Revision History:
  • New page by Marty Grant, 4th Great Grandson of Charles Noden George and Celia Smith.

Note: The George family is fully documented in the author's book "George Family History" now available. Click link for details. On the current web pages I am only presenting the most interesting documentation. There is a great deal more available that is not included here. Most of the available source documentation is in the book mentioned above. There are also many acknowledgments to be made. The book contains them all. Some are listed here.

Charles Noden George was born 21 Nov 1791 in Sullivan Co, NC. His date of birth on his tombstone shows 1790, though multiple primary sources show it was actually 1791. His Family Bible (in possession of Charles Jefferson George of Midland, TX) shows his birth as Chas N. George born the year of our Lord A.D. 1791 November 1st. A Widows Pension record filed by his widow Celia Smith George in the 1870's also gives the same birth date for him. Here is the Bible record (from the C. J. George collection)

Charles Noden George son of James Jordan George & Elizabeth Pemberton was born the 21st day of November A.D. 1791 ---- and was married to Celia Smith daughter of Jacob Smith & Mary Dugger the 8th day of February A. D. 1816 and Celia George as above stated was born Novr 17th A. D. 1794.

Charles Noden George is a proven son of James Jordan George and Elizabeth Pemberton. He was named as a son of James Jordan George in several deed records after James' death. This relationship is also proven by original family correspondence in possession of Charles Jefferson George of Midland, TX. In her widows Pension application, Celia Smith George also stated that Charles Noden George was a son of James Jordan George and Elizabeth Pemberton and quoted the bible record (listed above).

Charles Noden George was listed on public records mainly as "Charles N. George", though sometimes as "Noden George", and sometimes as "C. N. George", but seldom if ever as just "Charles George".  He was named "Noden" after his paternal grandmother Elizabeth Noden, wife of James George. The "Charles" might have been in honor of Elizabeth's brother Charles Noden.

Noden George was probably at home with his parents for the 1800 and 1810 census in Sullivan Co, TN, but unfortunately, these two census are lost for this county.

Charles N. George served during the War of 1812. He enlisted as a Private in Captain King's Company from Sullivan Co, TN on 6 Jan 1814. He served through 18 May 1814.  See Celia's Widow pension application (1878, 1879) for more information on his service. Also see his C. N. George' s statements of 1850 and 1855.

Charles N. George served as Quartermaster (in charge of supplies) during the War. Fifty or more receipts, including one signed by Andrew Jackson are in C. J. George's collection, almost all of which have Charles N. George's name on them as well. They are dated from May 2nd through July 15th, 1814, and were from Fort Strother. They contain the signatures of numerous officers and enlisted men. (Original receipts in C. J. George collection).

On 8 Feb 1816, Charles N. George married Celia Smith of Carter Co, TN, in Carter County. They were married by Julius Dugger, Esquire (Celia's Uncle) at the home of Jacob Smith (her father). Celia was a child of Jacob Smith and Mary Dugger.

Charles N. George was probably listed on the 1820 census in Carter Co, TN, but unfortunately, this census was lost for all of the eastern TN counties.

On 7 Oct 1822 Jacob Smith (Celia's father) made his Will in Carter Co, TN. Among his heirs he named his daughter "Selah George".

Charles N. George's father James Jordan George died on 14 Apr 1824 in Sullivan Co, TN. Charles N. George and the other heirs made several deeds between them dividing up his property.

Charles N. George and family moved between 1827 and 1830 from Carter County, to Blount Co, TN.

Charles N. George was listed on the 1830 census in Blount County, TN. A Samuel George, Alexander George and Edward George were also listed in Blount, but I don't believe they are related. The ages for Charles' daughters (proven by family bible) do not align well with this census record.

1830 census analysis (based on available evidence):

For the 1840 census, Charles N. George was still in Blount Co, TN. Alexander, Barbara, and Edward George were also listed there, again, I think they are unrelated.

Charles N. George and family left Blount Co, TN after 1842, for neighboring Monroe Co, TN.

