I (Marty Grant) am a 3rd Great Grandnephew of Jonah Collins.

Jonah Collins was born ca 1816/17 (per 1850 census) in Marion District, South Carolina.

Jonah Collins is a proven son of Jonah Collins (1774) as named in Court records in 1884-85 concerning Jonah Sr's estate.

For the 1820 census, Jonah (Jr) would have been about 3 years old, so he should be enumerated in the "under 10" age group (born ca 1810/20). Jonah (Sr) did have 3 apparent sons that age with him in 1820.

For the 1830 census, Jonah (Jr) would have been about 13 years old, so ought to be listed in the 10-14 age group (born ca 1815/20). Jonah (Sr) had two apparent sons that age in 1830.

Jonah Collins married Lincie Ann --- sometime between 1830 and ca 1839 in Marion District. She was born ca 1819/20. I don't know her maiden name.

Jonah Collins "Jr" was in Marion for the 1840 census. He was on the same page with his father, but several households away. Brother Joseph Collins was next to Jonah Jr.

In 1880 they were in Rowell Township still. Several grandchildren were listed with them. I don't know who their parents were though. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

Jonah Collins died 30 Aug 1899 in Marion Co, SC, as per his Probate record. (Probate Roll # 2389, published in "Probate Records, Marion County, South Carolina Volume III", by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, 1985).

Children

Jonah Collins and Lincie Ann had at least thirteen children per the various census records.

James Collins (c1839)

Jonah David Collins (c1841)

Richard Collins (c1843)

Andrew Jackson Collins (c1845)

Tabitha Collins (c1846)

Sarah Collins (c1847)

Mary Collins (c1850)

William Collins (c1852)

Minnie R. Collins (c1854)

Emma E. Collins (c1856)

George W. Collins (c1859)

Catherine Collins (c1861)

Allen Collins (c1862)

James Collins was born ca 1838/39 in Marion Dist, SC. He was apparently home with his parents for the 1840 census (age "under 5", born ca 1835/40), and home in 1850 ("James" age 11), but gone by 1860, so probably married or dead by then.

I did find a James Collins on the 1860 census who was a close age match (he was 22). I don't know for sure if it is this same James or not, but if so, he married M. J. --- between 1850 and ca 1859. They are not listed near any other Collins families in 1860.

I did not find them in 1870 or 1880. There is a Civil War record for a "J. G. Collins" in the same unit as his brothers Jonah and Andrew, who died "at hospital". I haven't been able to identify him, so he could be James.

J. G. Collins, served as a Private in Company L, Tenth Regiment of Infantry. He died "at hospital" (no date given). ("A History of Marion County, South Carolina", 1902, by W. W. Sellers, Esq, Pages 599-602)

Jonah David Collins was born ca 1840/41 in Marion Dist, SC. He was home with his parents for the 1850 census ("David" age 9), and home in 1860 ("Jonah D." age 18).

For the Civil War, J. D. Collins, served as a Private in Company L, Tenth Regiment of Infantry. He died "at hospital" (no date given). ("A History of Marion County, South Carolina", 1902, by W. W. Sellers, Esq, Pages 599-602)

Richard Collins was born ca 1842/43 in Marion Dist, SC. He was home with his parents for the 1860 census ("Richard" age 7), but gone by 1860. I thought he might be dead by then, but a Civil War record exists for a Richard Collins, and this seems to be the only one of proper age. If it is him, then I don't know where he was for the 1860 census.

For the Civil War, Richard Collins, served as a Private in Company L, 21st Regiment Infantry, SC Volunteers. He died in the Union prison at Elmira (NY) in February 1865. ("A History of Marion County, South Carolina", 1902, by W. W. Sellers, Esq, Pages 572-577)

Andrew Jackson Collins was born ca 1844/45 in Marion Dist, SC. He was home with his parents for the 1850 census ("Andrew" age 5), and home in 1860 ("Jackson." age 16).

For the Civil War, A. J. . Collins, served as a Private in Company L, Tenth Regiment of Infantry. He died "at hospital" (no date given). ("A History of Marion County, South Carolina", 1902, by W. W. Sellers, Esq, Pages 599-602)

Tabitha Collins was born ca 1845/46 in Marion Dist, SC. She was home with her parents for the 1850 census ("Tabitha" age 4), and home in 1860 ("Tabitha." age 14), and still home in 1870 ("Tabitha" age 22), but gone by 1880, so probably married or dead by then.

Sarah Collins was born ca 1846/47 in Marion Dist, SC. She was home with her parents for the 1850 census ("Sarah" age 3), and home in 1860 ("Sarah." age 12), but gone by 1870, so probably married or dead by then.

Mary Collins was born ca 1850 in Marion Dist, SC. She was home with her parents for the 1850 census ("Mary" age 4 months), and home in 1860 ("Mary." age 10), but gone by 1870, so probably married or dead by then.

William Collins was born ca 1851/52  in Marion Dist, SC. He was home with parents for the 1860 census ("William" age 8), and home in 1870 ("William." age 17), but gone by 1880, so probably married or dead by then. I did not find him listed in Marion County that year.

Minnie R. Collins was born ca 1853/54  in Marion Dist, SC. She was home with her parents for the 1860 census ("Minnie" age 6), and home in 1870 ("Minnie R." age 14), but gone by 1880, so probably married or dead by then.

Emma E. Collins was born ca 1855/56  in Marion Dist, SC. She was home with her parents for the 1860 census ("Emma" age 4), and home in 1870 ("Emma E." age 12), and still there in 1880 ("Emma E." age 24).

George W. Collins was born ca 1858/59  in Marion Dist, SC. He was home with his parents for the 1860 census ("George" age 1), and home in 1870 ("George W." age 10), and still there in 1880 ("George W." age 20).

Catherine Collins was born ca 1860/61 in Marion Dist, SC. She was home with her parents for the 1870 census ("Catherine" age 9), but not there in 1880. She may have been married or dead by then.

Allen Collins was born ca 1861/62 in Marion Dist, SC. He was home with his parents for the 1870 census ("Allen" age 8), but not there in 1880, nor did I find him listed on the 1880 census. He may have died before then, or just been missed.
