Isaac George (1636-aft 1685) and Hester Fawdon of Isle of Wight County, Virginia

Isaac George was born 20 Feb 1635/36 [per Thomas Blakey Family Bible.] He was probably born in Charles City County, Virginia.

He is a proven child of Col. John George of Charles City Co, VA and Isle of Wight Co, VA, and was named in his father's Will of 1678.

Unlike his father John, Isaac George left us precious few records. We know from deeds that his wife was named Hester, and she is generally thought to be the daughter of Major George Fawdon of Isle of Wight Co, VA, but that isn't completely proven.

On 10 Apr 1654 Major George Fawdon gave 1000 acres of land to Isaac George, son of "Major John George." The land adjoined John George's land "on the upper side," and was a deed of gift, and if Isaac failed to reach the age of 21, it would revert to Fawdon. Based on Isaac's birth date, he was only 18 years old at this point. [Isle of Wight Co, VA Book A, John Bennett Boddie, Seventeenth Century Isle of Wight, p. 528.]

The question arises: Why did George Fawdon give a deed of gift to Isaac George? The most logical answer is that Isaac was his son-in-law, but there could be other reasons, though that is the most likely one.

On 17 Apr 1667 Lt. Colonel John George received a Grant for 360 acres of land on Cypress Swamp in Isle of Wight Co, VA, bordering land "formerly of Francis Place, but now Isaac George." Where did Isaac George get this land? Is it the land given to him by George Fawdon? That seems likely.

On 2 Aug 1678 Isaac's father John George made his Will naming various heirs including son "Isaack." He also named a grandson John George who is generally thought to be Isaac's son, though the Will does not say that.

On 8 Feb 1685 Isaac George of Upper Parish of Isle of Wight and Hester, his wife sold land to Lt. Colonel James Powell, a plantation where Isaac & Hester formerly lived, given him in Will of his father John George on Carrol Creek [this should probably say Castle Creek] in Upper Parish. Witness: Samuel Luck, Milehesador Duck, Mary Brasher. Robert Randall and Ann his wife assigns any claims to William Smith, administrator.* 9 Apr 1696. Witnesses: Richard Stone Joseph Caron. [Isle of Wight Deed Book 1 from Boddie, Seventeenth Century Isle of Wight. p. 626.]

* Robert Randall was married to Ann, the widow of Col. James Powell to whom the original deed was made. William Smith was probably the Administrator of Isaac George's estate. He was a brother-in-law of George Fawdon.

The above deed is the last record I've found for Isaac and Hester George. They may have died shortly after it was made or moved away somewhere. Some earlier researchers state (without documentation) that Isaac died in Middlesex County ca 1689. His son Robert George was in Middlesex by 1687, so Isaac and Hester may have moved there, but I've seen no proof so far.

There could be other children unidentified. There were a few unconnected Georges in the area who could be Isaac's sons. David George being the most notable. I have no evidence linking him to Isaac, but he was associated with Isaac's son Robert in Middlesex County. He might be a little too old to be Isaac's son, but I thought I would mention the possibility. If he isn’t a son, he certainly could be a nephew or cousin.

John remained in Isle of Wight a few years though he appears in the records of Surry and Elizabeth City County as well. He may have married twice, his first wife is unknown, but his second was Frances Servant, whom he married on 16 Jun 1696 in Elizabeth City County. She was a daughter of Bertrond Servant of Elizabeth City County.

John George died ca 1711 in Isle of Wight County. See his own page for additional information.

Thomas George was born ca 1681, probably in Isle of Wight Co., VA. He was named in a Surry Co., VA Court record of March 1701/02 as an orphaned son of Isaac George, deceased. He was bound out to Mr. Thomas Drew.

Unfortunately I’ve found no other records for Thomas George.

Isaac married Hester Fawdon, daughter of Major George Fawdon and ?, about 1654 in Isle of Wight Co, VA. Hester was born about 1635 in Isle of Wight Co, VA. She died in 1685/1696 in Isle of Wight Co, VA or Middlesex Co, VA.

They had the following children.

                4    M       iii.    Thomas George was born after 1681 in Isle of Wight Co, VA. He died after 1702 in Surry Co, VA.

Second Generation

2.     Robert George (Isaac) was born on 20 Feb 1665/1666 in Isle of Wight Co, VA. He died on 21 Jan 1733/1734 in Middlesex Co, VA. He was buried on 23 Jan 1733/1734 in Middlesex Co, VA.

Robert married Sarah on 6 Jul 1687 in Middlesex Co, VA. Sarah died on 14 Apr 1734 in Middlesex Co, VA.

They had the following children.

                5    F           i.    Catherine George was born in Dec 1689 in Middlesex Co, VA. She was christened on 11 Dec 1689 in Christ Church, Middlesex Co, VA. She died after 1733 in Middlesex Co, VA.

