I (Marty Grant) am a 4th Great Grandson of David Carpenter and his first wife.

David Carpenter was born ca 1805/06 in old Burke Co, NC in or near the Three Mile Creek vicinity (This area became Yancey County in 1833, Mitchell County in 1861, and finally Avery county in 1911.)

David Carpenter is a proven son of Jacob and Margaret Carpenter. He was named as a son in Jacob's Will of 1849 and in a deed from Jacob to son David in 1832. He was most likely named for his Uncle David Carpenter, Jacob's brother.

David Carpenter was apparently home with his parents for the 1810 and 1820 census in Burke Co, NC.

David Carpenter married someone ca 1829 in old Burke Co, NC. So far, I have not found any record of her given name, nor any clues to her maiden name. Whoever she was, she was born ca 1810/15 per the 1830 census record. However, David's age was slightly wrong on this census (also listed ca 1810/15), so it is possible hers was off as well.

David and his new wife were listed on the 1830 census in Burke Co, NC. His neighbors included many who were known to live in the same section of old Burke County (Three Mile Creek and surrounding communities). His neighbor on one side was his 1st cousin Jacob Davis. and a few households away was Thomas Grant (my ancestor, but not related to the Carpenter family at that time), and David's father Jacob Carpenter was listed on the next page. Many other familiar names were listed near David, names well known among the Carpenter and Davis family researchers.

Wherever David was in early 1830, apparently it was in the small section of Yancey that later became part of Watauga County in 1849, for David's son William (born November 1830) claimed (in 1860 census) that he was born in Watauga County. Either that is where the family was in 1830 (for the census), or they moved to that region before November of the same year. It does appear that David moved his family around quite a bit.

David Carpenter and family moved up (just one county north) to Ashe County before 1832 and lived near his grandfather Mathias Carpenter for a time. There may be some confusion in the deed records, as David's Uncle David Carpenter was still in Ashe at that time, so some of the records in Ashe for "David Carpenter" may be for the elder David.

On 21 Sep 1832 David's father Jacob Carpenter "of Burke" sold "my son" David Carpenter "of Ashe" 100 acres on the Left Fork of Rich Hill Creek, land that Jacob entered in 1800. This shows that David had already moved there before his father sold him the land. (Ashe Co, NC Deed Book M page 318).

In 1832 one of the two David Carpenters received a 50 acre land grant on Rich Hill Creek. I don't know which David this was, as both lived in the same area. (Ashe Co, NC Deed Book M page 320).

Also in 1832, one of the David's received a 10 acre grant on Rich Hill Creek, again I don't know which David this was. (Ashe Co, NC Deed Book M page 321).

In 1836, one of the David Carpenters sold "lands on Rich Hill Creek" to William R. Ashley. Since both David Sr and David Jr left Ashe about this time, which one was this? The elder David moved to Monroe Co, IN around then, and the younger David moved back near his father in Yancey Co, NC around this time. (Ashe Co, NC Deed Book M page 418).

It will be necessary to closely examine the deed records for "David Carpenter" in Ashe County in order to figure which record applies to which David.

David Carpenter (son of Jacob) moved back near his parents before 1840. His 3rd child (Levi) was born ca 1836/37 in "Ashe" and his next child (Thomas) was born ca 1838/39 in "Yancey" so he must have moved back between ca 1837 and 1839.

In 1833, (after David had moved to Ashe), the area he had lived in Burke County was cut off to form the new County of Yancey. When he came back, even if to the same neighborhood, he was now in Yancey Co, NC.

David's wife (name unknown) apparently died ca 1839 in Yancey Co, NC. It is possible that she died in childbirth with their youngest child Thomas D. Carpenter, born ca 1838/39.

David Carpenter, and his four children were listed on the 1840 census in Yancey Co, NC. No apparent wife was listed, so apparently Mrs. Carpenter had died before 1840, and he had not yet married his second wife. David's neighbors in 1840 show that he lived in that section of Yancey that was soon to be cut off (in 1849) to form the new County of Watauga.  His father was listed on the next page, so even though county lines would soon separate them, they were not too far from each other.

