I (Marty Grant) am a 4th Great Grand nephew of Samuel Carpenter.
Samuel Carpenter was born 3 Jan 1814 in Burke Co, NC in the Three Mile Creek area. This later became Yancey County (in 1833) and then later became Mitchell County (in 1861), and finally became Avery County (in 1911). Samuel is a son of Jacob and Margaret Carpenter.
I don't know who Samuel might have been named for, if anyone. Perhaps someone in his mothers family.
Samuel was apparently home with his parents for the 1820 and 1830 census.
On 17 Apr 1835, Isaih Franklin of Yancey County made a deed (apparently a mortgage deed) with Samuel Calloway, Jacob Carpenter, Samuel Franklin and Samuel Carpenter for $16 worth of sundry items, including a horse saddle, bridle and household furniture and farming tools. (Yancey Co, NC Deed Book 1 page 64 from "Index and Abstract of Deeds of Yancey Co., NC Deed Book 1" by Sally Williams, 1985).
Samuel Carpenter married Frances Vaughn before ca 1838 in Yancey Co, NC. I do not know what the proof of her maiden name is. Several researchers list her as a Vaughn. I do not know her parents names. Frances may have a brother named Alfred Vaughn, born ca 1817, as Samuel and Frances' daughter Sophronia was residing with him in 1870. Samuel and Frances' oldest child was named "Alfred" as well, so that makes him very likely to be Frances' brother. Frances was born 20 Jan 1817.
Concerning the Vaughn family (also spelled "Vaughan"), I found none in Burke in 1790, but several in neighboring Rutherford County.
In 1800 Burke, there was Sherwood Vaughn (1755/74) and Joshua Vaughn (1774/84).
In 1810 Burke there was only James Vaughn (1765/84).
In 1820 Burke there was James Vaughn (1775/94). He had four girls under 10, born ca 1810/20, which could easily include Frances (1817). Also listed in 1820 was Micajah Vaughn (bef 1775), who had two girls under 10, so Frances could fit there as well.
In 1830 Burke there were several Vaughns, but only Micajah Vaughn (1770/80) had a girl in the 10-15 age group, or born ca 1815/20, which fits for Frances (1817).
By default, Micajah would be the prime suspect, based only on the above. However, one other possibility is a strong one. Though never listed on the census, William Vaughn married Elizabeth Davis in 1814, and died sometime prior to ca 1820. Elizabeth later married John Vance. It seems like she might have had one daughter by William Vance, born ca 1815/20. So that makes her a suspect for Frances' mother. And since she was already known to live in the same area as the Carpenter family, this makes her a better candidate. However, this connection between Frances Vaughn (1817) and William and Elizabeth is far from proven.
In 1833, Yancey County was formed from the part of Burke where the Carpenters lived. However, the 1840 census for Yancey shows no Vaughn families. They were all still in Burke in 1840. This is more circumstantial evidence that Frances might be from the William Vaughn and Elizabeth Davis family, since that would make them neighbors (and relatives) to the Carpenters, whereas none of the other Vaughn families of Burke seem to live near that area.
On 21 Dec 1838, Samuel Carpenter received a State land grant in Yancey County, for 100 acres on head waters of North Toe River on east side of Ball Mountain. (Yancey Co, NC Deed Book 1 page 366 from "Index and Abstract of Deeds of Yancey Co., NC Deed Book 1" by Sally Williams, 1985).
On 24 Dec 1838, Samuel Carpenter received a State land grant in Yancey County, for 100 acres Rogers Ridge, waters of Three Mile Creek, adjoining Benjamin More and others. (Yancey Co, NC Deed Book 1 page 366 from "Index and Abstract of Deeds of Yancey Co., NC Deed Book 1" by Sally Williams, 1985).
On 13 Mar 1839, Thomas Wilson, Esquire, High Sheriff of Yancey County, sold Samuel Carpenter land, based on unpaid taxes. The land was formerly Phillip Anthony's heirs, lost due to back taxes. Land was on Three Mile Creek, joining Autrey and More, 100 acres. Witnesses were William B. Westall and J. A. Wilson. (Yancey Co, NC Deed Book 1 page 372 from "Index and Abstract of Deeds of Yancey Co., NC Deed Book 1" by Sally Williams, 1985).
Samuel Carpenter was listed on the 1840 census in Yancey Co, NC, several pages from his father and brothers, but based on the neighbors, he was still in the same area.

