I (Marty Grant) am a 6th Great Grand nephew of John George.
[NOTE: During the preparation of my book on this family I have found a lot of new information on this family that is not yet reflected in the commentary section of this website. I have placed a new Register Report in here though that does contain most of the new information. 12-22-2004.]
John George was born ca 1725 in Essex Co, VA He is a proven son of John George and Mary Jordan,
I base John George's birth (of circa 1725) on his first public record being in 1746, and assuming he was at least 21 then.
I have abstracted numerous court records in Caroline Co, VA for John George (Jr), but for some reason, I can't find my original references for them, so I can't quote book and page number, but I will retrieve that information as soon as I can relocate it.
On 9 Nov 1752, John George Jr was mentioned in Caroline Co, VA Court Minutes, when "Jack", a Negro boy belonging to him was judged to be 10 years old. (Caroline Co, VA Order Book 1746-1754 page 352)
When I locate the rest of my records for John George Jr in Caroline Co, VA, I'll add them to the web page.
John George married Frances --- before ca 1764, probably in Caroline Co, VA. I have no clues as to her maiden name. On some records, she is listed as "Fanny", a common nickname for Frances.
John and Frances moved to Pittsylvania Co, VA before 1767. His brother James, and several sisters, also moved there around the same time. They all lived on or near Allen's Creek, in the area on both sides of the county line between Pittsylvania and Halifax Co, VA.
On 25 Feb 1767, John George (with Benjamin Lankford, Joseph Dejarnett and John Faris), witnessed a deed in Halifax Co, VA between William Bowman Jr and wife Rachel, to James Pemberton DeJarnet (John's brother-in-law) for land on the south side of the North Fork of Allen's Creek. On 25 Sep 1767, in Pittsylvania court, a deed from Peter Bowman to John George was proven by oaths of two of the witnesses. I didn't find this original deed, so I'm not sure of the details. I feel fairly sure this was John George Sr purchasing land, and not John Jr. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Court Minutes Book 1 page 12).
On 27 Nov 1767, in Pittsylvania court, David Caldwell sued John George for Debt. "Judgment by default against the defendant and James George the security for his appearance for the sum of Five pounds ten shillings and costs". This shows his brother James was his security. On 23 Jan 1777 John George purchased land from John Ferrell in Pittsylvania Co, VA. The land was 100 acres on the north fork of Allen's Creek, joining Daniel Morgan, Frances Short, William Doss, and "Including plantation where John George now lives". Witnesses were Joshua Stone, Edmund Taylor and Joel Short. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Deed Book 4 page 279).
The above, was the first record I found for John George owning land in Pittsylvania County, VA. He was undoubtedly renting that property prior to that, possibly as far back as 1767 when he first moved to the county.

On 1 Aug 1777, John George wrote a letter to his father John George in Caroline Co, VA, mentioning Reuben (his brother), and John Gatewood, and asking about "Miss Southworth" and asking about how liquor is selling. ("The George Family Record", Thomas R. George, 1978, page 14 and 15).
On 2 Aug 1777 John George (with Benjamin Lankford,
Joseph Roberts, William Todd, John Dier and Joshua Stone) witnessed a dower
relinquishment from Elisabeth Harness, wife of John Harness.
(Pittsylvania Co, VA Deed Book 4 page 421).
On 27 Feb 1778, John George (with Joseph Akin, John Wilson, William Wilkinson
and Joseph Stewart) witnessed a deed between William Peters Martin of Halifax to
James Meade of Pittsylvania, for land on Banister River.
(Pittsylvania Co, VA Deed Book 4 page 466).
On 14 Jan 1779, Frances Short of Pittsylvania, sold 189 acres to John George, land on Upper fork of Allen's Creek, adjoining Daniel Morgan, John George and William Doss. Witnesses were: John Vaughn, John Clever, John Solomon and George Morgan. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Court Minutes Book 5 page 155).
On 1 Sep 1780 John George received a land Grant in Pittsylvania Co, VA of 272 acres on the west Fork of Allen's Creek, adjoining Daniel Morgan. (Virginia Land Grants Book D page 149).

