I (Marty Grant) don't know how (or if) I'm related to the Thomas Collins family. I am sure he is somehow related to my ancestor Jonah Collins (c1774).
Special thanks to Helon Cutler and Jo Dickerson for data shared on this family.
Thomas Collins was born ca 1765/70, possibly in SC, or perhaps in another state. I don't know who his parents might have been. One researcher (Ralph Stokes Collins) suggests that he is a son of Dempsey Collins. I don't know if I agree with that, but it is a possibility.
He was in the Marion County area prior to 1790, but he was not listed on the 1786 Tax list for either Prince George or Prince Frederick Parish.
W. W. Sellers wrote about the Collins family in his book and provided some information that isn't otherwise available, though he also stated some things that are clearly in error. Here is what he said, and I'll comment on it afterwards. Anything in brackets [...] was added by me for clarification:
"COLLINS. Of this scattered an extensive family the writer has not been able to gather sufficient data from which to connect them and to trace their genealogy satisfactorily. The first now known of them were two brothers, 100 or more years ago the two brothers were Thomas and Jonah. Thomas was the progenitor of the Collins about Maiden Down and Mullins. The writer saw old man Thomas, 70 years ago; he lived and died on Maiden Down and Martin Swamp, right at the junction of the latter with the former; he was then past middle life, and, I think, was a Justice of the Peace or Magistrate away back in the '30s, a prominent man in his day; he had family, but do not know who his wife was; he was a great grandfather of the late Sheriff Robert Collins. He had a son, named Thomas and perhaps others, who is the father of John, Solomon, and Samuel [there was no Samuel in this generation], and probably four daughters. Solomon and John married sisters, the sisters of old Captain John Rogers, of the Fork section; and their father, Thomas Collins Jr. married for a second or third wife another sister; thus it appears that the father's wife and wives of his two sons, Solomon and John, were sisters and if they all had offspring by the respective marriages, it would be difficult to tell what relation the children would be to each other. [more written on Thomas's children]. ("A History of Marion County, South Carolina", 1902, by W. W. Sellers, Esq, Pages 512-516)
The Thomas Collins whom Mr. Sellers referred to as Thomas "Jr" was actually Thomas "Sr", and as far as I know, there was no older Thomas in the area. This Thomas Sr (whom he called "Jr") was the father of a younger Thomas (Thomas L. Collins), but Sellers was clearly confused. So keep in mind that when Sellers talks about Thomas "Jr" he really was referring to "Sr".
I don't know the name of Thomas Collins first or second wife, but his third wife was named Mary ---. Contrary to what Sellers said, she does not appear to be a Rogers, at least not by birth, but was a widow of a Mr. Rogers, having a couple of Rogers children by him. As best as I can tell, Thomas's first wife was born ca 1774/84, and died sometime before 1830. I can't be sure if he had two wives prior to Mary, the evidence is just not clear on that subject.
Thomas Collins was listed on the 1790 census in Georgetown District, Prince George Parish. Unfortunately this census was alphabetical, so we can't tell where he lived exactly or who his neighbors were.

On 2 Mar 1790 Thomas Collins (and Shadrach Rogers and Elisha Rogers) witnessed a deed between Goodman Bethea (and wife Mary) to William Lewis. Thomas signed with a mark. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book E page 18 from "Marion County South Carolina Abstracts of Deeds Volume One Books A - E 1800-1811", by Lucille Utley, and Alita White Sutcliffe, 1996 * All other deeds referred to on this page in Books A through E are also from this book).
On 3 Apr 1796 Thomas Collins (and John Cribb) witnessed a deed between Thomas Hux to Thomas Martin. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book C page 218).
Marion District was formed in 1798 (effective 1800) from Georgetown District.
Thomas Collins was listed on the 1800 census in Marion District. He was listed next to Elizabeth Collins, an apparent widow, and I think, a strong possibility to be Thomas' mother. Thomas Collins' wife in 1800 was fairly young, and might not be the same wife he had in 1790. It is possible the oldest woman with him in 1800 (age 16-25, or born ca 1774/84) might be a daughter instead of wife.

