Lafayette George and Rachel Hensley of Monroe Co, TN and Cherokee and Graham Co, NC

Lafayette George was born 17 Feb 1830 in Blount Co, TN (per the 1860 census record). Lafayette is a proven son of Charles Noden George and Celia Smith. He was listed in their family bible (in possession of Charles Jefferson George of Midland, TX) as Lafayette George born 17th day Feby A.D. 1830.

Lafayette was apparently home with his parents in Blount Co, TN for the 1830 and 1840 census records. The family moved to Monroe Co, TN after 1842 and remained there a number of years.

Lafayette was still at home with his parents for the 1850 census in Monroe Co, TN.

On 11 Feb 1851 Lafayette George obtained a marriage bond in Monroe Co, TN to marry Rachel B. Hensley (listed as Hensly on bond). They were married on 13 Feb 1851. Rachel was born 9 Feb 1829 in Monroe Co, TN, a daughter of Samuel Hensley and Nancy Johnston Hensley.

They apparently moved to Cherokee Co, NC between 1853 and 1855. They moved into the Tulula (various spellings on old records) Creek area, what is now Graham County.

On 18 Mar 1858 Lafayette and his brother Washington George purchased 102 acres in Cherokee Co, NC on Tallula Creek, from David J. McDaniel and wife Sarah P. McDaniel. They paid $700 for the land. Witnesses were Joseph J. Colvard, James Colvard and William C. McDaniel. (Cherokee Co, NC Deed Book 9 page 220. Also recorded in Graham Co, NC Deed Book D page 176).

Lafayette George and family were listed on the 1860 census in Cherokee Co, NC in Cheoah Township, just two houses from his brother Washington. Their father Charles N. George was listed also, but not nearby. The 1860 census taker for Cherokee County was thoughtful enough to include the county of birth for each person.

Lafayette George was also listed on the 1860 Agriculture Census in Cherokee Co, NC. He was listed with 20 acres cultivated land, Stock =17, Hogs = 20, Wheat = 0, Corn = 400, Tobacco = 0, Wool = 0, Potato = 10, Butter = 50, Flax = 0, an Molasses = 10. I'm not sure what the units of measure were for each column.

For the Civil War, Lafayette George enlisted in Company H, 69th Regiment, NC Troops (CSA) on 23 Jul 1862 as a 2nd Lieutenant.

He participated in the Battle of Winchester, Virginia on 19 Sep 1864, and received a serious wound to his leg. He died two days later on 21 Sep 1864 while his leg was being amputated. He was presumably buried near Winchester, VA.

The history of his Civil War Unit is recorded in "North Carolina Troops Volume 4" pages 728-761, by W.W. Stringfield, Lieutenant Colonel.

The photo below is of Lafayette George in his Confederate Uniform, ca 1862. This is from an old Tintype photo and the original is in pretty bad shape. I got this from Evelyn Tharp, who in turn got it from Laura Roberts George. I have cleaned it up as best as I could.

Lafayette's widow Rachel Hensley George was listed as head of household on the 1870 census in Cherokee Co, NC, in Cheoah Township.

In 1870, several deeds were made among the heirs of both Washington George and Charles Noden George. Rachel, as guardian to Lafayette's children, was named on several of these.

On 30 Mar 1870 an agreement was made among the heirs of Washington George, deceased, and C. N. George, deceased, to equally divide all their property amongst them. It was signed by Celia George (widow of Charles N. George), and Jefferson George, John Harrison and wife Elizabeth Harrison, Payton Colvard and wife Louisa Colvard, Charles L. White, Rachel B. George, (guardian of James George, Charles George, Nancy E. George an Jefferson George, infant heirs of Lafayette George, deceased). Witnesses to the deed were James M. Phillips and Reuben Carver. (Cherokee Co, NC Deed Book 13 page 100).

