I (Marty Grant) am a 4th Great Grandson of Wilson and Esther Gilbert, assuming that one unproven connection is correct.
Wilson Gilbert was born ca 1765/1770 (per his age on the 1830 census combined with his 1810 census entry), and either in NC (assumption) or in SC. The South Carolina possibility is based on the 1880 census entry for Joshua Gilbert, which shows that his father was born in SC, whereas he himself (Joshua) was born in NC as was his mother. The only problem with this, is that I haven't yet proven that Joshua was Wilson's son. Four of his other children (Thomas, Daniel, Benjamin and Eliza) all listed their father's birthplace as North Carolina on their 1880 census entries. Since they are proven (more or less) children of Wilson, I trust their entries more than Joshua's regarding Wilson's birth place.
I have no idea who Wilson Gilbert's parents were, but there were several Gilberts found in early Chatham Co, NC records, where he lived. Some additional research is needed to properly sort them out. There was an apparent widow near him on the 1800 and 1810 census named "Sabra Gilbert". It is entirely possible that she was his mother.
For years, I was unsure if the Wilson Gilbert found in early Chatham County, NC records was the same person as the Wilson Gilbert who appeared in Burke County (now Yancey) later on. I was sure they were one and the same, but had no direct proof. However, I finally found some hard evidence. Wilson's probable son Benjamin Gilbert was listed on the 1870 census in Mitchell County, NC (as was Thomas Gilbert, also Wilson's son). The census taker for Grassy Creek township listed the actual county of birth for each resident, and for Benjamin, he listed his birth place as "Chatham" County, North Carolina. This ties it all together very well. Unfortunately, Thomas was in Toe River Township, and that census taker only listed the state of birth. This shows that the Burke / Yancey / Mitchell County Gilberts came from Chatham County originally, just as I had theorized.
Wilson Gilbert was not listed on the 1790 census, at least not in North Carolina (or South Carolina). He would have been between 20 and 30 years old then, so could still be home with his parents, if unmarried. There were no Gilbert families listed on the 1790 census in Chatham County, NC.
Wilson Gilbert married Esther Smith ca 1790/1800 in Chatham Co, NC (no marriage record found). Esther was born ca 1765/70 in NC. She is either a daughter of Thomas Smith and Esther (---), or she is their granddaughter a daughter of Daniel Smith and Pleasant Chancey. (Daniel's daughter Esther was born 1776, so that may be too young to be the same Esther.)
Wilson Gilbert was listed on the 1800 census in Chatham Co, NC. There were two other Gilbert's on the same page, a Joshua Gilbert (c1774/84) (possible brother?) and an apparent widow Sebtey Gilbert (bef 1755), perhaps Wilson's mother? She was listed as "Sabra" on the next census. The census was not alphabetical, so they all seem to live near each other. Since none of these were there back in 1790, they must have moved to Chatham from somewhere else in the 1790's.

Wilson Gilbert was listed on the 1810 census in Chatham County, near Sabra Gilbert, possibly his mother (same person as "Sebtey Gilbert" in 1800?). There were five Gilbert households in 1810 Chatham Co, NC, including Wilson and Sabra, and also James, Joshua and John, probably all of the same family.

