The author (Marty Grant) is a 8th Great Grand Nephew of John George. Note: The George family is fully documented in the author's book "George Family History" now available. Click link for details. On the current web pages I am only presenting the most interesting documentation. There is a great deal more available that is not included here. Most of the available source documentation is in the book mentioned above. There are also many acknowledgments to be made. The book contains them all. Some are listed here. John George was born between ca 1674 and ca 1678, probably in Isle of Wight County, Virginia. His approximate birth date is based on a couple of things. First, he was named in his Grandfather Col. John George's Will dated 2 Aug 1678. In the Will, Col. John stated that grandson John was under six years of age. That means he was born between ca 1672 and 1678. Furthermore, the Will of Col. John Lear dated 5 Nov 1695 indicated that John was under 21 then, so born no earlier than ca 1674. Combine the two documents and his birth year is ca 1674 to ca 1678. I doubt we can narrow it down any better. John George is not a proven child of Isaac George and Hester Fawdon, though it is generally believed that he belongs to them. He is a proven grandchild of Col. John George who was Isaac's father. In his Will, Col. John named grandson John but did not indicate who his parents were. Since Isaac was the only son named it is assumed he was the father. Isaac had at least one other child (Robert) and he was not named in Col. John's Will. It was fairly common in those days to only leave something to grandchildren who were named after you and not leave anything to the rest (unless their parents were dead.) John George may have married someone, name unknown, before ca 1693, though it isn't clear or not if that is the case. (This all depends on whether or not he is the father of William George. See below for more on William.) John George married Frances Servant on 16 Jun 1696 in Elizabeth City County, Virginia (that is across the James River from Isle of Wight County.) Frances was a child of Bertrond Servant and was named in his Will of 1 Nov 1707. John George may have lived in Elizabeth City awhile, or perhaps not. Unfortunately he didn't leave too many records in either Elizabeth City or Isle of Wight. John George was listed on the 1704 Quit rent list in Isle of Wight Co, VA with 200 acres. He was the only George in Isle of Wight County at that point. John George died sometime in 1711 for his Estate was ordered appraised that year in Isle of Wight (the date is not listed, other than the year.) [Isle of Wight Co, VA Wills and Deeds Book 2 page 527 from Chapman, Isle of Wight Wills.] Children of John George and Frances Servant. John George left no Will, so no definitive list of his children is available. One child (a daughter Frances George) is mentioned in the Will of Bertrond Servant (dated 1707), but no other children are listed, or proven by other sources. Mr. Boddie suggested that John George was the father of William George of Isle of Wight County. This could be true but the dates don't work too well. Based on analysis of the few documents available in William's name, he was born between ca 1689 and ca 1693. John George would have been no older than 15 at that earliest date, though if William were born closer to 1693 when John was approximately 19, then it works. Unfortunately I've seen no actual proof that links William George to John George other than they both lived in Isle of Wight County. Despite the lack of evidence, I'll continue to list William George as a son of John George, at least until some solid evidence can be found proving it or refuting it. If William is John's son, then he must be from a marriage prior to the 1696 marriage to Frances Servant. William George married Sarah Thorpp in Isle of Wight before 1711. He died ca 1720 in Isle of Wight County. Sarah married William Batts (or Batt) and soon moved to neighboring Surry County. They later went to Edgecombe County, North Carolina. William George and Sarah had two sons: Elias and William. Elias went to Edgecombe Co, NC in the 1750's and died there ca 1771 leaving several heirs. 1.
