I (Marty Grant) don't know how I'm related to William Collins. I am sure he is somehow related to my ancestor Jonah Collins (c1774).
William Collins was born ca 1799/1800 in Marion Dist, SC. He is a proven son of Jonathan Collins (bef 1755) as named in Jonathan's probate records (mixed in with Jonah Collins' records)
W. W. Sellers mentioned William in his book. Here is what he wrote (anything in brackets [...] was added by me for clarification):
COLLINS. "... Of the two brothers, old Collins, Thomas and Jonah, the latter became the progenitor of the Collins below Marion and Pee Dee Island Collins; don't know much about them.
There were two or three brothers, descendants of old Jonah, to wit: William, James and Jonah, these were either sons of old Jonah or grandsons. William Collins was the father of Mrs. Valentine Rowell; he may have had other daughters and sons, of whom nothing is known." ("A History of Marion County, South Carolina", 1902, by W. W. Sellers, Esq, Pages 512-516)
For the 1800 census, assuming William was born yet, he would have been under 1 year old, so he should have been enumerated in the "under 10" age group (born ca 1790/1800). Jonathan Collins did have two apparent sons that age with him.
For the 1810 census, William would have been about 10 years old, so he should be enumerated in the 10-15 age group (born ca 1794/1804). His mother Sarah was listed with one apparent son that age in 1810.
I did not find William Collins on the 1820 census.
William Collins married Alice (or "Elsey") Phillips before ca 1825 in Marion Dist, SC. Sellers mentioned an Elsey Phillips who married a William Collins. I'm not totally sure, but it seems like he was referring to this same couple. "Elsey" and "Alice" are often used interchangeably. Here is what he said about them in the Philips section of his book (anything in brackets [...] was added by me for clarification):
PHILIPS. "Elsy [Philips, daughter of Isaac and Miss Eagarton] married William Collins." ("A History of Marion County, South Carolina", 1902, by W. W. Sellers, Esq, page 465)
The Estate records for Isaac Collins (died 1816) prove that William Collins was an heir, though Elsey was not mentioned by name. The first two records (1816 and 1820) do not mention any heirs, but the third one (1826) names Isaac's heirs. One of the records show that Isaac's widow was also named Alsey. (Probate Roll # 636, 636A, 636B, published in "Probate Records, Marion County, South Carolina Volume Two", by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, 1985).
There were two William Collins listed on the 1830 census in Marion Dist, SC. One was William S. Collins (c1792), the other was this William. An older man was living there also, whom I believe is his brother James Collins (c1792). This census was alphabetical, so I can't tell where they were living, nor who their neighbors were.

William was listed on the 1840 Marion Dist, SC census. It would appear that brother James (or someone his age) was still with William.

Apparently William's wife Alice died before 1860, and William was remarried by then to Frances ---. They were listed on the 1860 census in Marion District near many other Collins families.

William Collins died 9 Mar 1865 (per Probate records) in Marion Dist, SC.
Shortly after his death, his widow Frances married Levi Legette son of Levi Legette and Zilpha Evans.
They were listed on the 1870 census in Marion, in Legette Township.