Wilson Gilbert was listed on an 1815 Tax List in Chatham County, as "Wilson Gilbert", in Alston's District, charged with 1 white poll (himself), and 150 acres on Bear Creek. Bear Creek is in the south western portion of Chatham County, south and west of Pittsboro.
On 19 Apr 1817, Wilson Gilbert signed as the bondsman for the marriage of Henry Jeffers and Abigail Smith in Chatham Co, NC. Perhaps one of them was a relative of his.
** I did not find Wilson Gilbert on the 1820 census. He was not on the index in Chatham County, nor were any other Gilberts listed there that year. Either the entire family was missed (several households), or the index is faulty, or they all moved somewhere else by this time. I did find a "Wilson Gilbert" on the 1820 census in Dickson County, Tennessee (with several other Gilberts). His entry showed him to be someone far younger than our Wilson Gilbert. So, I have no idea where our Wilson Gilbert was living in 1820.
At some point prior to 1830, Wilson Gilbert found his way to the Three Mile Creek area of Burke Co, NC. This area later became Yancey County in 1833, and Mitchell County in 1861.
Wilson Gilbert was listed on the 1830 census in Burke County, either on or near Three Mile Creek, judging by his neighbors. He was within just a few houses of Andrew Davis, Henry English, and my ancestor Thomas Grant, and several members of the Davis and Carpenter family known to live on Three Mile Creek. Though Thomas Grant would very shortly move far away from that area, his Great Grandson (Marvin R. Grant) would wind up marrying Wilson Gilbert's Great Granddaughter (Lilly B. Gilbert) nearly 100 years later. They probably had no idea their ancestors had been neighbors nearly a century earlier.

Yancey County was formed in 1833 from part of Burke County including the section where the Gilberts resided.
Wilson Gilbert was listed as a voter for the 1835 Congressional Elections from Yancey County. He was listed in Oakes Precinct, as was his probable sons Thomas Gilbert, Joshua Gilbert and Daniel Gilbert. Wilson, Thomas and Joshua were all listed together, indicating they voted one after the other, with Daniel listed further down the list (not that far down the list though), probably showing he came in a little later. This seems to tie them all together as family members, but of course is not conclusive proof, however, I'm convinced they were all closely related.
Wilson Gilbert seems to have died between 1835 and 1840, as he was not listed on the 1840 census, and his probable son Thomas Gilbert seems to have Esther (probably widowed) residing with him then (or someone her age).
Esther, widow of Wilson Gilbert, seems to be with her son Thomas in 1840, as does several of her other unmarried children. Thomas may not have been married yet in 1840, but he was listed as head of household (see his entry below).
Esther Gilbert was listed on the 1850 Census in the Mortality Schedule. It listed her as "Esther Gilbert", age 70 (born ca 1779/80, which doesn't agree with earlier records), a widow, and that she died in January (1850). Unfortunately, the 1850 Mortality Schedule did not give any indication of what family the deceased had been living with (or "who" reported the information to the census taker). Presumably, she was residing with one of her children, who told the census taker of her death.
Wilson and Esther are probably buried somewhere in the Three Mile Creek vicinity. This entire area became Mitchell County in 1861, and remained so until 1911 when Avery County was formed.
The census records show that Wilson and Esther Gilbert had several children. Unfortunately, I have found no conclusive proof for who any of them were, but I have a list below that I am confident in. It is based entirely on circumstantial evidence, but in most cases I feel strongly that they belong here.
Unknown Son (1790/1800). Wilson Gilbert had an apparent son this age with him for the 1800 census. He seems to have been gone by 1810, so probably married or dead by then.
Unknown Son (1794/1800). Wilson Gilbert had an apparent son this age with him for the 1800 census. He was still home in 1810 (age 10-15, born ca 1794/1800). I don't know if he was still home in 1820 or not. More research is needed before I can say anything else.
Unknown Daughter (1790/1800). Wilson Gilbert had an apparent daughter this age with him for the 1830 census, but not back in 1800. In 1810 he did have a female age 16-25 (born ca 1784/94) which could be her. (I don't have 1820 listings yet). More research is needed before I can say anything else about who she might be.
Unknown Daughter (1800/10). Wilson Gilbert had an apparent daughter this age with him for the 1810 census (age "under 10", born ca 1800/10). I don't have the 1820 census entry for the family. She was apparently still home in 1830 census (age 20-29, born ca 1800/10).
Unknown Daughter (1800/10). Wilson Gilbert had an apparent daughter this age with him for the 1810 census (age "under 10", born ca 1800/10). I don't have the 1820 census entry. She was not home in 1830, so probably married or dead by then.
Unknown Son (1800/10). Wilson Gilbert had an apparent son this age with him for the 1810 census (age "under 10", born ca 1800/10). I don't have the 1820 census entry. He was not home in 1830, so probably married or dead by then.
Unknown Son (1800/10). Wilson Gilbert had an apparent son this age with him for the 1810 census (age "under 10", born ca 1800/10). I don't have the 1820 census entry. He was not home in 1830, so probably married or dead by then.
Unknown Son (1800/10). Wilson Gilbert had an apparent son this age with him for the 1810 census (age "under 10", born ca 1800/10). I don't have the 1820 census entry. He was not home in 1830, so probably married or dead by then.