Witnesses were: Joshua Stone, James Jordan George (John's nephew), John Lumpkin, William Easley, and John Adams. (John sold this land on 17 Sep 1782). (Pittsylvania Co, VA Deed Book 6 page 225).
John George was listed on the 1782 Tax list in Pittsylvania Co, VA. He was taxed for 9 whites, and 10 blacks. These 9 whites consisted of himself, his wife, and seven children (presumably).
On 17 Sep 1782 John George sold his 200 acres on Strawberry Creek to Edward Long. There were no witnesses. This is the land he purchased on 1 Aug 1781. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Deed Book 6 page 379).
On 16 Aug 1784 James Johnson of Pittsylvania, sold 299 acres to John George of Pittsylvania. The land was bounded by John George, William Henderson, William Verons, and Thomas Carter. Allen's' Creek was not mentioned, but that is probably where the land was. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Deed Book 7 page 326).
John George was listed on the 1785 tax list in Pittsylvania Co, VA. He was taxed for 10 whites, 1 house, and 6 other buildings. The 10 whites were (presumably) himself, his wife Frances, and 8 children.
On 13 Aug 1785 Joel Short of Pittsylvania, sold 100 acres to John George of Pittsylvania. The land was on the North side of Banister River, bounded by Morgan. Witnesses were: Joshua Stone, Will Todd, Dudley Glass and Will George (John's son). (John sold this piece of land on 15 Jan 1786). (Pittsylvania Co, VA Deed Book 7 page 472).
On 15 Aug 1785, John Owen, Gentleman, Late Sheriff of Pittsylvania Co, VA, sold 49 acres to John George. The land was on West Fork of Allen's Creek bounded by Joseph Clark. The land belonged to Peter Pucket of Prince Edward Co, VA, and was sold for taxes owed. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Deed Book 7 page 478).
On 9 Dec 1785 John George wrote a letter to his brother Reuben George in Caroline Co, VA and in it he mentioned "brother Woolfolk", probably referring to his brother-in-law Robert Woolfolk, and asked about "Misses Southworth", and he inquired about John Anderson and Peggy Collins (don't know who these two are). ("The George Family Record", Thomas R. George, 1978, page 15).
On 15 Jan 1786, John George of Pittsylvania, sold
100 acres on North Side of Bannister River to Haynes Morgan. The land was
bounded by Haynes Morgan, Joshua Short, and was the same land purchased from
Joel Short on 13 Aug 1785 (see above). (Pittsylvania Co, VA Deed
Book 7 page 551).
On 17 Jun 1786, Thomas Davis of Pittsylvania, sold 150 acres to John George of
Pittsylvania. The land was on Stinking River, bounded by Benjamin Tambor,
Crispin Shelton, John Barber, and Joshua Stone. (He sold this land on 13 Oct
1786). (Pittsylvania Co, VA Deed Book 7 page 664).
In August 1786, in Pittsylvania Court, Isaac
Clement, executor of Benjamin Clement, deceased, sued William Baber and John
George for debt. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Court Minutes Book 3 page
49).
On 13 Oct 1786, John George of Pittsylvania, sold 250 acres on Stinking
River to Abraham Shelton. (This was land he purchased on 17 Jun 1786 from Thomas
Davis, though that deed said 150 acres, I may have read one of them
wrong). The land was bounded by Benjamin Tambor, Crispin Shelton, John Barber
and Joshua Stone. Witnesses were: D. Roberts (John's
son-in-law), Will George (his son), Frederick Shelton and
Crispin Shelton Jr. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Deed Book 7 page 696).
John George apparently moved from his Pittsylvania Co, VA land to Halifax Co, VA around 1787. His Allen's Creek property may have been in both counties, but in this same year (see below) he purchased land in Halifax Co, VA.
John George was listed twice on the 1787 Virginia census. His primary entry was in Halifax Co, VA. He was listed with 1 male over 21 (himself), and another male over 21: Matt Bates (possibly a son-in-law?), and another male over 21: Matt Bilbo (his son-in-law). He was charged with 3 blacks age 16 and over, 6 blacks under 16, 1 horse, and 4 cattle.
John George was also listed on the 1787 Virginia census in Pittsylvania Co, VA. He was listed as "not tithable", since he didn't reside on that land, however, he was charged for 2 blacks age 16 and up, 1 black under 16, 2 horses, and 3 cattle.
