Special thanks to Jo Dickerson for data shared on this family. Jonah Collins was born ca 1773/74 in SC, probably in the area that later became Marion County. I don't know who his parents might have been. Jonah does have one proven brother in Dempsey Collins (bef 1755). Due to the age difference, I'd guess they had the same father, but different mothers, though I have no additional information on that subject. According to W.W. Sellers in his History of Marion County, South Carolina, 1902, page 512, Jonah Collins was a brother of an elder Thomas Collins, but so far, I've seen no evidence to back that up. He could easily be a brother of Thomas Collins (whom Sellers referred to as Thomas Jr) as they are about the same age. Here is what Sellers wrote about Jonah Collins (page 512-516) (anything in brackets [...] was added by me): ... The first now known of them were two brothers, a hundred or more years ago---the two brothers were Thomas and Jonah. Thomas was the progenitor of the Collins about Maiden Down and Mullins. The writer saw old man Thomas seventy years ago; he lived and died on Maiden Down and Martin Swamp, right at the junction of the latter with the former; he was then past middle life, and, I think, was a Justice of Peace or Magistrate away back in the 30's--a prominent man in hi day; he had a family, but do not know who his wife was; .... ... Of the two brothers, old Collins, Thomas and Jonah, the latter became the progenitor of the Collins below Marion and the Pee Dee Island Collins; don't know much about them. There were two or three brothers, descendants of old Jonah, to wit: William, James and Jonah--these were either sons of old Jonah or grand-sons... The "Jonah" referred to above by Sellers was actually Jonathan Collins. The younger "Jonah" he mentioned was either this Jonah, or his son Jonah Jr. Based on an analysis of various records, it seems Jonah could belong to several of the early Collins families. He wasn't listed on any census records until 1810, so that means in 1790 and 1800 he should have been home with his parents. Since he was born ca 1774, he could fit in different age categories, but the 1800 census shows no Collins household (in Marion) with an apparent son that age. Backing up to 1790, several candidates are found. Firstly, David Collins has an apparent son age 16+ (born before 1774) and one son under 16 (born ca 1774/90). Jonah could fit in either of those categories. David was missing from Marion in 1800, but back by 1810 (with those older sons not with him any longer). Elizabeth Collins had three boys age 16+ (born before 1774) with her in 1790, but they were all three gone from her household by 1800. Of some note is that in 1810 when Jonah was first on the census as head of household, he had a woman with him age 45+ (born before 1765). I strongly suspect that whoever this woman is, she is his mother, so that makes Elizabeth a strong candidate. Since I also believe Elizabeth to be the mother of Thomas Collins, this would support Sellers statement about Thomas and Jonah being brothers. I have no solid proof to back up this theory though. Jonathan Collins had an apparent son under 16 (born ca 1774/90) with him in 1790 who was gone by 1800, but other evidence proves that Jonah is not Jonathan's son. So that means Elizabeth or David are the prime candidates for Jonah's parents. I can't say who it is with any certainty. In a deposition Jonah made in 1845, he stated that Dempsey Collins was his brother. Since Dempsey was so much older than him, it would seem likely they had different mothers. Jonah Collins was listed on the 1810 census in Marion District. He was listed just four houses from Thomas Collins (further supporting the theory that they were brothers). Jonah did not seem to be married at this time, but he had an older woman with him, who could be a wife, if much older than him, or more likely it is his widowed mother. Unfortunately this census was alphabetical, so we can't determine where he was residing, nor who his neighbors were. After Sarah's death, a case was made among the heirs, and filed in the Court of Common Pleas under Jonah Collins vs. Robert T. Collins, et al. Jo Dickerson found this record, and it names all of Jonah's heirs, including several grandchildren.

Sarah. Jonah Collins and his two wives had 17 known children, 15
proven by the 1884 Estate records, two others by the census records
(these two apparently died unmarried). The 1884 Court/Estate record
names 15 children, and numerous grandchildren and several Great
Grandchildren.

| Unknown Daughter born ca 1794/1804 was not with Jonah in 1810, but someone this age was with him in 1820. It is possible this was just a boarder of some sort, or perhaps a daughter of his wife by a previous marriage, or a niece. She was not home in 1830. |

Martha was apparently home with her parents for the 1820 census (aged "under 10", born ca 1810/20), and still home in 1830 (age 15-19, born ca 1810/15). Martha Collins married Daniel Turner ca 1843/46 in Marion Dist, SC. See their own page for additional information. |