Samuel Carpenter was listed on the 1840 tax list in Yancey County in Captain Vance's Company. He was taxed for 350 acres, valued at $125, and he had one white poll (himself), and his tax was $2.12 1/2. (Toe Valley Genealogical Society Newsletter, Volume 5, Number 8, October 1993, 1840 Yancey County Tax List, Capt Vance's Company by Kathy Sullivan)
Samuel's 350 acres in 1840 is mostly accounted for. He received two land grants of 100 acres each, in 1838, and a deed for 100 acres in 1839. That leaves 50 more acres unaccounted for.
Samuel Carpenter was listed on the 1841 tax list in Yancey County in Captain Swan's Company. He was taxed for 350 acres (same as in 1840), valued at $150, and he had one white poll (himself). (Toe Valley Genealogical Society Newsletter, Volume 5, Number 9, November 1993, 1841 Yancey County Tax List, Capt Swan's Company by Kathy Sullivan)
In the Spring 1848 term of Yancey County Court, the Valuations of Yancey County lands were all reduced by 33 1/3 cent per acre. Samuel Carpenter was listed in North Toe River District with his land of $100 reduced to $66 2/3. (Toe Valley Genealogical Society Newsletter, Volume 2, Number 6, August 1990, "Yancey County Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions Minutes to Spring Term 1848" extracted by Rhonda Gunter)
Samuel and family were listed on the 1850 census in Yancey Co, NC two houses from his father.

Samuel Carpenter and wife must have caught some contagious disease, for they both died within 10 days of each other. Samuel on 15 Oct 1862, and Frances on 25 Oct 1862, both in Mitchell County. I don't know what caused their deaths. They are both buried at the Carpenter Cemetery in modern Avery County, NC. Samuel's nephew Jacob Carpenter (1833) wrote of their deaths in his "Anthology of Death":
"Samel Carpenter ag 62 did Oc 15 1862. Wars farmer made hoses and spinels by thos."
"Franky Carpenter ag 56 did oc 25 1862. Harde workin womin in farm. Made corn oates."
After their deaths, some of the younger children were raised by relatives. Some went to Cherokee County (now Graham County), NC where their Uncle David Carpenter had moved, but most remained in the Mitchell County area.
A Loose estate record (NC Archives) shows Samuel Carpenter's heirs as of 1873. His administrator (at first) was his brother Levi, but when he died, it went to M. D. Wiseman (brother-in-law Martin D. Wiseman). Heirs and their residences as of 1873 included: Alfred and Nancy Carpenter, Graham Co, NC; Elizabeth Carpenter and husband William Carpenter, Mitchell Co, NC, Mary Singleton/Mrs Martin Singelton, Jackson Co, NC; Mantis Singleton, Mitchell Co, NC; James M. Carpenter, Mitchell Co, NC; Josiah M. Carpenter, Mitchell Co, NC; Sophia Taylor/Mrs. James D. Taylor, Graham Co, NC; Aaron T. Carpenter, Mitchell Co, NC; Rachel M. Sullins, Mitchell Co, NC. (Toe Valley Genealogical Society Newsletter, Volume 7, Number 8, October 1995, Estate Citations by Kathy Gunter Sullivan)
Samuel and Frances Vaughn Carpenter had nine known children, as proven by the 1850 and 1860 census. Their children are also named in an 1873 list of heirs of Samuel Carpenter, including an "Aaron T. Carpenter" of Mitchell Co, NC, that I have yet to identify. All the children, except Erwin L. Carpenter were named in those records.
Alfred Andrew Carpenter (1838-1925)
Margaret Elizabeth Carpenter (c1841)
Jonathan N. M. Carpenter (c1843)
Sophronia Emaline Carpenter (1852-1938)
Josiah Martin Carpenter (c1856)
Alfred Andrew Carpenter was born 31 Oct 1838 in Yancey Co, NC in the area that later became Mitchell County (in 1861) and finally Avery County (in 1911).
Alfred was apparently with his parents for the 1840 census, and was with them in 1850.
Alfred married Nancy Daniels before 1860 in Yancey Co, NC. Nancy was born ca 1844/45 in NC. I only found one Nancy Daniels in 1850, and she was in neighboring Watauga County, age 9 (born ca 1840/41) and a child of Perin and Mary Daniels. I'm not sure if this is her or not, due to the age difference.
Alfred and family were listed on the 1860 census in Yancey County next to his parents.

For the Civil War, Alfred enlisted on 27 Jun 1862 in Mitchell Co, NC as a Private in Company B, 5th Battalion Cavalry. He was transferred to 65th Regiment, Company K on 3 Aug 1863.
After the Civil War, during the mid to late 1860's, Alfred joined his Uncle David Carpenter and moved to Cherokee County (now Graham County), NC and settled in Cheoah Township.
Alfred and family were listed on the 1870 census in Cherokee County, NC just five houses from his first cousin (and my ancestor) William Carpenter (son of David), and David just two more houses away.

In 1872, Graham County was created from the section of Cherokee where the Carpenters lived. I don't know how long Alfred remained there, but he was still there in 1873.
"Alfred and Nancy Carpenter" of Graham Co, NC were named as heirs of Samuel Carpenter in his estate records (1873).
Before 1880 he had returned to Mitchell Co, NC and was listed on the 1880 census there in Linville Township.

I don't have the 1900, 1910 or 1920 census listings yet.
Alfred Carpenter died in Avery County, NC on 25 Feb 1925. He is buried at the Carpenter Cemetery.
Margaret Elizabeth Carpenter was born ca 1840/41 in Yancey Co, NC in the area that later became Mitchell County (in 1861) and finally Avery County (in 1911).
Elizabeth was with her parents for the 1850 and 1860 census.
Elizabeth apparently had two children out of wedlock in the 1860's. On the 1870 census, she was in Mitchell Co, NC with two kids, either widowed (from someone also named Carpenter) or single.