On 1 Aug 1870, Celia George, Jefferson George, R. B. George (Rachel), all of Cherokee Co, NC, and John Harrison and wife Elizabeth of Monroe Co, TN, and C. L. White of Washington Co, IL sold 45 acres of their inherited land to P. S. Colvard and wife Louisa (George) Colvard. This was signed by each of them, except for C. L. White, who presumably was home in Illinois, his signature was by Jefferson George, as his agent. "M. E. George" also signed, this was Jefferson's wife. Joseph T. Young was the witness. (Cherokee Co, NC Deed Book 13 page 198)

Also on 1 Aug 1870, Celia George, Jefferson George, P. S. Colvard and wife Louisa, all of Cherokee Co, NC; and C. L. White of Washington Co, IL; sold land (acreage?) to John Harrison and wife Elizabeth of Monroe Co, TN. Rachel wasn't named, but she signed the deed with the rest. "M. E. George" (Jefferson's wife) also signed. Joseph T. Young was witness. (Cherokee Co, NC Deed Book 13 page 202)

Again on 1 Aug 1870, some of the land was divided. Jefferson George, R. B. George (Rachel), P. S. Colvard and wife Louisa, of Cherokee Co, NC, and John Harrison and wife Elizabeth of Monroe Co, TN and C. L. White of Washington Co, IL sold 51 acres to Celia George for $400. Joseph T. Young was the witness. (Cherokee Co, NC Deed Book 13 page 205)

Again on 1 Aug 1870, R. B. George (Rachel), Celia George, P. S. Colvard and wife Louisa Colvard of Cherokee Co, NC; John Harrison and wife Elizabeth of Monroe Co, TN and C. L. White of Washington Co, IL sold Jefferson George 51 acres. Joseph T. Young was the witness. (Cherokee Co, NC Deed Book 13 page 209).

Again on 1 Aug 1870 Celia George, Jefferson George, P. S. Colvard and wife Louisa Colvard, of Cherokee Co, NC, and John Harrison and wife Elizabeth of Monroe Co, TN and C. L. White of Washington Co, IL sold 79 acres to Rachel B. George. Witness was Joseph T. Young. This deed gives Rachel 79 acres in addition to the land of Lafayette's that she already had (51 acres). (Cherokee Co, NC Deed Book 13 page 212).

Again on 1 Aug 1870 R. B. George (Rachel), Celia George, Jefferson George, P. S. Colvard and wife Louisa of Cherokee Co, NC; sold 153 acres to C. L. White of Washington Co, IL for $400. Joseph T. Young was the witness. (Cherokee Co, NC Deed Book 13 page 216).

On 20 Sep 1870 P. S. Colvard and wife Louisa sold Rachel B. George all their interest in the lands of Washington George. Witness was J. H. George (I'm not sure who this is). (Cherokee Co, NC Deed Book 13 page 455 also recorded in Graham Co, NC Deed Book D page 179 though that one is dated 26 Sep 1870, same deed though)

On 14 Dec 1870 Jefferson George and wife M. E. George of Macon Co, NC sold Rachel (R. B. George) a tract of land formerly belonging to Washington George. I didn't note the acreage, but the land was called the "Joseph Sherrill lands". (Cherokee Co, NC Deed Book 13 page 224 and also recorded in Graham Co, NC Deed Book D page 178).

On 7 Nov 1873 widow Rachel B. Hensley George (listed as Rachel George), age 36, married James C. Cooper, age 58, in Graham Co, NC. Like Rachel, James C. Cooper had been previously married and had several children.

On 11 Mar 1874 Jefferson George and wife Mary George of Macon Co, NC, sold land to Rachel B. Cooper of Graham Co, NC. The land was described as "where she now lives" being known as the land of C. L. White, as heired from Washington George. (Graham Co, NC Deed Book D page 181)

James and Rachel and family were listed on the 1900 census in Graham Co, NC, residing with son Thomas Jefferson "Jeff" George.

The picture below shows James C. Cooper and wife Rachel Hensley George Cooper, ca 1905.