David Carpenter was listed on the 1840 tax list in Yancey County in Captain Vance's Company. He was taxed for 300 acres, valued at $125, and he had one white poll (himself), and his tax was $2.12 1/2.  (Toe Valley Genealogical Society Newsletter, Volume 5, Number 8,  October 1993, 1840 Yancey County Tax List, Capt Vance's Company by Kathy Sullivan)

I don't know when or how, David obtained the 300 acres he had as of 1840. If he acquired it via deed or grant, while the area was still in Burke County, then those records are lost (most early Burke County records were destroyed during the Civil War).

It was around this same time (ca 1840), that David must have decided he couldn't properly care for his youngest child Thomas, so he gave him over to his parents, the child's grandparents, Jacob and Margaret Carpenter to raise. Thomas remained with his grandparents until the late 1850's when he joined his siblings in Cherokee (later Graham) Co, NC.

Sometime late in 1840, or early in 1841, David Carpenter married Mira Gregg in Yancey Co, NC. According to the research of Sandy Bourassa, Mira was a child of James Gregg and Nancy Humphries. Her maiden name is given as "Gregg" on two of the death certificates of one her children (Martha and Caroline), but as "Graves" on another (David). However, "Gregg" seems to be correct.

Taking a step back to look at the Gregg family, I found that in 1790, there was only one Greg in all of NC, and he was "Wm Greg" in Burke Co, NC.

In 1800, there were none in Burke County.

In 1810, in Burke, there was "James Gragg" (1765/84) with no additional family. Several pages away was "Will Gragg" (bef 1765) and a few houses from him was "William Gragg" (1765/84).

In 1820, there were three Greggs all close together on the same page: William (1775/94), James (1775/94) and John Gragg Esq (1775/94), and on the next page was Obediah (1794/1804). Several pages away was William Gragg Sr (bef 1775). Mira's apparent father James was listed just four houses from a James Humphries (1775/94), possibly a brother of his wife Nancy.

In 1830, there were several "Gragg" listings in Burke County, including James Gragg, who was age 40-49 (born ca 1780/90). He was clearly in the part of Burke that later became Caldwell County. He had two daughters age 5-9, born ca 1820/25, which could include Mira (c1821/22). This means that they did not live anywhere too close to the Carpenter family.

In 1833, Yancey County was formed, taking the area where the Carpenter family lived. However, the Gregg family lived in the section that was still Burke County for a few more years.

The 1840 census shows James Gragg in Burke County, still clearly in the region that would very shortly become Caldwell County. He had two girls still born ca 1820/25, this time in the 15-19 age group. This still would include daughter Mira (1821/22).

Since the Gregg family lived in the region that became Caldwell (formed in 1842), that makes me wonder how Mira Gregg and David Carpenter would have met, but somehow they did, and married in late 1840. (The 1850 census shows James Gragg and wife Nancy in Caldwell County, NC with several children still at home).

Back to the Carpenter family.

David Carpenter was listed on the 1841 tax list in Yancey County in Captain Swan's Company. He was taxed for 200 acres (100 less than in 1840), valued at $100, and he had one white poll (himself). (Toe Valley Genealogical Society Newsletter, Volume 5, Number 9,  November 1993, 1841 Yancey County Tax List, Capt Swan's Company by Kathy Sullivan)

In the Spring 1848 term of Yancey County Court, the Valuations of Yancey County lands were all reduced  by 33 1/3 cent per acre. David Carpenter was listed in North Toe River District with his land of $100 reduced to $66 2/3. (Toe Valley Genealogical Society Newsletter, Volume 2, Number 6,  August 1990, "Yancey County Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions Minutes to Spring Term 1848" extracted by Rhonda Gunter)

In 1849, the section of Yancey where David and family were residing, was cut off to form the new County of Watauga. (This same section of Watauga was cut off in 1861 to form Mitchell County, and in 1911 was part of the new Avery County).

David and family were listed on the 1850 census in Watauga Co, NC.

During the 1850's, David and family either moved a short distance back into Yancey County, or else they were near the border and listed in the wrong county. In either case, they were listed in Yancey Co, NC for the 1860 census very near all the other Carpenters that were there then. He was just seven houses from his widowed mother and in similar proximity to most of his siblings.

