The author (Marty Grant) is not related to David E. Crawford as far as can be determined. David E. Crawford was born ca 1800/01 per age of 59 on the 1860 census. He was born in South Carolina, though perhaps not in the Horry County region. I have not been able to determine who David's parents were. A Thomas Crawford seems to be the only likely suspect so far. I have not done an exhaustive search of the records, so the answer may be out there somewhere. I believe him to be a brother to Arthur H. Crawford (1799) mainly because David named one of his sons "Arthur H." and they were the only two Crawford families in Horry at the time. David should have been home with his parents for the 1810 census, aged about 9 so he should have been in the under 10 age group (not listed by name though.). There were no Crawfords in Horry at all in 1810. There was a Thomas Cranford listed though and that is probably a typo for I've found other records showing him as a Crawford. Thomas had 3 boys aged 10-15, and although that is slightly too old for David, it could still be him. David should have been home with his parents for the 1820 census, aged about 19 so he should have been in the 16 and up but under 26 age group. There were no Crawfords in Horry at all in 1820. For the 1830 census, I believe that David was living with his brother Arthur in Horry. Arthur was listed as head of household and there were two males listed, one aged 30-39 (which would be Arthur who was about 31) and one aged 20-29, which could be David who would have been about 29 then. There was a female aged 20-29 (Arthur's wife, probably) and a female aged 60-69, who could be David and Arthur's mother, or perhaps not. It could just as easily be Arthur's mother-in-law. I don't know her maiden name. David was listed on the 1840 census in Horry District. Crawford was listed on the 1845 Horry District Land Tax List with 488 acres. [Horry County Historical Society Online http://www.hchsonline.org/ ] They were still in Horry District for the 1850 census. Arthur and family were listed too, but not nearby. David's age is listed as 30 which is wrong, but that is a common census problem.
