I (Marty Grant) am a 3rd Great Grandson of William Carpenter and Margaret Ann Davis.

Special thanks to Evelyn Rice Tharp for data shared on this family.

William Carpenter was born 8 Nov 1830 (Date from William Carpenter Family Bible) in old Burke Co, NC. He was apparently born in that section of Burke that later became Watauga County, for on the 1860 census, he reported his birth place as Watauga County, NC. His father David Carpenter lived in Burke Co, NC in 1830. They were in the section that became Yancey Co, NC in 1833. A section of Yancey, Ashe and other counties were cut off to form Watauga in 1849, so William must have been born in that area. I'm not sure precisely where this might have been.

I've never found any direct proof that William was a son of David Carpenter, but all circumstantial evidence points to that fact.

William was probably named for his father's older brother William Carpenter. It is possible he was named for someone on his mother's side of the family as well. Unfortunately, we do not know who William's mother was.

William was apparently home with his parents for the 1840 census in Yancey Co, NC.

He was not home with his father in 1850 (also in Yancey Co, NC), but had moved south to Cherokee County, NC (now Graham County) and was living with his cousins (and future in-laws) Jacob Davis and wife Susanna Miller Davis. Both Jacob and Susanna were grandchildren of Mathias Carpenter, whereas William Carpenter was a Great Grandson of Mathias.

William Carpenter married his cousin Margaret Ann Davis on 11 Dec 1855 in Cherokee (now Graham) Co, NC. (Date from William Carpenter Family Bible).

Margaret Ann Davis was born 30 Jan 1835 in Ashe Co, NC, daughter of Jacob Davis and Susanna Miller.

William and Margaret were listed twice on the 1860 census in Cherokee Co, NC for some reason. The first listing gave incorrect birth place information, so it was probably reported by a neighbor or someone else (either that, or there was another family with the same names and ages in the area, which seems unlikely). The second (and correct) listing shows that William's brother Thomas was residing with them.

For the Civil War, William Carpenter, like most of his male relatives and neighbors, enlisted in the War on the Confederate side. He enlisted on 23 Jul 1862 in Company H, 69th North Carolina Regiment as a First Corporal. I don't have his record yet, so I don't know much beyond the above. His brother Wilson Carpenter enlisted in the same company on the same date. Both of these enlistments may have been a result of their younger brother Thomas Carpenter who had died in the War in March 1862.

William and family were listed on the 1870 census in Cherokee Co, NC in Cheoah Township. William's father David Carpenter was two houses away, probably living on William's property, since he had none of his own.  William's first cousin Alfred Carpenter was 5 households away.

In 1872, Cheoah Township and others were cut off from Cherokee County to form the new Graham County.

William and family were listed on the 1880 census in Graham Co, NC in Cheoah Township. 16 year old Jesse Williams, (a grand nephew of Margaret Davis Carpenter) was residing with them as a Servant. Jesse's mother Nancy Deaver Williams Crisp was living next door with her new husband. William Carpenter's widowed step-mother Mirah Gregg Carpenter was about 16 houses away. William's brother Wilson Carpenter was just 10 houses away.

William Carpenter died 13 Jan 1885 in Graham Co, NC. This date is recorded in his Family Bible. He was only 54 years old. I don't know what his cause of death was. He was buried at Old Mother Cemetery (Cheoah Church) in Robbinsville. His grave is marked with a small obelisk style stone that says "William Carpenter 1830-1885". His wife is buried next to him. I've visited their graves several times.

After the death of her husband, Margaret Davis Carpenter lived with her daughter Arizona Carpenter Rice until they moved away, then she lived with her daughter Elvira Carpenter George until her own death.

The 1890 census was lost, so we don't know where Margaret was then, though, presumably she was in Graham Co, NC with her daughter Arizona.

For the 1900 census, Margaret was listed in Graham Co, NC with her daughter Arizona Carpenter Rice.

Around this time, ca 1911, the Rice family moved to Georgia. Margaret remained in Graham County, and began living with her daughter Elvira Carpenter George.

I don't have the 1920 census listings yet, but presumably, Margaret was listed in Graham County. Evelyn Tharp tells me that Margaret was residing with her daughter Elvira George in 1920.

Margaret died on 12 Apr 1927 in Graham Co, NC at the good old age of 92. She is buried a few rows from her husband William Carpenter at the Old Mother Cemetery (Cheoah Church) in Robbinsville. Her stone says "Margaret A. Carpenter Jan 30 1835 - Apr 12 1927".