In March 1787, in Pittsylvania Court, Shadrick Turner sued John George and Joseph Roberts for debt. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Court Minutes Book 3 page 62).
On 6 Jun 1787, Joseph Gill Jr of Halifax Co, VA, sold land to John George "of Halifax". I didn't note the acreage, but the land was on the south side of Banester (sic) River, near the Court House. Witnesses were: H. Goare, D. Roberts (John's son-in-law), Mat Bilbo (Son-in-law), and Will George (Son). (Halifax Co, VA Deed Book 14 page 174).
On 7 Jun 1787, John George received a 50 acre land
grant in Pittsylvania Co, VA on the south fork of Allen's Creek adjoining
Jenkins and Todd. (Virginia Grants Book 12 page 149).
On 1 Aug 1787, John George "of Halifax", sold land in Pittsylvania Co, VA to
Abraham Shelton. I didn't get the acreage, but the land was on Allen's Creek,
bounded by William Doss, Haynes Morgan, Charles Crenshaw, Richard Todd, William
Todd, Daniel Jenkins, Peter Pucket, William Hamblett, James Henderson, and
Joseph Farris. Witnesses were: Vincent Shelton,
James George Jr (nephew), W.
Shelton and Fred Shelton. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Deed Book 8 page
88).
The above deed might represent all of John George's Allen's Creek land (and there was quite alot of it). I'll have to read it again to see if the acreage was given. A relinquishment (dated 21 Sep 1789), by Frances, wife of John George, appears to refer to the above deed and states it was for 1400 acres.
In March 1788, in Pittsylvania Court, William Glass sued Martin Armstrong and John George, in Chancery. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Court Minutes Book 3 page 82).
In May 1788, in Pittsylvania Court, David Hunt sued John George for debt. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Court Minutes Book 3 page 95).
In August 1788, in Pittsylvania Court, James Bennett filed an Injunction against James Codey and John George. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Court Minutes Book 3 page 99).
In August 1788, in Pittsylvania Court, John George sued John Terrell for debt. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Court Minutes Book 3 page 99).
On 27 Aug 1788, John George and Fanny George, his wife, of Halifax, sold their 100 acres in Halifax adjoining the Court House, to William Barksdale of Town of Petersburg, for 200 pounds. Land was described as "where said John George now lives". Witnesses were John B. Scott, Richard Venable, J. Williams and John Roberts. (Halifax Co, VA Deed Book 14 page 304).
The above deed seems to be the last of the property John George owned, as he had previously sold all of his Pittsylvania County land.
On 10 Dec 1788, John George (with Cornelius McHaney, his brother-in-law, Richard Craddock and Richard George, his cousin) witnessed a deed in Pittsylvania between John Ballenger of Pittsylvania, to Jonadab George, of Halifax (John's 1st cousin) for land Straitstone Creek. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Deed Book 8 page 412).
On 22 Feb 1789, John George wrote his brother Reuben George in Caroline Co, VA, and told him of his money problems. He asked if Reuben would purchase 800 acres of good land from him. (Apparently, Reuben did not do so) ("The George Family Record", Thomas R. George, 1978, page 15).
In March 1789, in Pittsylvania Court, Archibald Campbell and John George sued Arthur Keeze for debt. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Court Minutes Book 3 page 108).
On 31 Mar 1789, John George (with William George, his son, Thomas B. Jones, Matt Bilbo, his son-in-law, and Crispin Shelton Jr), witnessed a deed from James George Jr (John's nephew) to William Shelton, for land on Green Rock Creek. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Deed Book 9 page 160).
In May 1789, Shore M. Cannico sued John George for debt. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Court Minutes Book 3 page 113).
Also in May 1789, Samuel Callend sued John George for debt. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Court Minutes Book 3 page 113).
On 10 Jun 1789, John's brother James George, in Pittsylvania, wrote a letter to their brother Reuben George in Caroline, mentioning John several times. He said that John was "in a bad state of health with a cansor in his nose ..." He also mentions that Reuben had sent his son down for some money John owed him (Reuben), but James said there was slim chance, as John had serious money problems, and that he had deeded all his land to someone for a loan, and had paid it back, but had not gotten the deed back (this is referring to the deed to Abraham Shelton for 1400 acres, apparently all of John's land). ("The George Family Record", Thomas R. George, 1978, page 16).
