I (Marty Grant) am a 3rd Great Grandnephew of Shadrack Collins.
Shadrack Collins was born ca 1824/25 (per the 1860, 1870 and 1880 census) in Marion Dist, SC. His birth date conflicts with his brother Joshua (unless they were twins, which estate records do not allow, for Joshua is listed as being from the first marriage, and Shadrack from the second), though I only have one record (1850 census) to base Joshua's approximate birth date on. Someone gave me an "1827" birth date for Shadrack, but that doesn't agree with any of his census entries, but could still be correct.
Shadrack may have been named for the elder Shadrack Collins, relationship unknown, though possibly an Uncle.
Shadrack Collins is a proven son Jonah Collins (c1774) and Sarah --- as named in the Estate records of Jonah.
W. W. Sellers mentioned Shadrack in his book. Here is what he wrote (anything in brackets [...] was added by me):
COLLINS. "... The late Shadrach Collins, of Pee Dee Islands, the great fishermen, the man that in late years supplied the Marion market with Little Pee Dee Bream and other fish, belonged to this branch of the Collins family. Shadrach acquired the distinction or Sobriquet as being president of the ugly club; he was not a handsome man, but a genial, good-natured one; always pleasant and in a good humor; ambitious only to live and to let live, did not want much of this worlds goods. In the contest for the presidency of the ugly club, some 25 or 30 years ago, Shadrach was beaten by man by the name of Powell, of West Marion; but Powell did not live long, and upon his demise Shadrack came in without opposition, and enjoyed his honors till his death, a few years ago. Under an unseemly exterior was a kind, good heart; he thought no evil and did none and was respected by all who knew him." ("A History of Marion County, South Carolina", 1902, by W. W. Sellers, Esq, Pages 512-516)
Shadrack was apparently home with his parents for the 1830 census, aged "under 5" (born ca 1825/30), and apparently home with them in 1840 also, age 10-14 (born ca 1825/30).
Shadrack married Amelia Jane --- sometime before ca 1849 in Marion District. I don't have any proof for this, but another researcher told me her maiden name was Beverly. This could be true, as Shadrack's sister Hannah married John Beverly, who could easily be Amelia's father (though I don't know that), for he had been married prior to his marriage to Hannah, and was much older than her.
Shadrack Collins and family were listed on the 1850 census in Marion County, not too near any other Collins families.

Shadrack and family were listed on the 1860 census in Marion, again not too close to any other Collins families.

For the Civil War, Shade Collins, served as a Private in Company of Militia Last called into Service (mainly being those too old or too young to serve under normal conditions). Shadrack was too old to be a regular soldier (under the rules at the time).
("A History of Marion County, South Carolina", 1902, by W. W. Sellers, Esq, Pages 644-646)They were listed on the 1870 census in Legette Township. Mary Beverly, age 5 was living with them, perhaps a niece.

They were still in Legette Township for the 1880 census. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
Shadrack and Amelia had at least four children per the various census records.