Hannah Collins
was born ca 1825/26 (per 1850 census) in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in
the Rowell Township area. She is a proven child of Jonah Collins as
named in his 1884 estate division (as "Hannah Beverly").
She was apparently home with Jonah for the 1830 census (age "under 5", born ca 1825/30), and with them in 1840 (age 10-14, born ca 1825/30), and she was with him in 1850 ("Hannah", age 24). She was not home with her widowed mother in 1860, so she had probably married or died before then. The estate records listed her as having married a Beverly (given name not listed). A quick check of census records reveal that she married John Beverly in the 1850's. John was born ca 1794/95 and had been previously married (to "Sarah") and had children. John and his first family were listed on the 1850 census in Marion District. They were listed on the 1860 census in Marion just two houses from her brother Shadrack Collins. The oldest child in the house was 8, and the next one was 3. I don't know if the older one belongs to Hannah or to John Beverly's first wife Sarah. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet. John Beverly died between 1870 and 1880, for Hannah was listed as a widow on the 1880 census in Marion County. or 7 May 1827 as shared by Melissa Skipper. He was born in Marion Dist,
SC. He is a proven child of Jonah Collins as named in the 1884 estate
division.

| Sarah Ann Collins was born ca 1832/33 in Marion District, SC, presumably in the Rowell Township area. She was apparently home with Jonah in 1840 (age 5-9, born ca 1830/35), and she was with him in 1850. She was with her widowed mother in 1860 and 1870 and also with her in 1880 both residing with her brother Zachariah Collins. She was apparently still single in 1884 when the estate of her parents were divided. |

Collins was born ca 1835/36 in Marion District, SC,
presumably in the Rowell Township area. He is a proven child of Jonah
Collins as named in the 1884 estate division. He was apparently home
with Jonah in 1840 (age 5-9, born ca 1830/35), and he was with him in
1850 ("Stephen" age 14).
Stephen married Sarah M. --- ca 1855 in Marion District. I don't know her maiden name. They did name a son "Silas White Collins" so that might be a clue. John Collins
was born ca 1836/37 in Marion District, SC, presumably in the Rowell
Township area. He was apparently home with Jonah in 1840, and he was
with him in 1850.
John Collins married Winny Turner between 1850 and ca 1857 in Marion District. She was a daughter of Daniel Turner (c1796) and probably his first wife (for his second wife was John Collins' sister Martha Collins!). I'm not sure if this is the same John or not, but the 1860 census shows a John Collins about the same age with a wife named Lazen (or "Lizer") and two small children, and a Catherine Parham residing with them. This John was just two houses from Thomas L. Collins so possibly in Legette Township. David Collins
was born ca 1838/39 in Marion District, SC, presumably in the Rowell
Township area. He was apparently home with Jonah in 1840, and he was
with him in 1850.
David married Elizabeth --- before 1860. COLLINS DAVID 22 M W FARM LABOR 300 SC 1837/1838 COLLINS ELIZABETH 20 F W SC 1839/1840 COLLINS LUCY 0 F W 9/12 SC 1859/1860 David may be the same person as David C. Collins who served during the Civil War as a Private in Company L, 21st Regiment Infantry, SC Volunteers, and who was wounded at Walthall Junction, May 7, 1864, and died of his wounds on 13 May 1864. ("A History of Marion County, South Carolina", 1902, by W. W. Sellers, Esq, Pages 572-577) According to the estate records of his father Jonah, David's widow married Matthew Ammons after David's death, and that David was survived by children Lucy Collins (wife of Henry F. Collins) and Hamilton Collins (can't find any record of him). I found Matthew Ammons and wife Elizabeth on the 1870 census in Marion County in Moody Township. No Collins children were with her, so they must have been "farmed out" somewhere. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet. Elizabeth
Collins was born ca 1840/41 in Marion District, SC,
presumably in the Rowell Township area. She was with Jonah in 1850, and
she was with her widowed mother in 1860 and 1870 but gone by 1880, so
either married or died by then.
Her father's estate records show that Elizabeth married John Stephens and that she had died by then (1884) leaving one daughter Ann Stephens. I found a widowed John Stephens on the 1880 census, living by himself. However, I found Ann R. Stephens and Archy Stephens living with their uncle Edward B. Collins. Archy was 9, so that shows that John and Elizabeth married between 1870 and 1871. Ann was 6, so that means Elizabeth died sometime between ca 1874 and 1880. Only Ann was named as a surviving child of Elizabeth Collins Stephens, so Archy must have died. The 1880 census record did show he was suffering from "Dropsy". He may have died from that before 1884. |

Zachariah
Collins was born ca 1843/44 in Marion District, SC,
presumably in the Rowell Township area. He was with Jonah in 1850, and
he was with his widowed mother in 1860 and 1870.
He married Threetha A --- ca 1876. They were listed on the 1880 census in Marion County, in Rowell Township. His widowed mother and one of his sisters was residing with them. I didn't find Zachariah in 1900. |
| Peter Collins was born ca 1844/45 in Marion District, SC, presumably in the Rowell Township area. He was with Jonah in 1850, but not found in 1860, so possibly had died by then. He was not named in the 1884 estate division of his parents. |

Edward married Mary Ann --- between 1860 and 1870.