On 21 Sep 1789, in Pittsylvania Co, VA, William Todd, Joshua Stone and Benjamin Lankford, gentlemen, Justices for the county, proved that Frances, wife of John George, relinquished her dower rights in the deed to Abraham Shelton for 1400 acres (See deed dated 27 Aug 1788) (Pittsylvania Co, VA Deed Book 8 page 441).
In November 1789, in Pittsylvania Court, Joseph W. Haynes sued John George for debt. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Court Minutes Book 3 page 117).
John George was probably not listed on the 1790
census in Pittsylvania Co, VA, but unfortunately, this census was lost for the
entire state. It seems he was in GA already by 1790, and that census was also
lost.
On 20 May 1790, in Pittsylvania Court, Thomas Hope sued John George and Joseph
Roberts for debt. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Court Minutes Book 3 page
112).
John George and family left Pittsylvania Co, VA and went to Greene Co, GA in September 1789. He may have gone earlier and purchased land, as "John George" is on the 1789 Tax list in Greene Co, GA in Autrey District. Also listed is a Travis George and William George, both in the same district. However, this probably wasn't the same John George. I feel fairly strongly that John, Travis and William (of 1789 tax list) were all three sons of William George (1725-1800) and Mary Whitson who lived in Greene Co, GA and Wilkes (later Oglethorpe) Co, GA at that time. William was a descendant of Nicholas George of Lancaster Co, VA.
In January 1790, John's sister, Mary George McHaney, wrote a letter to their brother-in-law Robert Woolfolk and mentioned John, saying
"My brother John is not dead with out he is dead very lately. He marched into the state of Georgia sometime in the month of September, and we received a letter from him dated last month. He was very bad with cancer. It has broke out in his mouth. He has got severl slaves that no one can get ..." ("The George Family Record", Thomas R. George, 1978, page 16).
John George died sometime prior to November 1790, in Greene Co, GA for on that date, in Pittsylvania Court, he was sued by Blon Barksdale, but the case was dismissed for "John George is now deceased". (Pittsylvania Co, VA Court Minutes Book 3 page 137).
However, Greene Co, GA records show a John George and wife Frances in records as late August 1792. However, as mentioned before, there was another John George in Greene Co, GA, and he also had a wife named Frances (Freeman)! This John was born 1747 in Stafford Co, VA and owned land in Greene Co, GA and apparently also resided in neighboring Wilkes (soon to become Oglethorpe) Co, GA. Since this other John and Frances were in the same county, it is possible to mix up their records, so we must be careful.
On 15 Jan 1793, John's son William George sold his mother Frances George several Negroes and household furniture and livestock (this may have been his share of the inheritance, or perhaps not). The Negroes were: Emanuel, Dinah, George, Jim, Little George, Tom and Dick. Witnesses were J. Cook and John Wallace. (Greene Co, GA Deed Book E page 735, thanks to Jean Gayle for sharing this with me)
Monte George recently found some more Greene Co, GA records for this family:
On 3 Oct 1795 Frances George of Greene Co, GA gave to Matthew Bilbo (her son-in-law), all her land and negroes (Emanuel, Dinah and Jane) and other items. (Greene Co, GA Deed Book F page 214, thanks to Monte George for sharing it).
On the same date (3 Oct 1795) Frances George (spelled Francis) gave a negro boy named Dick to her son Jordan George, for Love and affection. (Greene Co, GA Deed Book F page 318, thanks to Monte George for sharing it).
Frances George died sometime after 1795, presumably in Greene Co, GA. More research is needed there.
John George and Frances --- may have had as many as 8 children, based on the 1782 and 1784 tax lists. However, I've only been able to identify 4 of them. Presumably, these four, and the others, all went to GA with the family in 1790. Monte George has information on his website showing several possible connections between the John George family and the George's of Pendleton District, SC and Lincoln Co, TN.
William George was born before ca 1764 in Caroline or Pittsylvania Co, VA.