They were listed in Monroe Co, TN for the 1850 census. They were living in the Ball Play community.

On 4 Feb 1850, Charles N. George sold land in Sullivan Co, TN to his Uncle Ezekiel Pemberton. I don't have the details. (Sullivan Co, TN Deed Book 19 page 291)

On 25 Oct 1850, Charles N. George wrote a letter asking for any Bounty Land that he was due for his War of 1812 service. It was a short letter, and is filed in his Pension records:

"Hon. Alexander F.F. STUART, Washington City, D.C. Dear Sir, I desire that my claim to Bounty Land may be Examined and if I am entitled to any, I wish a warrant to Issue and directed Ball Play, Monroe County, Tennessee to me. This October 25th 1850. (Signed) Chas N. George"

On the same day, this affidavit was filed:

:25 Oct 1850 Monroe Co, TN Charles N. GEORGE "This day personally appeared before me, William BURNS an Acting Justice of the Peace for McMinn, Tenn, Charles N. GEORGE and after being duly sworn according to Law, Says that he is of the age of Fifty nine years that he is the Identical Charles N. GEORGE who was called into the service of the United States in the month of January 1814, which was the second call from Tennessee for men to go out against the creek Indians and that he was mustered into Service for six months at Camp Williams over Knoxville, TN in the said month of of (sic) January on the tenth or Eleventh day of said month, under the command of Capt. William KING from Sullivan County, TN. Regiment of East Tennessee Militia, commanded by Col. Ewing Allison from Green County in Gen. George DAUGHERTY's brigade of East Tennessee Militia, and he said Charles N. GEORGE served out out (sic) the six months and was honorably discharged by sd Capt William KING of Sullivan County. That he never sold his discharge but the same is lost or misplaced so that he cannot find it, the said Chas N. GEORGE makes this declaration in order to Obtain Bounty land under an act of Congress passed 28th sep 1850, granting bounty land to the officers and soldiers of the war of 1812, with Great Brittain and Mexican War, 1846. Sworn to and subscribed before me, this 25th day of Oct 1850. I am personally aquanted with the above named Chas N. GEORGE and believe him to be the person who rendered the above named service to United States. Signed, William BURNS, Justice of the Peace, State of Tennessee. Signed Charles N. George".

On 16 Nov 1857, Charles N. George sold more of his Sullivan Co, TN land, this time to William G. Odell (his nephew). (Sullivan Co, TN Deed Book 19 page 291)

On 18 Jan 1858, Charles N. George (C. N. George) purchased 112 acres on Tulula Creek in Cherokee Co, NC (now Graham Co, NC). He bought the land from J. P. Colvard and wife Ruth Colvard, the land formerly belonging to Joseph Sherrill, deceased. Witnesses were J. P. Colvard and B. B. Colvard. (Cherokee Co, NC Deed Book 11 page 718).

The above deed signified the move from Monroe Co, TN to Cherokee (now Graham) Co, NC.

Charles N. George and wife were listed on the 1860 census in Cherokee Co, NC. This census taker was thoughtful, and included everyone's county of birth, and not just the state as was required.

(Note: The dates at the end of each line are not part of the original census, but are approximate birth years based on age)

C. N. George was also listed on the 1860 agriculture census. He had 35 cultivated acres, and the following statistics: Stock = 12, Hogs = 30, Wheat = 0, Corn = 500, Tobacco = 0, Wool = 0, Potato = 15, Butter = 100, Flax = 0, and Molasses = 20. I'm not sure what each unit of measurement was.

The Civil War brought the George men into action for the Confederate cause. This action extended to Charles N. George as well, in spite of his advanced age. On 1 Jun 1861 he enlisted in Company D, 25th Regiment, North Carolina Troops as a Sergeant. He was reported as 70 years old, born in Sullivan Co, TN, and a resident of Cherokee Co, NC. He was reduced to Private on 15 Sep 1861, and he was discharged on 30 Apr 1862 because of disability.

