I (Marty Grant) am a 1st cousin 6 times removed to Anthony Cribb. That connection is based on some unproven family links though, so it could be wrong.
Special thanks to Ernest Cribb and William Spencer and Dan Fairfax for sharing data on the various descendants of Anthony and Samantha.
Anthony Cribb was born ca 1799/1800 in Marion District, SC. He is a son of Thomas William Cribb and Elizabeth ---. This is proven by two sources. The Diary of Rev. Simeon Campbell records Dempsey, Anthony and others as children of Elizabeth Cribb (who was a widow for many years) and says she was a widow of "John" Cribb. In a deed dated 1827, Elizabeth Cribb deeded land to her son Anthony Cribb, and referred to her "late husband Thomas Cribb". All evidence points to Thomas instead of John. Since he (Thomas) died before Simeon Campbell was born, we can forgive him this mistake.
Apparently, Anthony wasn't born yet at the time of the 1800 census, as he doesn't seem to be home with his parents.
He did seem to be with his widowed mother Elizabeth for the 1810 and 1820 census.
On 20 Nov 1821, Anthony Cribb was named among many others, as debtors to the Estate of John Henry, Deceased. (Marion Co, SC Inventory Book 1827-1836 pg 14 as published in the Pee Dee Queue).
Anthony Cribb received a State Land Grant on 5 Oct 1825 for 237 acres in Marion District. (Per Leonardo Andreas papers).
On 14 Sep 1827 Elizabeth Cribb, widow of Thomas Cribb, gave a deed of gift to "my son Anthony Cribb" to take effect at her death, and for him to take care of her as long as she lived. She gave him all her dower rights to lands that her late husband Thomas Cribb had, being 58 acres between Maiden Down Swamp and Black Swamp (probably should say Buck Swamp). Witnesses were: John Martin and Matthew Martin. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book M page 87).
Sometime prior to 1830, Anthony Cribb married Samantha Ford, a daughter of George Ford.
Anthony Cribb was listed on the 1830 census in Marion Dist, SC. This census was alphabetical, so we can't determine his neighbors, but he was probably in what is now Reaves Township.

On 1 Jan 1833, Anthony Cribb witnessed a deed between his brother Dempsey Cribb to someone named William Cribb (whom I haven't identified so far). (Marion Co, SC Deed Book P page 197).
On 2 Dec 1835 Anthony Cribb and his wife Samantha sold 50 acres of land on Maiden Down Swamp to John Cribb of Georgetown District. I'm not yet sure which John Cribb this was. The land was described as being part of a 200 acre grant to John Cribb Sr in 1768 (this would be Anthony's grandfather). Witnesses included John C. Huggins and Richard Edwards. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book R page 192).
Anthony Cribb was named on the 4 Apr 1837 Estate records of James C. Bellune, as having notes due the estate. (Marion Co, SC Inventory Book 1827-1836 pg 96 as published in the Pee Dee Queue)
Anthony Cribb was listed on the 1840 census in Marion Dist, SC. He was listed as "Jr" to distinguish himself from his cousin Anthony Cribb (who was older than he). He was next door to his brother John Cribb and just 4 houses from his Uncle James Campbell who married Nancy Ann Cribb, probable sister of Anthony's father Thomas Cribb. Anthony's mother Elizabeth Collins Cribb seems to be with them in 1840.

Anthony Cribb and family were listed in Marion Dist, SC on the 1850 census. He had some of the same neighbors that he had in 1840, so he was still in the same area (Maiden Down).

On 13 May 1852 Benjamin Lewis and his wife Abbie of Robeson Co, NC sold 200 acres to Anthony Cribb. The land was described as having belonged to John C. Cribb. Witnesses were David S. Edwards and John W. Moody. Abbie, the wife of Benjamin Lewis, was the widow of Anthony's brother John C. Cribb. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book W page 248).
On 2 Jan 1856 Anthony Cribb sold 200 acres to his brother Dempsey Cribb, land in the Fork of Buck Swamp and Maiden Down. Witnesses include N.C. McDuffie and Evan Lewis (Dempsey's son-in-law). (per Leonardo Andrea papers).
For the 1860 census Anthony Cribb was listed in Marion Dist, SC in the same general area as before (he had the same neighbors still).

