[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home]
I (Marty Grant) am a 5th Great Grandnephew of Thomas William Cribb. That connection is based on some unproven family links, so it could be wrong.
Thomas William Cribb was born ca 1755/65 in old Craven Co, SC (now Marion Co, SC). In most of the early records he was listed with both names ("Thomas William"), in some cases just "Thomas", and rarely as just "William". It does make it confusing. There were other Thomas Cribbs in the area as well, and I suppose that is why he used his middle name on most records. Middle names were rare in those days, but thankfully it helps to sort out the various Thomas Cribbs.
Thomas William Cribb's parents are not proven, but I suspect he is a brother to my ancestor Nancy Ann Cribb Campbell (1757), wife of John Campbell, mainly because they were closely associated with each other (and their children were also) and they were neighbors, and they were about the same age. I believe (but can not prove) that they are children of John Cribb (1729). Much more research is needed before I can be sure if this is correct or not.
There are not too many Cribb records extant for the early period of Marion County, for this area was Georgetown District from 1769 through 1799, and unfortunately, many of the Georgetown records were destroyed during the Civil War. Some remained however.
In 1769, Thomas William Cribb was deeded two tracts of land. He couldn't have been much older than 14 at this time, but there was no minimum age requirements for acquiring land. However, you had to be "of age" (over 21) to sell property. So these deeds either show him receiving land while fairly young, or else they are for a different Thomas William Cribb.
On 28 Jul 1769, William Harralson of Craven Co, SC sold Thomas William Cribb of same place, 100 acres on the south side of Little Pee Dee River. Witnesses were Alexander Campbell and John Cribb (I suspect this is his father). (Marion Co, SC Deed Book E, page 163, from "Marion County South Carolina Abstracts of Deeds Volume One Books A - E 1800-1811", by Lucille Utley, and Alita White Sutcliffe, 1996)
On the same date (28 Jul 1769), William Harralson and wife Sarah, sold Thomas William Cribb an additional 100 acres (or else the same deed was recorded twice). The land was on the South side of Little Pee Dee River, and the deed had the same witnesses. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book E, page 165, from "Marion County South Carolina Abstracts of Deeds Volume One Books A - E 1800-1811", by Lucille Utley, and Alita White Sutcliffe, 1996)
"Thomas Cribb Jr" was listed on the 1786 tax list for Prince George Parish (Georgetown District), in Captain Haraldson's Company. He was taxed for 100 acres. Thomas "Sr" was probably Thomas Cribb (1731), though he was not listed on the tax list.
On 14 Sep 1787 Thomas Cribb witnessed a deed from John Cribb of Georgetown and Prince George Parish, to Solomon Blackman Jr, for 50 acres on Maiden Down, originally granted to John Cribb, deceased, in 1768. Witnesses were John Cribb, Thomas Cribb and Benjamin Harrelson. I don't know if this is the same Thomas or not, but probably is. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book V, page 206)
Thomas Cribb was listed on a 1788 list of the inhabitants of Little Pee Dee.
Thomas William Cribb married Elizabeth --- sometime prior to ca 1790 in Georgetown Dist, SC (now Marion Co, SC). I don't know her maiden name. She was born ca 1770/75. Some have mistakenly identified her as Elizabeth Collins, who was actually the wife of Thomas Cribb (Jr), probable son of this Thomas William Cribb. (Two Thomas Cribbs were married to women named "Elizabeth", and both of the Thomas' died at roughly the same time, and this has caused this confusion.). I have no strong clues as to her maiden name.
I did not find Thomas William Cribb on the 1790 census, though he should have been listed.
On 30 Jan 1792, Thomas Cribb was deeded 50 acres of land from Solomon Blackman Sr, being 50 acres on Maiden Down, being part of a 200 acre grant to John Cribb in 1768. Witnesses were John Cribb Sr, John Cribb Jr and Benjamin Harrelson. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book V, page 207)
Thomas Cribb was listed on the 1800 census in Marion District, SC. He was listed between Robert Moody Jr and Thomas Pender, and just a few houses from his (probable) brother-in-law John Campbell.

