John Cribb (living in 1717) and Elizabeth --- of Prince Frederick Parish, SC

I (Marty Grant) could be a 7th Great Grandson of John and Elizabeth (---) Cribb. That connection is based on some unproven family links, so it could be wrong.

As far as I can tell, John Cribb was probably born in the late 1600's, perhaps in England or somewhere in America. I really have no clue when or where he was born. He was married already by 1717, so if at least 21 then, he was born ca 1696 or earlier. In the Leonardo Andrea papers on the Cribb family, he states that John Cribb came to SC from near London in England. He offered no written sources, other than that it was a consistent family tradition in several present Cribb families. (His data was written in 1962).

I don't know who John Cribb's parents are. He may have a brother named Thomas Cribb, or perhaps Thomas is his son instead. It is difficult to say.

John Cribb married Elizabeth --- before 1717, for in that year they were listed as members of the Prince Frederick Episcopal Church on Black River (SC). The record listed them as husband and wife. I don't know when Elizabeth was born, nor what her maiden name is. (Their names were given in the Prince Frederick Parish Register).

The Cribbs could have been part of the Welsh colony that came to the Pee Dee River area from Pennsylvania, or perhaps they were English colonists who came up from Charleston. I have no real evidence either way.

I have very little data on this generation of the family. John and Elizabeth were named once more in the Parish records in 1729, when on 10 Dec 1729, their son John Cribb was born, and on 27 Sep 1730 when son John was Baptized.

There may be other records pertaining to John and Elizabeth, but at present, this is all I have found. I don't know when they died. Leonardo Andrea stated that John and Elizabeth were transferred by letter to the new Christ Church on Sandy Bluff (this church was formed in 1735).

Leonardo Andrea mentioned that they (John and Elizabeth) were listed on a 1736 list as those living outside of Williamsburg Township, so they were still alive in 1736. Sandy Bluff is in present Marion County. I don't think there are any early records of this church extant.

John and Elizabeth (---) Cribb had one child (John-1729) as proven by the Prince Frederick Parish records, and I think it is possible that Thomas Cribb was also their son, though it is also plausible that Thomas is John's brother instead. Leonardo Andrea also speculated that Thomas was a son of John and Elizabeth.

Thomas Cribb was born ca 1710, or before (assuming he was at least 21 when his first child was born in 1731). He is not a proven child of John and Elizabeth (---) Cribb, but it seems likely that he is their son.

John Cribb was born 10 Dec 1729 in Craven Co, SC (either in present Georgetown or Williamsburg County). He was baptized on 27 Sep 1730 in Prince Frederick Parish. Both events (birth and baptism) are recorded in the Prince Frederick Parish Records, and they also prove John was a son of John and Elizabeth.

I have no direct proof, but I'm fairly sure this is the same John who later moved to the Maiden Down area of present Marion County, and died there before 1787. See his own page for additional information.
