[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home]
I (Marty Grant) am 5th Great Grandson of James Jordan George and Elizabeth Pemberton, and a 1st cousin, 6 times removed to Nancy Dugger.
Note: The George family is fully documented in the author's book "George Family History" now available. Click link for details. On the current web pages I am only presenting the most interesting documentation. There is a great deal more available that is not included here. Most of the available source documentation is in the book mentioned above. There are also many acknowledgments to be made. The book contains them all. Some are listed here.
Special thanks to Helen C. Davis, Jeff George, Joseph T. George, Mary Mills, and Betsy Sullivan and others for data shared on this family.
James Jordan George was born 24 Dec 1761 in Caroline Co, VA. His birth date was apparently recorded in his family bible, though no one knows where this record is now. James Jordan George is a proven son of James George and Elizabeth Noden and was named in his father's Will (1799) and in deeds among the heirs of James George. James' middle name "Jordan" was undoubtedly in honor of his paternal grandmother, Mary Jordan George, wife of John George.
James Jordan George almost always used his middle name or middle initial on his public records, so as not to be confused with his father James George. When his initial wasn't used, he was referred to as "Jr". Even after his father's death, he continued to use the middle initial or name in all records.
James J. George was born in Caroline Co, VA, but while he was only about 5 or 6 years old, the family moved south to Pittsylvania Co, VA, arriving there the same year the county was formed (1767).
James J. George made his first appearance on the public records in 1781.
On 1 Aug 1781 James Jordan George (and Joshua Stone, John Lumpkin, William Easley and John Adams) witnessed a deed between William Logan of Greenbrier Co, VA to John George (James Jordan George's Uncle). (Pittsylvania Co, VA Deed Book 6 page 225).
James Jordan George was listed on the 1787 Virginia census in Pittsylvania Co, VA. He was listed as James George Jr. He was listed with one male over 21 (himself), one slave over age of 16, and 2 horses.
In March 1787 in Pittsylvania Court, James George Jr was listed as an assignee of Samuel Hughs in a case against Arthur Keeze for debt. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Court Orders Book 3 page 68).
On 1 Aug 1787 James George Jr (and Vincent Shelton, W. Shelton and Fred Shelton) witnessed a deed between John George of Halifax Co, VA (his uncle) and Abraham Shelton. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Deed Book 8 page 88).
On 18 Feb 1788 James George Jr purchased 208 acres on Sycamore Creek. The land was sold by the Sheriff, William Todd, for taxes owed by Henry Bunch (who owned the land). James bought this jointly with William Shelton. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Deed Book 8 page 167).
Also on 18 Feb 1788, James George Jr purchased land on Green Rock Creek, also from the Sheriff. This land had belonged to Frances Moore Petty, but was lost due to taxes owed. I didn't note the acreage. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Deed Book 8 page 180).
On 31 Mar 1789, James George Jr, of Pittsylvania Co, VA sold 122 acres on Green Rock Creek, to William Shelton. Witnesses were: William George (cousin), John George (uncle), Thomas B. Jones, Matt Bilbo (cousin-in-law) and Crispin Shelton Jr. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Deed Book 9 page 160).
Sometime between December 1788 and October 1789, James Jordan George went west to Sullivan County, North Carolina (now Tennessee). The book "Historic Sullivan" written in 1909 by Oliver Taylor mentions James George and relates a story as told by James' son John H. George. However this story is either a complete fabrication or it is referring to someone else entirely and mistakenly attributed to James Jordan George. He mentioned James' arrival in Sullivan with Daniel Boone ca 1760. Now, some simple math shows you that James Jordan George was not even born yet in 1760, so how could he have come with Daniel Boone? It is possible that James Jordan George's father James George was the one who came with Daniel Boone, though I've seen no evidence that he ever came to Tennessee. Here is the quote:
"The Boone trail struck Sullivan County at George's Gap, named for James George, one of the Boone party, thence down through Shady Valley, near what is now called Fish Dam." ("Historic Sullivan", page 22, Oliver Taylor, 1909).