Samantha Ford Cribb died on 8 Jun 1869 (per Simeon Campbell) in Marion Co, SC.
Anthony Cribb was not listed on the 1870 census. They had the misfortune of living in that section of Reaves Township that the census taker missed for some reason (many of my relatives in this area were not listed).
Anthony Cribb died 20 Apr 1870 per the Diary of Rev. Simeon Campbell.
W.W. Sellers in his book A History of Marion County, South Carolina by W.W. Sellers, Esq. 1902 gives some information on Anthony Cribb's family in the Ford family section:
Pg 170 "Another daughter [of George Ford] was the wife of Anthony Cribb, and became the mother of our W.T. Cribb and of Dempsy Cribb, Jr.; the latter is dead. W.T. Cribb is a respectable citizen, a brave soldier in the struggle for the "Lost Cause," and so was his brother, George T. Cribb. He lost a leg in the contest, and yet lives...."
Simeon Campbell also listed some data on this family, scattered throughout his diary. I may have missed some references, but will find them eventually.
Children of Anthony Cribb and Samantha Ford are proven by the 1850 and 1860 census records.
William Thomas Cribb was born ca 1832/33 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Reaves Township. He was home with his parents for the 1850 census. He married Mary Jane Harrelson before 1855. (Sellers mentions her on page 256 as having married W.T. Cribb). There seems some evidence she was married to an Altman prior to marrying W.T. Cribb, but the census records are confusing on this. It is possible that he was married twice, to two different women named "Mary". I'm not sure of this though. Sellers said she died childless. That may indicate she was his first wife. Ernest Cribb gave me some data (Sep 1999) in regards to this:
"Descendants of Dempsey (Nieces and Nephews of Wm. Thomas) informed me that Wm. Thomas married only once, to Mary Jane Harrelson. She never married anybody until William Thomas. John L. Altman's Grand Daughter Mary Miller (Nee Ferree) wife of Lawrence B. Miller in Hixon Tn. provided info that she had a son before marriage named John L. Altman. He is seen in various Censuses. I have no info who Evander and Bob Altman are as shown in 1880 354/354 census with Wm. T. and Mary Jane. Also, she had no info on the father of John L. I recently learned that she had passed away. Mary's Mother (Dau of John L.) is Buena Mae Altman who Md. Oscar Randolph Ferree. I also had seen where Sellers says she died childless. He may have been referring to childless during marriage or he may have wanted to protect the name. As you know the Harrelson's were very prominent in that area at that time."
They were listed on the 1860 census in Marion Dist, SC in close proximity to her family, and not real far from his own.

For the Civil War, "W. Thomas Cribb" enlisted in Company F. Gregg's First Regiment SC as a Private on 26 Aug 1861. He was wounded several times and surrendered on Apr 9, 1865 (per Sellers page 586).
The family was listed on the 1870 census in Marion county, in Reaves Township very near some of his brothers. Milly Cribb, living with them in 1870 was his niece, a daughter of his deceased brother Dempsey Cribb (see his writeup below).