On 14 Jan 1803 Dempsey Collins sold 198 acres of land to Thomas Collins, this being part of Dempsey's 300 acre grant dated 23 Nov 1789. Land was on Flat Swamp waters of Catfish Creek. He also sold him 34 acres adjoining the same tract, being part of grant to John Owens. (Deed does not say how it got from John Owens to Dempsey Collins). I think that Dempsey Collins could be Thomas' brother, but I have no direct proof of that. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book C page 69).
On 9 Feb 1804 Stephen Collins sold several cows and bulls, etc to Thomas Collins. Stephen could be a brother of Thomas. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book C page 73).
On 18 Jan 1805 Thomas Collins sold the 198 acres he got from Dempsey Collins to John Collins, including the additional 34 acres. Thomas signed the deed with a mark, and no wife was mentioned. Witnesses were A. Johnson and William Owens. I don't know which John Collins this might have been. I think his son John was too young in 1805, so it might be John J. Collins (c1790). (Marion Co, SC Deed Book C page 70).
On 7 Oct 1805 Thomas Collins sold cows, horses and other items to his "cousin Betsey Owens" and his "cousin Sally Owens" and "cousin William Owens" and "cousin Delila Owens". He mentions some of the property is in possession of his "Uncle Elisha Owens". Thomas signed the deed with a mark, and it was witnessed by David Godbold. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book C page 158).
The above deed requires a little bit of analysis. I'm assuming that the "cousins" are children of Elisha Owens (who was just two houses from Thomas in 1800). I don't know the exact nature of their relationship. Sometimes "cousin" was used in place of "Nephew" or "Niece", but I don't know if that is the case here. For Elisha Owens to be Thomas' Uncle he would have to be either a brother to Thomas' mother, or married to a sister of either Thomas' mother or father, or be a half sibling to one of Thomas's parents. In any event, this is a good clue to family connections.
On 16 Dec 1805 James Martin made a deed to emancipate a negro woman named Rose. He appointed Elias Martin and Thomas Collins to be guardians to make sure his "free will and desire" was carried out. Thomas signed the deed with a mark. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book C page 190).
On 3 Jul 1806 Thomas Collins witnessed a deed between Elisha Owens Jr and his brother William Owens. Thomas signed with a mark. The deed mentions Elisha's father Elisha Owens Sr. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book C page 332).
On 30 Oct 1807 Thomas Collins deeded a negro woman named Dafney to John Ford for $350. Thomas signed with a mark. No wife was mentioned, nor did one sign. Witness was Ann Porter. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book D page 261).
Thomas Collins was listed on the 1810 census in Marion District, SC. He was just four houses from Jonah Collins (c1774), but not very close to any other Collins families. Thomas seems to have a new wife by 1810, though this could be the same one from 1800.

On 22 Mar 1818 Thomas Collins (and David Perritt) witnessed a deed between Elias Martin and Moses Martin for land on Sisters Bay. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book H page 124).
On 6 Oct 1819 Hugh Campbell sold Thomas Collins 100 acres on the south side of Little Peedee. Witnesses included Benjamin Lewis and John Collins. I'm not sure which John Collins, but possibly his son John Collins or John J. Collins. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book I page 112).
On 13 Dec 1819 David Legett sold Thomas Collins a negro girl Cynthia aged about 15 years. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book I page 140).
Thomas Collins was listed on the 1820 census in Marion District, SC. Unfortunately, this census was alphabetical, so we can't determine where he was exactly, or who his neighbors were. It appears that Thomas widowed daughter Elizabeth Cribb had come back home and was with them in 1820. I can't be sure that is who the "extra" family members are, but they fit perfectly.

