I (Marty Grant) am a 1st cousin 6 times removed to Anthony Cribb. That connection is based on some unproven family links though, so it could be wrong.

Anthony Cribb was born 5 Jun 1785 as recorded in the Prince Frederick Winyaw Parish Register. He was born somewhere in old Georgetown District, SC (probably in what is now Georgetown County). He was a son of John Cribb and Ann of Georgetown Dist, SC. This is also proven in the Parish register.

There were two men named Anthony Cribb in Marion Dist, SC at the same time. There was this one (born 1785) and the other Anthony Cribb (c1800) (married Samantha Ford). They were cousins to some degree, possibly 1st cousins. I think I have effectively sorted out their respective records, but there is a chance I have them mixed up in some cases.

Anthony Cribb was apparently home with his parents in Georgetown Dist, SC for the 1790 census, age "under 16" (born 1774/90).

He was apparently home with his parents in 1800 also, age 10-15 (born ca 1784/90).

He married Cortney Runnells on 2 Mar 1807 in Columbus Co, NC. This marriage date and place, and her maiden name are all proven by Anthony's War of 1812 Pension records (WO-7750 and SC21380). (Thanks to Diane Harrison for sharing that pension information)

Cortney Runnells was born ca 1789/90 in SC. I don't know what county. I don't know who her parents were either. There were no Runnells in Georgetown Dist, SC in 1790, nor anywhere else nearby, except for some in Beaufort District. I did not check the NC 1790 census for the surname. They may have been from the border region in what is now Columbus County, NC (where she married Cribb in 1807).

Anthony Cribb was listed on the 1810 census in Georgetown Dist, SC. They apparently had no children yet by this time.

For the War of 1812, Anthony Cribb enlisted in Caleb Stephen's North Carolina Militia. Years later, his widow applied for a pension and the information in there contained a lot of good information on this family (files # WO-7750 and SC21380).

Anthony Cribb was still in Georgetown Dist, SC for the 1820 census. He had 3 extra males in his household this time, one about his age, and one just a little younger. These could be brothers of his, or brothers of Cortney, or hired laborers or other relatives.

By 1830 Anthony Cribb and family had moved to Columbus Co, NC, which could be where Cortney's family was from, since they married in that county. I don't have the enumerations for this listing yet.

By 1840 they had moved to Marion Dist, SC. They apparently lived in the area roughly near where Rowell, Legette and Brittons Neck Townships come together. This was the first instance (on the census anyway) when both Anthony Cribb's were in the same county at the same time. The other Anthony Cribb (ca1800), who married Samantha Ford was listed as Anthony "Jr" for this census, since he was younger.

Anthony Cribb and family were listed in Marion Dist, SC on the 1850 census. He was listed next door to John Cribb who I think was his son. From what I can tell, they were just within the bounds of Brittons Neck Township, near where Rowell and Legette Township come together.

For the 1860 census Anthony and family were still in Marion Dist, SC, and John Cribb was still near them, and they were all listed in Brittons Neck. A young Sarah and Anthony Watson were residing with them. They are probably grand children.

Anthony Cribb was listed on the 1870 census in Brittons Neck Township, but it was so faded and faint, that I couldn't make it out. This listing is from the published version of this census by Margaret Byrd Altman. Apparenty her copy was better than mine, or else she spent more time trying to make it out. Anthony was listed between his sons John Cribb and Thomas Cribb (see below).

Anthony Cribb died 21 Oct 1871 according to the widows Pension application for his War of 1812 service.

I didn't find Cortney Cribb in the 1880 census of Marion Co, SC, so she probably died in the 1870/1880 timeframe also.

Children

Anthony Cribb and Cortney Runnell's children are not all proven. Some are proven by the 1850 census. I have compiled a list based on circumstantial evidence, mainly in that they lived nearby and they also fit into the early census households.

John Cribb (c1812)

Unknown Daughter (1810/20)

Thomas Cribb (c1826)

Ann Cribb (c1829)

Lydia Cribb (c1831)

Milly Cribb (c1832)

John Cribb was born ca 1811/12 in Georgetown Dist, SC. He isn't a proven son of Anthony and Cortney Cribb, but he did live next to (or very near) him in 1840, 1850 and 1860 census records. Anthony did have a son this age per the 1820 census, so he fits. John named one of his daughters "Cortney", which is most likely after his mother. See John's own page for additional information on him.

