I (Marty Grant) don't know how I'm related to the Jonathan Collins family. I am sure he is somehow related to my ancestor Jonah Collins (c1774).
Special thanks to Jo Dickerson for data shared on this family.
Jonathan Collins was born before 1755, possibly in SC, or perhaps in another state.
I don't know who his parents might have been. He apparently resided near Boggy Branch (waters of Reedy Creek) according to land deeds.
W. W. Sellers mentioned Jonathan in his boo, sort of, though he referred to him as "Jonah", and apparently was a little confused. Here is what he wrote (anything in brackets [...] was added by me for clarification):
"COLLINS. Of this scattered an extensive family the writer has not been able to gather sufficient data from which to connect them and to trace their genealogy satisfactorily. The first now known of them were two brothers, 100 or more years ago the two brothers were Thomas and Jonah. ...
Of the two brothers, old Collins, Thomas and Jonah, the latter became the progenitor of the Collins below Marion and Pee Dee Island Collins; don't know much about them.
There were two or three brothers, descendants of old Jonah, to wit: William, James and Jonah, these were either sons of old Jonah or grandsons. William Collins was the father of Mrs. Valentine Rowell; he may have had other daughters and sons, of whom nothing is known." ("A History of Marion County, South Carolina", 1902, by W. W. Sellers, Esq, Pages 512-516)
Mr. Sellers was correct about James and William being sons of Jonathan, but Jonah was not his son, assuming he is referring to Jonah Collins (c1774).
Jonathan Collins was apparently a Revolutionary War Soldier. I have not seen any of these records yet.
Jonathan married Sarah --- sometime before 1790. I don't know her maiden name.
He was in the Marion County area prior to 1790. He was not listed on the 1786 Tax list for either Prince George or Prince Frederick Parish.
He was listed on the 1790 census in Georgetown District, Prince George Parish. Unfortunately this census was alphabetical, so we can't tell where he lived exactly or who his neighbors were.
1790 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census)
1790 Georgetown Dist, SC Prince George Parish pg 53 Jonathan Collins 1-1-2-0-0 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 16 and Up (before 1774) Jonathan COLLINS (bef 1755) 1 Male(s) under 16 (1774/1790) Son? (1774/90) > gone by 1800 2 Female(s) any age (before 1790) Sarah Collins (1755/74) wife Daughter? (1784/90)
Marion District was formed in 1798 (effective 1800) from Georgetown District.
On 7 Dec 1797 Loftis R. Munnerlin and wife Rachel sold land to Jonathan Collins on the North side of Boggy Branch near Reedy Creek. The acreage was not given. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book A page 156 from "Marion County South Carolina Abstracts of Deeds Volume One Books A - E 1800-1811", by Lucille Utley, and Alita White Sutcliffe, 1996 * All other deeds referred to on this page in Books A through E are also from this book).
Jonathan Collins was listed on the 1800 census in Marion District. He wasn't listed near any other Collins families, but he was listed next door to Loften R. Munnerlyn (who sold him the land in 1797).
1800 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census)
1800 Marion Dist, SC pg 458/802 Jonathan Collins 20001-11010 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 45 & up (before 1755) Jonathan COLLINS (bef 1755) 2 Male(s) 0-9 (1790-1800) James COLLINS (1791/92) son William COLLINS (1799/1800) son 1 Female(s) 26-44 (1755-1774) Sarah Collins (1755/65) wife 1 Female(s) 10-15 (1784-1790) Daughter? (1784/90) 1 Female(s) 0-9 (1790-1800) Daughter? (1794/1800)
On 24 Jan 1801, Jonathan Collins and wife Sarah sold the land deeded to them by Munnerlin (in 1797) to Thomas Cannon Sr. The acreage was not given this time either. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book A page 158).