They were still in Legette for the 1880 census. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
William and Alice Collins had several children according to the 1830 through 1860 census records. A probate record names his children. (Probate Roll # 1291, published in "Probate Records, Marion County, South Carolina Volume Two", by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, 1985).
Mary F. Collins was born 7 Aug 1826 (per tombstone) in Marion Dist, SC. She was with her parents for the 1830 census (age "under 5", born ca 1825/30), and still home in 1840 (age 10-14, born ca 1825/30)., but gone by 1850, so probably married (or died) by then.
William Collins' 1865 probate record show that Mary F. Collins married Volentine Rowell. They married sometime prior to ca 1848.
They were listed on the 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 census in Marion County. ** I don't have these entries typed up yet.
Sellers mentioned them in the Rowell section of his book:
ROWELL. "Valentine Rowell, eighty-two years of age, son of David Rowell, Sr., married Mary Collins, daughter of William Collins; they have five children, four sons and one daughter the sons are William David, Alexander Valentine, Robert Charles and Joseph; the daughter is Alice Rebecca. William David, the eldest son, married Miss Annis Dozier; they have four children, three sons and one daughter; the sons are Claudius, William and Benjamin; the daughter, named Mary, married Boyd Shelly; no offspring. Alexander Valentine married Miss Laura Wall; they have four children, Willie, Arthur and Maxcy, sons, and one daughter, Mamie. Robert Charles married Miss Simpson Wall; they have eight children, two sons and six daughters, none of them married. Joseph married Miss Sallie Keever; they have ten children, six sons and four daughters; the sons are Joseph, Keever, Archie, Bruce, Grady and David Oscar; the daughters are Alice, Ellen, Eva and Claranone married. Old man Valentine Rowells only daughter, Alice, is unmarried, and lives with her parents." ("A History of Marion County, South Carolina", 1902, by W. W. Sellers, Esq, Page 469-470)
Ann Eliza Collins born ca 1828/29 in Marion Dist, SC. She was with her parents for the 1830 census (age "under 5", born ca 1825/30), and still home in 1840 (age 10-14, born ca 1825/30)., but gone by 1850, so probably married (or died) by then.
William Collins' 1865 probate record show that Ann E. Collins married Henry A. Gasque. They married sometime prior to ca 1850.
They were listed on the 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 census in Marion County. ** I don't have these entries typed up yet.
Sellers mentioned this family in his book in the Gasque family section (anything in brackets [...] was added by me for clarification):
GASQUE. "Henry A. [Gasque] married a Miss Collins, and had two children, daughters. Francis married Calvin Lee;. The other, Sally, is yet unmarried; the father, Henry A. Gasque, Court caller for years, like his father, Absalom; he was a capital man and law-abiding citizen." ("A History of Marion County, South Carolina", 1902, by W. W. Sellers, Esq, page 375)
Thomas Collins was born ca 1830/31 in Marion District, SC, presumably in the area that later became Legette Township in the area called Pee Dee Islands (north and east of Ariel Cross Roads). Thomas was apparently with his parents for the 1840 census (age 5-9, born ca 1830/35), and definitely with them in 1850 ("Thomas" age 19).
Thomas Collins married Martha Wall before ca 1855 in Marion District, SC. She was a daughter of Thomas T. Wall and Mary ---.
They were listed next door to his parents on the 1860 census.
1860 MARION DIST, SC Page 135 House/Family # 2099/2069 -- MARION Twp MARION P.O. COLLINS THOMAS 28 M W FARMER 300 300 SC 1831/1832 COLLINS MARTHA 27 F W SC 1832/1833 COLLINS MARY 5 F W SC 1854/1855 COLLINS THOMAS B 3 M W SC 1856/1857
I found a Civil War record which I believe is for this Thomas Collins. A "Thomas Collins" was listed in the company of militia last called into service. This company was mainly made of those who were too young at the beginning of the war or too old or who didn't enlist for some other reason (disability, etc.). (A History of Marion County, South Carolina by W.W. Sellers, 1902 page 645).
Thomas apparently died before 1865, for his father's Probate record of that year stated he was dead, and named his children Mary H. and Thomas W. Collins.
Sometime before 1870, his widow Martha married Benjamin G. Woodberry.
They were listed on the 1870 census in Legette Township.
1870 MARION CO, SC Page 154 House/Family # 263/ 263--LEGETTE Twp MARION CH P.O. WOODBERRY BENJAMIN G 22 M W FARMER 180 SC 1847/1848 WOODBERRY MARTHA 37 F W SC 1832/1833 COLLINS MARY H 14 F W AT HOME SC 1855/1856 COLLINS WESLEY T 12 M W SC 1857/1858
The Woodberrys were listed on the 1880 census in Legette Township. "William L. Collins" age 21 was there, listed as stepson, but that must be Wesley Thomas Collins, and either transcribed wrong, or the census taker got it wrong. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
Sarah E. Collins was born ca 1832/33 in Marion District, SC, presumably in the area that later became Legette Township in the area called Pee Dee Islands (north and east of Ariel Cross Roads). Sarah was apparently with her parents for the 1840 census (age 5-9, born ca 1830/35), and definitely with them in 1850 ("Sarah" age 17), and 1860. ("Sarah E." age 24). She was named in the 1865 probate record of her father as "Sarah E. Collins", so still unmarried then.
In 1870 I found Sarah's sister Emma Collins living with a married Sarah E. Jordan age 30, and I think that could be this same person, though the age isn't an exact match. If that is her, then Sarah E. Collins married John J. Jordan between 1860 and 1870. That Sarah E. Jordan was only 38 on the 1880 census (Legette Township) so her age still doesn't match. However it could still be the same person. More research is needed to be sure.
Unknown Son (1835/40). William Collins had an apparent son this age with him on the 1840 census (age "under 5", born ca 1835/40), but he was not home in 1850, so possibly dead by then. He was not named in the 1865 Probate records.
Joseph Collins was born ca 1838/39 in Marion District, SC, presumably in the area that later became Legette Township in the area called Pee Dee Islands (north and east of Ariel Cross Roads). Joseph was apparently with his parents for the 1840 census (age "under 5", born ca 1835/40), and definitely with them in 1850 ("Joseph" age 11).
He was not with the family in 1860, and I didn't find him elsewhere in Marion, suggesting he either moved away or had died before 1860. He was not listed in the 1865 Probate records of his father, so he must have been dead by then.
Jane A. Collins was born ca 1840/41 in Marion District, SC, presumably in the area that later became Legette Township in the area called Pee Dee Islands (north and east of Ariel Cross Roads). Jane was with her parents for the 1850 census, but gone by 1860, so she probably married by then. In her father's 1865 Estate records she was listed as Jane A. Williamson, so she must have married a Mr. Williamson before then.
I checked the 1860 census, and found a Jane A. Williamson, wife of D. R. Williamson. This Jane was 19, so the perfect age to be this same Jane. Sellers confirms this in his book in the Williamson section (anything in brackets [...] was added by me for clarification):
WILLIAMSON. "David R. Williamson [son of Joseph and Emma Wise Williamson] married Jane A. Collins, daughter of William Collins, and to them were born three children, one son and two daughters, named as follows: Alice, David C. and Adra." ("A History of Marion County, South Carolina", 1902, by W. W. Sellers, Esq, page 430)
David R. Williamson was born ca 1837/38 in Marion District, son of Joseph Williamson and Emma Wise. He married Jane A. Collins ca 1850-60, probably close to 1860, for they had no children as of 1860.
They were listed on the 1860 census in Marion District. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
David R. Williamson died in the Civil War in 1863 at Wilmington (North Carolina, presumably). ("A History of Marion County, South Carolina", 1902, by W. W. Sellers, Esq, Page 577)
Jane apparently married Robert C. Martin before ca 1869.
Robert and Jane and her Williamson children, and one Martin child were listed on the 1870 census in Legette Township. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
Robert and Jane were still in Marion for the 1880 census, but over in Reaves Township. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
Martha E. Collins was born ca 1842/43 in Marion District, SC, presumably in the area that later became Legette Township in the area called Pee Dee Islands (north and east of Ariel Cross Roads). Martha was with her parents for the 1850 and 1860 census, but gone by 1870, so she probably had married (or died) by then.
Julia Ann V. Collins was born ca 1844/45 in Marion District, SC, presumably in the area that later became Legette Township in the area called Pee Dee Islands (north and east of Ariel Cross Roads). Julia Ann was with her parents for the 1850 (listed as "Anna") and 1860 (listed as "Julia") census.
In 1870 she was with her sister Ann Eliza Collins Gasque.