This means that Charles Noden George was a veteran of two wars, the War of 1812 and the Civil War.

He died on 12 May 1869 and was buried on his property. A tombstone was erected (I don't know how much later), that contained his birth and death dates, though his birth year was wrong.

On 3 Dec 1869 C. N. George received a land grant for 100 acres on Tulula Creek. He entered (claimed) the land on 12 Mar 1853, and it apparently took 16 years to get approved! Unfortunately, he didn't live to see this land granted to him. (Cherokee Co, NC Deed Book 13 page 148)

For the 1870 census, Celia Smith George was residing with her son Jefferson George in Macon Co, NC, not very far from where they had lived on Tulula Creek (which is very close the Macon, Swain, Graham and Cherokee County lines).

In 1870, Celia Smith George, and the heirs of Charles N. George and of their son Washington George, agreed to equally divide the land. Several deeds were made among them giving each heir a portion of the land.

On 30 Mar 1870 an agreement was made among the heirs of Washington George, deceased, and C. N. George, deceased, to equally divide all their property amongst them. It was signed by Celia George (widow of Charles N. George), and Jefferson George, John Harrison and wife Elizabeth Harrison, Payton Colvard and wife Louisa Colvard, Charles L. White, Rachel B. George, (guardian of James George, Charles George, Nancy E. George an Jefferson George, infant heirs of Lafayette George, deceased). Witnesses to the deed were James M. Phillips and Reuben Carver. (Cherokee Co, NC Deed Book 13 page 100).

On 1 Aug 1870 Celia George, of Macon Co, NC, sold her interest in the 51 acres formerly belonging to Washington George, to her son Jefferson George for $100. Witness was Joseph T. Young (Cherokee Co, NC Deed Book 13 page 197).

On 1 Aug 1870, Celia George, Jefferson George, R. B. George (Rachel), all of Cherokee Co, NC, and John Harrison and wife Elizabeth of Monroe Co, TN, and C. L. White of Washington Co, IL sold 45 acres of their inherited land to P. S. Colvard and wife Louisa (George) Colvard. This was signed by each of them, except for C. L. White, who presumably was home in Illinois, his signature was by Jefferson George, as his agent. "M. E. George" also signed, this was Jefferson's wife. Joseph T. Young was the witness. (Cherokee Co, NC Deed Book 13 page 198)

There were several other deeds made by the heirs.

Celia Smith George moved with her son Jefferson from Macon Co, NC to Cherokee Co, NC in the 1870's.

In 1878 Celia Smith George applied for a widows pension based on her late husbands War of 1812 service. Here are a few documents from the file (there were many pages, but these were the most interesting):

20 Apr 1878 Cherokee Co, NC Celia GEORGE, widow of Charles N. GEORGE. War of 1812, Widow Claim for Pension. "On this 20th day of April A.D. one thousand eight hundred and seventy eight, personally appeared before me Jo. T. Signed Celia George

On 28 Jan 1879 General John R. Delaney made a statement for her widows pension:

28 Jan 1879 Sullivan Co, TN General John R. DELANEY, age 79 "In the matter of Pension claim of Celia GEORGE, widow of Charles N. GEORGE. Personally appeared before me a J.M. GEORGE which death occured about 9 years ago and that she still remains his widow. He further declares that he has no interest in said case and is not concerned in its prosecution. Signed: John R. On 27 Aug 1879 Celia George made an affidavit (filed in the pension claim).

27 Aug 1879 Cherokee Co, NC Celia GEORGE, widow of Charles N. GEORGE: "In the matter of Pension claim of Celia GEORGE, widow of Charles N. GEORGE,. That said record was made by C.N. GEORGE in the year not known and that said Bible was printed in the year not known. She further says that there is no public record of her marriage and that the person who married her and all the witnesses to the ceremony save one which is John R. DELANEY, are dead. That the best evidence of her marriage she can furnish is the above Bible Record and the evidence of the surviving witness to the marriage." Signed: Celia George, Jo. T. Young, James Whitaker. Note in margin: "The bible record was preserved & Bible was desposed of 24 years ago";

Celia was again listed with son Jefferson on the 1880 census in Cherokee Co, NC.

