I (Marty Grant) don't know how I'm related to Samuel Collins. I am sure he is somehow related to my ancestor Jonah Collins (c1774).
Samuel Collins was born ca 1829/30 in Marion Dist, SC.
According to W.W. Sellers in his History of Marion County, South Carolina, 1902, page 512, Samuel Collins was a son of John Collins, who was a grandson of Thomas Collins. He was mistaken about John being a grandson, he was actually Thomas's son.
If Sellers is correct, (and he seems to be), then Samuel is a son of John Collins (c1798) and Chloe ---. I've not seen any direct evidence proving that Samuel was John's son, but he does fit, and in this case I trust that Sellers was right.
Here is what Sellers wrote about Samuel Collins (page 512-513) (anything in brackets [...] was added by me):
... John Collins, the grand-son of old Thomas, was the father of the late Sheriff Robert Collins, and of his brothers, the late Stephen T. Collins and Samuel Collins ; John may have had other sons and, perhaps, daughters, not known to the writer.
Samuel probably wasn't born yet as of the 1830 census
Samuel would have been about 10 years old by the 1840 census, so he should be enumerated in the 10-14 age group (born ca 1825/30) or in the 5-9 age group (born ca 1830/35). John Collins (c1798) had a son 5-9 and that is probably Samuel..
Samuel Collins married Elizabeth Brown before ca 1850, in Marion Dist, SC. She is a daughter of Richard Brown.
Samuel Collins and family were listed on the 1850 census in Marion County two houses form his parents John and Chloe, and also next door to brother Robert Collins (c1828).

In 1860, Samuel Collins and family were listed in Marion District. They were next door to an apparent widow Rose Collins (relationship unknown), and two houses from Jane, widow of Solomon Collins (Samuel's Uncle).

I was unable to locate Samuel and family on the 1870 census. It appears that both Samuel and Elizabeth died in the 1860's, for that would explain the Richard Brown Probate records (1869) naming a deceased daughter Elizabeth Collins and her children Hamilton, John and Chloe. That leaves out the son "M" and daughter "M" in 1860, but both of those could have been dead by 1869.
Samuel Collins and wife Elizabeth had at least 5 children, as proven by the 1860 census records. See report section below for more information on them. Only Hamilton, Chloe and John were living in 1869. Of those, only Chloe was found on the 1870 census (living with an Aunt).
