[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home]
I (Marty Grant) am a 3rd Great Grand nephew of David L. Carpenter.
David L. Carpenter was born April 1858 in Yancey Co, NC in the section of Yancey that became Mitchell County in 1862 and later became Avery County in 1911.
David is a son of David Carpenter and Mira Gregg. He was probably named for his father David Carpenter. I haven't yet found what the "L" middle initial might stand for.
David was with his parents for the 1860 census (Yancey Co, NC). He was still a child when the family left Mitchell County (formed 1862 from Yancey and other counties) for Cherokee (now Graham) Co, NC. He was listed with his parents on the 1870 census in Cherokee Co, NC. In 1872 their region of Cherokee was cut off to form Graham County.
David L. Carpenter married Elizabeth Braswell in the 1870-1880 timeframe, (probably closer to 1880). I did not find a marriage record for them in either Cherokee or Graham County, so they may have married in another county, or else the marriage just wasn't recorded. I have noted that there were no "Braswell" families (or variant spellings) in that area in 1870 or 1880. So this may indicate that David went elsewhere to marry Elizabeth, or else her family just passed through the area between census years, during which time they married, then her family moved away, leaving her behind. That is just a theory though. Her maiden name of "Braswell" is listed on their daughter Emily's death certificate. As far as I know, that is the only source for her maiden name.
There was one Braswell listed on the 1870 index in Mitchell Co, NC (Thad Braswell), so that could be her family. There were several listed in Caldwell County, and none others closer than in these two counties. I didn't check TN or GA census records.
David and Elizabeth were listed on the 1880 census in Graham Co, NC. They were just a few houses from his half brother Wilson Carpenter.

Elizabeth died 21 Apr 1890 in Graham Co, NC. She is buried at Old Mother Cemetery (Cheoah Church) in Robbinsville. Her stone says "Lizzie Carpenter June 15 1852 - Apr 21 1890".
David married Alice Brown in Graham Co, NC on 24 Dec 1897. I haven't yet identified her parents. There were no Brown families near David Carpenter in 1880, but several Brown families were in Stecoah Township in 1880. One of these could be Alice's parents. She was born in 1881, so not listed on the 1880 census, and married before the 1900 census, so other records will have to be used to find her parents. Their marriage record shows them as "D. L. Carpenter" age 34 and "Allie Brown" age 16, married by W. W. Flemming, JP at Talula Creek.
David and Alice were listed on the 1900 census in Graham County. They were next door to David's sister Martha Willix.

For some reason, David and family moved to Cherokee Co, NC before 1910. They were listed on the 1910 census in Murphy Township, in Peachtree community. Perhaps that is where Alice's family was from. I know of no Carpenter family connections to that area, at least not close ones.

I don't yet have the 1920 census entry, but they were probably still in Cherokee County.
David L. Carpenter died in Cherokee County on 7 Jan 1925. I don't know where he was buried. His death record listed his parents as "David Carpenter" and "Mirie Graves".
I don't know when Alice died, nor where she is buried.
David L. Carpenter and his first wife Elizabeth Braswell, had three children, two of which are proven by the 1900 census. The other (Charles) is unproven. David and his second wife Alice Brown had no children together.
Hattie L. Carpenter (1886-1983)
Emily Nettie Carpenter (1889-1913)
Charles N. Carpenter was born ca 1881/82 in Graham Co, NC. I don't know what proof there is that he is a child of David L. Carpenter, but his name is listed in an article written by someone about Hattie Carpenter Conley, published in either the Cherokee or Graham County Heritage book (I'll try to figure out the exact source, and author).
Charles was not home with his father for the 1900 census, nor did I find him anywhere else in Graham County. He would have been about 18 years old, so he may have been off at school, or residing with another family, and not enumerated (or just missed by me or the census taker).
A marriage record was found in Graham County for "Chas. Carpenter" age 19 and Ella West age 24 dated 7 Mar 1901 by W. C. Morgan, Minister, at home of Tobe Garland. This is most likely the same Charles. Ella's birth date was ca 1876/77, based on her age at marriage in 1901. I didn't find her on the 1880 census in Graham County, nor did I find her in 1900 Graham County.
So far, I've found no additional data on Charles and Ella. I did not find them on the 1910 census in Graham County. There was a "C. N. Carpenter" listed as witness to several Graham County marriages in the 1900-1910 timeframe, and I feel that is this same person, most likely.
Hattie L. Carpenter was born 24 Apr 1886 in Graham Co, NC (date proven by tombstone). She was home with her father and step-mother for the 1900 census.
Hattie married Girdine D. Conley on 20 Oct 1902 in Graham County. Their marriage record shows "G. D. Conley" age 21 and "Hattie Carpenter" age 16, married by J. E. Norton, Minister, at home of Buck Campbell (relation?). Gird was a son of John T. Conley and Alice Amanda Scott of Cherokee Co, NC.
Girdine was from Cherokee County (Topton - Rhodo area), and they moved back there after marriage. They were listed there for the 1910 census. They were listed next to one of my ancestors (not related to either of them) Caroline Winfrey Wright.

I don't have the 1920 census records yet.
My grandmother (Luella George Grant 1924-1990) knew Gird and Hattie, as they were her neighbors where she was born and raised in Topton, and she was related to Hattie by blood, and Gird by marriage.
Gird died in Cherokee Co, NC on 4 Apr 1972 and Hattie on 18 May 1983. Both are buried at Red Marble Cemetery (Red Marble Baptist Church) near Topton. I've been to their graves several times.
Emily Nettie Carpenter was born August 1889 in Graham Co, NC. She was home with her father and step-mother for the 1900 census.
Emily Carpenter married Clark Marcus on 13 Jan 1907 in Graham County, NC. Their marriage record showed "Clark Marcus" age 19 of Cherokee Co, NC, and "Emily Carpenter" age 17 of Graham, married by G. W. Colvard, JP, at home of D. L. Carpenter (her father). One of the witnesses was C. N. Carpenter, probably her brother Charles. I have not found Clark's parents. He was born ca 1887/88, but he was not listed in Graham on the 1900 census, though there were several Marcus families listed.
Clark and Emily were in the 1910 census in Graham County in Yellow Creek Township, not near any of her relatives.

They must have moved to Cherokee Co, NC right after 1910.
Emily died in Cherokee Co, NC on 19 Mar 1913. Her death record shows her parents as "D. L. Carpenter" and "Lizzie Braswell".
I don't know when Clark died, nor where either are buried.