There is a footnote after James George's name in the above book, and here is what the footnote says:
"James George was a man of great physical strength. Tests of strength were common in the early days and challenges frequent. Those old warriors that were fearless in battle were almost desperate in brawls. One day George sent for the old pioneer doctor, Elkanah Dudley, and told him he had sent for him to pull all his teeth. The doctor protested, saying, George's teeth were too sound to be pulled, whereupon the latter replied: "If you don't pull 'em I'll bite Blevins' ear or nose off the very next fight we get into." The law against biting and maiming was more strictly enforced then than now and meant a penitentiary term. The doctor humored the inevitable and extracted all his teeth. The George family keep these teeth in a pearl case as heirlooms and molar evidence of a mighty strength. The family is also remarkable for its longevity as were many of the families whose ancestors lived out-door lives. Dr. John George, now in his eighty-fifth year, is a son of James George and says the latter died in his ninety-sixth year, when the former was but a few months old. These two lives reach back one hundred and eighty-one years, making the elder twenty-three years of age when accompanying Boone." ("Historic Sullivan", page 22, Oliver Taylor, 1909).
Now it is obvious that the source for these statements was John Henderson George (1824) a son of James Jordan George and his second wife Nancy Dugger. James died only a month and half after John was born, so it is obvious that John never knew him, so the source for his stories must be his mother and his siblings and other relatives. John made several mistakes in his information. First of all, his father was not 96 when he died, but only 62. And based on his age, James was not even born yet when Daniel Boone visited the area in 1760, so "George's Gap" must be named for someone else. As I mentioned earlier, it is quite possible that James Jordan George's father James George was with Daniel Boone, but I seriously doubt it. "George's Gap" was probably named for someone with a first name of "George", or it was indeed named for one of our Georges, but much later on, after Boone came through. That these facts were given wrong also makes me doubt the story about the teeth, but as far as I know, that could be true. However, people did have a tendency to tell "tall-tales" in those days (and now too). I wonder what happened to the pearl case with the teeth in it? That would be a neat (though gruesome) relic to have today.
James George purchased a marriage bond in Sullivan County between December 1788 and 15 October 1789. Unfortunately the bond is not extant, only the register showing that he bought one. However, we know from other sources that he married Elizabeth Pemberton about this time, and in that county. Elizabeth was born 13 Jul 1772 (per tombstone) either in Culpeper Co, VA or in Sullivan Co, NC (now TN), daughter of John Pemberton and Elizabeth Delaney.
They apparently lived in both Sullivan County, NC (now TN) and Pittsylvania Co, VA for the next few years, apparently calling both home, or else James just traveled back in forth to conduct business, leaving wife and children in Sullivan.
The 1790 census would show us whether James J. George were in Sullivan County, or Pittsylvania County, but unfortunately, this census is lost for both Tennessee and Virginia.
On 3 Mar 1792 James George Jr and William Shelton, both "of Pittsylvania Co, VA" sold their jointly owned 208 acres on Sycamore Creek to David Allen. Witnesses were: John White, Hugh George (his brother), William Henderson (brother-in-law) and W. Bardell. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Deed Book 9 page 181).
The deed above completely left James Jordan George without any property in Pittsylvania Co, VA. I am fairly sure he was living in Sullivan Co, TN permanently at this point even though the deed listed him as a resident of Pittsylvania Co, VA.
James George was listed on the 1796 tax list in Sullivan Co, TN. He was listed with 1 white, and with 50 acres. (I haven't found the origin of this land yet).
James George was listed on the 1797 tax list in Sullivan Co, TN. He was listed with 1 white, 1 black and still with 50 acres.
James George was also listed on the 1797 tax list in Washington Co, VA (borders Sullivan Co, TN) and charged with 1 white poll. He may have been in both counties at the same time, or had land in both. It is also possible that this is a different James George.
On 18 Feb 1798 James Jordan George
purchased 50 acres on the North bank of the Holston River from James Offield.
The price was $500. (Sullivan Co, TN Deed Book 3 page 174).