I didn't find her in 1880, so probably married or dead by then.
Emma Collins was born ca 1848/49 in Marion District, SC, presumably in the area that later became Legette Township in the area called Pee Dee Islands (north and east of Ariel Cross Roads). Emma was with her parents for the 1850 and 1860 census. She was found on the 1870 census living with John J. Jordan and Sarah E. Jordan (possibly Emma's sister Sarah E. Collins).

I didn't find Emma Collins on the 1880 census, so she had probably married (or died) by then.
Sellers mentioned that Stephen Fowler married one of William's daughters. A check of the census reveals that it was Emma, and that they married before ca 1879. They are listed on the 1880 census in Reaves Township. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
Here is what Sellers wrote about them in the Fowler section of his book:
FOWLER. "Stephen Fowler married a Miss Collins, daughter of William Collins and a sister of Valentine Rowells wife anad has a family of sons and daughters, the oldest son grown." ("A History of Marion County, South Carolina", 1902, by W. W. Sellers, Esq, Page 483)
Amanda F. Collins was born ca 1862/63 in Marion District, SC. She was listed on the 1870 census with her mother and step-father (Levi Legette) ("Amanda Collins" age 7), and in 1880 she was next door to her step-father, living with Woodward Manning (c1809), relationship unknown ("Amanda Collins" age 16).