Unknown Daughter born ca 1810/20 in Georgetown Dist, SC. She was home in 1820. I don't have the 1830 listing yet, but she was gone by 1840, so probably married or dead by then.

Thomas Cribb was born ca 1825/26 in SC, either in Georgetown District, or Marion District. ** He was probably home with his parents in 1830 (I don't have that listing yet). He did seem to be home with his parents in 1840 (age 10-14, born ca 1825/30).

He was home with his parents for the 1850 census, listed as "Thomas" age 24.

Thomas Cribb married Mary Richardson prior to 1860 in Marion Dist, SC. Mary (also known as "Molcy") was born ca 1845/46, a child of Matthew and Sarah (Johnson) Richardson. This relationship is proven by her being with her parents on the 1850 census, and also by the estate records for her grandfather William G. Richardson. (Probate Roll # 1853, published in "Probate Records, Marion County, South Carolina Volume III", by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, 1985, page 171).

Thomas and Mary were listed on the 1860 census in Marion Dist, SC next door to his parents.

For the Civil War, Thomas Cribb enlisted in Company D, 7th Battalion, South Carolina Reserves. (Per Sellers, page 643).

Thomas Cribb was listed next to his father in the 1870 census, in Brittons Neck Township.

I found them in Marion Co, SC in 1880 in Brittons Neck Township, listed next door to John Cribb, a son of Thomas' brother John Cribb. And his brother John himself was just one more household away. On this census, Thomas reports his mother's birth place as "NC", so that leads credence to the theory that Cortney Runnells was from Columbus Co, NC.

I did not find Thomas nor Mary Richardson Cribb on the 1900 census.

Ann Cribb was born ca 1828/29 in SC, either in Georgetown or Marion District. She was home with her parents for the 1850 census. She was gone by 1860, so probably married or died before then.

Lydia Cribb was born ca 1830/31 in SC, either in Georgetown or Marion District.

She was home with her parents for the 1850 census.

Lydia Cribb married James Benjamin Altman on 9 Mar 1854 (as reported in the Marion Star). He was born ca 1832/33 in Marion Dist, SC. I don't know who his parents were.

They were listed on the 1860 census in Marion Dist, SC. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

James Benjamin Altman died on 28 Mar 1862 (per Probate records). (Probate Roll # 1165, published in "Probate Records, Marion County, South Carolina Volume Two", by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, 1985, page 156).

Lydia married a 2nd husband in the 1860-1870 timeframe, William B. Turbeville who was born ca 1804/05, who had been married previously to Penelope Lane daughter of James Lane and Mary Lee. I don't know who this William Turbeville's parents were.

Lydia and William were listed in Brittons Neck Township in 1870 and 1880 census. ** I don't have either of these entries typed up yet.

I did not find either William or Lydia on the 1900 census in Marion Co, SC.

Milly Cribb was born ca 1831/32 in SC, either in Georgetown or Marion District. She married James E. Watson prior to 1847. I didn't know she was a child of Anthony and Cortney's until I put some things together. In 1850 census, James and wife Milly had two children: Sarah Watson, age 3 and James age 1. The 1860 census shows James E. Watson with a new wife, but his two children (from before) were living with Anthony and Cortney Cribb. They were listed as "Sarah Watson" age 13, and "Anthony Watson" age 10. That makes the boy "James Anthony Watson", and later census records show him as "James A. Watson". This seems to strongly suggest that Milly, 1st wife of James E. Watson, was a daughter of Anthony Cribb. In 1870, James A. Watson was with his Aunt Lydia Cribb and her husband William Turbeville (see above).

The above, although circumstantial, seems to show that Milly was indeed a child of Anthony Cribb. As I said already, she married James E. Watson before ca 1847 in Marion Dist, SC. James was born ca 1822/23 in Marion Dist, SC. I don't know who his parents were.

James and Milly were on the 1850 census two houses from her parents.

Milly Cribb Watson apparently died in the 1850/60 timeframe, for James E. Watson was married to a "Sarah M." by 1860, and his and Milly's children were with their grandparents, Anthony and Cortney Cribb.