On 10 Sep 1800, Thomas Cribb witnessed a deed from Benjamin Harralson, Esquire, to his daughter Abigail Grice, wife of Jacob Grice. Susanah Harralson also witnessed. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book A, page 42, from "Marion County South Carolina Abstracts of Deeds Volume One Books A - E 1800-1811", by Lucille Utley, and Alita White Sutcliffe, 1996)
Thomas William Cribb died sometime between 1800 and 1810 in Marion Dist, SC. He did not vote in the 1809 election, so he may have been dead by then. To complicate matters, by this time, there were three Thomas Cribbs in Marion. This Thomas William Cribb, his probable son Thomas Cribb, and then the older Thomas Cribb (1731) from neighboring Georgetown moved to Marion in this timeframe.
On 19 Jun 1810, Elizabeth Cribb made suit for letters of administration of Thomas Cribb Jr, deceased, late of Buck Swamp. The fact that he was listed as "Jr" on this record has confused some researchers (me too, for awhile, anyway). I am positive this is the same person as Thomas William Cribb, but he was obviously referred to as "Sr" which was misread as "Jr", or else this is just a problem due to the the records being mixed up with his son. To complicate matters, Thomas William's son Thomas Cribb died in 1819, and his estate records have been mixed up with his fathers. (Probate Roll # 156, published in "Probate Records, Marion County, South Carolina Volume One", by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, 1985, page 122).
On the same date (19 Jun 1810), an inventory of the estate of William Cribb was returned, though in the record, he was referred to as Thomas Cribb, thus proving that this is the same person as Thomas William Cribb. A return was also made on 12 Nov 1819 by John Coleman, William Brown and Solomon Owens. (Marion Co, SC Inventory Book 1827-1836, page 122, as published in the "Pee Dee Queue").
I did not find any official record naming the heirs of Thomas William Cribb (see below for Simeon Campbell's list of his children).
Elizabeth Cribb was listed as head of household on the 1810 census of Marion Dist, SC. She was listed between Nathaniel Miller and Catherine Taylor.

Elizabeth Cribb was listed on the 1811 tax list in Marion Dist, SC, and taxed 10 cents.
Elizabeth Cribb was listed on the 1814 tax list in Marion Dist, SC, and taxed 45 cents.
Elizabeth Cribb was still in Marion Dist, SC for the 1820 census. Unfortunately, this census was alphabetical, so I can't tell who her neighbors were.

Elizabeth Cribb was listed among the many notes in the estate record (1821) for John Henry, a merchant. (Meaning she owed money to him). (Marion Co, SC Inventory Book 1827-1836, page 14, as published in the "Pee Dee Queue").
Elizabeth Cribb was listed on the 1824 tax list in Marion District, and taxed 25 cents.
On 14 Sep 1827, Elizabeth Cribb, widow of Thomas Cribb gave a deed of gift to my son Anthony Cribb to take effect at her death. She also relinquished all her dower rights in the land of her late husband Thomas Cribb, being 85 acres of the "Screven tract" that was purchased from Peter Morrow, between Maiden Down and Black Swamp. Witnesses were John Martin and Matthew Martin. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book M, page 82)
Elizabeth Cribb was listed on the 1830 census in Marion Dist, SC. This census was alphabetical, so I can't tell who her neighbors were.

Elizabeth was not listed on the 1840 census, but someone close to her age was with her son Anthony Cribb, and I strongly believe it is her, but it might not be.
I did not find Elizabeth on the 1850 census, though she should have been listed somewhere in Marion District. She may have been residing with an unknown married daughter, and mistakenly listed under her son-in-laws surname.
Elizabeth Cribb died on 1 Jul 1853 in Marion Dist, SC. This date was given by her nephew Simeon Campbell in his diary. He wrote this about her family (though he mistakenly referred to her late husband as "John", though several other records show she was widow of Thomas William Cribb). A typed copy of this diary is on file at the Marion, SC public library. Rev. Simeon Campbell was born in 1829, and he kept a diary showing births, marriages, and deaths for Marion County residents. The Cribb entry is on page 30 of the typed version. I believe the original is at the Mullins public library, but I am not sure of that.
Thomas William and Elizabeth (---) Cribb had a large number of children per the early census records. Simeon Campbell named only three of their sons in his diary. One other son and daughter are know, but not proven, and there are several daughters who are unproven.
Thomas Cribb was born ca 1784/90 in Georgetown Dist, SC (now Marion Co, SC). I have no direct proof that he is a child of Thomas William Cribb, but it seems very likely to me. Thomas William did have a son this age with him in 1800 (age 10-15, born ca 1784/90). They also lived close by each other. Those are the primary factors for tying them together. Some direct evidence, or stronger circumstantial evidence would be helpful though.
Thomas Cribb (Jr) married Elizabeth Collins between 1800 and 1810 in Marion Dist, SC. Elizabeth was born ca 1790/94, a child of Thomas Collins (1765/70).
Thomas Cribb was listed on the 1810 census between Aaron Martin and an apparent widow, Fereby Runnels.

