[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home]
I (Marty Grant) don't know how I'm related to Solomon Collins. I am sure he is somehow related to my ancestor Jonah Collins (c1774).
Solomon Collins was born ca 1813/14 in Marion Dist, SC.
He is a proven child of Thomas Collins (1765/70), as named in Thomas' estate records.
W.W. Sellers mentioned Solomon in his book (anything in brackets [...] was added by me):
COLLINS. "... Thomas and perhaps others, who is the father of John, Solomon, and Samuel, and probably four daughters. Solomon and John married sisters, the sisters of old Captain John Rogers, of the Fork section; and their father, Thomas Collins Jr. married for a second or third wife another sister; thus it appears that the father's wife and wives of his two sons, Solomon and John, were sisters and if they all had offspring by the respective marriages, it would be difficult to tell what relation the children would be to each other. ...
Don't know ... anything of the children (if he had any ) of Solomon Collins.
There are two very respectable, good citizens now in the Mullins section, of the name of John and Owen Collins, they, perhaps, are sons of Solomon Collins or Samuel; they both have families. Owen has a son, married, who is called "Romney" that his true name is Deuteronomy, a name taken from the Pentateuch, one of the five books of Moses." ("A History of Marion County, South Carolina", 1902, by W. W. Sellers, Esq, Pages 512-516)
Mr. Sellers was correct when he stated John and Owen Collins were sons of Solomon.
For the 1820 census, Solomon would have been about 6 years old, so he ought to be enumerated in the "under 10" age group (born ca 1810/20). His father Thomas did have an apparent son that age in 1820.
For the 1830 census, Solomon would have been about 16 years old, so he should be enumerated in the 15-19 age group (born ca 1810/15). His father had no son in that age group, but did have one in the 10-14 age group (born ca 1815/20), and that is probably him.
Solomon Collins married Jane Rogers ca 1830/34 in Marion Dist, SC. Her maiden name was "Rogers" per Sellers write-up above. According to him, she was a sister of Captain John Rogers. I haven't attempted to verify her maiden name. She was born ca 1813/14 in Marion Dist, SC.
Solomon Collins was listed on the 1840 census in Marion Dist, SC on the same page with his father Thomas Collins, and his brother Thomas Collins (Jr).

Solomon Collins and family were listed on the 1850 census in Marion County on the very first page, in the 2nd household. Fortunately for us, the Marion census taker (Cade Godbold) had the foresight to note the actual county of birth for everyone, instead of just the state (as most other census takers did). Stephen T. Collins was just 5 houses away from Solomon, but I don't know how they are related.

Solomon Collins died between ca 1854 and 1860, presumably in Marion Dist, SC. His widow and children were listed in Marion District, SC on the 1860 census near several other Collins families.

Jane and some of the children were listed in 1870 Marion Co, SC in Reaves Township. There was a Stephen Collins (c1843) living with them. I don't know who that is.

Jane may have died before 1880, for I didn't find her on the 1880 census. Three of her unmarried children were residing together in 1880.
Solomon and Jane had at least 10 children, based on the various census records.
William Collins was born ca 1833/34 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Reaves Township. He was home with his parents for the 1850 census but gone by 1860.
I didn't find him in the 1860 census in Marion. He may have died, or perhaps moved away. There was an apparent widow Rose Collins next to William's mother in the 1860 census. She was the same age as William, and had three small children, all under 10. It is possible she was a widow of William. I'll need further evidence before making that assumption though.
John L. Collins was born 6 August 1836 (per tombstone) in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Reaves Township. He was home with his parents for the 1850 census, and with his widowed mother for the 1860 census.
For the Civil War, "John L. Collins" was a Sergeant Major in Gregg's Battery, Co. D, Manigault's Battalion Artillery (A History of Marion County, South Carolina by W.W. Sellers, page 614).
John married Amanda Martin, daughter of Aaron Martin before ca 1866.
For the 1870 census, John Collins was listed in Reaves Township.

** John L. Collins was listed in Marion Township in 1880 and also in 1900. I don't have those listings transcribed yet.
Owen R. Collins was born 9 February 1839 (per tombstone) in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Reaves Township. He was home with his parents for the 1850 census and with his widowed mother for the 1860 census.
For the Civil War, "Owen R. Collins" was a Private in Gregg's Battery, Co. D, Manigault's Battalion Artillery (A History of Marion County, South Carolina by W.W. Sellers, page 616).
I didn't find Owen R. Collins on the 1870 census in Marion, but he was back for the 1880 census (in Reaves Township), and listed twice that year (making up for missing 1870?). He was in Reaves Township still for the 1900 census. ** I don't have the 1880 or 1900 census records typed up yet.
Gincy Collins was born ca 1839/40 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Reaves Township. She was home with her parents for the 1850 census. She was with her widowed mother in 1860 and 1870. She was residing with her brother Robert Collins on the 1880 census. I have no data on her after that.
Pinkney Collins was born ca 1841/42 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Reaves Township. He was home with his parents for the 1850 census and with his widowed mother for the 1860 census.
I didn't find a Civil War record for Pinkney Collins, nor did I find him in the 1870 census, unless he is the same person living with Jane that year, listed as "Stephen". Stephen was 27, which is nearly a perfect match, but I'm not sure if they are one and the same person. I didn't find Pinkney nor Stephen on the 1880 census.
Gregory Collins was born ca 1843/44 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Reaves Township. He was home with his parents for the 1850 census and with his widowed mother for the 1860 census.
For the Civil War, "Gregory Collins" was a Private in Gregg's Battery, Co. D, Manigault's Battalion Artillery (A History of Marion County, South Carolina by W.W. Sellers, page 616).
For the 1870 census, Gregory Collins was residing with John M. Collins, son of Sheriff Robert Collins. Robert was Gregory's 1st cousin. John was a Printer, and perhaps Gregory was working for him. Robert "F" Collins was also living there. This is probably actually Robert T. Collins son of Joseph Collins (c1810), a cousin, I'm sure, but I don't know to what degree.

Gregory was listed on the 1880 census with wife and family in Reaves Township. ** I don't have this typed up yet.
I didn't find them in 1900.
Elizabeth Collins was born ca 1845/46 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Reaves Township. She was home with her parents for the 1850 census and with her widowed mother in 1860 and 1870. I didn't find her in 1880, so she probably had married or died before then.
Robert Collins was born ca 1847/48 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Reaves Township. He was home with his parents for the 1850 census and with his widowed mother in 1860 and 1870. He was head of household in 1880, with two of his sisters residing with him in Reaves Township. I didn't find him in 1900. ** I don't have the 1880 census record typed up yet.
I'm not totally sure, but I believe this is the same person as R. H. Collins born 21 Feb 1849, died 15 Feb 1910, who is buried in Gapway Cemetery, and was married to Dorah J. F. Owens.
Beady Collins was born ca 1851/52 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Reaves Township. She was listed with her widowed mother on the 1860 census, and in 1870. In 1880 she might be the "Mavis Collins" listed with her brother Robert Collins.
Samuel Collins was born ca 1853/54 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Reaves Township. He was listed with his widowed mother in 1860, but he wasn't with her in 1870.
