I (Marty Grant) don't know how (or if) I'm related to John Collins. I am sure he is somehow related to my ancestor Jonah Collins (c1774).
John Collins was born ca 1810/20 (per 1840 census), presumably in Marion Dist, SC.
I don't know much about this John Collins. The only record I have for him (so far) is his 1840 census entry. This isn't much to go on. He was probably closely related to the other Marion County Collins families, but I don't know where he belongs exactly.
For the 1820 census, John would probably have been enumerated in the "under 10" age group (born ca 1810/20). Of the several Collins listed in Marion in 1820, only William S. Collins (c1792) seems to be a suspect. There were others with sons that age, but they are all already identified. William S. Collins had four sons in that age group in 1820. One of them could be this John Collins.
For the 1830 census, John Collins could be enumerated in either the 15-19 age group (born ca 1810/15) or in the 10-14 age group (born ca 1815/20), depending on his exact age. Once again, William S. Collins (c1792) seems to be the prime suspect. He had one son 15-19, and two 10-14, none of which are positively identified.
John Collins married someone (name unknown) sometime between 1830 and ca 1840, presumably in Marion District. I don't know his wife's name.
John Collins was listed on the 1840 Marion District, SC census. He was not listed near any other Collins families. Based on some of his neighbors (William Keefe and Archibald Campbell, particularly), I think John Collins was living in what later became Cains Township.
1840 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census)

I did not find John Collins on the 1850 census in Marion County. I suppose he moved away somewhere.
* It is very possible that this is John Collins (c1819) who was in neighboring Williamsburg District in 1850, but not there back in 1840.
John and wife had two apparent children with them for the 1840 census.
Unknown Son (1835/40)
Unknown Daughter (1835/40)