Thomas Cribb was listed on the 1814 tax list of Marion Dist, SC and taxed 70 cents.
Thomas Cribb died sometime between 1814 and 1819 in Marion Dist, SC. His father had died in 1810, and somehow, their estate records have become combined into one file, causing some minor confusion.
On 29 Oct 1819, a citation was issued to Elizabeth Cribbs and Thomas Collins on the estate of Thomas Cribbs. A few days later on 1 Nov 1819, Letters of administration were granted to Thomas Collins to be Administrator of the estate of Thomas Cribb, deceased. This fact is the key to distinguishing the two mixed up estate records. For Thomas William Cribb's administrator was his widow Elizabeth, while Thomas Cribb (Jr)'s administrator was Thomas Collins. (Marion Co, SC Minutes of the Ordinary 1810-1825).
The estate files were mixed up (as previously mentioned), but an estate sale was held 22 Dec 1819, though I'm not sure whether it was for Sr or Jr. (Probate Roll # 122, published in "Probate Records, Marion County, South Carolina Volume One", by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, 1985, page 122).
The widow Elizabeth Collins Cribb was not listed on the 1820 census, but her father Thomas Collins had someone her age with him in 1820, and someone the ages of her three daughters also. I feel this is probably her. See Thomas Collins' page for more on that entry.
On the 1824 tax list for Marion District was an entry for Thomas Collins for the estate of "Cribb", and taxed $29.29.
Since Thomas and Elizabeth Cribb's children all moved to Dooley Co, GA, it is presumable that she did also. I don't know when this happened, but sometime after 1820. The data about them going to Georgia was shared by several descendants.
Elizabeth Collins Cribb was dead before 12 Jul 1841, for on that date she was listed as deceased in her father's estate records. The same records gave her children: Robert Burgess and wife Rebecca, James Wright and wife Elizabeth, and Mariah. These were listed as children of Elizabeth Cribb, deceased, wife of Thomas Cribb, deceased, and grandchildren of Thomas Collins. (Roll # 40, "Marion County South Carolina Extracts from Equity Rolls", by Lucille Utley)
Unknown Daughter (1784/90). Thomas William Cribb had an apparent daughter this age. She may have been home in 1790, but I did not find them then. She was with him in 1800, age 10-15 (born ca 1784/90). She was gone by 1810, so probably had married, or died by then.
Unknown Daughter (1784/90). Thomas William Cribb had an apparent daughter this age. She may have been home in 1790, but I did not find them then. She was with him in 1800, age 10-15 (born ca 1784/90). She might still be home in 1810. There was one apparent daughter then with Elizabeth Cribb, age 16-25, born ca 1784/94. This could be her, or one of the younger daughters born ca 1790/1800. She was certainly gone by 1820.
Unknown Daughter (1790/94). Thomas William Cribb had an apparent daughter this age. She was with him in 1800, age "under 10", (born ca 1790/1800). She was apparently still home in 1810, age 16-25 (born ca 1784/94), unless that was her older sister, born ca 1784/90. There is no way to know for sure. She was certainly gone by 1820.
Unknown Daughter (1794/1800). Thomas William Cribb had an apparent daughter this age. She was with him in 1800, age "under 10", (born ca 1790/1800). She was still home in 1810, age 10-15, (born ca 1794/1800). She still was at home in 1820, age 16-25 (born ca 1794/1804). She was gone by 1830, so probably married or dead by then.
John C. Cribb was born ca 1793/94 in Georgetown Dist, SC (now Marion Co, SC). Other than being mentioned by Simeon Campbell, I've seen no direct evidence that John was a son of Thomas William Cribb, but it seems very likely to be correct.
John married Abi --- ca 1820/30. See their own page for additional information.
Dempsey Cribb was born ca 1796/97 in Georgetown Dist, SC (now Marion Co, SC). Other than being mentioned by Simeon Campbell, I've seen no direct evidence that Dempsey was a son of Thomas William Cribb, but it seems very likely to be correct.
Dempsey married Nancy Ann Harrelson ca 1820. See their own page for additional information.
Anthony Cribb was born ca 1799/1800 in Marion Dist, SC. Anthony was mentioned by Sellers as a child of Elizabeth Cribb. He was also named in a deed where Anthony was deeded land by his mother Elizabeth. This deed proves their relationship.
Anthony married Samantha Ford ca 1830. See their own page for additional information.
Nancy Ann Cribb was born 5 Oct 1800 (per tombstone) in Marion Dist, SC. I have no direct proof that she is a child of Thomas William Cribb, but she fits fairly well.
She was apparently home with her mother in 1810, age "under 10" (born ca 1800/10), and apparently home in 1820 age 16-25 (born ca 1794/1804).
Nancy married Rev. Richard Edwards before ca 1824. He was born 1 Aug 1803 in Marion Dist, SC son of Richard L. Edwards and Elizabeth Owens.
Richard died on 29 Oct 1869, and Nancy died on 23 Nov 1875, both are buried at the Edwards Cemetery in Marion Co, SC.
See their own page for additional information.
Unknown Daughter (1804/10). Thomas William Cribb had an apparent daughter this age. She was with Elizabeth in 1810, age "under 10", (born ca 1800/10). She was still home in 1820, age 10-15, (born ca 1800/04). She was gone by 1830, so probably married or dead by then.
Unknown Daughter (1804/10). Thomas William Cribb had an apparent daughter this age. She was with Elizabeth in 1810, age "under 10", (born ca 1800/10). She was still home in 1820, age 10-15, (born ca 1800/04). She was still home in 1830, age 20-29 (born ca 1800/10). She was gone by 1840, so probably married or dead by then.
Unknown Daughter (c1810). Thomas William Cribb had an apparent daughter this age. She was with Elizabeth in 1820, age 10-15, (born ca 1810/15). She was still home in 1830, age 15-19 (born ca 1810/15). She was gone by 1840, so probably married or dead by then.