On 13 Aug 1785, Will George witnessed a deed between Joel Short to John George, his father. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Deed Book 7 page 472).
On 13 Oct 1786, Will George witnessed a deed between his father John George and Abraham Shelton. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Deed Book 7 page 696).
On 6 Jun 1787, Will George and others witnessed a deed in Halifax Co, VA from Joseph Gill Jr to John George. (Halifax Co, VA Deed Book 14 page 174).
On 31 Mar 1789, John George, William George, his son, Thomas B. Jones, Matt Bilbo, his son-in-law, and Crispin Shelton Jr), witnessed a deed from James George Jr (John's nephew) to William Shelton, for land on Green Rock Creek. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Deed Book 9 page 160).
I believe that William George went with his parents to Greene Co, GA in September 1789. I need to do more research on the family there. A William George was listed on the 1789 tax list in Greene Co, GA in Autrey District, as was a John George and a Travis George. I'm fairly sure that the 1789 John, William and Travis were brothers to each other and sons of William George and Mary Whitson of neighboring Wilkes (later Oglethorpe) Co, GA.
On 15 Jan 1793, William George sold his mother Frances George several Negroes and household furniture and livestock (this may have been his share of the inheritance, or perhaps not). The Negroes were: Emanuel, Dinah, George, Jim, Little George, Tom and Dick. Witnesses were J. Cook and John Wallace. (Greene Co, GA Deed Book E page 735, thanks to Jean Gayle for sharing this with me)
A William George was listed on the 1797 tax list in Greene Co, GA in Melton District.
Mary George was born before ca 1765 possibly in Caroline Co, VA. I have no direct proof that Mary is John's daughter, but the circumstantial evidence seems strong.
On 20 Mar 1786, Daniel Roberts obtained a marriage bond in Pittsylvania Co, VA to marry Mary George. Joseph Akin was surety (bondsman).
On 13 Oct 1786, Daniel Roberts witnessed a deed between his father-in-law John George to Abraham Shelton. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Deed Book 7 page 696).
Daniel Roberts moved to Halifax Co, VA when John George did, in 1787, or perhaps he already lived there before John George moved there.
Daniel Roberts was listed on the 1787 Virginia census in Halifax Co, VA. He was charged with one male over 21 (himself), 1 black age 16 and up, 1 black under 16, 3 horses and 9 cattle.
On 6 Jun 1787, Daniel Roberts and others witnessed a deed in Halifax Co, VA from Joseph Gill Jr to John George. (Halifax Co, VA Deed Book 14 page 174).
Daniel Roberts and family may have left VA for GA in 1790 when John George did. I haven't followed up on this, to see if this is the case or not.
Edna George was born before ca 1767 in Pittsylvania Co, VA. I have no direct proof that Edna is John's daughter, but the circumstantial evidence seems strong.
On 30 Apr 1788, Matt Bilbo obtained a marriage bond in Halifax Co, VA to marry Edna George.
Matt Bilbo had already been associated with the John George family prior to that. He was living with John George in 1787, and listed with him on the 1787 census in Halifax Co, VA, with John George paying his taxes.
On 6 Jun 1787, Matt Bilbo and others witnessed a deed in Halifax Co, VA from Joseph Gill Jr to John George. (Halifax Co, VA Deed Book 14 page 174).
On 31 Mar 1789, John George, William George, his son, Thomas B. Jones, Matt Bilbo, his son-in-law, and Crispin Shelton Jr), witnessed a deed from James George Jr (John's nephew) to William Shelton, for land on Green Rock Creek. (Pittsylvania Co, VA Deed Book 9 page 160).
Monte George found a record in Greene Co, GA showing that Matthew Bilbo was there with the George family, so they did apparently move to Greene Co, GA when John and Fanny George did (late 1789).
Jordan George was born before ca 1774 in Pittsylvania Co, VA. I didn't have this child until Monte George discovered him in Greene Co, GA records.
On 3 Oct 1795 Frances George (spelled Francis) gave a negro boy named Dick to her son Jordan George, for Love and affection. (Greene Co, GA Deed Book F page 318, thanks to Monte George for sharing it).
So far, this is the only record I have for Jordan George. He was obviously named for his paternal grandmother Mary Jordan George.