I have not done a thorough search of Cherokee and Graham County records, so I imagine there are many records to be found for the Carpenters, primarily deed records and such. I have checked births, marriages, and deaths, and found many records for this family. Other records are waiting to be discovered.

Children

William Carpenter and Margaret Ann Davis had seven children, all proven by their Family Bible, and many are also confirmed by other records, including census and death records.

Thomas Alexander Carpenter (1857-1914)

Naomi Alcedona Elizabeth Carpenter (1859-1859)

Cordelia Hazeltine Carpenter (1860-1901)

Susanna Malinda Caroline Carpenter (1862-1909)

Sarah Elvira Carpenter (1867-1939)

Jacob Mathias Miller Carpenter (1870-1945)

Mary Arizona Montevideo Carpenter (1872-1957)

Thomas Alexander Carpenter was born 28 Jan 1857 (proven by William Carpenter Family Bible) in Cheoah Township of Cherokee Co, NC (now Graham County). Thomas was probably named for his Uncle Thomas D. Carpenter and / or his uncle Isaac Thomas Davis. I'm not sure the origin of his middle name "Alexander", as no one in the immediate family bore that name.

Thomas was home with his parents for the 1860, 1870 and 1880 census.

Thomas married Laura Amanda McCain on 24 Jun 1883 in Jackson Co, NC. I'm not sure how they met, but she was apparently from Jackson County. They returned to Graham County to live after marriage. I don't know who Laura's parents were, but a check of the 1870 Jackson Co, NC census might turn them up.  On the marriage record, he was listed as "Thos A. Carpenter" age 26, and she as "Laura A. McLain" age 16. They were married at the home of "J. E. McLain", (perhaps her father?) They were married by A. B. Clemmenes, MG (Minister of the Gospel). Witnesses were W. D. Terrell and James H. Cathey. I don't know if Laura's name was actually McCain, or if it was McLain. I'll have to check more records to be sure.

Laura died on 18 Dec 1887 in Graham Co, NC. I don't know where she is buried, perhaps Old Mother Cemetery, or perhaps she was taken back to Jackson County. If she is at Old Mother Cemetery, her grave is unmarked.

Thomas married Sarah Cordelia Stillwell on 30 Mar 1889, also in Jackson County. They returned to Graham Co, NC to live. She was a daughter of John F. Stillwell and Sarah Harris of Jackson Co, NC. (Parents names proven by her death certificate in 1957).  Their marriage record showed him as "T. A. Carpenter" age 32, and her as "Cordelia Stillwell" age 22. They were married at "Webster Township" by A. H. Sims, BM (Baptist Minister). Witnesses were L. D. Hall and G. W. Davis. (George W. Davis was Thomas Carpenter's 1st cousin, a son of Jonathan Miller Davis).

Thomas and family were listed on the 1900 census in Graham Co, NC. He was 9 houses from his widowed mother.

At some point in his life, Thomas Carpenter was the Sheriff of Graham County, I believe. I'll have to check into this for more details.

Thomas Carpenter died on 28 Apr 1914 in Graham Co, NC. He was only 57, just slightly older than his father was when he died. Thomas is buried at the Old Mother Cemetery (Cheoah Church) in Robbinsville. His stone reads "Thomas A. Carpenter 1857-1914".

I don't have the 1920 census listings yet, but Thomas' widow Cordelia was probably listed there in Graham Co, NC.

Cordelia Stillwell Carpenter died on 25 Aug 1957 in Graham Co, NC. She was 90 years old. She is also buried at Old Mother Cemetery (Cheoah Church). Her stone reads "Cordelia S. Carpenter 1867-1957". Her death record shows her a child of John Stillwell and Sarah Harris, and that she died in Cheoah Township. (Graham Co, NC Deaths Book 21 page 18)

Naomi Alcedona Elizabeth Carpenter was born 5 May 1859 (proven by William Carpenter Family Bible) in Cheoah Township of Cherokee Co, NC (now Graham County).

Naomi died on 26 Aug 1859, just 5 months old. She is buried at Old Mother Cemetery (Cheoah Church) in Robbinsville. Her tombstone says "Naomi Carpenter died 1859".

Cordelia Hazeltine Carpenter was born 25 Aug 1860 (proven by William Carpenter Family Bible) in Cheoah Township of Cherokee Co, NC (now Graham County).

Cordelia was home with her parents for the 1870 and 1880 census.