Thomas Gilbert was born ca 1806/08 in NC, presumably in Chatham County. I have no direct proof that Thomas is a son of Wilson Gilbert, but it seems likely.
Wilson had an apparent son this age with him in the 1810 and 1830 census, and Thomas lived in the exact same region as Wilson (Three Mile Creek), and after Wilson's death, ca 1835/40, Thomas seemed to have his widowed mother and siblings residing with him for the 1840 census. Also Thomas was listed on the 1835 voter list just two names from Wilson Gilbert (meaning they voted more or less at the same time), possibly indicating they went to the polling place together.
Thomas Gilbert married Rebecca --- ca 1840/1842 in Yancey Co, NC. See his own page for additional information on his family.
Joshua Gilbert was born ca 1809/10 in NC, presumably in Chatham County. I have no direct proof that Joshua is a son of Wilson Gilbert, but it seems likely. He was possibly named after the Joshua Gilbert of Chatham County, who might be Wilson's brother. Joshua Gilbert (c1810) is my ancestor.
Wilson had an apparent son this age with him in the 1810 and 1830 census, and Joshua lived in the exact same region as Wilson (Three Mile Creek). Joshua was listed on the 1835 voter list as the next name after Wilson Gilbert (meaning they voted more or less at the same time), possibly indicating they went to the polling place together.
Joshua married someone ca 1835, and apparently developed a wanderlust, as he moved around a lot for the next 20 years before settling (permanently) in Union Co, GA. He was in Rutherford Co, NC in 1840, and still there as of 1844. He was somewhere in GA by 1847, and his first wife died there presumably between 1848 and 1854.
Joshua found his way to Union Co, GA before 1854, when he married Mary Stewart Chandler (widow of James Chandler) and remained the rest of his life in Union Co, GA near the Cherokee Co, NC border.
See his own page for additional information.
Daniel Gilbert was born ca 1810/11, presumably in Chatham Co, NC. He is not a proven child of Wilson Gilbert, but he did appear on the 1835 voter list in Yancey Co, NC, in the same voting precinct as Wilson Gilbert and his supposed siblings. Wilson had an otherwise unknown son born ca 1810/15, with him for the 1830 census, and I've made the assumption that it was Daniel Gilbert. Daniel also named a son "Wilson" and he was associated with Joshua Gilbert, another probable son of Wilson.
Daniel Gilbert was listed on the 1835 voter list in Yancey County. It was around this same time that he married Charity ---, presumably in Yancey County.
Daniel was on the 1840 census in Burke Co., NC in the section that later became McDowell County.
I haven't been able to find Daniel on the 1850 census. Birth place of their children indicate they should have been in GA somewhere for that census.
By 1860 they were in Gilmer Co., GA, and by 1870 in Pope Co., IL.
Mary "Polly" Gilbert was born ca 1812/13 in NC, presumably in Chatham County. I've seen no direct proof that she was a child of Wilson Gilbert, but she was a Gilbert (maiden name given on the marriage record of one of her children, E. S. Wiseman in 1869), and he was the only one around who could be her father. Also, she named one of her sons "Wilson G. Wiseman", so that is a strong indication that she was a child of Wilson Gilbert.
Mary was not listed at home with Wilson Gilbert in 1830 census, unless she was listed in the age 20-29 category (born ca 1800/10), which might be her, if her age is off slightly.
She married Josiah Wiseman ca 1830/31 in Burke, now Yancey, Co, NC. I didn't see Josiah Wiseman listed on the 1830 census, so they must have married late that year, or early the following year (1831). There were only two Wiseman's listed in Burke in 1830 (Bedford and Alexander), both on the following page from Wilson Gilbert, and in the same general area. Alexander had no one Josiah's age with him, but Bedford did, however, the male age 20-29 in Bedford's household was probably Bedford himself, as there was no one any older listed there.
So, I don't know who Josiah Wiseman's parents were. The only actual candidate appears to be William Wiseman (died 1830) who was married to Lydia Bedford. He had a son Josiah's age. Josiah did name one of his daughters "Lydia" perhaps in honor of his mother.
Josiah Wiseman was listed on the 1840 census in Yancey County on the same page with his brother-in-law Thomas Gilbert, and just two houses from Alexander Wiseman, a possible brother.