On 19 Dec 1798, back in Pittsylvania County, VA, James J. George's father
James George, made his Will. Among
his heirs he named "my beloved son James Jordan George". He was given 300 acres
on the Wolf Branch. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Deeds and Wills Book 11
page x)
James Jordan George was probably listed on the 1800 census in Sullivan Co, TN,
but unfortunately, the 1800 census was lost for the state of Tennessee.
On 25 Nov 1800, James Jordan George "of Sullivan Co, TN" sold his 300 acres that he inherited from his father. The land was described as being on Sycamore and Old Wolf Creek. He sold the land to his brother-in-law William Henderson for 1500 pounds. He signed the deed J. J. George. Witnesses were Thomas Patterson, Hugh George (his brother), Joshua Stone, John Thurman, Nathan Thurman, and Phillip Thurman. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Deed Book 12 page 512).
This is a transcript of the above deed dated 25 Nov 1800. This document proves that James Jordan George of Sullivan Co, TN is the same man of the same name from Pittsylvania Co, VA, and a son of James George:
This indenture made the twenty fifth day of November in the year of our Lord eighteen hundred between James Jordan George of the County of Sullivan in the State of Tennessee of the one part and William Henderson, of the County of Pittsylvania of the other part. Witnesseth that the said James Jordan George for and in consideration for the sum of Fifteen pounds Current Money of Virginia to him in hand paid by the said William Henderson, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, hath granted bargained and sold released and confirmed unto the said William Henderson and to his heirs and assigns forever one certain tract or parcel of land situated lying and being in the County of Pittsylvania on the drafts of Sycamore and old Wolf Creek containing by a late survey three hundred acres being the land left by James George, deceased in his last will and testament to the said James J. Elizabeth Pemberton George died in June 1802, in Sullivan Co, TN. Her date of death is in conflict with the birth date of her youngest child. She is buried at the Pemberton Cemetery in Sullivan Co, TN and her stone says "Elizabeth George" 13 Jul 1772 - 4 Jun 1802. Teri Tillman recently viewed this stone and reported it was very hard to read, but she is fairly sure it says 4 Jul 1802. Another survey (many years ago) showed 11 June. The problem with these dates is that their last known child was born 14 Jun 1802, though the exact source of that is now lost, though it was from an old family bible (now apparently lost). It may mean that the child was actually born on the 4th, and Elizabeth died the same day, either in childbirth, or from complications.
We can probably safely assume that Elizabeth Pemberton's parents helped James Jordan George raise his young children, at least until he remarried in 1805.
On 31 Oct 1805 James J. George obtained a marriage bond in neighboring Carter Co, TN to marry Nancy Dugger. Nancy was a child of Julius Dugger and Mary Hall.
On 3 Jun 1807 Walter Blevins sold James J. George of Sullivan Co, TN, 125 acres on Stoney Creek in Carter Co, TN. (Carter Co, TN Deed Book B page 113).
On 21 Aug 1809 James Offield sold James George, 10 acres on the Holston River in Sullivan Co, TN. (Sullivan Co, TN Deed Book 6 page 44)
James Jordan George was probably listed on the 1810 census in Sullivan Co, TN, but unfortunately, this census is lost for most of Tennessee.
On 18 Aug 1810, Staunton Pemberton (James' brother-in-law), as executor (of ?) sold 100 acres on the north bank of the Holston River to James J. George. (Sullivan Co, TN Deed Book 6 page 162).
James J. George was listed on the 1812 tax list in Sullivan Co, TN in Captain Harvey King's Company. He was listed with 1 white (himself), 3 blacks, and 160 acres.
On 15 Sep 1812, John Garland and James Hurley sold 34 acres to James Jordan George. The land was on the south bank of the Holston River, where "said Hurley now lives". (Sullivan Co, TN Deed Book 6 page 280).
On the same date (15 Sep 1812), John Garland and James Hurley sold another 30 acres to James Jordan George, with the same description. (Sullivan Co, TN Deed Book 6 page 287).