"Elizabeth Carpenter and husband William Carpenter" of Mitchell Co, NC were named as heirs of Samuel Carpenter in his estate records (1873).
Jonathan N. M. Carpenter was born ca 1842/43 in Yancey Co, NC in the area that later became Mitchell County (in 1861) and finally Avery County (in 1911).
Jonathan was with his parents for the 1850 and 1860 census.
Jonathan Carpenter married Hannah Adelaid --- between 1860 and 1870 in Mitchell Co, NC.
They were listed on the 1870 census in Mitchell in Linville Township, with no children, so probably just recently married.

I don't yet have the 1900 or later census records.
Erwin L. Carpenter was born ca 1844/45 in Yancey Co, NC in the area that later became Mitchell County (in 1861) and finally Avery County (in 1911).
Erwin was with his parents for the 1850 and 1860 census. I have no record of him after that. He might have died in the Civil War, or moved away. He was not named in the estate records (1863-1873) of his father Samuel.
Mary M. Carpenter was born ca 1848/49 in Yancey Co, NC in the area that later became Mitchell County (in 1861) and finally Avery County (in 1911).
Mary was with her parents for the 1850 and 1860 census.
Mary Carpenter married John Martin Singleton on 23 Feb 1866 in Mitchell County. John was a son of John and Sarah Singleton of Yancey Co, NC.
They joined her brother Alfred in Cherokee (now Graham) County, NC before 1870. They weren't listed particularly close to any of her relatives though.

"Mary Singleton/Mrs. Martin Singleton" of Jackson Co, NC were named as heirs of Samuel Carpenter in his estate records (1873). This indicates they left the Cherokee Co, NC area between 1870 and 1873 and moved to Jackson County. A "Mantis Singleton" of Mitchell Co, NC was also named. I don't know who that is.
I have no additional data on this family at present.
James M. Carpenter was born ca 1851/52 in Yancey Co, NC in the area that later became Mitchell County (in 1861) and finally Avery County (in 1911).
James was home with his parents for the 1860 census.
I don't have James in the 1870 census.
"James M. Carpenter" of Mitchell Co, NC was named as heir of Samuel Carpenter in his estate records (1873). So apparently James was still around.
Sophronia Emaline Carpenter was born 29 Jun 1852 in Yancey Co, NC in the area that later became Mitchell County (in 1861) and finally Avery County (in 1911).
Sophronia was with her parents for the 1860 census. After their deaths in 1862, she went to live with her probable Uncle Alfred Vaughn in Cherokee County (now Graham), NC. Alfred and his wife Tempe were both listed as Deaf and Dumb on the 1870 census. Sophronia's brother Alfred and sister Mary were also in the same county then.

"Sophia Taylor/Mrs. James D. Taylor" of Graham Co, NC were named as heir of Samuel Carpenter in his estate records (1873).
James and Sophronia were listed on the 1880 census in Graham County (created 1872 from Cherokee) next door to Mary Carpenter Farr, her first cousin (daughter of David Carpenter).

I didn't find them (yet) on the 1900 and 1910 census, but they were probably still in Graham County.
James D. Taylor died in Graham County on 3 Jun 1915. He is buried at the Old Mother Cemetery (Cheoah Church) in Robbinsville. His marker reads "J. D. Taylor Nov 12 1851 - Jun 3 1915".
Sophronia died in Graham County on 13 Feb 1938. She is buried by her husband at Old Mother Cemetery. Her marker reads "Sophie E. Carpenter Taylor June 29 1852 - Feb 13 1938". I've been to their graves at least twice.
Josiah Martin Carpenter was born ca 1855/56 in Yancey Co, NC in the area that later became Mitchell County (in 1861) and finally Avery County (in 1911).
Martin was home with his parents for the 1860 census. After their deaths in 1862, he was apparently sent to be raised by his Aunt Sophia Carpenter English, and was listed with them on the 1870 census.

Rachel M. Carpenter was born 28 Jul 1850 in Yancey Co, NC in the area that later became Mitchell County (in 1861) and finally Avery County (in 1911).
Rachel was home with her parents for the 1860 census. After her parents deaths in 1862, she was probably sent to live with other relatives. I don't know who at present.
Rachel married A. S. Sullins in Mitchell Co, NC on 24 May 1869. The marriage record shows "A. S. Sulins" son of "Andy and Elmira Sulins" and "Rach Carpenter", parents left blank, married by S. J. Buchanan, JP. (Toe Valley Genealogical Society Newsletter, Volume 2, Number 2, April 1990, "Mitchell County Marriage Records 1865-1869" extracted by Rhonda Gunter)
"Rachel M. Sullins" of Mitchell Co, NC was named as heir of Samuel Carpenter in his estate records (1873).
She was married afterwards, to James W. Henline. I don't have a date for that marriage.
Rachel died in Mitchell Co, NC on 16 Oct 1918. Her death record gives her as "Rachael Henline", age 58, Father listed as "??? Carpenter" and mother was blank.