Celia Smith George died in 1885 in Cherokee Co, NC. She is buried at the Peachtree Cemetery.

Almost 100 hundred years after the death of Charles N. George, Nancy Lail Love and her sister Ruth Lail Forsyth worked to properly mark and fence in his lone grave in Graham Co, NC. Here is the text of the newspaper article from The Andrews Journal, Andrews, North Carolina, dated Thursday, March 4, 1965. This was sent to me many years ago by Nancy Lail Love:

Historical Marker Finally Restored - Charles Noden George, Veteran of 1812 by Bob Barker

Through the combined efforts of Mrs. Vincent G. Love (Nancy Lail Love) of East Bank, West Virginia and her sister, Mrs. Frank Forsyth (Ruth Lail Forsyth) of Murphy, great-great granddaughters of Charles Noden George 1790-1869, veteran of the War of 1812 and pioneer settler of Graham County, his grave in an open field on land granted to him by the State, has been properly marked and fenced in Upper Tulula near Topton.

The North Carolina Legislature in establishing the new county of Graham, provided that the property line of Charles Noden George adjoining Macon County should be the County dividing line.

Charles Noden George born in Sullivan County, Tennessee, in 1790, served in the Tennessee Militia in the War of 1812. C. N. George was a son of James Jordan George and wife, Elizabeth Pemberton George of Caroline County, Virginia, who moved to Sullivan County, Tennessee, in 1790. Mr. George and his wife Celia Smith George had had three sons, Washington George, Lafayette George and Jefferson George, they being called Wash, Fate and Jeff. The family lived in Monroe County, Tennessee, 15th Civil District in 1850 and records of the Postmaster General and the U. S. Senate, show that Charles Noden George was appointed and confirmed as Postmaster at Citico in 1847.

Mr. George moved to present Graham County (then Cherokee Count) in 1852 and established a homestead on rich fertile land now known as the John Colvard Place, head of Tulula. J. W. C. (Wes) Piercy, Surveyor, assisted by J. D. Cooper, rodman and Ute Sherrill as Chain bearer, surveyed the entry of C. N. George on April 14, 1853. But the Grant of 100 acres was not made until Dec. 3, 1869 after the death of C. N. George.

The sons of C. N. George entered the Confederate Army in 1861 and 1862 and all had active service - Lafayette George, an officer in Colonel Wm H. Thomas' Confederate Legion, being mortally wounded in battle in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia.

The George Clan is still very large and numerous in Graham, Cherokee and Clay Counties and North East Georgia.

Charles Noden George was a Mason and Tellico Lodge No. 80 in Madisonville and the Grand Lodge of Tennessee authorized the erection of a footstone at his grave.

The above article only contains one mistake, and that is having Charles N. George born in 1790. His tombstone also shows this as his birth year, but he was actually born in 1791.

I visited Charles Noden George's grave in the late 1980's. It is no longer an open field, but it is now in the woods, and the fence has fallen down, and the trees and underbrush are seriously encroaching on the grave. He has a tall tombstone, which was probably the one placed in 1965, and a small one that is leaning against the tall one, which may be the original from his burial in 1869. He also has a footstone with his Masonic information on it, also placed in 1965, I believe. I have photo's of the graves, that I will attempt to scan for inclusion here on the web page.

Children of Charles Noden George and Celia Smith. They had eight children, proven by their family bible, and also by the land records in 1870 dividing the estate of Charles N. George and son Washington George.

Here is a transcript of the Charles N. George family bible pages pertaining to their family. The originals are in the possession of Charles Jefferson (Jeff) George of Midland, TX. These were loose pages in the family bible (dated 1853), and Jeff believes they were torn from an older family bible, which was probably the case. The same data is repeated on yet another page, in slightly different syntax, but all the names and dates agree with this entry, so I won't give both here.