I don't know if had anything to do with the Civil War, or if it was just a desire to be near his family, but in the early 1860's, David and family left the Three Mile Creek area and moved to the Cheoah area of Cherokee (now Graham) Co, NC. All four of his sons from his first marriage were there before 1860, so it seems natural for David to join them. When they moved there, they left a few of their older children (from second marriage) behind in Yancey County, either that, or they chose to go back on their own when old enough.

David Carpenter and family were listed on the 1870 census in Cherokee Co, NC, in Cheoah Township, just two houses from his oldest son William Carpenter. William owned a lot of property, so it seems reasonable to assume that David was residing on his sons land, since he had none of his own there.

In 1872, Cheoah Township, and others were cut off from Cherokee County to form the new Graham County.

David Carpenter died sometime in the 1870's in Graham Co, NC. I have not found a grave for him. He may have been buried on the William Carpenter lands somewhere, or perhaps in an unmarked grave at any number of cemeteries.

For the 1880 census, Widow Mira Gregg Carpenter was listed in Graham Co, NC census, as head of household, with one daughter and two grandchildren with her. Many of her children and step children were close by.

Mira Gregg Carpenter died sometime between 1880 and 1900 in Graham Co, NC. I don't know when it was precisely. I have not found a grave for her, though presumably she is buried with her husband, wherever that might be.

There are probably many records for David Carpenter waiting to be located in various counties (Burke, Yancey, Watauga, Ashe, Cherokee and Graham). I will attempt to locate them all eventually.

Children

David Carpenter and his first wife had four sons, two proven, two others highly likely, though not proven explicitly. David and Mira's eleven children are all proven by census records and some are also confirmed by death records.

William Carpenter (1830-1885)

Wilson Carpenter (c1834-aft 1882)

Levi Carpenter (c1837-aft 1893)

Thomas D. Carpenter (c1839-1862)

James A. Carpenter (c1841)

Sarah Carpenter (c1843-aft 1850)

Ervin Carpenter (c1844-aft 1860)

Jonathan G. Carpenter (c1846-aft 1860)

Mary Jane Carpenter (c1848-1880/1900)

Dolly Maria Carpenter (c1851-aft 1900)

Rachel Matilda Carpenter (1853-1925)

Samuel L. Carpenter (1855-1915)

David L. Carpenter (1858-1925)

Frances Caroline Carpenter (1860-1927)

Martha J. Carpenter (1864-1925)

William Carpenter was born 8 Nov 1830 in old Burke (later Yancey, later Watauga, later Mitchell, now Avery) Co, NC.

I have not found any direct proof that William is a son of David Carpenter, but I'm positive that he is. David had a son this age with him for the 1840 census, and David and most of his children followed William to Cherokee (now Graham) Co, NC. In 1870, David seemed to be living on William's land.

William was most likely named after his Uncle William Carpenter, brother to David.

William moved to Cherokee (now Graham) Co, NC before 1850, and married Margaret Ann Davis there in 1855. See his own page for additional information.

Wilson Carpenter was born ca 1833/34 in Ashe Co, NC, probably on or near Rich Hill Creek. Wilson was apparently with his father in Yancey Co, NC for the 1840 census. He was with his father in 1850 in Watauga Co, NC.

I don't know who Wilson was named after. There were many people with the surname "Wilson" who were neighbors of the David Carpenter family, so it is possible that this was the maiden name of David's first wife, though that is just speculation on my part.

In the 1850's Wilson joined his brother William in Cherokee (now Graham) Co, NC, where he married Elizabeth Ammons ca 1858. See his own page for additional information.

Levi Carpenter was born ca 1836/37 in Ashe Co, NC, probably on or near Rich Hill Creek. Levi was apparently with his father in Yancey Co, NC for the 1840 census. He was with his father in 1850 in Watauga Co, NC.

Levi was most likely named for his Uncle Levi Carpenter, brother of David.

In the 1850's Levi joined his brother William in Cherokee (now Graham) Co, NC. See his own page for additional information.

Thomas D. Carpenter was born ca 1838/39 in Yancey (later Watauga, later Mitchell, now Avery) Co, NC. He was apparently with his father for the 1840 census in Yancey Co, NC.