On 1 Sep 1815 James T. George ("T" is probably a "J") received a land grant from the state of Tennessee of 30 acres on Riddle Creek. (Sullivan Co, TN Deed Book 7 page 104).
On 15 Feb 1816 James J. George purchased 44 acres on the Holston from James Offill, (Offield) deceased, by Executors. (Sullivan Co, TN Deed Book 7 page 87).
On 20 May 1816, James J. George sold 50 acres on the Holston River, to Thomas Spurgin. (Sullivan Co, TN Deed Book 7 page 95).
James Jordan George was probably listed on the 1820 census in Sullivan Co, TN, but once again, this census is lost for all of eastern Tennessee.
James Jordan George died on 14 Apr 1824 in Sullivan Co, TN. This date is proven by a letter written by his widow Nancy Dugger George of Sullivan Co, TN to her step-son Charles Noden George, (addressed to Maryville, Blount Co, TN) dated 20 Apr 1824, informing him of his father's death. She said he died of "... an inflamation (as the Doctor's called it) of his intestines, after lying about 18 days." In the same letter she told of the recent birth of their last child John Henderson George. She also asked that he (Charles N.) come up to handle the estate. (From original letter in C. J. George collection)
On 17 Aug 1824, the heirs of James Jordan George made a deed relinquishing some of the inheritance from their father. This deed names the children by his first wife and by his second wife. It also refers to the Will of James Jordan George, which so far, has not been found. Apparently the children by his first wife were preparing to contest the Will, but they reached some kind of agreement, which is outlined in this deed, recorded in Sullivan Co, TN Deed Book 10 page 112:
Whereas James J. George of Sullivan County departed this life leaving a last Will & Testament in which he bequeathed to Nancy George his widow all his property both real & personal during her natural life and widowhood and at his death the Negroes and other personal property to be divided with their increase among his children as well by the first as by the second wife and specifically dividing his land on Stony Creek in Carter County to the subscribing his heirs by the fist wife and in like manner bequeathing to his three sons by the last wife to wit James D. George, William J. George, & John H. George two hundred and fifty eight acres of land lying in Sullivan County on Holston River including the place wherein he died which last Will and Testament of the said James J. George which we were about to contest but which intention we have abandoned in consideration of suitable arrangements having been made by us this day made with the his Executors by which we get our shares of the estate immediately in consideration whereof we Charles N. George, Samuel McConkey & his wife Elizabeth, formerly Elizabeth George, Peter Hunt and his wife Nancy, formerly Nancy George, Frances & Eliza George heirs and devisees of the said James J. George, deceased do hereby ratify and confirm said Will and admit that the same shall be proved & admitted to record as the law directs and have its full force and affect as against us and our heirs forever furthermore in consideration of the settlement this day made with the executors & inconsideration of the natural love and affection for our half brothers James D. George, William J. George and John H. George mentioned in said Will we do hereby release relinquish and forever quit claim to our said half brothers and their heirs for ever all the right title claim and interest which we now have or may hereafter have or might have in any event whatever in and to the lands divided to them in said Will subject to the use of their mother according to the provisions in said Will which said lands we do hereby warrant and defend to the said James D. George, William J. George and John H. George and their heirs forever from us and our heirs and all persons claiming in through by or under us and no further. Furthermore in consideration of the settlement this day made with the executors and in consideration of natural love and affection for Mary George, Edna George, Charlott George, Sarah D. George, James D. George, Margaret George, William J. George & John H. George, our half brothers and sisters all the interest title and claim which we now have or might have hereafter to any portion of the personal property according to the provision of the Will except the Negroes and all the right title claim and interest which we now have or at the death of his widow might have in said Negroes and their increase, except Jane, Jacob, Rose, Mary & Barney, she has given to us to be divided among us as our share of the Negroes we do hereby forever release to our said half half (sic) brothers and sisters and their heirs forever to be divided out according to the provisions of the Will our said half brothers and sisters should never set up title or claim to any portion or interest in the Negroes and their increase before named which we have excepted as our share of the Negroes. In all things whatever we abandon & relinquish to said half brothers and sisters all further claim upon any portion of the said estate & are fully content & satisfied. State of Tennessee Sullivan County Court of Pleas &c November Session 1824, then was Elizabeth McConkey and Nancy Hunt examined private and apart from their husbands touching their free execution of the above within instrument by the Court who acknowledged they signed the same freely and voluntarily without the persuasion or coercion of the other grantors having acknowledged the execution at a former term of this court. Richard Wetherland Clerk. Ordered to be registered Jan 17th 1825.
