I (Marty Grant) am a 3rd Great Grandnephew of Thomas R. Collins.
Thomas R. Collins was born ca 1814/15 (per 1860 census) in Marion District, South Carolina. I don't know what his "R" middle initial stands for, though "Richard" or "Robert" come to mind as possibilities.
Thomas R. Collins is a proven son of Jonah Collins (1774) as named in Court records in 1884-85 concerning Jonah Sr's estate. Thomas was dead by then, but his surviving family was listed in detail.
For the 1820 census, Thomas would have been about 5 years old, so he should be enumerated in the "under 10" age group (born ca 1810/20). Jonah (Sr) did have 3 apparent sons that age with him in 1820.
For the 1830 census, Thomas would have been about 15 years old, so ought to be listed in the 15-19 age group (born ca 1810/15) or in the 10-14 age group (born ca 1815/20). Jonah had two apparent sons 10-14 age in 1830, and one of them was probably Thomas.
Thomas R. Collins married someone (name unknown) sometime between 1830 and ca 1838 in Marion District. I don't know what her given name was, nor her maiden name.
Thomas should have been listed on the 1840 census, but I did not find him listed.
Mrs. Collins died sometime ca 1849 or thereabouts.
Thomas R. Collins married Martha --- sometime between ca 1849 and ca 1853, presumably in Marion District, or wherever he was living then.
Thomas and family should have been listed on the 1850 census, but I have not been able to find him yet.
Thomas and family were back in Marion for the 1860 census. I don't know where he had been back in 1840 and 1850. In 1860 he was next door to his brother Joseph Collins (c1810) and just a few houses from brother Jonah Collins (c1817).

Thomas R. Collins died "during the war" (according to his father's estate records), so he apparently died during the Civil War (1861-1865), though probably not as a soldier considering his age then.
Widow Martha and children were listed on the 1870 census in Marion County in Legette Township, not too close to any other Collins households.

I did not find Martha on the 1880 census, but she was still living as of 1884-85 per Jonah Collins' Estate records. I'm not sure where she was for the 1880 census.
Thomas R. Collins and his first wife had at least six children, and he and Martha, his second wife, had five children. These are proven by the 1860 and 1870 census, and in more detail by the Jonah Collins estate records.
Perry Collins was born ca 1837/38 (per 1860 census) presumably in Marion Dist, SC. He was likely home with his parents for the 1840 and 1850 census, though I don't have those records yet.
Perry was home with his parents for the 1860 census ("Perry" age 22).
For the Civil War, Perry Collins, served as a Private in Company H, Orr's Regiment of Rifles. ("A History of Marion County, South Carolina", 1902, by W. W. Sellers, Esq, Pages 577-581)
According to the Jonah Collins Estate divisions, Perry Collins died in "1866", leaving a widow Elizabeth, but no children. I don't know what Elizabeth's maiden name was, but I believe she is the same Elizabeth I found on the 1870 census in Bethea Township.

According to the Jonah Collins Estate records, Elizabeth later married David Goad (or Goude, Good, etc.) and was living in Williamsburg Co, SC at that time (ca 1884-85). I did not find them on the 1880 census in Marion or Williamsburg County.
Mary Jane Collins was born ca 1841/42 (per 1860 census) presumably in Marion Dist, SC. She was likely home with her parents for the 1850 census, though I don't have that records yet.
Mary was home with her parents for the 1860 census ("Mary J." age 18).
In 1870, Mary was living with the John B. Shackleford family (no known relationship) in Legette Township.