William Thomas Cribb was still in Marion for the 1910 census. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
Unknown Daughter born ca 1830/35. Listed with the family in 1840 census, but gone by 1850, so probably married by then, or had died.
Dempsey Cribb was born ca 1836/37 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Reaves Township. He was home with his parents for the 1850 census. He married Jane Martin before 1853. (Sellers mentions her on page 258 as a daughter of John Martin having married Dempsey Cribb Jr). However, Ernest Cribb's data differs from this. Here is what he said:
"I have this Dempsey Md. Jean Hayes (often called Jane). Marion Co. Estate File 1312 refers to Wife and 4 children and says the oldest child is about age 12. Says his wife Jean Hayes abandoned the Children, and without accountability, departed with 2/3 of the personal property left by Dempsey at his death. Dempsey's Grandson Sampson Whitford Cribb Jr, (known as S W) son of Dempsey's son Sampson Whitford Cribb Sr. (known as Samps or Sampson.) confirmed the abandonment, except that Jean took one of the children with her. This must have been Haseltine age about 6 years. Sampson Jr. (still living) related to me that it was learned later that she had moved to Jacksonville Fl and operated a boarding house. Later she moved to Savannah Ga. SamO Cribb, youngest son of Sampson Sr told me that Dempsey died on the 2nd day of the 2nd battle of Manassas in Va. "
In regards to the "Martin" vs. "Hayes" surname for Jane, I have two possible explanations: 1-Sellers was incorrect. 2-He was correct, but after Dempsey Cribb's death, Jane married a Mr. Hayes. I did find Jane Martin, age 11 (born ca 1838/39) in the 1850 census with her grandmother Susan Martin (widow of Matthew Martin). However, this could be a different person entirely. I did find a Jane Hayes (c1842) in the 1850 census with Joseph B. Hayes (c1800) family (she was still with him in 1860), and another Jane Hayes (c1841) with the Ithamer Hayes (c1813) family (still with him in 1860). Also a Jane Hayes (c1838/39) with the William M. Hayes (c1805) family. This last one was the closest in age, and she was no longer with the family in 1860 so that fits as well. Need more info though before I can say if this is her.
Dempsey and Jane were listed on the 1860 census in Marion Dist, SC just two houses from his parents.

For the Civil War, "Dempsey Cribb" enlisted in Company F. Gregg's First Regiment SC as a Private on 26 Aug 1861. He was killed 29 Aug 1862. (per Sellers page 586).
I didn't find his widow listed on the 1870 census in Marion county. They might have been in that section of Reaves Township that was missed, or else she had remarried, and the children were under her new husband's name.
I may have found some of their children: Sampson Cribb. In 1870 he was living with Polly Cribb, a sister of Dempsey (see her writeup below). A Julia Cribb was with the George Tally Cribb family (see his writeup below), and Milly Cribb was with William T. Cribb's family (see above).
Ernest Cribb provided further information on these children:
"Estate File 2136 shows that William Thomas Cribb as Guardian of the 4 Children ---- Samps, M. Haseltine, Julia and Milly Jane. Shows that Milly Jane Md. John Fairfax from Leesville, N. C. in 1884."
Unknown Son born ca 1835/40. Listed with the family in 1840 census, but gone by 1850, so he probably had died by then, as too young to be married.
Emma J. Cribb was born ca 1841/42 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Reaves Township. She was home with her parents for the 1850 census. She married Alexander Martin on 2 Feb 1859 (per Simeon Campbell page 57). They were listed on the 1860 census in Marion Dist, SC. Sellers mentioned them, and said they went to Horry County. I have a death date for her of 14 Jul 1884, as shared by Ernest Cribb. He also gave me the following:
"Emma J. Cribb b 31 Sep 1840 / d 14 Jul 1884. She md Alexander Horry Martin b Dec 1829 / d 30 Dec 1902. They moved to Horry Co. near and between Nichols, S. C. and Duford. She and Husb are buried on the Martin Farm Cemetery on the land they bought when they moved to Horry Co. Dates came from their Grave Stones."
George Tally Cribb was born ca 13 Feb 1842 (per Ernest Cribb) in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Reaves Township. He was home with his parents for the 1850 and 1860 census.
For the Civil War, "George Tally Cribb" enlisted in Company F. Gregg's First Regiment SC as a Private on 1 Aug 1861. He lost a leg at Fredericksburg, VA. (per Sellers page 586).
Here is what Ernest Cribb shared with me regarding Tally Cribb's Civil War service:
"Civil War Archive Records show: the following: 1 Aug. 1861 - Enlisted at age 19 at Marion District in CSA (Confederate States of America) for the duration of the Civil War. Served as Pvt. in Greggs 1st. Reg. Co. E. 1st. Inf. // 13 Dec 1862 - Wounded at Fredericksburg, Va. // 20 Feb 1863 - Sent to Chimborazo Hospital # 5 at Richmond, Va. // 9 Mar 1863 - Transferred from # 5 to Palmyra Hospital # 18 at Richmond, Va. // 4 May 1864 - Wounded again, in the battle of "The Wilderness" in Virginia. // 5 May 1864 - Left leg amputated above the knee. // 15 July 1864 - Furloughed for 60 days. // S. C. Archive Records show that he applied for an "artificial limb" on 10 Apr. 1886. No details were shown as to what kind of limb, or if the request was for a replacement. He is Buried at Millers Methodist Church Cemetery, in the West 1/3, near the N. and S. center. Also, the grave is on a straight line extended in a Southerly direction from the West side (Rear) wall of the Church Building. Millers Church is located about 3 miles N. E. of Mullins, S. C. at the intersection of paved road 309 & 21. My Family members recalled that he was wounded in the Battle of "The Wilderness" in Va. He was transported to the Hospital on a Railroad Flat Car along with many, many other wounded men. After arrival at the Hospital, the Doctors were reviewing the men on the Flat Car to determine the dead from the wounded, in preparation for attending the wounded. His leg wounds must have been severe, and he may have been unconscious, when one Doctor exclaimed aloud -----Here's one that's still alive---- .The Doctors then proceeded to give him treatment that resulted in saving his life and removal of his left leg above the knee. E. T. C. has a copy of The Battle of "The Wilderness" Battle Field Map that shows the line positions of the Rebel Soldiers and the Yankee soldiers for each day of 5, 6 and 7 May 1864. "
Tally Cribb married Sineath Huggins Owens (widow of Lot Owens) on 18 Mar 1869 (per Simeon Campbell, page 58). She was a daughter of Henry Huggins and a Miss Elvington. Henry was a son of John Huggins and Nancy Ann Campbell.

