I (Marty Grant) am a 3rd Great Grand nephew of Wilson Carpenter.
Wilson Carpenter was born ca 1833/34 in Ashe Co, NC, probably in the Rich Hill Creek area. He is a son of David Carpenter and his first wife.
I don't know who Wilson was named for. It is possible that his mother's maiden name was "Wilson" and he was named for her, or possibly he was named after someone in her family. There were several Wilsons near the David Carpenter family in old Burke County. David's brother William Carpenter was married to a Wilson, so perhaps David was also.
Wilson Carpenter was apparently with his widowed father for the 1840 census in Yancey Co, NC. He was home with his father and step-mother in 1850 Watauga County, NC.
In the 1850's, probably after he turned 21, ca 1854/55, Wilson joined his older brother William Carpenter in the Tulula Creek area of Cherokee (now Graham) Co, NC.
Wilson Carpenter married Elizabeth Ammons there ca 1859. No marriage record has been located, but since they only one child, a few months old in 1860, I suspect they were married close to that year. I believe that Elizabeth is a daughter of Thomas Ammons and Elizabeth Peek. Thomas did have a daughter by that name with him in 1850, and in 1860 he was living with Wilson and Elizabeth.
Wilson and wife were listed on the 1860 census in Cherokee Co, NC. Elizabeth's widower father, Thomas Ammons, was residing with them. This census taker listed the full county of birth for everyone (bless his heart!).

For the Civil War, Wilson and his brother William enlisted together on 23 Jul 1862 in Company H, 69th North Carolina Regiment. This was just a few months after their brother Thomas Carpenter had died in the Confederate Service. That may have prompted them to join. I don't have a full record of his service yet.
Wilson and family were listed on the 1870 census in Cherokee County, NC.

On 21 Sep 1882, Wilson Carpenter witnessed the marriage of his niece (and my ancestor) Elvira Carpenter to Thomas J. George in Graham County. This is the last record I've found (so far) for Wilson Carpenter.
Wilson died sometime between 21 Sep 1882 and 1900. I can't narrow it down any better than that yet. I don't know where he was buried.
Wilson's widow, Elizabeth, was listed as head of household on the 1900 census in Graham County.

Elizabeth apparently died between 1900 and 1910, for I didn't find her on the 1910 census. I don't know where she is buried, but presumably next to Wilson Carpenter.
Wilson Carpenter and Elizabeth Ammons had nine children, only eight of which are identified. The 1900 census record showed that Elizabeth had given birth to 9 children, but only 8 were still living. The 1860 through 1900 census records prove 8 children, so presumably one other child was born who died young, or else is just currently unidentified.
Sarah Corintha Carpenter(c1860)
Mary Alcedona Carpenter (1864-1925)
William A. Carpenter (1872-1911)
Sarah Corintha Carpenter was born ca 1859/60 in Cherokee (now Graham) Co, NC.
Sarah was home with her parents in the 1860 census, listed as "Sarah", age a few months. In 1870 she was with her parents in Cherokee, as "Corintha" age 10. I'm not 100% sure that Sarah and Corintha are one and the same, but the age matches, and "Sarah" was not there in 1870. If Corintha was a different child, then that means that Sarah died young, before 1870.
Sarah (or Corintha) was not found on the 1880 census, so she had married, or died, during the 1870's. I did not find a marriage record for her in Cherokee or Graham County during that time period.
Martha Ann Carpenter was born April 1862 in Cherokee (now Graham) Co, NC.
Martha was with her parents for the 1870 and 1880 census.
Martha Carpenter married Bazel B. Anderson on 25 Mar 1882 in Graham County. Their marriage record gave them as "J. B. Anderson" age 20 and "M. A. Carpenter" age 19, married by J. E. Morgan, Minister, at home of Wilson Carpenter (her father). Bazel was a son of Perry and Nancy Farr Anderson.
Bazel and Martha were listed on the 1900 census in Graham County, listed between her Aunt Caroline Phillips and her Uncle Samuel Carpenter, not far from her widowed mother.

Bazel Anderson died 9 Apr 1937 in Graham County. His death record gives his parents as "Perry Anderson" and "Nancy Farr". (Graham County death Records Book 6 page 9).
I don't know when Martha Carpenter Anderson died, nor where she and her husband were buried.
Mary Alcedona Carpenter was born 23 Dec 1864 in Cherokee (now Graham) Co, NC.
Alcedona was home with her parents for the 1870 and 1880 census.
Alcedona married Michael Pate Sherrill on 3 Mar 1886 in Graham County. He was a son of Michael Simpson Sherrill and Frances Malinda Davis. Their marriage record showed "M. P. Sherrill" age 19, and "Alcedona Carpenter" age 19, married by N. G. Phillips, JP, at home of "R. Rogers" (probably Reuben Rogers, who's wife was Mary E. Ammons, possibly a close relative to Alcedona's mother).
Pate and Alcedona were listed on the 1900 census in Graham County, next to his parents and just a few houses from her widowed mother.

