I (Marty Grant) don't know how I'm related to Jonah E. Collins. I am sure he is somehow related to my ancestor Jonah Collins (c1774).
Jonah E. Collins was born ca 1811/12 (per 1850 census) in South Carolina. I'm not sure, but I suspect he was born in Marion District, South Carolina. He lived in neighboring Horry, but there were no Collins there prior to his arrival in the 1830's (as far as I know of, anyway).
I don't know who Jonah's parents were. If he was from neighboring Marion County, as I suspect, then there are a couple of suspects, as census analysis will show. See below for more on that.
For the 1820 census, Jonah would have been about 8 years old, so he should be enumerated in the "under 10" age group (born ca 1810/20). There were no Collins in Horry that year. In Marion there were several Collins, but only one who had an apparent son that age (who isn't already positively identified), and that was William S. Collins (c1792).
For the 1830 census, Jonah would have been about 18 years old, so he ought to be listed in the 15-19 age group (born ca 1810/15). There were no Collins in Horry that year. In neighboring Marion District, there were several Collins, but only William S. Collins (c1792) had an apparent son that age with him that year (there were others, but they are positively identified).
Based only on census analysis, I'd say William S. Collins (c1792) is the best candidate to be Jonah's father, but more evidence is needed before I can say that with any authority.
Jonah E. Collins married Elizabeth --- before ca 1836, possibly in Horry District. I don't know her maiden name.
They were listed on the 1840 census in Horry District. They were the only Collins family listed there that year.

Jonah E. Collins died in the 1860-70 time period, for Elizabeth was listed on the 1870 census without him, an apparent widow.
Elizabeth was residing with her son Jonah Collins for the 1870 census in Socastee Township of Horry County.

Elizabeth may have died or remarried in the 1870's, for I did not find her on the 1880 census in Horry (or Marion). I did find her son Claudius Collins still in Horry, but I didn't find her other children.
Jonah and Elizabeth had four children per the 1840, 1850, 1860 and 1870 census records. Of these, I only have additional data on Claudius, who was still in Horry as of 1880. See the register report for what little I know.