Cordelia married Thomas Leander Rogers on 21 Sep 1882 in Graham Co, NC. He was a son of Jesse Newton Rogers and Sarah "Sallie" Farr, and a brother to Jasper D. Rogers who married Cordelia's sister Caroline Carpenter. Their marriage record showed him as "T. L. Rogers" age 21, and her as "C. H. Carpenter" age 22 and that they were married by P. G. Green, Minister, at home of William Carpenter (her father).

Thomas and Cordelia and family were listed on the 1900 census in Graham Co, NC in Cheoah Township.  They were five houses from her widowed mother, and just a few from many other relatives.

Cordelia Carpenter Rogers died on 9 Jun 1901 in Graham Co, NC. She was just 40 years old. She is buried at the Old Mother Cemetery (Cheoah Church) in Robbinsville. Her stone says "Cordelia Rogers, wife of T. L. Rogers, Aug 25 1860 - Jun 9 1901".

Almost a year later, Thomas Rogers married again. He married Fannie Rice on 20 Feb 1902 in Graham Co, NC. She was a daughter of Gabriel P. Rice and Mary Josephine Mitchell.

Thomas and his new wife and children were listed on the 1910 census in Graham Co, NC. His widowed father Jesse N. Rogers was residing with them.

Sarah Elvira Carpenter was born 4 Jul 1867 (proven by William Carpenter Family Bible) in Cheoah Township of Cherokee Co, NC (now Graham County).

Elvira was home with her parents for the 1870 and 1880 census.

Elvira Carpenter married Thomas Jefferson George on 21 Sep 1882 in Graham Co, NC. Jeff George was a son of Lafayette George and Rachel Hensley. Their marriage record shows "T. J. George" age 20 and "Elvira Carpenter" age 15, married by P. G. Green, Minister, at home of William Carpenter (her father)

Elvira and Jeff are my Great Great Grandparents. See their own page for more on their family.

Elvira died on 3 Jul 1939 and Jeff on 11 May 1945. Both are buried at Old Mother Cemetery (Cheoah Church) in Robbinsville. Elvira's death record shows her parents as "William Carpenter" and "Margaret Davis". See their own page for additional information.

Jacob Mathias Miller Carpenter was born 23 Jun 1870 (proven by William Carpenter Family Bible) in Cheoah Township of Cherokee Co, NC (now Graham County).

Jacob was named for several ancestors. "Jacob" was probably after his grandfather Jacob Davis, and for Great Grandfather Jacob Carpenter. "Mathias" was probably for Great Great Grandfather Mathias Carpenter, and "Miller" for grandmother Susanna Miller Davis, wife of Jacob Davis.

Jacob was home with his parents for the 1880 census.

Jacob (like his older brother Thomas) went to Jackson Co, NC to marry. He married Ida Belle Stillwell there on 21 Aug 1890. She was a daughter of John F. Stillwell and Sarah Harris, and sister to Thomas Carpenter's second wife Sarah Cordelia Stillwell. Unlike Thomas and wife, Jacob and wife remained in Jackson Co, NC and didn't come back to Graham (except to visit, I presume). Their marriage record shows them as "J. M. Carpenter" age 20 and "Belle Stillwell" age 19, married at "Webster Township" by  J. G. Ammons, Minister. Witnesses were: H. C. Cowan, J. Davis and Geo Davis. (Jacob and George Davis were Jacob Carpenter's first cousins, sons of Jonathan Miller Davis).

Jacob and family were listed on the 1900 census in Jackson Co, NC in Webster Township.

Mary Arizona Montevideo Carpenter was born 19 Oct 1872 (proven by William Carpenter Family Bible) in Cheoah Township of Graham County. Though all her siblings were born in the same place, Arizona was the only one technically born in "Graham County". Graham was created in 1872 from Cherokee County.

Arizona was home with her parents for the 1880 census.

Arizona Carpenter married William Harvey Rice on 21 Aug 1890 in Graham Co, NC. He was a son of Noah W. Rice and Margaret Elizabeth Colvard.  Their marriage record shows "Wm H. Rice" age 22 and "Arizona Carpenter" age 18, married by N. M. E. Slaughter, JP, at home of Margaret Carpenter (Arizona's mother).

William and Arizona were listed on the 1900 census in Graham County, with Arizona's widowed mother residing with them.

Five of William and Arizona's seven children died young.

After the death of William, Arizona and family moved to Kansas. Arizona died in Johnson Co, KS on 4 Mar 1957.
