I (Marty Grant) am a 3rd Great Grandnephew of Jefferson George.
Note: The George family is fully documented in the author's book "George Family History" now available. Click link for details. On the current web pages I am only presenting the most interesting documentation. There is a great deal more available that is not included here. Most of the available source documentation is in the book mentioned above. There are also many acknowledgments to be made. The book contains them all. Some are listed here.
Special thanks to Nancy Lail Love and Charles Jefferson (Jeff) George for data shared on this family. (Click here to read C. J. "Jeff" George's fabulous write-up on this family)

Jefferson George was born 30 Nov 1836 in Blount Co, TN. Jefferson is a proven son of Charles Noden George and Celia Smith. He was listed in their family bible (in possession of Charles Jefferson George of Midland, TX) as Jefferson George born in the year of our Lord Nov 30th day A.D. 1836.
Jefferson George was apparently home with his parents for the 1840 census in Blount Co, TN. In the 1840's, the family left Blount County for neighboring Monroe Co, TN. Jefferson was home with his parents for the 1850 census in Monroe Co, TN.
(Note: The dates at the end of each line are not part of the original census, but are approximate birth years based on age)

In the 1850's, most of this family moved to neighboring Cherokee Co, NC and settled in the Tulula Creek area (now Graham County). However, it seems that Jefferson didn't go with them, or if he did, he didn't remain long.
I did not find Jefferson on the 1860 census, though his parents were in Cherokee Co, NC, as were his brothers and sisters, except for Elizabeth who was still in Tennessee.
For the Civil War, Jefferson George enlisted on 1 Jun 1861 in Cherokee Co, NC. He joined Company D, 25th Regiment, North Carolina Troops as a Private. He was listed as age 24, born Blount Co, TN, and a resident of Cherokee Co, NC or Knoxville, TN, and his occupation was Farmer. He was promoted to Sergeant on 14 Oct 1861, but was reduced back to Private by March/April 1862. He was captured at Petersburg, VA on 30 Jul 1864. He was confined at Point Lookout, Maryland, until transferred to Elmira, NY on 8 Aug 1864. He was released 3 Jul 1865 after taking the Oath of Allegiance.
Jefferson George married Mary Elizabeth Young on 17 Oct 1865 in Cherokee Co, NC. This marriage wasn't recorded in the public records, but it is found in the Charles Noden George family bible, though the year is illegible. Mary is a daughter of Joseph Tarply Young and his wife Mira V. McFalls (or Mira V. Ledford). Her maiden name is given two different ways in various sources, and I am not sure which is correct, whether McFalls or Ledford. Both names are well known in Yancey Co, NC where her parents originated.
On 20 Oct 1869 Jefferson George witnessed a deed from James H. Wiggins and wife Polly Elvira Wiggins to C. N. George (his father), for 50 acres on Tulula Creek. (Cherokee Co, NC Deed Book 12 page 416).
Jefferson George was living in Macon Co, NC for the 1870 census, with his widowed mother residing with him. Although they were in Macon Co, NC, they were very close by the rest of the family, only a couple of miles away.