On 13 Mar 1820 Zachariah L. Phillips sold Thomas Collins a negro boy named Will aged about 10 years old. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book I page 227).
On 14 Mar 1820 Thomas Collins sold a negro girl Sinth age 16 to George Ford, probably the same ("Cynthia") purchased from David Legett in 1819. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book I page 258).
On 20 Mar 1820 Thomas Collins sold 100 acres to Mary Campbell, it being the same land he purchased from Hugh Campbell in 1819. Witnesses were John Collins, QU and John McQuaig. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book I page 228).
On 6 Feb 1822 Abner Legett sold Thomas Collins a negro woman Lyddy and her child Ann. Witnessed by Stephen Collins (son of Thomas probably). (Marion Co, SC Deed Book K page 21).
On 14 Apr 1823 Thomas Collins and Stephen Collins (probably his son) witnessed a deed between Abner Andrews and Solomon Owens. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book K page 136).
Apparently Thomas' second (or first) wife died prior to ca 1828, for around that time Thomas married the widow Mary --- Rogers, who's maiden name we don't know.
Thomas Collins was still in Marion District for the 1830 census. Once again the census was alphabetical, so we can't determine where he was exactly or who his neighbors were.

Thomas Collins was still in Marion District for the 1840 census. For some reason the published version of this census leaves out the first several pages of Marion, and that is where Thomas was listed, so I'll have to get this listing later on.

Thomas Collins died in August 1840. His widow, children and some grandchildren are fairly well documented in the Marion Equity cases for his estate. This is from Equity Roll # 40 (Marion County South Carolina Extracts from Equity Rolls by Lucille Utley).
Mary, widow of Thomas Collins was listed on the 1850 census in Marion District, SC.

I didn't find Mary Collins on the 1860 census, so she may have died or remarried by then. In 1860 I did find a Mary Hill age 60, apparently the wife of William Hill age 77. They had a Jane Collins age 24 with them. The ages and names are a perfect match to be the same people. Back in 1850 William Hill was living alone, age 67 so that fits also.

Apparently William Hill died before 1870, for on the 1870 census, Mary and her daughter Jane were listed together in Reaves Township, both listed under surname of "Hill".

I didn't find either Mary nor Jane in the 1880 census. Mary may have died, and Jane may have married by then.
Thomas Collins and his two (or three) wives had several children, based on the 1790 through 1840 census, and many of them are proven by the 1841 Equity records, though it is possible some were left out of that record, such as those who may have died young, or older but died single.

Unknown Daughter born before 1790. She was with Thomas in 1790 but gone by 1800.
Elizabeth Collins born ca 1790/94. She was with Thomas in 1800. She married Thomas Cribb before 1810. She was with him for the 1810 census. He died ca 1819 and she and her father Thomas Collins were named Administrators of the estate. Elizabeth did not appear on the 1820 census, but someone her age and the age of her three proven daughters were to be found in Thomas Collins household in 1820, and though I can't prove it, I'm reasonably sure it is her.
I don't know where she was for the 1830 census, but the estate records of her father (1841) show she had died before then. Her three daughters were named:
... Robert Burgess and Rebecca his wife, James Wright and Elizabeth his wife, and Mariah, which said Rebecca Burgess, Elizabeth Wright and Mariah are children of Elizabeth Cribb deceased, wife of Thomas Cribb, granddaughters of Thomas Collins not having answers on notice.
These children had apparently all moved away from Marion County before 1850, as I didn't find any of them on the census there.
See the Thomas Cribb page for more information.
John Collins was born ca 1797/98. He was named in the Probate records of his father as an heir and he was the administrator. John married Chloe --- before 1822.
See his page for more information.
Mary Collins was born ca 1800/04 in Marion District, SC, presumably in Reaves Township. She was with Thomas in 1810 and 1820.
She married John Thompson before ca 1823 in Marion District, SC. She was apparently with John Thompson for the 1830 and 1840 census in Marion District, SC. She died November 1841 according to the Equity records for her father Thomas Collins. Her heirs are named in the same record (see above). I don't know if her husband John Thompson remarried or not. I didn't find him on the 1850 census. He had apparently died or moved away by then.
Thomas L. Collins was born ca 1803/04 in Marion District, SC, presumably in Reaves Township. He married Beady --- ca 1831 in Marion District. He was named in the Equity records of his father as an heir. See his own page for additional information on him.
Stephen D. Collins was born ca 1804/05 in Marion District, SC, presumably in Reaves Township. I don't know what his "D" middle initial stands for.
He was apparently home with his parents for the 1810 census (age "under 10", born ca 1800/10), and apparently with them in 1820 (age 10-15, born ca 1804/10).
Stephen married Anna M. --- before 1830 in Marion District. I don't know her maiden name.
They were listed on the 1830 census in Marion District. Unfortunately, this census was alphabetical, so I can't tell who his neighbors were, nor where he was living.