Also, his Death Certificate did not clarify his Birth Date. It is unlikely that he and Cady Ann were Born on the dates shown above."
Mary "Polly" Cribb was born ca 1843/44 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Reaves Township. She was home with her parents for the 1850 and 1860 census. She apparently never married, but had several children born out of wedlock. All of those children were listed with race code of "M" for the 1880 census. See my page on Ethnic origins for more on that subject. She was listed as head of household for the 1870 census.

She was again listed as head of household for the 1880 census. Her age was way off on this one (older than she should be) and this one listed all the children with a race of "M" (Mulatto). Since her age is wrong and the oldest children's ages are also wrong, the race information could be wrong also, though it probably is correct.

Ernest Cribb shared the following regarding Mary "Polly" Cribb:
"Mary (Polly) Cribb ---B 1844 / D 14 Oct 1912. She born, lived and died in the Reeves Twp, Maiden Down Community area, near the intersection of Hwy 917 and 41, North of Mullins, S. C. She is buried in a Cemetery adjacent to and about 400 - 500 Feet from this intersection. This Cemetery is used by people of Mixed Race. No record could be found that she ever Married. She had six (6) Children, 4 boys and 2 girls. Some of the children were of a mixed race, the name of the father is unknown. Most of her children and grand children married spouses of Mixed Race. She apparently lived her life with, around, and about people of Mixed Race. In her elder years, she lived with her son Jenkin (Jenks) until she died."
Thanks to William Spencer for data on Mary's descendants.
Sarah Cribb was born ca 1845/46 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Reaves Township. She was home with her parents for the 1850 census, but gone by 1860. She could have been married by then, or had died.
Tinna Cribb was born ca 1850 (age 2 months in 1850 census) in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Reaves Township. She was home with her parents for the 1850 but gone by 1860. She would have been way too young to have married by then, so she probably died.