I'm not sure who Thomas was named after. The name "Thomas" was not used in the Carpenter family, at least not prior to this one. He may have been named for someone is his mother's family. The "D" middle initial might be a clue to his mother's maiden name, (Davis, Dillinger, etc) or not.

Thomas' mother died, either in childbirth with him, or shortly afterward. Thomas was sent to be raised by his grandparents, Jacob and Margaret Carpenter.

Jacob Carpenter made his Will on 8 Sep 1849 in Yancey Co, NC and mentioned his grandson Thomas D. Carpenter, stating:

"Item the third. I give and bequeath to THOMAS D. CARPENTER, my grandson if he stay with me until he is eighteen years of age one horse worth forty dollars, one cow and on good bed and clothing."

Thomas was still with his grandparents for the 1850 census, in Yancey Co, NC.

Jacob Carpenter died in 1856, and Thomas was only about 16 then. so he may have remained with his grandmother until ca 1858 when he turned 18 in order to receive the inheritance. In any event, he left Yancey and joined his older brothers in Cherokee (now Graham) Co, NC before 1860.

For the 1860 census, Thomas was living with his older brother William in Cherokee Co, NC.

Though Thomas was the youngest of his full siblings, he was the first to enlist for the Civil War. On 1 Jun 1861, Thomas D. Carpenter enlisted in Company D, 25th Regiment of North Carolina troops as a Private. He was age 21, a resident of Cherokee Co, NC and listed his birth place as "Blount Co, TN" (which isn't correct, or is it? The 1860 census gave "Yancy" Co, NC as his birth place). After almost a year in the service, he died of Fever at Grahamville, SC on or about 3 Mar 1862.

His death must have motivated his older brothers, as just a few months later, both William and Wilson enlisted for the War. I don't have a record for Levi, so I don't know if he served or not.

James A. Carpenter was born ca 1840/41 in Yancey (later Mitchell, now Avery) Co, NC. James was probably named after his grandfather James Gregg (or Gragg).

James was with his parents for the 1850 and 1860 census. In 1860 he was listed as "James A. Carpenter".

For the Civil War, James A. Carpenter enlisted in Company A., 58th Regiment along with many of his 1st cousins in Mitchell Co., NC in 1862. He was dead by 14 Jul 1863 for on that date he was on a register of deceased claimants and $83.43 was paid to "D. Carpenter" listed as "fa" (presumably for "Father"). (Thanks to Sandy Bourassa for finding and sharing the Civil War Records.)

It was previously thought that James A. Carpenter, son of David, was the same person as James Pinkney Carpenter who married in 1868 in Mitchell County, despite the different middle names/initials. However, the Civil War records now prove that James Pinkney Carpenter is someone else entirely.

Sarah Carpenter was born ca 1842/43 in Yancey (later Mitchell, now Avery) Co, NC. Sarah was with her parents in 1850 Watauga Co, NC, but gone from their household by 1860. At that time she would have been 17, so she could have been married already, or perhaps she had died prior to 1860.

Ervin Carpenter was born ca 1843/44 in Yancey (later Mitchell, now Avery) Co, NC. Ervin was home with his parents for the 1850 and 1860 census.

He apparently did not go with them to Cherokee (now Graham) Co, NC in the 1860's, but remained behind in the Mitchell Co, NC area.

I did not find Ervin listed on the 1870 census.

There was an "Irvin" Carpenter listed in Mitchell Co, NC in 1880, single, as a border in another household.  I'm not sure if this was him or not, but it could be his first cousin Erwin Carpenter, son of Samuel Carpenter. I feel that this must be Ervin, and not Erwin, though the names are hard to distinguish in the old handwriting.

According to Audrey Carpenter Franklin, a descendant of Ervin, he married at some point, and had a daughter named Betty Jane Carpenter, no birth date. Betty had a child by 1898, so I'd imagine that Ervin married very shortly after 1880. More research is needed, and I have not done any additional research on Ervin yet.

Jonathan G. Carpenter was born ca 1845/46 in Yancey (later Mitchell, now Avery) Co, NC. Jonathan was home with his parents for the 1850 and 1860 census.