He was named in the Equity records of his father as an heir in the early 1840's.
By ca 1842, Stephen and family had moved to Cumberland Co, NC and was living in the Western Division for the 1850 census. This might be the same area that later became Hoke County (in 1911). ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
I haven't traced him beyond 1850, but I'm told he moved to Robeson Co, NC and remained there. The 1850 census lists Stephen as a Free Will Baptist Preacher. He was in Robeson Co, NC for the 1880 census.
Oliff Collins was born ca 1809/10 in Marion District, SC, presumably in Reaves Township. She was with her father Thomas Collins for the 1810 and 1820 census. Sometime before 1834 she married Alexander Rogers. I didn't find them on the 1830 or 1840 census. By 1850 they were next to her brother Thomas L. Collins in Marion District, SC. I didn't find them in 1860, at least not in Marion.
Solomon Collins was born ca 1813/14 in Marion District, SC, presumably in Reaves Township. He was apparently with his father for the 1820 and 1830 census. He married Jane Rogers before 1834. They were listed on the 1840 and 1850 census in Marion District. See his own page for additional information about him.
Unknown Son was born ca 1820/25 in Marion District, SC, presumably in Reaves Township. He was with Thomas Collins in 1830. It is possible this is his first child by his 2nd (or 3rd) wife Mary (widow of a Mr. Rogers). It is also possible this is a grandson instead, or even a child of Mary's by her previous husband Mr. Rogers. Additional data is needed to be sure.
Beady Collins was born ca 1827/28 in Marion District, SC, presumably in Reaves Township. She was the first known child of Thomas Collins and his 2nd (or 3rd) wife Mary. She was apparently with Thomas in the 1830 census. She married Edward Smith ca 1842. They were listed on the 1850, 1860 and 1870 census in Marion District. He died in the 1870's, and Beady was found on the 1880 census without him.
Sellers mentioned them in the Smith section of his book (anything in brackets [...] was added by me for clarification):
SMITH. "Edward Smith [son of Hugh Godbold Smith] married a Miss Collins, and by her had Redding (called Little Redding), Keene Davis, Ham E. G. and George Smith. This Redding was the father of Edgar, Lide, Dr. Frank and Edward Smith, all in the Mullins region; "Little Reddings" first wife was a Miss Spivey, daughter of Isaac Spivey, in the Bear Swamp and Holmesville section; the Spivey wife died, and he lately married the daughter of Jerry Lambert; "Little Redding" is a prosperous and well-to-do citizen. Of the others of Edward Smiths children and grandchildren by Little Redding the writer can say nothing, for the want of information; he knows Dr. French Smith, at Mullins, a young single man, and is well spoken of as a physician, and no doubt but that he will do well." ("A History of Marion County, South Carolina", 1902, by W. W. Sellers, Esq, Page 495)
Jane Collins was born ca 1834/35 in Marion District, SC, presumably in Reaves Township. She was home with her mother in 1850, 1860 and 1870. In 1860 she was listed as "Idiotic". I didn't find her after 1870.