Jefferson George paid taxes in Cherokee Co, NC and Macon Co, NC for the year 1870. (Per tax receipts from C. J. George collection)
In 1870, several deeds were made among the heirs of both Washington George and Charles Noden George. Jefferson was named in most of these.
On 30 Mar 1870 an agreement was made among the heirs of Washington George, deceased, and C. N. George, deceased, to equally divide all their property amongst them. It was signed by Celia George (widow of Charles N. George), and Jefferson George, John Harrison and wife Elizabeth Harrison, Payton Colvard and wife Louisa Colvard, Charles L. White, Rachel B. George, (guardian of James George, Charles George, Nancy E. George an Jefferson George, infant heirs of Lafayette George, deceased). Witnesses to the deed were James M. Phillips and Reuben Carver. (Cherokee Co, NC Deed Book 13 page 100).
On 6 May 1870 C. L. White of Richview, Washington Co, IL appointed Jefferson George of Valleytown, Cherokee Co, NC to be his true and lawful attorney to settle up the estate of C. N. George, deceased. (Cherokee Co, NC Deed Book 19 page 327).
On 1 Aug 1870 Celia George, of Macon Co, NC, sold her interest in the 51 acres formerly belonging to Washington George, to her son Jefferson George for $100. Witness was Joseph T. Young (Cherokee Co, NC Deed Book 13 page 197).
On 1 Aug 1870, Celia George, Jefferson George, R. B. George (Rachel), all of Cherokee Co, NC, and John Harrison and wife Elizabeth of Monroe Co, TN, and C. L. White of Washington Co, IL sold 45 acres of their inherited land to P. S. Colvard and wife Louisa (George) Colvard. This was signed by each of them, except for C. L. White, who presumably was home in Illinois, his signature was by Jefferson George, as his agent. "M. E. George" also signed, this was Jefferson's wife. Joseph T. Young was the witness. (Cherokee Co, NC Deed Book 13 page 198)
Also on 1 Aug 1870, Celia George, Jefferson George, P. S. Colvard and wife Louisa, all of Cherokee Co, NC; and C. L. White of Washington Co, IL; sold land (acreage?) to John Harrison and wife Elizabeth of Monroe Co, TN. Rachel wasn't named, but she signed the deed with the rest. "M. E. George" (Jefferson's wife) also signed. Joseph T. Young was witness. (Cherokee Co, NC Deed Book 13 page 202)
Again on 1 Aug 1870, some of the land was divided. Jefferson George, R. B. George (Rachel), P. S. Colvard and wife Louisa, of Cherokee Co, NC, and John Harrison and wife Elizabeth of Monroe Co, TN and C. L. White of Washington Co, IL sold 51 acres to Celia George for $400. Joseph T. Young was the witness. (Cherokee Co, NC Deed Book 13 page 205)
Again on 1 Aug 1870, R. B. George (Rachel), Celia George, P. S. Colvard and wife Louisa Colvard of Cherokee Co, NC; John Harrison and wife Elizabeth of Monroe Co, TN and C. L. White of Washington Co, IL sold Jefferson George 51 acres. Joseph T. Young was the witness. (Cherokee Co, NC Deed Book 13 page 209).
Again on 1 Aug 1870 Celia George, Jefferson George, P. S. Colvard and wife Louisa Colvard, of Cherokee Co, NC, and John Harrison and wife Elizabeth of Monroe Co, TN and C. L. White of Washington Co, IL sold 79 acres to Rachel B. George. Witness was Joseph T. Young. (Cherokee Co, NC Deed Book 13 page 212).
Again on 1 Aug 1870 R. B. George (Rachel), Celia George, Jefferson George, P. S. Colvard and wife Louisa of Cherokee Co, NC; sold 153 acres to C. L. White of Washington Co, IL for $400. Joseph T. Young was the witness. (Cherokee Co, NC Deed Book 13 page 216).
On 31 Oct 1870 John Harrison and wife Elizabeth Harrison of Monroe Co, TN, sold 69 acres to Jefferson George of Macon Co, NC. (Cherokee Co, NC Deed Book 13 page 222)
On 14 Dec 1870 Jefferson George and wife M. E. George of Macon Co, NC sold Rachel (R. B. George) a tract of land formerly belonging to Washington George. I didn't note the acreage, but the land was called the "Joseph Sherrill lands". (Cherokee Co, NC Deed Book 13 page 224 and also recorded in Graham Co, NC Deed Book D page 178 which lists Jefferson as of Monroe Co, TN).
On 16 Dec 1870 C. L. White, and wife Belle White of Washington Co, IL sold their part of the inheritance from C. N. George to Jefferson George "of Graham Co, NC" for $380. (Graham Co, NC Deed Book A page 358).
Jefferson George paid taxes in Cherokee Co, NC, Cheoah Township, and Swain Co, NC, Welch's Township, for the year 1871. The section of Macon Co, NC where he lived, might have became Swain County in 1871. Welch's Township was dissolved at the same time, and became Nantahala Township, but it was so listed on the tax receipt. His subsequent tax receipts show him in Macon Co, NC, so perhaps the county line was unsure at this time, and they thought he was in Swain. (Per tax receipts from C. J. George collection)
In 1872, Jeff George paid taxes in Graham Co, NC, Cheoah Township (Graham County was created the same year from Cherokee County), for himself and for his brother-in-law John Harrison and nephew C. L. White. (Per tax receipts from C. J. George collection)
In 1873, Jeff George paid taxes in Graham Co, NC, Cheoah Township (Graham County was created the same year from Cherokee County), for himself and for his brother-in-law John Harrison and nephew C. L. White. (Per tax receipts from C. J. George collection)
In 1874, Jeff George paid taxes in Graham Co, NC, Cheoah Township (Graham County was created the same year from Cherokee County), for himself and for his brother-in-law John Harrison and nephew C. L. White. (Per tax receipts from C. J. George collection)
On 1 Feb 1874 Jeff George and wife M. E. George sold some property to P. S. Colvard. (Graham Co, NC Deed Book A page 26).
On 11 Mar 1874 Jefferson George and wife Mary George of Macon Co, NC, sold land to Rachel B. Cooper of Graham Co, NC. The land was described as "where she now lives" being known as the land of C. L. White, as heired from Washington George. (Graham Co, NC Deed Book D page 181)
In 1875, Jeff George paid taxes in Graham Co, NC, Cheoah Township (Graham County was created the same year from Cherokee County), for himself and for his brother-in-law John Harrison and nephew C. L. White. He also paid taxes in Cherokee Co, NC and Macon Co, NC (perhaps his "Swain County" entry from before was due to a faulty county line). (Per tax receipts from C. J. George collection)
In 1876, Jeff George paid taxes in Graham Co, NC, Cheoah Township (Graham County was created the same year from Cherokee County), for himself and for his brother-in-law John Harrison and nephew C. L. White. (Per tax receipts from C. J. George collection)
On 5 Oct 1876 Stephen Porter and wife E. L. Porter sold Jefferson George of Macon Co, NC, 50 acres, for $500. Witness was J. Reid. (Cherokee Co, NC Deed Book 15 page 448).
On 10 Nov 1876 Jeff George and Mary George, of Macon Co, NC sold land in Graham Co, NC to P. S. Colvard for $350, described as formerly belonging to C. L. White. (Graham Co, NC Deed Book A page 196).
Apparently, Jefferson and family left Macon Co, NC between 1876 and 1878 and settled in the Peachtree area of Cherokee Co, NC. The 1877 tax receipts show him paying for his brother-in-law John Harrison, but not for himself.
In 1877, Jeff George paid taxes in Graham Co, NC, Cheoah Township (Graham County was created the same year from Cherokee County), for his brother-in-law John Harrison. He also paid taxes in Cherokee and Macon Co, NC. (Per tax receipts from C. J. George collection)
In 1878, Jeff George paid taxes in Graham, Cherokee and Macon Co, NC. (Per tax receipts from C. J. George collection)
On 20 Apr 1878 James M. Whitaker and wife Elizabeth Ann Whitaiker of Cherokee Co, NC, sold Jefferson George of Cherokee Co, NC, 16 acres on Valley River. (Cherokee Co, NC Deed Book 16 page 92).
In 1879, Jeff George paid taxes in Graham Co, NC. He also paid for his brother-in-law John Harrison. (Per tax receipts from C. J. George collection)
Jefferson George and family were listed on the 1880 census in Cherokee Co, NC, in Valleytown Township. Jefferson's widowed mother was still residing with them.

