I (Marty Grant) am a 3rd Great Grandnephew of Joseph Collins.

Joseph Collins was born ca 1809/10 in Marion Dist, SC.

Joseph is a proven son of Jonah Collins (c1774) based on Jonah's estate division.

Joseph was apparently not born yet by the 1810 census, for Jonah had no children listed with him.

Joseph would have been about 10 years old for the 1820 census, so he could have been in either the "under 10" age group (born ca 1810/20) or in the 10-15 age group (born ca 1804/10). Jonah Collins had three apparent sons under 10, one of them was Joseph.

Joseph would have been about 20 years old for the 1830 census. He could have been in the 20-29 age group (born ca 1800/10), or in the 15-19 age group (born ca 1810/15). Jonah Collins had one boy 15-19 in 1830, that is probably Joseph.

Joseph Collins married Susan --- sometime between 1830 and ca 1837, presumably in Marion District. I don't know Susan's maiden name. A clue may be found in her 1880 census entry where she reports that both she and her father were born in South Carolina, but her mother was born in Scotland.

Joseph Collins was listed on the 1840 Marion District, SC census record. He was listed next door to Jonah Collins Jr (his brother), and on the same page as his father Jonah Collins Sr. There was another Joseph Collins listed on the same census, but not nearby, he was listed as "Joseph W. Collins". I'm fairly sure that is the son of William S. Collins (c1792).

Joseph Collins and family were listed on the 1850 census in Marion County. This census showed several names wrong for some reason or another. For example, Susan was listed as "Sarah", Samuel was listed as "Stephen", Shadrack was listed as "Samuel", and Ebenezer was listed as "Edward". This could be a result of the census taker being careless when making the copy of the census to be filed (the census records we use are hand made copies of the originals, and most of the originals were lost years ago). This could also be a result of the census taker getting the data from a neighbor.

Joseph and family were still in Marion for the 1860 census. This time they were listed between Thomas R. Collins (c1814) (his brother) and Stephen Collins (his half brother), Sarah, widow of Jonah Sr was next to Stephen.

For the 1870 census, Joseph and family were in Rowell Township of Marion County, SC. He was just two houses from his step-mother Sarah, widow of Jonah Collins Sr, and he was next door to his brother Jonah Collins Jr.

Joseph Collins died between 1870 and 1880. His widow Susan was listed in Rowell Township for the 1880 census. She was listed as "disabled". ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

I didn't find Susan on the 1900 census, at least not in Marion County.

Children

Joseph and Susan had at least 9 children, as proven by the various census records.

Joseph Benjamin Collins (c1837)

Samuel Collins (c1839)

Jonah J. Collins (c1841)

Robert Collins (c1843)

Shadrack Collins (c1847)

Ebenezer Collins (c1849)

Susan C. Collins (c1852)

Joshua W. Collins (1854)

Henry F. Collins (c1857)

Joseph Benjamin Collins was born ca 1836/37 in Marion District, SC, presumably in the Rowell Township area. He was home apparently home with his parents for the 1840 census (age "under 5", born ca 1835/40). He was home in 1850 ("Benjamin" age 13) and in 1860 ("Benjamin" age 23).

I found a Civil War record for "Benjamin J. Collins" who enlisted as a Private in Gregg's Battery, Co. D, Manigault's Battalion Artillery (A History of Marion County, South Carolina by W.W. Sellers, 1902 page 616).

Benjamin Collins married Jane --- between 1860 and circa 1866. I don't know her maiden name.

They were listed on the 1870 census in Moody Township. This is on the other side of Marion town from Rowell Township, so apparently he moved during the 1860's. His brother Ebenezer Collins was next door.

They were listed on the 1880 census in Legette Township. Interestingly, for their oldest child William, his relationship was listed as "Bastard". I assume this means that he was Benjamin's son out of wedlock, or that he was Jane's son out of wedlock, that one of the two parents were not his natural parent. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

Samuel Collins was born ca 1838/39 in Marion District, SC, presumably in the Rowell Township area. He was apparently home with his parents for the 1840 census (age "under 5", born ca 1835/40), and was home in 1850 ("Stephen" (sic) age 11) and in 1860 ("Samuel" age 21).

I didn't find a Civil War record for Samuel Collins, though there were several listed just by initial, one of which might be him.

Samuel Collins married Treacy --- ca 1868/69. I don't know her maiden name.

They were listed on the 1870 census in Marion Co, SC in Rowell Township. He was next door to his brother Shadrack Collins.

Samuel Collins and family were found in Legette Township for the 1880 census. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

They were still in Legette Township for the 1900 census. This one gave Samuel's birth as November 1834, but that year contradicts all the previous census records. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

Jonah J. Collins was born ca 1840/41 in Marion District, SC, presumably in the Rowell Township area. He was home with his parents for the 1850 ("John" (sic) age 9), 1860 ("Jonah" age 18), 1870 ("Jona" age 29) and 1880 census ("Jonah J." age 40).