I did not find Josiah nor Mary on the 1860 census in Yancey County. By 1870, Josiah had apparently married Mary's sister Eliza Gilbert so Mary must have died sometime between 1850 and 1870.
Most of the Wiseman children were in Yancey County in 1860 and still there in 1870 but in McDowell County by 1880.
Benjamin Gilbert was born ca 1819/20 in NC, in Chatham Co, NC (as proven by 1870 census).
Benjamin Gilbert is not a proven child of Wilson Gilbert, but it seems very likely that he is a child of his. Benjamin was living in the same area as Wilson, and Wilson did have a son his age per the 1830 census, and it appears that Benjamin was possibly residing with his brother Thomas for the 1840 census, and Benjamin was born in Chatham County where Wilson had lived at that time.
Benjamin married Lurany --- ca 1840/1850 in Yancey Co, NC. Her maiden name might be Vance because Barbary Vance, age 80, is residing with them for the 1850 census. She is possibly Lurany's mother. Other researchers list Matthew Vance's wife as Barbara McVeigh, and presumably this is who this is. Lurany was born ca 1819/20 in Greenville Dist, SC (as proven by the 1870 census). This further supports her being a Vance, as that family had been in Greenville before coming to the Yancey County area.
In 1850, Benjamin Gilbert, and wife Lurany, and presumed mother-in-law Barbara Vance were listed in Yancey Co, NC. They were listed next door to John Smith and Martin D. Wiseman.

In 1861, Mitchell County was formed from several counties, including the portion of Yancey where the Gilberts resided.
Benjamin and wife were listed on the 1870 census in Mitchell County, in Grassy Creek Township. This census taker thoughtfully included the county of birth of each person (when only the state was required), and Benjamin was listed as born in Chatham County, North Carolina (thus supporting my theory that he is Wilson’s son), and his wife was listed as being born in Greenville, SC, thus supporting my theory that she was a Vance (they came from there).

I have no data on them after this.
It does not appear that Ben and Lurany had any children together, or none to survive long enough to be listed on a census record.
Eliza Gilbert was born ca 1825/26, presumably in Burke (later Yancey) Co, NC. She was apparently home with her parents for the 1830 census, and residing with her brother Thomas for the 1840 census.
In 1850, Eliza Gilbert was listed by herself, just a few houses from her sister Mary Wiseman. I'm not sure why she was by herself, but she was listed next door to Leonard M. Gurley and John Maylor.

** Eliza was listed on the 1860 census in neighboring McDowell Co, NC. She had a daughter by this time (apparently out of wedlock.)
By 1870 she was married to her widowed brother-in-law Josiah Wiseman and they were living in McDowell County that year. He died before 1880 for she was listed as a widow on the 1880 census. ** I don't have these census entries typed up yet.
Eliza Gilbert Wiseman died sometime after 1880. I have not attempted to find her in 1900 yet.
