I (Marty Grant) don't know how I'm related to the James Collins family. I am sure he is somehow related to my ancestor Jonah Collins (c1774).
James Collins was born before 1774, possibly in SC, or perhaps in another state. I don't know who his parents might have been. He was not listed on the 1786 tax list for either Prince George or Prince Frederick Parish.
James was listed on the 1790 census in Georgetown District, Prince George Parish. Unfortunately this census was alphabetical, so we can't tell where he lived exactly or who his neighbors were.
1790 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census)
1790 Georgetown Dist, SC Prince George Parish pg 53 James Collins 1-1-1-0-4 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 16 and Up (before 1774) James COLLINS 1 Male(s) under 16 (1774/1790) Son? 1 Female(s) any age (before 1790) Wife?
Marion District was formed in 1798 (effective 1800) from Georgetown District.
James Collins was not found in Marion (nor nearby counties) for the 1800 census. He either moved away or died before that time.
In a Marion District, SC deed dated 5 Jun 1800 a "James Collins" of Moore Co, NC appointed Mack McKissack of Washington Co, GA to be attorney on his behalf to receive a "negro wench Cyntha and her increase", the late property of Haney McKissac, deceased, of SC. I don't know if this is the same James Collins, but if not, why was this deed filed in Marion District, SC? (Marion Co, SC Deed Book A page 14 from "Marion County South Carolina Abstracts of Deeds Volume One Books A - E 1800-1811", by Lucille Utley, and Alita White Sutcliffe, 1996 * All other deeds referred to on this page in Books A through E are also from this book)..
The 1800 census for Moore Co, NC shows two men named James Collins living there (and also a Stephen and a Thomas and a Thomas Jr). All of those names were common among the Marion Collins' families, so perhaps all are connected in some way. Backing up to 1790 Moore Co, NC, only one James Collins was listed then, so the "extra" one in 1800 could be the one from 1790 Prince George Parish, SC.
James Collins had at least one son, per the 1790 census.