Alcedona Carpenter Sherrill died in Graham County on 9 Aug 1925. Her death record lists her parents as "Wilson Carpenter" and "Elizabeth Ammons". She is buried at the Campbell - Sherrill Cemetery. Her marker says "Alcadonia Carpenter Sherrill, wife of M. P. Sherrill Dec 23, 1864 - Aug 9, 1925".
Pate Sherrill died on 24 Oct 1944 in Graham County. He is buried next to his wife at the Campbell - Sherrill Cemetery. His marker says "M. P. Sherrill May 6, 1865 - Oct 24, 1944".
Laura Carpenter was born ca 1866/67 in Cherokee (now Graham) Co, NC. She was with her parents for the 1870 census, listed as "Lorena", in 1880 as "Laura". Other records list her as "Lou".
On 1 Dec 1895, Lou Carpenter married Ute Sherrill (brother of Michael Pate Sherrill who married Lou's sister Alcedona). Their marriage record shows "Ute Sherrill" age 35 and "Laurana Carpenter" age 27, married by W. A. McLean, Minister, at home of Laurana Carpenter.
Ute Sherrill had previously been married to Mary C. Harrison who died in 1893. Mary was a daughter of William Harrison and Laura George (my Aunt).
Ute and Lou were listed on the 1900 census in Graham County next to his parents, and just a few houses from her widowed mother.

Lou Carpenter Sherrill died on 9 Jul 1923 in Graham Co, NC. She is buried at the Campbell - Sherrill Cemetery. Her marker says ""Lou Sherrill Aug 27, 1870 - Jul 9, 1923". This birth date disagrees with all other records.
Ute Sherrill died on 3 Feb 1925, and is also buried at the Campbell - Sherrill Cemetery. His marker says "Ute Sherrill Mar 24, 1861 - Feb 3, 1925".
Thomas W. Carpenter was born ca 1868/69 in Cherokee (now Graham) Co, NC. Thomas was home with his parents for the 1870 and 1880 census.
Thomas may have married someone named Lou Sherrill before 1888, as they had a child together named Sarah Jane Carpenter, born in 1888. Her death certificate (1965) shows her parents as "Thomas Carpenter" and "Lou Sherrill". I haven't figured out who Lou Sherrill was. This could be a mistake, as death certificates are notoriously inaccurate. I have not found a marriage record for Thomas and Lou.
If Thomas had married Lou before 1888, she died prior to 1892, for he married Tinie Willix (listed as "Walker" in marriage record) in Graham County on 28 Aug 1892. Their marriage record gave them as "Thomas W. Carpenter" age 22 and "Tinie Walker" age 20, married by R. Rogers, JP. Tinie was a child of Andrew J. Willix and Mirah M. ---.
I did not find Thomas and family on the 1900 census. His daughter Sarah, however, was residing with her grandmother, the widow Elizabeth Ammons Carpenter in Graham County. Willix researchers show that Thomas and Tinie went to neighboring Monroe Co, TN.
In 1910, Sarah was residing with her Great Uncle Samuel L. Carpenter in Graham County. She married in 1913.
I have no additional data on Thomas W. Carpenter family. I didn't find him in 1910, at least not in Graham County. He was probably in Monroe Co, TN then.
William A. Carpenter was born March 1872 in Graham Co, NC. William was home with his parents for the 1880 census, and with his widowed mother in 1900.
William married Laura Anderson on 4 Jul 1901 in Graham County. Their marriage record showed "William Carpenter" age 25, and "Laura Anderson" age 18, married by W. C. Morgan, Minister, at Morgan's home. Laura was a child of Harriet Anderson, who was a daughter of Perry Anderson and Nancy Farr.
William and family were listed on the 1910 census in Graham County.

William Carpenter died in 1911, in Graham County. I don't have the exact date. He is buried at Old Mother Cemetery (Cheoah Church), and his marker says "William Carpenter 1876-1911". That birth year is wrong.
I don't have the 1920 census listings yet.
Laura Anderson Carpenter died in 1930 in Graham County. She is buried next to her husband. Her marker says "Laura Carpenter 1886-1930".
Elvira Carpenter was born ca 1875/76 in Graham Co, NC. Elvira was home with her parents for the 1880 census.
I didn't find Elvira in 1900. She either married, or died between 1880 and 1900. I didn't find a marriage record for her.
Julia Carpenter was born 3 Sep 1882 in Graham Co, NC. Julia was home with her widowed mother for the 1900 census.
Julia married William H. Anderson on 29 Mar 1903 in Graham County. Their marriage record showed "William H. Anderson" age 26 and "Julia Carpenter" age 21, married by George W. Colvard, JP. I believe that William H. Anderson is the same person as Harvey Anderson, born July 1879, who was with Perry and Nancy Anderson in 1880, listed as their grandson, and in 1900 he was with Julia Carpenter's family, listed as a servant. I don't know who his parents were.
Julia died very shortly after marriage, on 4 Aug 1904. She is buried at Old Mother Cemetery. Her marker says "Julia Carpenter Anderson Sep 3, 1882 - Aug 4, 1904".
I don't know when William died, nor if he remarried. In 1905, a "W. H. Anderson", the same age, married Jane Painter in Graham County. I believe this was Harvey remarrying.