The 1880 census listed him as having a "Hemorage", indicating some kind of health problem. I didn't find him on the 1900 census.

Robert Thomas Collins was born 27 Aug 1842 (per tombstone) in Marion District, SC, presumably in the Rowell Township area. He was home with his parents for the 1850 ("Robert" age 7) and 1860 census ("Robert" age 16).

I found a Civil War record for a "R. Collins" who was in Company F, Fourth Regiment Cavalry. He was reported as killed at Trevillian Station, 1863. (A History of Marion County, South Carolina by W.W. Sellers, 1902 page 583).

I don't think the above record is for this Robert Collins. There was another "R. Collins" in Company L, Tenth Regiment Infantry. He was reported wounded at Chickamauga. (A History of Marion County, South Carolina by W.W. Sellers, 1902 page 599).

For the 1870 census, Robert Collins was residing with John M. Collins, son of Sheriff Robert Collins. Gregory Collins was also listed there, Sheriff Robert was Gregory's 1st cousin, but I don't know how Robert T. Collins is related to the rest.

Robert T. Collins married Zilphia A. Collins before 1880. She was a daughter of Stephen T. Collins (c1822) son of John Collins (c1798), son of Thomas Collins (1765/70). Robert and Zilphia were certainly cousins to some degree.

They were listed on the 1880 census in Legette Township, next door to her parents. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

Shadrack Collins was born ca 1846/47 (August 1849 per 1900 census) in Marion District, SC, presumably in the Rowell Township area. He was home with his parents for the 1850 census ("Samuel" (sic) age 3) and 1860 census ("Shadrack" age 15).

For the Civil War, Shadrach Collins, served as a Private in Company L, 21st Regiment Infantry, SC Volunteers. He was discharged Jan 26, 1863 and still living at the time Sellers wrote his book. ("A History of Marion County, South Carolina", 1902, by W. W. Sellers, Esq, Pages 572-577)

Shadrack Collins married Susan M. Baxley between 1860 and 1870. She was a daughter of Williamson Baxley and Catherine ---.

For the 1870 census, they were listed in Rowell Township, next to his brother Samuel Collins.

For the 1880 census, Shadrack was living with his brother Joshua Collins in Legette Township. He was listed as "married", but no wife was listed with him, nor any apparent children. I found a Susan Collins age 37 in Marion Township, living with her parents Williamson and Catherine Baxley. This Susan was listed as "married" but with no husband in the household. The age isn't right to be the same person, but "Suckey" is often used as a nickname for Susan, so this could be her, suggesting she and Shadrack separated for some reason. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

By the time of the 1900 census, Shadrack and Susan were together again, listed in Marion Township. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

Ebenezer Collins was born ca 1849 in Marion District, SC, presumably in the Rowell Township area. He was home with his parents for the 1850 ("Edward" (sic) age 9 months) and 1860 census ("Ebenezer" age 13).

Ebenezer wasn't really old enough to serve during the Civil War, and I found no record of him doing so.

Ebenezer Collins married Augusta --- before 1869. I don't know her maiden name.

They were listed on the 1870 census in Moody Township, next to his brother Benjamin, and also next to Winnie Turner Collins (daughter of Daniel Turner), widow of his deceased Uncle John Collins.

Ebenezer and family were still in Moody Township for the 1880 census. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

I didn't find them on the 1900 census.

Susan C. Collins was born ca 1851/52 in Marion District, SC, presumably in the Rowell Township area. She was home with her parents for the 1860 ("Susan" age 8) and 1870 census ("Susan C." age 15). She wasn't home for the 1880 census, so probably had married (or died) by then.

The estate records of her grandfather Jonah Collins show that Susan married Willis Flowers (before 1884). Willis was born ca 1854/55, a son of Williamson Flowers and Elizabeth Marlow. They apparently married between 1870 and ca 1875.

Willis and Susan were listed on the 1880 census in Legette Township next door to Stephen T. Collins and just two houses from her brother Robert T. Collins. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

Apparently, Susan died before 1884, for her children were named as heirs in the estate of Jonah Collins (her grandfather).

Joshua W. Collins was born October 1854 (per 1900 census) in Marion District, SC, presumably in the Rowell Township area. He was home with his parents for the 1860 ("Joshua" age 8) and 1870 census ("Joshua" age 15).

Joshua Collins married Margaret Jane Sawyer ca 1870/73. (Thanks to Terry Britt for her maiden name). Margaret was a daughter of Willis Sawyer and Margaret Wells.

They were listed on the 1880 census in Legette Township. Joshua's brother Shadrack Collins was residing with them. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

Margaret died sometime between 1885 and 1892, for circa 1892 Joshua married Willie M ---. I don't know her maiden name.

They were in Reaves Township, Southern portion for the 1900 census. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

Henry F. Collins was born ca 1856/57 in Marion District, SC, presumably in the Rowell Township area. He was home with his parents for the 1860 ("Henry" age 3), 1870 ("Henry F." age 11) and 1880 census ("Henry F." age 23). I didn't find him on the 1900 census.
