I (Marty Grant) am a 3rd Great Grand nephew of Samuel L. Carpenter.

Samuel L. Carpenter was born 1 Oct 1855 in Yancey Co, NC in the area that later became Mitchell County, and is now Avery County. He is a son of David Carpenter and Mira Gregg.

Samuel was probably named for his Uncle Samuel Carpenter, David's brother. I don't yet know what the "L" middle initial was for.

Samuel was with his parents in Yancey Co, NC for the 1860 census. He was still young when they all moved to Cherokee (now Graham) County in the 1860's. He was listed with his parents on the 1870 census in Cherokee County, NC.

Samuel L. Carpenter married Jane Sherrill in Graham County on 30 Jul 1878. Their marriage record showed them as "Samuel L. Carpenter" age 25 and "Jane Sherrill" age 20, married by N. G. Phillips, JP, at Talula Creek. Samuel and Jane were 2nd cousins, 1 time removed. Jane was a daughter of Michael Simpson Sherrill and Frances Malinda Davis.

Samuel and Jane were listed on the 1880 census in Graham County in Cheoah Township.

Samuel and Jane were still in Graham for the 1900 census. They had two nephews with them, sons of Samuel's deceased brother Levi Carpenter.

In 1910, Samuel and Jane were still in Cheoah Township of Graham County. They still had nephew Herbert Carpenter with them, but also a niece named Sarah Carpenter, born ca 1890. I think this is Sarah Jane Carpenter (1888) daughter of Thomas W. Carpenter, a nephew of Samuel's, making Sarah his grand-niece.

Samuel Carpenter died on 3 Apr 1915 in Graham County. He is buried at the Campbell - Sherrill Cemetery in Graham County, east of Robbinsville. His stone says "S. L. Carpenter Oct 1 1855 - Apr 3 1915". His death record shows his birth date as "Jul 15, 1855" which is a few months earlier than his tombstone shows. His death record also shows his birth place as Yancey County (correct), but does not give his mothers' name at all, and gives his father as "William Carpenter" which is wrong. This record has caused some researchers to incorrectly assume that Samuel's dad David was named "David William Carpenter", but that is incorrect. Death certificates can not be used as primary evidence, as they often get the parents names wrong, just as often than they get it correct.

I don't have the 1920 census records yet.

Jane Sherrill Carpenter died in Graham County on 9 Feb 1929. She is buried by her husband at the Campbell - Sherrill Cemetery. Her marker says "Jane Carpenter Jun 22 1856 - Feb 9 1929". I have been to their graves one time. My Great Uncle Boyd Nichols took me there in 1989, I believe.

Children

Samuel and Jane Sherrill Carpenter had no children. The 1900 and 1910 census both show zero children born, and zero living.