I found no record of him after 1860. He may have died during the Civil War, or else just moved away. He had a first cousin, Jonathan N. Carpenter, son of Samuel Carpenter, who remained in Mitchell Co, NC. They were about the same age.

Mary Jane Carpenter was born ca 1847/48 in Yancey (later Mitchell, now Avery) Co, NC. Mary was home with her parents in 1850 and 1860 census.

Mary moved to Cherokee (now Graham) Co, NC with her parents in the 1860's.

On 15 May 1870, Mary Carpenter married David J. Farr in Cherokee (now Graham) Co, NC. David was a son of Bazil Farr and Elizabeth Schaffer who married in 1847 in Blount Co, TN.

David and Mary were listed on the 1870 census in Cherokee Co, NC near many of her relatives. A "Walkie Farr" age 10 was with them, this might be a younger brother of David's, or perhaps a nephew of his.

Like many other Graham County families, the Farrs moved to Osborne Co, Kansas after 1880. Mary died there sometime between 1880 and 1900. (Thanks to Evelyn Tharp for finding this information).

David J. Farr and children came back to Graham County after the death of Mary, and some of the children were back before 1900, though David didn't return until between 1900 and 1903..

Evelyn Tharp's research shows that David was in Osborne Co, KS for the 1900 census. He returned to Graham Co, NC before 1903.

He married again on 26 Apr 1903 to Frankie Emaline Bradley in Graham Co, NC.

David died 19 Jan 1929 in Graham Co, NC. His second wife Frankie died 15 Nov 1931 in Graham Co, NC. I'm not sure where they are buried.

Dolly Maria Carpenter was born ca 1850/51 ("1852" per 1900 census) in Yancey (later Mitchell, now Avery) Co, NC. Dolly was with her parents for the 1860 and 1870 census. "Dolly" was listed in some census records as "Donna" and "Donie" as well as "Dolly M." and "Maria". "Dolly Maria" seems to be her name, though it could actually be "Donna Maria" instead.

Dolly never married, but apparently had five children out of wedlock.

For the 1880 census, Dolly (listed as "Dona Bull") was with her widowed mother in Graham Co, NC. She was listed as Mira's daughter, so we know it the same person, in spite of the difference in her name. Though her surname was listed as "Bull", her marital status was left blank. At a glance she would seem to be a widow, but I don't think she was ever married. The name "Bull" does not turn up elsewhere in Graham County at that time, so I don't know where that came from. In 1880, Dolly and her children, and her mother were two houses from her sister Martha Willix, and just a few from sister Caroline Phillips.

By 1900, Dolly's two "Bull" children had died, and she had two more children, these listed with the "Carpenter" surname. The 1900 census records shows her as widowed, having 5 children born to her, but only 2 still living. This means, besides the two Bull children, and the two Carpenter children (with her in 1900), she had one other child who had died before 1900. In 1900, she was just two houses from her brother Samuel Carpenter.

I did not find Dolly, nor any of her children in Graham County in 1910. Her daughter Annie married in Graham in 1915, so she must have been somewhere around in 1910, but I didn't find her. So either Dolly died after 1900, or she moved out of Graham County, or she married someone yet unknown.

Rachel Matilda Carpenter was born ca 1852/53 ("March 1848" per 1900 census) in Yancey (later Mitchell, now Avery) Co, NC. Rachel was with her parents for the 1860 and 1870 census. In those she was listed as age 7 in 1860 (born ca 1852/53), and 17 in 1870 (ca 1852/53), so these two records agree. The 1900 census shows her birth date as March 1848, and her age as 52, which does not work with other records.

I have not been able to locate Rachel on the 1880 census.

Thanks to Sandra Bourassa for data shared on this family.

Rachel had at least two children, born out of wedlock (like sister Dolly). These were born in 1875 and 1882. I don't know who their father was.

Rachel married Oliver Merritt Hamlett on 20 Jun 1887 in Buncombe Co, NC. I don't know why Rachel was in Buncombe, since none of her known family was residing there, but that is where Oliver Hamlett was from.

Oliver and Rachel were on the 1900 census in Buncombe County in Fairview Township. This census showed that Rachel had 6 children born to her, but only 5 still living. I don't know if the child who died was one of her Hamlett children, or one born before marriage.