In 1883, Jeff George paid taxes in Macon, Cherokee and Graham Co, NC. The following photo is of the old George home place at Peachtree, NC, taken in 1974 by C. J. "Jeff" George. He thinks it may be gone by now. I'll try to check on it next time I visit Cherokee County.
By 1919, Mary E. George had moved to Cameron Co, TX.

The above was the last record I found for Mary E. George in Cherokee Co, NC. She died on 31 Jul 1939 in Cameron Co, TX. She was blind for many years before her death.
There is much more that could be said about Jefferson and Mary, but I'll leave it at this for now. Be sure to read C. J. "Jeff" George's excellent article on this family. Click here to view it.
Jefferson George and Mary Elizabeth Young had several children, all listed in the Charles Noden George Family Bible. They are also proven by the census records, and by a family history written in 1938, which was told by Mary E. George to her daughter Ida Thwing.

On 14 Sep 1901, Charles George, age 30 of Peachtree, NC married Dora Waldroup age 21, also of Peachtree.
They moved to Day (later Roger Mills) County, Oklahoma before 1903. Charles died on 26 Dec 1935 in Roger Mills Co, OK. I don't have a death date for Dora. I haven't followed this family out of NC, so I have no additional data on them. I have a list of children for them, as shared by Jeff (Charles Jefferson) George.

James Robinson George was born 24 Jan 1876 in Cherokee Co, NC. He was home with his parents in 1880.
I don't know where he was in 1900, as he wasn't with his widowed mother in Cherokee Co, NC. He married Margie Frances Millard on 6 Feb 1908, in Jack Co, TX. Jeff George, a grandson of James, sent me the following, in response to my comments above (6-21-2000):
Actually, he was in the Philippines in 1900, serving in the Army in the
Spanish-American War. He served from April 14, 1899 to January, 1900, when
he was discharged, apparently for medical reasons. He stayed in California
for while, then was in north Texas by 1907 or 1908, where he married my
grandmother, Margie Frances Millard in Jack County, Texas on 6 Feb 1908. (I
have a copy of their marriage license). Then they lived for a while in Roger
Mills Co., OK (where my Dad was born Nov 14, 1908), moving to Cameron Co., TX
in 1909. They lived in Rio Hondo, Cameron Co., TX from 1909 until the 1970's
when they moved to Houston to be near their son, Rex, and daughter, Carol.
James R. George died on 9 Jan 1980 at the amazing age of 103, just a few days shy of 104! Margie died 25 Dec 1980, both in Houston, TX.
Here is a photo of J. R. and wife Margie, taken in 1958 for their 50th Wedding Anniversary. Thanks to Jeff George for sharing this.
