[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home]
I (Marty Grant) am a 1st cousin 6 times removed to John Cribb. That connection is based on some unproven family links though, so it could be wrong.
John Cribb was born ca 1793/1794 in Georgetown District (now Marion), SC. He is a son of Thomas William Cribb and Elizabeth ---. This is proven by one main source. The Diary of Rev. Simeon Campbell records Dempsey, Anthony, John and others as children of Elizabeth Cribb (who was a widow for many years).
Apparently, John was home with his parents for the 1800 census.
He also seemed to be with his widowed mother Elizabeth for the 1810 and 1820 census.
John Cribb was listed on the 1824 Marion Tax list, and charged with 10 cents tax.
In 1825, John Cribb sold 1/2 of 207 acres on Buck Swamp to William Cribb. This land was part of an original grant to Richard Edwards dated 1816. I don't know how John obtained this land. Witnesses were David Edwards and Dempsey Cribb. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book P page 197).
Sometime prior to 1830, John Cribb married Abi ---. She could be an Edwards, but I don't have enough proof of that, just a gut feeling, based on John Cribb selling some land that had belonged to Richard Edwards (how did he get it?). "Abi" might be short for "Abigail".
John Cribb was listed on the 1830 census in Marion Dist, SC. This census was alphabetical, so we can't determine his neighbors, but he was probably in what is now Reaves Township.

John Cribb was listed on the 1840 census in Marion Dist, SC. He was listed as "Sr" to distinguish himself from his younger cousin John Cribb (son of Anthony Cribb Sr). He was next door to his brother Anthony Cribb Jr and just 3 houses from his Uncle James Campbell who married Nancy Ann Cribb, probable sister of John's father Thomas Cribb.

John Cribb and family were listed in Marion Dist, SC on the 1850 census. He had some of the same neighbors that he had in 1840, so he was still in the same area (Maiden Down).

John C. Cribb made his Will on 20 Feb 1851 in Marion Dist, SC, naming his wife Abi Cribb as his only heir. (Probate Roll # 188, published in "Probate Records, Marion County, South Carolina Volume One", by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, 1985, page 134).
John Cribb died 23 Apr 1851 according to the Diary of Rev. Simeon Campbell.
Sometime shortly after John's death, his widow Abi, married Benjamin Lewis and moved to Robeson Co, NC before 13 May 1852. For on that date, Benjamin Lewis and wife Abbie "or Robeson Co, NC" sold 200 acres of land to Anthony Cribb, land that had belonged to "John C. Cribb". (Marion Co, SC Deed Book W page 248).
I have no further information on Benjamin Lewis and Abi.
John Cribb and his wife Abi never had any children, or if they did have any, they died young.