Mary Jane was listed on the 1880 census in Harllesville Township, living by herself. No other Collins were nearby. I'm not sure why she was living in that Township. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
According to the Jonah Collins Estate divisions, Mary Jane Collins died in "1881", leaving only her siblings and their children as heirs.
Sarah Collins was born ca 1844/45 (per 1860 census) presumably in Marion Dist, SC. She was likely home with her parents for the 1850 census, though I don't have that records yet.
Sarah was home with her parents for the 1860 census ("Sarah" age 15).
According to the Jonah Collins Estate records, Sarah married a Mr. Cannon. I searched the 1870 and 1880 census for the identity of her husband, and did not find any matches in 1870, but in 1880 I think I found them, and that census entry explains why I couldn't find Sarah in 1870. It would appear she had married a Mr. Tindall before her marriage to Mr. Cannon, based on several Tindall step children living with them.. Based on this record, I think I can properly outline her family.
Sarah Collins married John Tindall between 1860 and ca 1867 in Marion Dist, SC. John was born ca 1844/45. He might be a son of Solomon Tindall.
John and Sarah were listed on the 1870 census in Wahee Township. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
John Tindall died in the 1870's, probably between 1873 and ca 1877.
Sometime in that same period (ca 1873-77), Sarah married Samuel W. Cannon in Marion County. He had apparently been married before also. I'm not sure where he was from originally, as there were no Cannons in Marion in 1850. He was there in 1860 with his first wife Rebecca, in Brittons Neck Township, and also there in 1870.
They were listed on the 1880 census in Woodberry Township. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
David Collins was born ca 1844/45 (per 1860 census) presumably in Marion Dist, SC. His age makes him a likely twin of Sarah Collins, since both were 15 in 1860, though they could have both been 15 without being twins. He was likely home with parents for the 1850 census, though I don't have that record yet.
David was home with his parents for the 1860 census ("David" age 15).
According to the Jonah Collins Estate records, David died about the same time as his father (so during the Civil War timeframe). No heirs were mentioned, so he must not have ever married.
I found a Civil War record for D. Collins, who served as a Private in Company D, Tenth Regiment Infantry who died "at hospital", this could very well be this David Collins, though I'm not 100% sure.
("A History of Marion County, South Carolina", 1902, by W. W. Sellers, Esq, Pages 626-628)Valentine Collins was born ca 1846/47 (per 1860 census) presumably in Marion Dist, SC. He was likely home with parents for the 1850 census, though I don't have that record yet. Valentine was home with his parents for the 1860 census ("Valentine" age 13).
For the Civil War, Valentine Collins, served as a Private in Company I, Twenty First Regiment.
("A History of Marion County, South Carolina", 1902, by W. W. Sellers, Esq, Pages 605-609)Valentine married Abbie (or Annis) --- before ca 1867 in Marion District. I don't know her maiden name.
They were listed on the 1870 census in Marion Township, not near any other Collins.

They were still in Marion County for the 1880 census, though now in Reaves Township. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
Frances Collins was born ca 1848/49 (per 1860 census) presumably in Marion Dist, SC. She was likely home with parents for the 1850 census, though I don't have that record yet. She was home with her parents for the 1860 census ("Francis" age 11). She was not home with her parents in 1870.
According to the Jonah Collins Estate records, Frances married "Vol. Tyler". I assume this is Valentine Tyler, son of Thomas and Wealthy --- Tyler. They apparently married in the 1860-70 timeframe.
I did not find Valentine and Frances on the 1870 census, at least not in Marion County.
According to the Jonah Collins Estate, Frances Collins Tyler died in 1879, leaving her husband, and an unnamed daughter.
I did not find Valentine Tyler in 1880 in Marion County.
William Collins was born ca 1852/53 (per 1860 census) presumably in Marion Dist, SC. He was home with his parents for the 1860 census ("William" age 7), and still home in 1870 ("William" age 16).
According to the Jonah Collins Estate, William Collins in 1871.
Wesley Collins was born ca 1854/55 (per 1860 census) presumably in Marion Dist, SC. He was home with his parents for the 1860 census ("Wesley" age 5), and still home in 1870 ("Wesley" age 14).
I did not find Wesley in 1880, but he was still living in 1884-85, as named in the Jonah Collins Estate records.
Addison Collins was born ca 1856/57 (per 1860 census) presumably in Marion Dist, SC. He was home with his parents for the 1860 census ("Adison" age 3), and still home in 1870 ("Adderson" age 11).
I did not find Addison in 1880, but he was still living in 1884-85, as named in the Jonah Collins Estate records.
Beedy Collins was born ca 1861/62 (per 1870 census) presumably in Marion Dist, SC. She was home with her parents for the 1870 census ("Beaty" age 8).
I did not find her in 1880, but she was still living in 1884-85, as named in the Jonah Collins Estate records.
Emma Collins was born ca 1863/64 (per 1870 census) presumably in Marion Dist, SC. She was home with her parents for the 1870 census ("Emmer" age 6).
I did not find her in 1880, but she was still living in 1884-85, as named in the Jonah Collins Estate records. That record named her as "Emma Ammons", so she had married a Mr. Ammons by then. I have not yet identified her husband.