Catherine married Hugh McTyre on 5 Jan 1708 in Middlesex Co, VA. Hugh was born about 1687 in VA. He died on 12 Apr 1731 in Middlesex Co, VA.

                6    F          ii.    Sarah George was born on 20 Feb 1692/1693 in Middlesex Co, VA. She was christened on 12 Mar 1692/1693 in Christ Church, Middlesex Co, VA. She died after 1733 in Middlesex Co, VA.

Sarah married Churchill Blakey, son of Thomas Blakey and Margaret Jones, on 30 Nov 1710 in Middlesex Co, VA. Churchill was born on 30 Nov 1690 in Middlesex Co, VA. He died on 8 May 1738 in Middlesex Co, VA.

                7    M       iii.    Robert George was born about 1697 in Middlesex Co, VA. He died in 1766 in Caroline Co, VA.

Robert married Anne Allen, daughter of Richard Allen and Elizabeth, on 28 Jul 1718 in Middlesex Co, VA. Anne was born in Mar 1701/1702 in Middlesex Co, VA. She was christened on 15 Mar 1701/1702 in Christ Church, Middlesex Co, VA. She died after 10 Jan 1771 in Caroline Co, VA.

                8    F         iv.    Elizabeth George was born about 1698 in Middlesex Co, VA. She died after 1764 in Halifax Co, NC.

Elizabeth married Edmund Mickleborough, son of Edmund Mickleborough and Jane, on 19 Nov 1719 in Middlesex Co, VA. Edmund was born on 22 Dec 1696 in Middlesex Co, VA. He died on 15 Apr 1721 in Middlesex Co, VA. He was buried on 17 Apr 1721 in Middlesex Co, VA.

Elizabeth also married Robert Williamson, son of Robert Williamson and Katherine Lewis, on 13 Feb 1726/1727 in Middlesex Co, VA. Robert was born on 19 Jan 1695/1696 in Middlesex Co, VA. He was christened on 23 Feb 1695/1696 in Christ Church, Middlesex Co, VA. He died in Jun 1764 in Halifax Co, NC.

                9    F          v.    Jane George was born in Apr 1702 in Middlesex Co, VA. She was christened on 19 Apr 1702 in Christ Church, Middlesex Co, VA. She died on 18 Jan 1729/1730 in Middlesex Co, VA.

Jane married Paul Thilman, son of Paul Thilman and Sarah, on 17 Apr 1723 in Middlesex Co, VA. Paul was born in Feb 1703/1704 in Middlesex Co, VA. He was christened on 23 Feb 1703/1704 in Christ Church, Middlesex Co, VA. He died on 4 Feb 1730/1731 in Middlesex Co, VA.

              10    M       vi.    John George was born on 18 Aug 1704 in Middlesex Co, VA. He was christened on 3 Sep 1704 in Christ Church, Middlesex Co, VA. He died in Apr 1784 in Caroline Co, VA.

John married Mary Jordan about 1724 in Essex Co, VA. Mary was born about 1704 in King William Co, VA. She died in 1750/1755 in Caroline Co, VA.

John also married Ursula Dudley, daughter of John Dudley and Ursula Beverly, before 1755 in Caroline Co, VA. The marriage ended in divorce. Ursula was born on 20 Sep 1720 in VA. She died in 1799 in Caroline Co, VA.

              11    F        vii.    Susannah George was born about 1707 in Middlesex Co, VA. She died after 1750 in Caroline Co, VA.

Susannah married John Thompson on 9 Jan 1727/1728 in Middlesex Co, VA. John was born about 1707. He died in 1750 in Caroline Co, VA.

              12    M     viii.    Richard George was born in May 1709 in Middlesex Co, VA. He was christened on 29 May 1709 in Christ Church, Middlesex Co, VA. He died in May 1773 in Caroline Co, VA.

Richard married Elizabeth Ann Mayo, daughter of Valentine Mayo and Ann Mickleborough, on 20 Apr 1734 in Middlesex Co, VA. Elizabeth died after 1782 in Caroline Co, VA.

3.     John George (Isaac) was born in 1674/1678 in Isle of Wight Co, VA. He died in 1711 in Isle of Wight Co, VA.

John married ? before 1693 in Isle of Wight Co, VA. ? died before 1696 in Isle of Wight Co, VA.

They had the following children.

              13    M         i.    William George was born in 1689/1693 in Isle of Wight Co, VA. He died in 1716 in Surry Co, VA.

William married Sarah Thorpp, daughter of Thomas Thorpp and Martha, before 4 Aug 1711 in Isle of Wight Co, VA. Sarah died before 1759 in Edgecombe Co, NC.

John also married Frances Servant, daughter of Bertrond Servant, on 16 Jun 1696 in Elizabeth City Co, VA.

They had the following children.