On the same day, Nancy George made a deed relinquishing 140 acres on Stony Creek to her step-children, children of her husband James J. George by his first wife. (Sullivan Co, TN Deed Book 10 page 81)
The following day (18 Aug 1824), the same heirs, (minus Charles N. George) relinquished their rights to a slave to Charles N. George. The following is from the original deed from the C. J. George collection, typed by C. J. George, with some slight modifications made by me:
Know all men by this presents that we, Samuel McConkey and wife Elizabeth McConkey, Peter Hunt and wife Nancy Hunt, Frances George, and Eliza George, of Carter and Sullivan Counties, State of Tennessee, have this day relinquished all of our titles, claims, and interest that we or either of us had in and to a Negro slave named Jane, given C. N. George by his father James J. George, for his lifetime and agreeable to a settlement or compromise made on the last will and testament of James J. George, Dec'd, by William Dugger, appointed executor to s'd (said?) will of said James J. George, Dec'd, and Nancy George, wife of said James J. George, Dec'd, also appointed executrix to said last will and testament. It being agreed upon by said Samuel McConkey and wife Elizabeth, Peter Hunt and wife Nancy, Frances George, Eliza George, that said C. N. On 16 Apr 1834 Jacob Taylor sold Nancy George two tracts of land on the Holston River, 18 acres and 118 acres. (Sullivan Co, TN Deed Book 11 page 349).
I didn't find Nancy on the 1840 census. She might have been residing with one of her married daughters.
I didn't find her on the 1850 census either. She may have been dead by then.
She was dead by 6 Aug 1866 for 248 acres of the land of "Nancy George heirs" was sold for back taxes. (Sullivan Co, TN Deed Book 22 page 62).
On 5 Oct 1872, Nancy's brother William Dugger made his Will in Johnson Co, TN, and among his many heirs, he named the heirs "of my sister Nancy George, deceased, and wife of James J. George, deceased".
James Jordan George and his two wives, Elizabeth Pemberton and Nancy Dugger, had 15 children. Most of these were named in the 1824 deeds dividing the estate of James Jordan George. The names and birth dates of those, and several others were apparently recorded in a family bible, whereabouts unknown. James and Elizabeth's children (some of them) are also proven in the Estate records of her brother Thomas Pemberton who died with no children. His estate division (sometime between 1858 and 1874) named his sister Elizabeth George formerly Pemberton, wife of James George, both deceased at that time. Their children named in the division was Charles N. George, Nancy George Hunt and husband Peter Hunt, Frances Odell and husband Daniel Odell, both deceased, and Elizabeth McConkey and Samuel McConkey. The same records mentioned Eliza George Cawood (Caywood) and husband Clark Cawood, both deceased.
Sarah George (1790-before 1813)
Charles Noden George (1791-1869)
Hugh George (1793-before 1824)
Elizabeth George (1796-1850/59)
Sarah George was born 30 Apr 1790 (per the alleged Family Bible), probably in Sullivan Co, TN. The only record we have of Sarah is her birth. Since another daughter was named Sarah, born in 1813, we can assume this Sarah died young or at least before 1813. She was probably named after her aunt Sarah "Sallie" Pemberton.
Charles Noden George was born 21 Nov 1791 (per the alleged Family Bible record, and confirmed by his own Family Bible), in Sullivan Co, TN. He was obviously named after his uncle Charles Noden.
