I (Marty Grant) don't know how I'm related to John Collins. I am sure he is somehow related to my ancestor Jonah Collins (c1774).
John Collins was born ca 1797/98 (per 1850 census) in Georgetown District, SC (now Marion Co, SC).
He is a proven son of Thomas Collins (1765/70) as named in the estate records of Thomas Collins (and John was also the Administrator).
W.W. Sellers mentioned John in his book (anything in brackets [...] was added by me):
COLLINS. "... named Thomas and perhaps others, who is the father of John, Solomon, and Samuel, and probably four daughters. Solomon and John married sisters, the sisters of old Captain John Rogers, of the Fork section; and their father, Thomas Collins Jr. married for a second or third wife another sister; thus it appears that the father's wife and wives of his two sons, Solomon and John, were sisters and if they all had offspring by the respective marriages, it would be difficult to tell what relation the children would be to each other.
John Collins, the grandson of old Thomas [John was his son, not grandson], was the father of the late Sheriff Robert Collins, and of his brothers, the late Stephen T. Collins and Samuel Collins; John may have had other sons and, perhaps, daughters, not known to the writer. ... " ("A History of Marion County, South Carolina", 1902, by W. W. Sellers, Esq, Pages 512-516)
There are two very respectable, good citizens now in the Mullins section, of the name of John and Owen Collins, they, perhaps, are sons of Solomon Collins or Samuel; they both have families. Owen has a son, married, who is called "Romney" that his true name is Deuteronomy, a name taken from the Pentateuch, one of the five books of Moses.
Sellers was mistaken when he referred to a Thomas Sr and Jr, and although there was a Thomas Jr, he was not the father of John, Solomon, etc, but their brother.
John Collins would have been about 2 years old by the time of the 1800 census, so he should be enumerated in the "under 10" age group (born ca 1790/1800), and his father Thomas did have one apparent son that age in 1800.
For the 1810 census, John would have been about 12 years old, so he should be enumerated in the age 10-15 grouping (born ca 1794/1800). His father Thomas did have one apparent son that age in 1810.
For the 1820 census, John would have been about 22 years old, so he ought to be enumerated in the 16-25 age group (born ca 1794/1804). His father Thomas did have two apparent sons that age in 1820.
John Collins married Chloe --- before ca 1822. If Sellers can be trusted, then she was a Rogers, and a sister to Captain John Rogers. I have not seen any primary evidence yet proving she was a Rogers, but it could be correct. Sellers work was good, but he did make mistakes, so it is wise not to take everything he wrote as gospel, unless you can find supporting evidence.
There were two men named John Collins listed on the 1830 census in Marion District. One was John J. Collins (c1790), the other this one. Census analysis makes it fairly clear which one was which, however this census was alphabetical, so I can't tell who John's neighbors were, nor what section of the county he was living in. John had an "extra" male with him, aged 20-29 (born ca 1800/10), who could be one of his brothers, or perhaps a brother-in-law. I suspect it was his brother Thomas L. Collins (c1804).

Both John and Chloe must have died in the 1850-60 period, for I did not find them on the 1860 census, though their known children were still in Marion that year. I did not find an Equity or Probate record for them. The 1850 census shows them with no real estate, so they probably didn't have much money or personal property to be divided, so no records were filed (or else I've just missed them).
John and Chloe had several children, based on the various census records. Sellers stated that John was the father of Stephen, Robert and Samuel Collins, and although I've seen no direct evidence proving this, it seems to be correct based on circumstantial evidence.
Stephen T. Collins was born 22 Feb 1822 in Marion Dist, SC. Sellers stated that he was a son of John. He fits, but I've seen no direct proof, but I think it is correct.
Stephen married Margaret Smith. See their own page for additional information.
Robert Collins was born ca 23 Jan 1829 in Marion Dist, SC. Sellers stated that he was a son of John. He fits, but I've seen no direct proof, but I think it is correct.
Robert married Elizabeth ---. See their own page for additional information.
Unknown Daughter (1825/30). John Collins had an apparent daughter this age. She was with him for the 1830 census (aged "under 5", born ca 1825/30) and still home in 1840 (age 10-14, born ca 1825/30), but gone by 1850, so probably married or dead by then.
Samuel Collins was born ca 1829/30 in Marion Dist, SC. Sellers stated that he was a son of John. He fits, but I've seen no direct proof, but I think it is correct.
Samuel married Elizabeth --- (possibly Elizabeth Brown). See their own page for additional information.
Unknown Son (1835/40). John Collins had an apparent son this age. He was with him for the 1840 census (aged "under 5", born ca 1835/40) but gone by 1850, so probably dead by then, or living with another family. He wasn't quite old enough to have married by 1850.