James C. Cooper died on 11 Jul 1904 in Graham Co, NC. Rachel died on 11 Sep 1909 in Graham Co, NC. They are buried side by side at the Old Mother Cemetery (Cheoah Church) in Robbinsville, in Graham Co, NC. They both have tall thin markers. I've visited their graves several times. Many other relatives are close by them.

Children

Lafayette George and Rachel Hensley had 5 children, and Rachel had one more child with her 2nd husband James C. Cooper. (James C. Cooper and his first wife Violet Mackey had at least 8 children).

James George was born 7 Dec 1852 in Monroe Co, TN. He was home with his parents for the 1860 census, and with his widowed mother in 1870.

James George was killed in an accident on 22 Feb 1877 at a Mill (don't know the details). He is buried at the Old Mother Cemetery (Cheoah Church) in Graham Co, NC.

Charles Noden George was born 14 Jun 1855 in Cherokee Co, NC (now Graham Co, NC). His birth date is recorded in his family bible in possession of Louie Portwood. Louie has shared a great deal of information on this family.

Charles was with his parents for the 1860 census, and with his widowed mother in 1870.

Charles left the Tulula Creek area and moved down to Peachtree community (east of Murphy, in Cherokee Co, NC). He apparently was living with (or near) his Uncle Jefferson George, who owned land in Peachtree at that time.

He married Mary Newman on 18 Apr 1878 in Cherokee Co, NC. This date is recorded in his family bible as well as in the Cherokee Co, NC Marriage register. On the register, he is given as Charles George, age 22 a resident of Peachtree, and Mary M. Newman, age 20 of Valleytown.

Charles and Mary were listed on the 1880 census in Cherokee Co, NC in Valleytown Township.

In 1884 or just before, Charles N. George and family moved to Towns Co, GA. I'm not sure which section.

On 19 Jan 1884, the heirs of Lafayette George sold part of their inheritance. T. J. George and wife Sarah E. George, P. A. Wiggins and Nancy E. Wiggins of Graham Co, NC and C. N. George and wife Mary George of Towns Co, GA sold land to R. S. Colvard. I didn't get the acreage, but it sold for $350. Witnesses were T. A. Carpenter, and J. C. Saunders. (Graham Co, NC Deed Book B page 453)

Sometime shortly after 1900, the family moved to Oklahoma, where both Charles and Mary died (in Tillman County). My data on this family (outside of North Carolina) comes mainly from Louie Portwood. The family bible records the births and marriages of all the children.

Nancy Emaline George was born 28 Feb 1958 in Cherokee Co, NC (now Graham Co, NC). The date is from her tombstone. She was home with her parents for the 1860 census, and with her widowed mother in 1870.

On 15 Feb 1879 Paton Wiggins (Payton Albert Wiggins) age 23 married Nancy George (age 22) in Graham Co, NC.

Nancy Emaline George Wiggins died on 5 Aug 1914 in Graham Co, NC. Payton Albert Wiggins died on 17 May 1936. They are both buried at the Old Mother Cemetery (Cheoah Church) in Graham Co, NC. I've been to their graves.

Sarah George was born ca 1860 in Cherokee Co, NC (now Graham Co, NC) and died while still an infant. I did not find a grave for her, she may be buried at Old Mother Cemetery (like so many other family members), but if so, her grave is unmarked.

Thomas Jefferson George was born 24 May 1862 in Cherokee Co, NC (now Graham Co, NC). He was only two when his father died.

On 21 Sep 1882 T. J. George age 20, married Elvira Carpenter (Sarah Elvira Carpenter) age 15 in Graham Co, NC.

Robert Ancil Cooper was born ca 1873/74 in Graham Co, NC. He was called "Bob". He was a half brother to the George's mentioned above. He was home with his parents for the 1880 census in Graham Co, NC.

I didn't find them on the 1900 census, though I suspect they were in Cherokee Co, NC, where they resided.

They were in Cherokee Co, NC in 1910, living in the Topton or Rhodo area (Valleytown Township).