Oliver and Rachel were still in Buncombe for the 1910 census. They were in Leicester Township. This time she reported only 4 children born, and 3 still living.

Oliver M. Hamlett died in Buncombe on 2 Dec 1915.

Rachel Matilda came back to Graham and Cherokee Co, NC after that. On 5 May 1918 she married Isaac B. Rogers in Cherokee Co, NC. Isaac's first wife (Martha Phillips) was a sister to John William Phillips who married Rachel's sister Frances Caroline Carpenter. Isaac is a cousin of mine through another line, he is a son of Barney Rogers and Elizabeth Winfrey.

I don't yet have them on the 1920 census, but I suspect they were in Cherokee County, in Valleytown Township.

Rachel Matilda died on 2 Oct 1925 in Cherokee Co, NC. I don't know where she is buried.

Samuel L. Carpenter was born 1 Oct 1855 in Yancey (later Mitchell, now Avery) Co, NC. He was with his parents for the 1860 and 1870 census. Samuel was probably named for his Uncle Samuel Carpenter. I don't yet know what the "L" middle initial was for.

Samuel married Jane Sherrill in 1878. See his own page for additional information.

David L. Carpenter was born April 1858 in Yancey (later Mitchell, now Avery) Co, NC. David was home with his parents for the 1860 and 1870 census. He was named after his father. I don't know what the "L" middle initial was for.

David married first to Elizabeth Braswell ca 1880, and second to Alice Brown in 1897. See his own page for additional information.

Frances Caroline Carpenter was born 4 Jun 1860 in Yancey (later Mitchell, now Avery) Co, NC. She was not listed with her parents in 1860 (not born yet), but was with them in 1870.

I'm not sure which name she went by, as records list her several ways, "Caroline", "Frankie", "Frankie C.". Her tombstone shows "Caroline", so perhaps that was how she was best known.

Caroline married John William Phillips on 20 Mar 1877 in Graham Co, NC. Most records showed him as "William". Their marriage record shows them as "John W. Phillips" age 21 and "Caroline Carpenter" age 16, married by Michael Ghormley, Minister, at home of (illegible) Carpenter. (I can't make out what the first name says!). William was a son of Archibald Phillips and Malinda Ammons.

They were listed on the 1880 census in Graham County just a few houses from her widowed mother, and near several other siblings.

I don't yet have them on the 1920 census, though they were probably still in Graham County. It is possible that they were in Cherokee instead, as that is where they both died.

William died in Cherokee Co, NC on 15 Feb 1927.

Caroline died in Cherokee Co, NC on 15 Dec 1927. Both are buried at the Old Mother Cemetery (Cheoah Church) in Robbinsville, Graham County. His stone says "J. W. Phillips Dec 4 1853 - Feb 15 1927", and hers "Caroline Phillips Jun 4 1860 - Dec 15 1927". Caroline's death record shows her parents as "David Carpenter" and "Myra Gregg".

Martha J. Carpenter was born 10 Jun 1864 in Yancey (later Mitchell, now Avery) Co, NC, or in Cherokee (now Graham) Co, NC. I'm not sure which County she was born in, as her parents left Mitchell in the 1860's for Cherokee, but I don't know precisely when they made the move. Martha was home with her parents for the 1870 census.

Martha married William P. Willix (also spelled "Willocks") on 11 Jan 1879 in Graham Co, NC. Their marriage record shows "William Wilox" age 18 and "Mirah Carpenter" age 18. Her name is given wrong, but it must be her. They were married by R. M. Roberts, MG at Cheoah, NC. William was a son of Andrew J. Willix and Mirah M. ---.

William and Martha were listed on the 1880 census in Graham Co, NC just two houses from her widowed mother.

William Willix died there on 15 Oct 1914. He is buried at the Red Marble Cemetery (Red Marble Baptist Church) near Topton.

I don't have the 1920 census records yet, but Martha was probably still in that area.

Martha died in Cherokee on 28 Aug 1925. She is also buried at Red Marble, next to her husband. I've been to their graves several times.

Martha's death certificate listed her as a child of "Dave Carpenter" and "M. Gregg".
