I (Marty Grant) am a 5th Great Grand nephew of David Carpenter.
David Carpenter was born 30 Dec 1793 in Wilkes County, NC (now Ashe County, NC). David is a son of Mathias and Elizabeth Miller Carpenter.
David was apparently home with his parents for the 1800 and 1810 census in Ashe County.
For the War of 1812, David enlisted in Captain Gideon Lewis' Company from Ashe County. He has a Pension File (# SC-25707) with his service record, and other information.
David Carpenter was listed on the 1815 Ashe County Tax list, in Captain Sutherland's District. He was listed with 1 poll (himself), but no land. His brother and brothers-in-law were listed near him (Jacob Carpenter, Jonathan Miller and Joseph Roten), and his father Mathias was in the same district, but not listed near him.
Around this time (ca 1815-1817), David married Catherine May in Ashe County. I'm not sure what the proof of her maiden name is. Perhaps it is in his Pension file (which I haven't seen yet). I have her father listed as Jacob May, but don't know the proof of that either.
In regard to the May family, there was a Jacob May listed in 1790 Wilkes County, in the region that later became Ashe County.
The 1800 Ashe County census shows three Jacob's and one David and one William May. One of the Jacob's was listed as "Jr", the other two without a suffix. They all three had daughters under 10 (born 1790/1800), so I don't know which of these was Catherine's father. "Jr" and one of the Jacob's were born ca 1755/74, the other Jacob was born before 1755.
In 1810 Ashe County, there was a "J. May" with two girls 16-24 (born 1784/94). The only other May household was "W. May", so this must be Catherine's father Jacob by default, assuming the other Jacob's moved away, or died.
Back to the Carpenter family.
David Carpenter was listed on the 1820 census in Ashe County. He was in a section that was alphabetical, so we can't tell who his neighbors were.

In the 1830's, David's nephew David Carpenter (son of Jacob) moved to Rich Hill Creek in Ashe County, and therefore I'm not totally sure which records for "David Carpenter" in the 1830's are for David Sr and which are for David Jr.
On 21 Sep 1832 David Jr's father Jacob Carpenter "of Burke" sold "my son" David Carpenter "of Ashe" 100 acres on the Left Fork of Rich Hill Creek, land that Jacob entered in 1800. This shows that David Jr had already moved there before his father sold him the land. (Ashe Co, NC Deed Book M page 318).
In 1832 one of the two David Carpenters received a 50 acre land grant on Rich Hill Creek. I don't know which David this was, as both lived in the same area. (Ashe Co, NC Deed Book M page 320).
Also in 1832, one of the David's received a 10 acre grant on Rich Hill Creek, again I don't know which David this was. (Ashe Co, NC Deed Book M page 321).
When David (Sr)'s parents died in 1835, their children divided the land up among themselves in a series of deeds. David was named in all of these deeds (all dated 21 Oct 1835), including two of them were David received land, one for 100 acres on Buffalo Creek, and another for 5 acres. (Ashe Co, NC Deed Book G page 165)
On 17 Nov 1835, David Carpenter sold "lands on Buffalo Creek" to William Weaver. I'm fairly sure this is David Sr. (Ashe Co, NC Deed Book M page 411).
In 1836, one of the David Carpenters sold "lands on Rich Hill Creek" to William R. Ashley. Since both David Sr and David Jr left Ashe about this time, which one was this? The elder David moved to Monroe Co, IN around then, and the younger David moved back near his father in Yancey Co, NC around this time. (Ashe Co, NC Deed Book M page 418).
It will be necessary to closely examine the deed records for "David Carpenter" in Ashe County in order to figure which record applies to which David.
David Carpenter (Sr) moved to Monroe Co, IN in the late 1830's, apparently with a big wave of settlers from Western NC.
I have not (as of yet) done any research on the family in Indiana.
David Carpenter was listed on the 1840 census in Monroe Co, Indiana. I don't have the enumerations yet.
David Carpenter and family were listed on the 1850 census in Monroe Co, Indiana.

I have not researched this family beyond this point, but other researchers have shared data with me, showing that Catherine May Carpenter died on 24 Sep 1862 in Harrison Co, Indiana, while David died on 31 Oct 1890 in Greene Co, Indiana.
David and Catherine had ten children, per the information shared with me by other researchers. I have not followed up on any of these children so far. When I do, I'll add the results of my research here.