Charles N. George married Celia Smith in Carter Co, TN in 1816. Celia was a 1st cousin to Charles Noden George's step mother Nancy Dugger, that may explain how they met. Charles N. George lived for a few years in Carter Co, TN, later moving to Blount Co, TN, then to Monroe Co, TN in the 1840's. In the early 1850's he moved to Cherokee Co, NC (now Graham Co, NC), where he died in 1869.
See his own page for additional information.
Hugh George was born 1 Aug 1793 (per the alleged Family Bible), probably in Sullivan Co, TN. The only record we have of Hugh is his entry from the supposed bible record. He was undoubtedly named for James Jordan George's brother Hugh George. He probably died young, as he was not named in the 1824 records naming James J. George's heirs.
Elizabeth George was born 22 Feb 1796 (per the alleged Family Bible), in Sullivan Co, TN. Elizabeth was probably home with her parents for the 1800 and 1810 census, though those records are now lost. She was probably named for her mother Elizabeth Pemberton George.
Elizabeth George married Samuel McConkey in Sullivan Co, TN sometime before ca 1815. Samuel was born ca 1794/95 (per 1850 census) in Washington County, Virginia (per 1850 census). I don't know who his parents were.
On 12 May 1818 Samuel McConkey of Sullivan County, purchased 110 acres on the Holston River in Carter Co, TN from Hughes Warden. (Carter Co, TN Deed Book C page 232)
On 7 Apr 1823, Samuel McConkey of Sullivan Co, TN sold the 110 acres in Carter Co, TN to Martin Booher Sr. Witness was John R. Delaney. (Carter Co, TN Deed Book C page 601).
On 17 Aug 1824 Samuel McConkey and wife Elizabeth were named in the deed where James Jordan George's children by his first wife settled their portion of his estate. (Sullivan Co, TN Deed Book 10 page 112).
Samuel McConkey was listed on the 1830 census in Sullivan Co, TN on the same page with brother-in-law Peter Hunt.

I have not found them in 1840 yet, though they might have been in TN still. They moved to Edgar Co, Illinois at some point between 1840 and 1850.
Samuel and Elizabeth were listed on the 1850 census in Edgar Co, Illinois. I couldn't quite make out the birth place of the youngest children. It might have said "Anderson TN".

Both Samuel and Elizabeth were dead before 24 Jan 1859, for a deed of that date named three of their heirs (James S. McConkey, Elizabeth P. Gray and Sarah J. McConkey) in regards to the Ezekiel Pemberton estate (Elizabeth's Uncle).
I found some of the children still in Edgar County for the 1860 census.
Nancy George was born 21 Oct 1797 (per the alleged Family Bible), in Sullivan Co, TN. Nancy was probably home with her parents for the 1800 and 1810 census, though those records are now lost. She was probably named for her aunt Nancy Pemberton.
Nancy George married Peter Hunt ca 1817 in Sullivan Co, TN. Peter was born 1 Jun 1796 (per tombstone) in Virginia. I don't know what county he was born in, nor who his parents were.
They were probably listed on the 1820 census, but that record is lost for all of eastern Tennessee.
In February 1824, Charles N. George (Peter's brother-in-law) sold him 75 acres on Stoney Creek, in Carter Co, TN. Witnesses were John Keys, Benjamin Brewer and W. B. Carter (Carter Co, TN Deed Book C page 602).
On 17 Aug 1824 Peter Hunt and wife Nancy were named in the deed where James Jordan George's children by his first wife settled their portion of his estate. (Sullivan Co, TN Deed Book 10 page 112).
Peter Hunt was listed on the 1830 census in Sullivan Co, TN on the same page with brother-in-law Samuel McConkey.

I don't yet have Peter Hunt's listing for the 1840 census. I'm sure they were in Sullivan Co, TN though.
Peter and family were in Sullivan for the 1850 census.

Peter and Nancy remained in Sullivan Co, TN, but I don't have their 1860 or 1870 census entries yet.
Nancy died on 17 Oct 1874 (a reading of her tombstone says 17 Oct 1824, but that can't be right). Peter died 5 Apr 1878. They are buried at the Beeler Cemetery in Sullivan Co, TN.