An analysis of the census would suggest that Jonathan Collins died before 1810, leaving his wife Sarah (who was listed on the census as head of household in 1810). However, in the Probate records for Jonathan Collins (for some reason mixed in with those of Jonah Collins), it states that he died on 4 Dec 1841 leaving no widow. If this is true (and I have no reason to doubt it), where was he hiding in 1810, 1820, 1830 and 1840 census? Is the Sarah listed on the 1810 census not his wife? Could it be that Jonathan left his family behind, and moved somewhere else? I'm not sure how to reconcile all of this. (Thanks to Jo Dickerson for sharing the data found in the Probate rolls)
I don't know where Jonathan was living for the 1810 census. A "Sarah Collins" was listed on the 1810 census in Marion, and it seems to be Jonathan's wife, or at least that is what I think. No other Collins families were close by, but she was listed next door to Ann Munnerlyn, perhaps widow of Loftis (Loftin?) who was their neighbor in 1800.
1810 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census)
1810 Marion Dist, SC pg 80A Sarah Collins 01100-01101 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 16-25 (1784-1794) James COLLINS (1791/92) son 1 Male(s) 10-15 (1794-1800) William COLLINS (1799/1800) son 1 Female(s) 45 & up (before 1765) Sarah Collins (1755/65) wife of Jonathan 1 Female(s) 16-25 (1784-1794) Daughter? (1784/90) 1 Female(s) 10-15 (1794-1800) Daughter? (1794/1800)
Sarah Collins was not found in Marion for the 1820 census. She probably died before that time, or else was living with children for that census and not listed as head of household. I did not find Jonathan Collins on the 1820 census either. There was one in Charleston Dist, SC then (and there in 1810 as well), but I don't know if that is him. There was also one in Anson Co, NC, but he was not old enough.
There was a "Sally Collins" listed on the 1830 Marion census. "Sally" is a common nickname for "Sarah". However, she was listed in the Free Colored columns, so I'm not sure if this is the same Sarah or not. Her age put her birth at ca 1730/1774, and that would fit.
In 1830, one Jonathan Collins was still in Charleston. He did not appear to be old enough to be the same Jonathan from Marion.
In 1840, I didn't find Jonathan either. The one in Charleston was gone, unless he was the one who appeared in Chester District, SC in 1840.
According to a statement dated 27 Oct 1851, made by William Collins (son of Jonathan), Jonathan died on 4 Dec 1841. I don't know if the statement says where Jonathan died. He also said that he only had two surviving children, William Collins and brother James Collins. (This is from the Jonah Collins probate Roll, as shared by Jo Dickerson)
Jonathan and Sarah Collins apparently had several children, based on the 1790, 1800 and 1810 census. Sellers lists James, William and Jonah as sons of old "Jonah" Collins. (Jonah, whom Sellers listed as a son, is not a son of Jonathan). The 1851 statement mentioned above shows that only James and William were surviving as of 1851.
Unknown Son (1774/90) Jonathan Collins had an apparent son this age. He was with Jonathan in 1790 (age "under 16", born ca 1774/90), but gone by 1800.
This is a perfect match for Jonah Collins (c1773/74), and since Sellers claimed that "Jonah" was a son of "old Jonah", and I think this fits fairly well. However, William Collins claimed in 1851 that he and his brother James were Jonathan's only surviving children, and we know Jonah was still alive until ca 1854, so that means that Jonah probably isn't Jonathan's son.
Unknown Daughter (1784/90). Jonathan Collins had an apparent daughter this age. She was with Jonathan in 1790 (no ages given, born before 1790), and 1800 (age 10-15, born ca 1784/90) and with Sarah in 1810 (age 16-25, born ca 1784/94).
James Collins was born ca 1791/92 in Georgetown District, (now Marion County), SC. He is a proven son of Jonathan as named in his own 1851 statement. Sellers also said he was a son of "Jonah" (meaning Jonathan, I think).
James married Mary Jane ---. See their own page for additional information.
Unknown Daughter (1794/1800). Jonathan Collins had an apparent daughter this age. She was with Jonathan in 1800 (age "under 10", born ca 1790/1800), and with Sarah in 1810 (age 10-15, born ca 1794/1800).
William Collins was born ca 1799/1800 in Marion District, SC. He is a proven son of Jonathan as named in James' 1851 statement. Sellers also said he was a son of "Jonah" (meaning Jonathan, I think).
William married Alice ---. See their own page for additional information.
