke. This is probably William Cuthbertson (1740/50), father of Thomas (1776). He had one male in Thomas' age group, age 16-25, or born ca 1774/84.
In 1810, there was "William Culberson" in Burke. This was William (1740/50). He had no one Thomas' age with him, but since Thomas was about 34 years old then, he may have been on his on somewhere else.
In 1820, William and son David were listed near each other in Burke, William Cuthbertson Jr (probably a son of William Sr?) was several pages away, and several more pages away was Thomas Cuthbertson. As best I can tell, all were in the section of Burke County that later became McDowell County. Thomas Cuthbertson had one son under 10, born ca 1810/20, which was probably Joseph M. Cuthbertson (1818).
In 1830 Burke, there was William Cuthbertson (1780/90), William Sr (1740/50), and widow Martha (1780/90), and David (1780/90). Martha was the widow of Thomas Cuthbertson. She had three sons, one under 5 (born ca 1825/30), one 5 to 9 (ca 1820/25) and one 15-19 (ca 1810/15). None of these are a perfect match for her son Joseph M. Cuthbertson (1818), but I suspect he was the age 15-19 one, just enumerated in the wrong column. Either that, or the researchers who have concluded that Joseph was a son of Thomas and Martha were incorrect about it. William (Jr) and David both, in 1830, had sons in Joseph's age group. Could one of them be his parents instead? All of these were in the part of Burke that later became McDowell County.
In 1833, Yancey County was formed from part of Burke, taking the area where the Carpenter family lived. However, the Cuthbertsons mostly remained in Burke (until McDowell was formed).
The 1840 census for Yancey shows only Nathaniel Cuthbertson (1810/20). The bulk of the family was in Burke still, including widow Martha Cuthbertson, who once again did not have anyone exactly Joseph's age with her. He would have been 21 or 22 in 1840, and she only had one male 10-14 (1825/30), and one 15-19 (born 1820/25). Unless this older one was Joseph, then he wasn't home. At his age, he could have been residing elsewhere as a laborer or something. Of the other Cuthbertson households in 1840, Nathan, (next door to Martha) had someone in their 20's living with them. Nathan had one male 20-29 (1810/20), and one male 40-49 (1790/1800), which was presumably Nathan himself. This could be Joseph residing with him. David Cuthbertson also had a male in his 20's with him.
So anyway, Joseph married Mary Carpenter prior to 1846, presumably in Yancey County, where she resided, though they probably went back to McDowell County right away.
"Mary Cuthbertson" was named in her father Jacob Carpenter's 1849 Will.
Joseph and Mary were in McDowell County for the 1850 census, just a few pages from her sister Sophia English.

I don't have the 1880 or 1900 census records yet for this family.
Mary Carpenter Cuthbertson died in Mitchell Co, NC on 4 Jun 1900. I don't know where they are buried.
Frances Matilda Carpenter was born 9 Dec 1828 in Burke (later Yancey, later Mitchell, now Avery) Co, NC. She was probably named in part, after her Aunt Frances Carpenter Davis.
Frances was apparently home with her parents for the 1830 and 1840 census.
She married Leander Pyatte before 1848 in Yancey Co, NC.
Other researchers show Leander Pyatte to be a child of Joseph Pyatte Jr (1790-1864) and Jean Brooks. Joseph is a son of Joseph Sr (1755-1838) and Sarah Jane Still. "Pyatte" is often spelled "Pyatt", "Piett", etc in records.
Regarding the Pyatte family, I found none listed in Burke County, NC on the 1790 census, unless badly misspelled.
In 1800 Burke, Joseph Piett or Puett (1755) was listed.
In 1810 Burke, Joseph Pyett was listed, as were several named "Puitt".
In 1820 Burke, several were listed, including Joseph "Piett" and Joseph Jr. These two, and the others, all seem to be in the area of Burke that later became McDowell County.
In 1830 Burke, Joseph Pyett Jr was listed in the Three Mile Creek area near the Carpenter family. He had two sons under 5, born ca 1825/30, one of which must be son Leander Pyatte (c1826).
In 1833, Yancey County was formed from Burke, including where the Carpenter family resided, and some of the Pyattes. Most of the Pyatte family was in the section that remained Burke, until later becoming McDowell County.
In 1840 Yancey, Joseph Pyatte (Jr) was the only one listed, and he was just a few houses from Jacob Carpenter. Joseph had one son age 10-14, born ca 1825/30 which must be son Leander (c1826).
Leander Pyatte married Frances Matilda Carpenter before 1848 in Yancey County.
"Frances M. Pyatte" was named in the Will of her father Jacob Carpenter in 1849.
Leander and Frances were listed next to her parents on the 1850 census in Yancey Co, NC. Leander's parents were just two pages away.

Leander Pyatte was killed during the Civil War on 10 Feb 1863. His death was mentioned by his nephew Jacob Carpenter (1833) in his "Anthology of Death":
"Lander Pyatte age 40 dide Feb 10 1863. Wars fine man. Dide in ware."
I don't yet have Frances' listing for the 1870 census.
On 15 Apr 1877, Frances Carpenter Pyatte married William Vance in Mitchell Co, NC. William was a son of John Vance and Elizabeth Davis. Their marriage record gave them as "William Vance", parents left blank, and "Matilda Pyatt", parents blank, married by L. D. Vance, JP. (Toe Valley Genealogical Society Newsletter, Volume 3, Number 4, June 1991, "Mitchell County Marriage Records 1865-1889" extracted by Rhonda Gunter)
I don't have the 1880 or 1900 census listings for them yet.
Frances died on 28 Jun 1902 in Mitchell Co, NC.
Unknown Daughter was born ca 1825/30. An apparent child this age was with Jacob Carpenter on the 1830 census, but gone by 1840. She either died or married by then. She was not named in Jacob's Will of 1849, so probably dead before then.