Frances George was born 3 Aug 1799 (per the alleged Family Bible), in Sullivan Co, TN. She was probably named after her aunt Frances George (1760). She was probably home with her parents for the 1800, 1810 and 1820 census, but those census records are lost.
Frances was still single in 1824, when named in the estate division deed with her brothers and sisters.
She married Daniel Odell sometime between 1824 and 1826, presumably in Sullivan Co, TN. Daniel was born ca 1793/94 in Tennessee. I don't know who his parents were.
I don't have them on the 1830 or 1840 census yet, though they were probably in Sullivan Co, TN.
For the 1850 census, they were in Sullivan Co, TN.

I'm not sure where I got this date from, but I show that Frances George Odell died in July 1850, in Sullivan Co, TN. I need to do additional research on this family.
Their children William G. Odell, James J. Odell, Andrew J. Odell and Elizabeth Odell were all named as heirs of Elizabeth Pemberton George in the Thomas Pemberton estate (between 1858 and 1874). Apparently that means that Thomas and Ezekiel were dead by then.
Their son James J. Odell served as a State Senator (or Representative) in 1851, and later became a Lieutenant Colonel during the Civil War.
Eliza George was born 14 Jun 1802 (per the alleged Family Bible) or more likely on 4 Jun 1802 (her mother's date of death), in Sullivan Co, TN. Her mother died about the same time, so possibly from complications due to childbirth. I don't know who "Eliza" may have been named for.
Eliza George was still single in 1824 when the heirs of James Jordan George were dividing his estate.
She married Clark B. Caywood sometime between 1824 and 1832, probably in Sullivan Co, TN. Clark was born ca 1798/99 in Tennessee. I don't know who his parents were.
I don't have them yet on the 1830 or 1840 census, though I suspect they were in Sullivan Co, TN.
For the 1850 census, they were in Sullivan Co, TN. They had the interesting distinction of being the first family listed on the 1850 census in Sullivan Co, TN, on page 1, household # 1.

I have a death date of 1858 for Clark Caywood, but I'm not sure what my source is. I think this was shared with me by another researcher. I don't have a death date for Eliza George Caywood.
The estate division of Thomas Pemberton named the heirs of his sister Elizabeth Pemberton George, and Eliza was not mentioned. In the legal notes, she was mentioned and that both she and her husband Clark Cawood had died leaving no heirs. Now this was either a mistake, or else all of their children died by then (sometime between 1858 and 1874).
Mary George was born 15 Aug 1806 (per the alleged Family Bible), in Sullivan Co, TN. She may have been named for her aunt Mary George and / or her grandmother Mary Hall Dugger.
Mary George married Hugh Mahaffey (Jr) on 3 Aug 1826 in Sullivan Co, TN. He was from neighboring Washington Co, VA and that is where they resided after marriage. I have not done much research on this branch of the family. My data for their family, including most of the birth, death and marriage dates, comes from two descendants: Betsy Sullivan and Mary Hardy Mills.
They were listed on the 1850 census in Washington Co, VA, but their entry was too dim for me to read.
Hugh died in Washington Co, VA on 19 May 1863, and Mary same place on 27 Apr 1886.
Edna George was born 8 Oct 1808 (per the alleged Family Bible), in Sullivan Co, TN.
Edna George never married. She was with her sister Margaret George Jobe for the 1850 census in Carter Co, TN, listed as "Lunatic". She was with them still in 1860 as well, same county.
I'm not sure when she died.
Charlotte George was born 15 Dec 1810 (per the alleged Family Bible), in Sullivan Co, TN.
Charlotte George married Matthew Yarrow Akree on 3 Nov 1829 in Sullivan Co, TN. Most of the dates I have for this family are courtesy of Helen C. Davis, a descendant.
I don't have Matthew and Charlotte on the 1830 and 1840 census, but I suspect they were in Sullivan Co, TN. They were there for the 1850 census.

Charlotte George Akree died on 4 Apr 1851 in Sullivan Co, TN, and Matthew died on 7 Jul 1878.
Sarah D. George was born 13 Jul 1813 (per the alleged Family Bible), in Sullivan Co, TN.
Sarah was single in 1824 when her father's estate was divided. She seemed to be with her widowed mother for the 1830 census. Other than that, I have no record of her. She may have died, or married someone not know to us.
James Dugger George was born 9 Jun 1816 (per the alleged Family Bible), in Sullivan Co, TN.
James Dugger George was obviously named in honor of his father and mother. He was apparently home with his widowed mother for the 1830 census. I'm not sure where the family was in 1840.
James Dugger George married Mary Ann Taylor sometime in the early 1840's, presumably in Sullivan Co, TN. She died before the 1850 census. I don't know what the proof is that this was his wife's maiden name.
I found James Dugger George on the 1850 census in Johnson Co, TN, residing with his Uncle William Dugger. However, his children were not with him, except for a daughter Mary Susan age 6. His wife's family was from Washington Co, VA, so it is possible the rest of his children were with maternal grandparents there.
On 25 Sep 1851 James D. George sold land to his brother-in-law John Jobe. I don't have the details. (Sullivan Co, TN Deed Book 17 page 109).
On 13 Apr 1853 James D. George's land was sold by the Sheriff to Daniel Miller. I don't have the details yet, but this was presumably for back taxes. (Sullivan Co, TN Deed Book 17 page 256).
Apparently, James D. George died before 24 Dec 1855, for on that date his daughter Mary S. George was listed as an orphan of James D. George and Mary his wife, deceased. Jackson G. Fellers was named guardian. (Washington Co, VA Guardian Bonds).
Somewhere along the way (many years ago) someone gave me a large list of children for James D. George, yet I've found nothing to date to prove any children other than Mary Susan George.
Margaret George was born 13 Sep 1818 (per the alleged Family Bible), in Sullivan Co, TN.
Margaret George was apparently home with her widowed mother for the 1830 census.
Margaret married John Jobe (also spelled Job) ca 1833 in Sullivan Co, TN. They resided in Carter Co, TN after marriage.
They were listed on the 1840 census in Carter Co, TN.

They were still there for the 1860 census. I didn't get a very good transcript for this one, as it came from a published version of the census. I'll get a better listing when I can.
John Jobe was not listed with them for the 1860 census, so apparently he died in the 1850's. I don't know when Margaret died.
William Jordan George was born 9 Jun 1821 (per the alleged Family Bible), in Sullivan Co, TN.
William J. George was apparently home with his widowed mother in 1830. I don't know where they were in 1840.
On 20 Aug 1842, William J. George made two separate deeds to Andrew W. Booher. The first was for 10 acres, 81 acres and 30 acres, the second for 75 acres and 100 acres on the Holston River. I don't have the details for this yet. (Sullivan Co, TN Deed Book 13 page 240 and 241)
Mary E. George, wife of Jefferson George (nephew of William J. George) stated that William J. George went into the Mexican War and never came back. I have not attempted to confirm whether or not William J. George served during that war or not. If so, he presumably died in the 1844/1848 timeframe, in Texas or somewhere in the west or possibly in Mexico.
The Sullivan Co, TN Deed Indexes show a deed dated 9 Dec 1857 from William J. George to John Claman for 1/8 of 118 acres on Big Creek. I haven't seen the deed yet, so I don't know if this was sold from his estate, or by him personally. If by him personally, then he obviously wasn't killed in the Mexican War. (Sullivan Co, TN Deed Book 19 page 298).
John Henderson George was born 29 Feb 1824 (per the alleged Family Bible), in Sullivan Co, TN.
John was apparently with his mother for the 1830 census. He was probably named in part for his uncle William Henderson.
On 8 Sep 1845 John H. George sold three tracts of land to his half brother-in-law Peter Hunt. I don't have the details yet. (Sullivan Co, TN Deed Book 14 page 210).
I didn't find John H. George on the 1850 census. He apparently was still living as of 1909. I don't know if he married or not.
He was a Doctor of some sort.
